Study says that 3D in phones is going to be huge in 2013-2018 - LG Optimus 3D

source: https://www.prbuzz.com/business-entrepreneur/99680--new-market-study-3d-mobile-market-2013-2018.html
"With an increasing number of mobile applications and technologies being produced, 3D capture is likely to become as important as 3D viewing in TVs. Mobile phones with 3D cameras and HD video recording capabilities are set to become a rage in the near future."
Well, that'll be good!
I'm looking very hard for a good smartphone to replace my Optimus 3D in this year!
So far no news about any upcoming phones
But according to this study, it should become huge soon....

yeah and the world would end 12/2012

Well, it's a good day for 3D news today: http://www.phonearena.com/news/HP-t...-users-to-move-45-degrees-from-center_id41154
HP is working on an improved 3D screen for smartphones!

I don't believe on those kind of studies anyway, most of them are wishful thinking.
Even if this study proves correct, the "huge" 3D trend won't probably come from LG (or HTC) phones because their small market share don't make them trend setters.
But if the next iPhone or Galaxy has a 3D screen, 3D will immediately become huge.

show that to the people back in 2011-2012

All you need is a Google pushed 3D project and it'll blow up, you don't need Samsung or Apple.

if 3D does make a MIRACULOUS(and i do mean by GODS DIVINE HAND), then LG would have already had an big advantage over its competitors

if you guyzz don't know i would like to tell you that i phone can be used as a 3d by purchasing a special 3d glasses.
Just play a 3d video, put on the glasses and enjoy 3d

LG would have had a big advantage, if it would have put 3D on a phone with Gingerbread at release and ICS half a year later.
If it would have put 3D on a phone with double it's memory and more processor speed.
If it would have put 3D in marketing not only focussing on it's gimmicky 3d screen, but more on the camera.
If it would have re-introduced it in the new flagships that followed the Optimus 3D, most of all the Optimus G.
But now the entire experiment is considered to be a 'failure' because it was part of a phone that was badly supported, released with outdated software, and too little memory. Perhaps the thickness was also a factor, but maybe LG was just not able yet to release a thinner 3D phone.
And even then the O3D sold 1,5 million times.
I wonder how often the Optimus G was sold.... It's definitely not that much more.
LG had the big option in had to differentiate itself from it's competitors, but simply choose not to do so.

Here: http://bgr.com/2013/01/18/lg-optimus-g-sales-295602/
Optimus G sold 1 million units. Now I can imagine that it'll sell another half a million perhaps in the next year at most.
Then it'll have sold as much units as the Optimus 3D.
The Optimus G is not a bigger winner then the Optimus 3D.
Yet everybody claims that the O3D failed and that the Optimus G is LG's greatest success till today....
It all has to do with an anti-3D bias most tech-journalists seem to have...

3D, at least in it's current form is not all that good. Actually it's pretty bad. This HP screen with the 45 degrees viewing angle sounds promising. That technology may revolutionize 3D, if done right.
3D cameras will never be that important until we have good 3D screens.

[Q] EVO 3D

Now that the evo 3D has been revealed are u still geting the the optimus 3D ?
Hands on review http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-EVO-3D-Hands-on_id17611
Depends what phone makes it to the stores sooner, but I'd prefer the EVO judging from the specs.
960x540 resolution on HTC is the advantage imho

