Can you use the 8GB Sd Card that came with the Inspire as a Gold Card? I've already used 4gb of it for music and other stuff. Sorry if this is a noob question, I'm used to one-click roots (Captivate) . Thanks
I did. But it was blank. Copy everything off, then do the GC, then once completely done, reformat and put it all back.
Simple answer. Yes, that's about all its good for. Get something bigger for storage and make that your gold card.
Inspire (rooted)
Leedroid v2.0.0

So to connect the sd card I could just connect my phone to the PC, use mass storage and then format the sd card? Thanks for the replies guys
Yes. +10

I'm still new to all this rooting, goldcard, etc. Once the Goldcard is created, and the phone is rooted, you don't actually have to continue to use the Goldcard, do you? Example, make the GC on the 8Gb that came with the Inspire, and then once the root is complete, go back and permanently use my own 16Gb stick.

That is correct, I have my 32GB Sandisk in there now. Works great.
I have a question along these lines too. By switching SD cards after the rooting process,(going from a smaller to bigger SD card) would you lose root? Or is it just for the initial root process?

It's only.needed for the process of gaining root.
Thanks for the reply. Was really hoping to not have to sit there for another hour and a half just to root it again.

About to get the Inspire and get right on with rooting, although I've been reading and not understanding how this goldcard works completely. I guess my concern is the errors some users are getting? Where they need to use another HTC device to get the right cid code or something? I dont have another HTC device, can I actually lock my device out? Please advise as I'll risk rooting only so far. Thanks, maybe I'm just blowing this out of proportion.
if you follow the instructions in the hack kit, you shouldn't have any issues. this was my first experience with creating a gold card and it went smoothly. just be patient and persistent.
I am also about to buy the Inspire. So can we use the bundled SD card for the gold card? or do we have to have a spare card for emergency restore and stuff?
You can use the card it comes with.

Good question as I was going to use a spare one. I might as well use the one it came with. I'm about to begin. whats the worst that can happen?

I will probably keep a spare one around. Would you recommend that?

use whatever works. just keep in mind you can't use the goldcard.img file you get from the email on any card other than the one you got the serial number from. I bought a 16 GB card to use with my phone anyway, so I used the 8 GB it came with and put it in a drawer in case I ever need it again.

Oh okay. I have 1 8GB with me right now and I will get the one with Inspire. So is 8GB enough for the gold card so that I will keep it for .img file?
I will keep the spare in my phone.
Sorry I am a total noob in this. I come from iPod family
It will work with a 2 GB card minimum from what I read.
what does that mean? i have a 8 gig myself so just process for a goldcard.img? then save then use if needed?

The goldcard was only necessary to get past the very first stage of rooting. A goldcard is used to force the device into accepting a ROM that was not designed for the particular device (in the case of Inspire, you must install a DesireHD ROM to be able to continue with the rooting process).
Once you're rooted, the rooting process sets SuperCID in hardware so a gold card is no longer needed, even if you want to install a ROM not designated for your device.
In short, use your 16GB card just as you normally would (maybe save the 4G in case you ever need to root a different device).
Thank you for your fast reply.,
i understand the idea behind the goldcard beter now,.
Hello everybody, just received my Inspire earlier today and coming from a Vibrant I'm slightly lost in all this gold card set-up. I made my largest sd-card into a gold card without realizing and would like to make my small 2gb sd-card into one. How would you get rid of the gold card and make it into a regular sd-card?
Thanks in advance.

Oh ok thanks. Had originally wanted to just have a gold card for everything that I would need out for and just have my regular sd-card for everything else.

you won't hurt your phone just keeping it, you will not notice any difference. you can always make your 2g card into another goldcard the same way you made your first one.
Ok thanks for all the replies.

ok, i rooted with buddy one click, got eng s-off, flashed to a custom rom and everything is perfect. No issues at all with the phone or card as it stands. My only question is all that was done using a 4 gig SD card that i used to make a goldcard. Can i now just simply pop in a 16 gig card and reboot the phone or do i need to make it a gold card first? and is there anything i need from the old card transferred to the new card before i do it?

No, you no longer need the goldcard in the SD slot for the phone to operate. You can remove and save it in case you ever need a goldcard again.
OK, I am going from an 8gb sd card to a 16gb, but before I do I need to know if it will break root or if I just need to make the new one a goldcard as well or what in general. I searched for switching sd cards in the forum but it didn't give results so I'm asking here.

the ONLY reason a goldcard is needed is for downgrading firmware. ROOT is WITHIN the OS and has NOTHING to do with the SDCard. you can freely swap sdcards at will

If you change your SD card nothing will happen except that you will loose your apps and photos in there. Root access has nothing to do with your SD card. Make a copy of the files and folders you want to preserve in your pc and then copy then back in your new SD card....

Ok, so a follow-up to that, and this may be a noob question but... Is there anything on the SD card that I have to have? I usually move ROM backups off the card to a computer, but lots if apps seem to make a folder in my SD card. As a rule, am I better off keeping apps in the phone memory if available? My SD cd card seems to be full of cr*p that i don't think I need but am afraid to delete.

Nahh dont copy anything...just the backup and the titanium backup folder...that will do. With those folders you can restore all your missing apps with data...and have a backup of your rom just in case!! Is good to tidy up from time to time!

Got it, thanks. What about apps, are they better off on the phone or should I move them all (widgets excluded) to the SD card?

Back them up with the titaniun backup and the copy that folder into your new SD Card. Restore the missing apps and that's it. You need no more...

In my experience apps don't do so well from the sd card. Leave them in the phone.

Thank you all. I moved all of my apps back to the phone. I had already culled many that I didn't use when I rooted and flashed a ROM last week. I made new backups and pulled them off the sd card for safe keeping and then erased the SD card. I put music and ringtones back and now I have lots of space and everything still works. Guess all of those other files were just clutter. Thanks again.

I rarely have problems with apps on the SD. Maybe one or two out of 100.
My god I've been at this for hours and decided to finally give in and ask what's wrong here. I've followed the instructions perfectly but I always get stuck at the part that says "SD card is either not mounted or doesn't work." Now I've done just about everything you can do with Android on my captivate so I'm not new to this but on my captivate the SD card in most guides is usually the internal one. So my question: To use Ace Hack Kit do you need an EXTERNAL SD card? If so won't removing it make the phone not work?

You need an SD card. There is no internal card on these phones. Just the emmc chip which houses your partitions. It needs the card for the root process. Also its good to just have one for storage. They are real cheap at best buy for the class 10. The phone will work without one, but for rooting its required. Also for installing custom roms you will need one.
