After doing as much research as possible and having all the necessary tools to root my phone and flash the ROM I want.....I was wondering if it's encouraged to have a micro SD card in the phone before doing so. Is it safer to have one?
Thanks

It shouldn't really be safer but I used an SD Card to store all my Roms, gapps, etc, just in case I have to use a cleaner which formats the Internal SD (G2x Scrubber I think)
Appreciate the replies. I think i'm going to go ahead and root my phone and install hellfire without an SD card..
It is possible for me to go ahead and buy one after the fact and use it for future purposes in case I decide to flash a different rom?
Also, for rooting the G2X I have been given 2 ways of doing so. One is to use superoneclick. The other, is to simply manually flash CWM on my PC and from there install a custom rom that is already rooted. The second method was given to me because superoneclick does not work for the G2x if it's on 2.3.4 which is the current update that I am on.

Can you use the 8GB Sd Card that came with the Inspire as a Gold Card? I've already used 4gb of it for music and other stuff. Sorry if this is a noob question, I'm used to one-click roots (Captivate) . Thanks
I did. But it was blank. Copy everything off, then do the GC, then once completely done, reformat and put it all back.
Simple answer. Yes, that's about all its good for. Get something bigger for storage and make that your gold card.
Inspire (rooted)
Leedroid v2.0.0
TELUS kernel
So to connect the sd card I could just connect my phone to the PC, use mass storage and then format the sd card? Thanks for the replies guys
Yes. +10
Inspire (rooted)
Leedroid v2.0.0
TELUS kernel
I'm still new to all this rooting, goldcard, etc. Once the Goldcard is created, and the phone is rooted, you don't actually have to continue to use the Goldcard, do you? Example, make the GC on the 8Gb that came with the Inspire, and then once the root is complete, go back and permanently use my own 16Gb stick.

That is correct, I have my 32GB Sandisk in there now. Works great.
I have a question along these lines too. By switching SD cards after the rooting process,(going from a smaller to bigger SD card) would you lose root? Or is it just for the initial root process?

It's only.needed for the process of gaining root.
Thanks for the reply. Was really hoping to not have to sit there for another hour and a half just to root it again.

About to get the Inspire and get right on with rooting, although I've been reading and not understanding how this goldcard works completely. I guess my concern is the errors some users are getting? Where they need to use another HTC device to get the right cid code or something? I dont have another HTC device, can I actually lock my device out? Please advise as I'll risk rooting only so far. Thanks, maybe I'm just blowing this out of proportion.
if you follow the instructions in the hack kit, you shouldn't have any issues. this was my first experience with creating a gold card and it went smoothly. just be patient and persistent.
I am also about to buy the Inspire. So can we use the bundled SD card for the gold card? or do we have to have a spare card for emergency restore and stuff?
You can use the card it comes with.

Good question as I was going to use a spare one. I might as well use the one it came with. I'm about to begin. whats the worst that can happen?

I will probably keep a spare one around. Would you recommend that?

use whatever works. just keep in mind you can't use the goldcard.img file you get from the email on any card other than the one you got the serial number from. I bought a 16 GB card to use with my phone anyway, so I used the 8 GB it came with and put it in a drawer in case I ever need it again.

Oh okay. I have 1 8GB with me right now and I will get the one with Inspire. So is 8GB enough for the gold card so that I will keep it for .img file?
I will keep the spare in my phone.
Sorry I am a total noob in this. I come from iPod family
It will work with a 2 GB card minimum from what I read.
what does that mean? i have a 8 gig myself so just process for a goldcard.img? then save then use if needed?

The goldcard was only necessary to get past the very first stage of rooting. A goldcard is used to force the device into accepting a ROM that was not designed for the particular device (in the case of Inspire, you must install a DesireHD ROM to be able to continue with the rooting process).
Once you're rooted, the rooting process sets SuperCID in hardware so a gold card is no longer needed, even if you want to install a ROM not designated for your device.
In short, use your 16GB card just as you normally would (maybe save the 4G in case you ever need to root a different device).
Thank you for your fast reply.,
i understand the idea behind the goldcard beter now,.
Hi, I have been messing with rooting and installing custom roms on my Droid Charge. I'm totally new to it and have been getting the hang of it, lots of wipes, reinstallations, etc. Unfortunately, it looks like my 32gb microSD card has been a casualty of all this. Since I had managed to install a custom rom on my Charge, my card cannot be read by any device, I've tried it in two computers and two Android phones. All are unable to format the card either, showing it in RAW format.
I believe when I was looking at some threads here, there was an issue with some of the roms maybe damaging the sd card, maybe forcing it to read-only mode? Is there a way I can definitively find out if my card is toast or I can still save it?
Thanks!
I don't have a solution but a question. Was the last rom you flashed a GB rom?
Charged up post!
No, all my roms and kernels have been 2.2 Froyo based.
Flash the SD card fix, not sure how since the SD card isn't working but I would attempt to flash a stock ee4 through Odin & actually use the SD card fix this time....
Also, you might want to consider using Titanium Backup to get all your apps saved to your SD card so you don't lose them from the wipe.

He said that he can't even format it in a separate reader, so changing out the software on his phone isn't going to fix anything.
To the OP: Honestly, it sounds like your card might be bad; it happens. I doubt that any software/ROM could have caused this since software can't physically damage hardware. One suggestion I can make is to try cleaning the contacts on the card; I recommend q-tips and isopropyl alcohol for that. If it still doesn't work and can't be formatted in your computers reader, you simply have a bad card. At that point, try calling VZW and hope they will replace it. They may insist on replacing your whole phone as well; I don't know. Or, you can use this as an excuse to get a faster (Class 4+) card.
Basically I don't have and won't have a SD card in the nearest future and do want to root and potentially switch to custom ROM. Do I absolutely must have a SD card for that or will internal "hard drive" (yes, I know it's not HDD) of Transformer will suffice? As far as I understand there's no data wiping involved in root or reflash process.
so far i don't think cwm can see the internal memory.
so you need a sd card to flash
or i may be wrong.
Thanks for the reply. Will just be patient until I get a microSD card then.
Just realized that I posted on a different account Just switched to my regular nickname.
I might be wrong but the NVFLash method does not need a micro sd card.
It's flashing from CWM that need it.
If I understand correctly nvflash doesn't support Prime One Seven (dumb keyboard not only lags but won't type numbers).

Here's NVFlash 1.7. Don't ask me if it work or not I don't use NVFlash method since I've root.

So, i was trying to pull my micro SD card out on the subway, and it flung away and into oblivion. Could not find it. It was an 8GB card that had nothing really important on it, accept for my clockwork mod and all my root-stuff/nandroid backups.
I'm currently running Prime 1.7, but if I buy a new card, will I have to re-root my device? I dont want to loose my setup..
No, you do not have to root your Transformer again. Just buy a new SD-card, and use it. That's all.
Do I need to move any files onto the card? like CWM and such? Does it need any type of formatting?

You can format it if you want to(it's optional but I always format a new sd card) but no need to move anything to it.
Good idea to run a nandroid backup since you lost all that with the old card.
I always keep backups of my Nandroids on my PC. You might consider that for the future. If it had been your phone or tablet that flew away you could just flash back on a replacement.