EVO 3D for sure
Well I would get the evolution 3d but sadly no gsm...
So I'll be picking me up an official 3d
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Same size, same weight, but higher res screen.
CPU and GPU seems to be a lot slower, first benchmarks on prototype hardware shows that Tegra 2 is 50% faster.
http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/for...60-smartbench-2011-result-have-been-revealed/
honestly judging from the benchmarks i would prefer the LG. Its sad to see htc lag behind with their qualcomm because they make great products. Just the build quality is amazing with htc. Ive also heard that the new qualcomm chips have signed and locked bootloaders :/. The qualcomm msm8660 and 8260 are both dualcore arm cortex a8 and the .2 overclocked compaired to other dualcores just doesnt make up for the lack of performance and power comsumption gain.
You've got to be kidding. The less than stellar benchmark results are based on 1 benchmark from a prototype? Possibly fake? Let's wait and see what the evo 3d will do.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Joke or not, it looks slow.
Smartbench uses several 2D/3D routines to calculate an index, so it is not one benchmark, it is several ones.
May be fake, we'll see soon enough, CPU should show up in several phones soon.
Another advantage of the Evo 3D is the inter-camera distance, lenses seen to be further apart. Should bring little more depth to objects further away.
Evo 3D looks 3 mm shorther and 3 mm slimmer too. Same weight though.
The slightly bigger battery at 1700mah vs 1500mah needs testing to check the battery times. Maybe the screen needs more juice...
GSM is a big deal for me too; too bad, this is a nice Evo refresh. Also, if you're a fan of Google Voice, the Sprint network has an edge in that dept.
Here are my thoughts on the features of the LG Optimus 3D Vs. HTC Evo 3D:
OS: Like the 2x, the Optimus 3D runs Froyo. An update has been mentioned often by LG & should be released soon after the phones have gone retail. The Evo 3D has the latest update.
CPU: Up for grabs right now, but LG's TI OMAP shows alot of promise. Again, we just met the Evo 3D- still both phones are very fast.
RAM: HTC has twice the RAM @ 1 GIG. Yet, LG's 2x & the 3D are top 5 in most benches w/ only 512. Dual channel or not, I've brought this up before, maybe 512 is enough after all?
Build: HTC probably has a better build- shaped like the stellar Evo, its parts are smooth & has some weight when handled. The previews for LG's 3D & its 2x has been relatively positive. Nothing ground breaking, but conservatively simple & elegant.
Camera: Both are dual 5mp on the backside & I think 1.3mp on the front. The difference is that the Evo has a dedicated shutter button & 2x LED flashes.
UI: LG's UI overlay is rather weak compared to the Sense- but that's a two-edged sword being that so little is in fact added to LG's UI, it's not bloated w/ company widgets, apps, or questionable OS modifications. That's cool or cheap of them, hehe. The new Sense UI IMO, looks great.
Display: HTC has a winner here. LG's screen is great, though just not Samsung, HTC, Apple, "great" where their phones have continually put out awesome displays. The Evo 3D screen is slightly thinner & taller because HTC believes this aspect ratio is the proper size. Both phones are within 4.3 inch category.
Battery: The Optimus 3D has a Li-Ion 1500 mAh while the Evo 3D includes a 1730 mAh battery.
3D: The only negative words about 3D for these phones stem from the public- which do not have access to test these two devices. Which does it better? There are those that care & I hope the media makes a statement on this topic.
Extras: Both phones have HDMI ports, can record 3D in 720p & 2D in 1080p.
IMO, both phones are great devices considering they're first to jump in the 3D market. I'm looking forward to the Optimus- hopefully early spring!

Great comparison! You have to remember something though... all the new htc phones have signed and locked bootloaders.. the evo 3d might come with 2.3 from the get go but the optimus 3d (thrill) will probably have 2.3 custom roms ready to go before its US release because devs in UK. And something else to remember.. rooted and custom rom available phones get updates first. Why the users on evo 3d are waiting for htc to send out a sense based 2.4, people on optimus 3d will already have a stock version custom rom.

I don't understand why these companies don't make their phones compatible on as many carriers as possible, would it hurt htc to make another evo3d that has the same 3g bands as the optimus 3d and would instantly work on att/tmo? I love what samsung did with the original galaxy s line, every single carrier had these phones.

It definitely wouldn't hurt them in terms of customer appreciation or choice but I believe it is a but more complex than that, HTC may have signed some exclusivity deals with Sprint because I have yet to see the device announced for other carriers (correct me if I'm wrong).
Yes it's disappointing to see they did that even though it's just business, I will second guess ever buying from them anymore especially after they made me pay for shipping on the warranty RMA or the fact that the phone broke out of nowhere.

good write-up.
I think the only decision for me is to either choose the optimus 3d for the dual channel memory, or the evo 3d for the qhd display.
Signed bootloader is a no-go, even more if the specs are fantastic like this. Imagine a monster like the EVO 3D and HTC stops updating it after 6 months. Horrible.

How will these Roms work w/ the Evo's or the Optimus' 3D software/hardware? It's a new window for developers & it's unclear what the level of progress will be like. Again, these are the only 2 devices set to effectively be released this year & if you're the minority, & furthermore knowing how the general public are split on the concept of 3D, the community may not adopt to these phones as quickly as we'll like.

Thanks, I have to say though, LG's 3D is no slouch. I know, I know that HTC has a more favorable release history w/ their devices- but look up some videos of the Optimus 3D in action. The screen is very tech worthy. The outer body is nicely rugged to stabilize camera usage & I forgot to mention, that while it lacks a shutter button that's present on the Evo, there is a cool "3D" button on the side of the phone which opens up LG's neat 3D carousel menu. It's very functional!

It all comes down to exclusivity & Sprint has the Evo line locked down. If I recall, upon the official unveiling of the Incredible, it was considered by the press to be the Evo's little brother now in Verizon's camp- it’s certainly different, but the general design (hardware & Sense UI) is similar.
Now a few notable downsides for 3D phones:
1. Power Draw: Battery life should be an issue. For instance, the Optimus G2X & the 3D both are powered at 1500 mAh. Yet comparing normal usage through 3D gaming & viewing 3D videos Vs. that of the G2X... you really need to wonder.
2. Photo & Video Enthusiasts: If video recording & capturing stills is more of a passion to you than the addition of a 3D "experience" on a smart phone; in terms of a 1-2 year investment, this may not be the product for you. Camera lens tech on 3D phones will never be on par or outpace regular 2D phones- I just don't see it happening. A 5MP lens on each the Evo & the Optimus Vs. the 8MP lens mounted on the G2X & an 8.1MP listed on the soon to be released Sony Arc & well, the trend is clear...
3. Cost: It's not about being an early adopter anymore. 3D inclusion is now recognized as an "extra," like thumbing in a surround-sound speaker option for a newly purchased car. Expect anywhere from $100-$200 markup compared to a similarly spec'ed phone minus the 3D.
4. Application Support: How will developers respond? Will there be simultaneously launches for application & videos? A price bump for 3D content...? Oh, that I'm quite sure of...
Regarding cost: You can already preorder the O3D at Amazon.de, and the recommended retail price is just 50€ above the 2x/Speed, and the 3D has better build quality, OMAP4, Dual Channel RAM and 4.3" screen.

Right about that; however, I recall when these phones were previewed after MWC, retailers like Expansys listed a difference of over $100... now it's down to $70. If it remains this low upon US retail release, then T-Mo/At&t customers will have something to cheer about this spring!

[Q] 3d effects desame everywhere?

Copy and paste from the "dark side"....since i heard alot people saying te o3d got more depth...
ian928 said:
The same 3d content viewed on both phones is going to have the exact same depth and or popout. All the screen is doing on either phone is showing two pictures, one to each eye. The same 3d source is showing the same two pictures on either phone so the 3d effect has to be the same on both.
I think you may be thinking of the camera and not the screen. The evo's cameras are farther apart and would likely make the point where objects appear to pop off the screen farther away on pics taken with the evo. However, if you view pics taken with the optimus on the evo it will have the same depth as when viewed on the optimus.
And to answer your question, you can only adjust the 3d effect in games not in any pictures or video. The games use computer generated images so the effect can be adjusted. In order to adjust the effect in pics and video you would have to photoshop the images seen by each eye which is not something the phone can do on the fly.

You are referring to the differences in the cameras, not the screens. Optimus photos viewed on the evo will have the same depth as when they are viewed on the optimus. All these phones are doing is showing two 2d pictures on the same screen at the same time while blocking the opposite eye from seeing the other pic. The same 3d source will have the same 3d effect on both phones. The same source has the same two pics when viewed on either screen and therefore cannot have a different 3d effect.
Now if we are talking about different sources then of course the 3d effect can be different.
Oh then what does "3D Depth" stands for when viewing 3D photos on O3D ?

exactly, you can change the depth on photos, videos and games by adjusting the parallax focus point. the same depth is not always present just because it's 2x 2D photos.
I guess on any subject, O3D is way better than Evo 3D. Every benchmark result confirm this. We can Even say O3D is the best phone out there in the market yet.
Plenty of reviews out there say the same thing the 3D effect looks better on the O3D than it does on the Evo 3D, when playing the same source or things taken on the phones.

There is one tech site in the US (PhoneDog) that has both, they choose the Evo because of higher resolution on the screen and a few other things but they admitted that when it comes to 3D effect the LG stands supreme, the Evo isn't nearly as good, not for the effect or for the eyes.
A bit off-topic but IMHO they miss a few things in that "dog fight" because they don't talk about what is "under the hood" of the LG O3D, as stated above it's hardware is probably the most powerful out there.

Only true if one assumes that both handsets are using a parallax barrier of the same quality which works equally effective. This doesn't seem to be the case. (3d images on the O3D are supposed to be more crisp and the viewing angle is supposed to be wider as well)

Thanks this explains it to me. I hope our "media markt" or phone shops get the evo3d soon so we can see them together.
Which makes sense because as the pixels get smaller, the viewing angle gets smaller, its generally harder to make a parallax barrier work as well. Its one reason I am hoping for a 3DS XL as if I am right it would have better viewing angles.
Its tricky business as conversely the more pixels you have the better the effect should be, purely because you have more information to trick your eyes with, but that is 3D in general not factoring in the parallax barrier.
This is all very curious, as I had read the EVO had better quality cameras than the O3D so theoretically should be taking better 3D photos. So it may just be a software issue that the EVO is not setting the image overlap as good as the O3D does, so the situation could change with a quick firmware update.
Still I would like to think the O3D is better as, after all, I bought it rather than waiting for the EVO. I really fancied the higher resolution screen but the priority was on the 3D which it seemed LG were more keen on exploiting whereas the EVO it almost seemed like an after thought - with no mention if it does YouTube 3D or not.
I not seen one video on the Evo that looks good really, they all seem to suffer from HTC's usual crap camera quality and no 1080p recording in 2D that's poor.

that opinion is useless to me...the quality of the evo3d camera is better then the optimus camera. reviewers almost all agree about this.
BUT...the 3d effect of the camera's is better on the optimus3d. some think this is a software issue, but i dont know...
3d quality optimus 3d
i played a week ago on Optimus 3d and i am impressed about 3d quality
the "pre installed movies" are unbelievable as i compaire with what i have seen on an expensive 3D TV. i think i choose optimus 3d but i have the ability to try
my devices 2 weeks. in August my wife and i may choose a new phone
also in august is on the 6th the launch day of Evo 3d, so i order a optimus 3d and an Evo 3d.
Than i can compair both the devices 2 weeks and return one of the two devices.
I LET YOU KNOW WICH IS THE BEST IN MY OPINION!!!
but i followed for 4 months the both the devices on internet and here on XDA and dont missed a review of both devices on youtube.
My opinion for now: HTC is crap because this device have a lot of troubles, design not the most elegant as it have 2 big buttons for the camera and a big hole in it for mini USB.... i think it is a not finished yet device, look at that cheap lookin carousel (its on iPhone Cydia for 0.99$) and the cover bends when you open it te replace memory and that sort of stuff.
But i have paciense because we have almost full root on it... it hink that if some dev,s fix a lot of troubles i buy this one and a red
Body glove cover(then the over sized buttons looks smaller and gives Evo 3d a more expensive look)
Optimus have a sleek elegant design overall 3d Quality looks fine.. the next update can convert 2d games to 3d games as now it can convert 2d images to 3d images.(i like it)

that opinion is useless to me...the quality of the evo3d camera is better then the optimus camera. reviewers almost all agree about this.
BUT...the 3d effect of the camera's is better on the optimus3d. some think this is a software issue, but i dont know...

hmmm, I've viewed a LOT of photos taken by the Evo 3D and I don't agree, the quality is not as good, and in a lot of cases the right camera is out of focus, not good!

I not seen one video on the Evo that looks good really, they all seem to suffer from HTC's usual crap camera quality and no 1080p recording in 2D that's poor.

I didn't know that as GSM Arena says it does 1080p at 24fps, like the O3D until they bumped it up to 30fps with the retail firmware.

Noticed that myself.
Also the Evo 3D can only take 3D pictures at the resolution of 2mp while the LG I believe is 3 or 3.5 can't recall.
The HTC EVO 3D has no feature to protect 3D technology from offsets.
The LG Optimus 3D has Real Time Misalignment Correction to protect 3D technology from dropping/ heating/ humidity which can result in offset throughout the device’s lifetime

Cannot agree more on this. HTC's weakest part is their camera for sure. The EVO 3D 5mp cameras share the same fate as other HTC phone with 5mp camera. Under explosure and poor optics for the camera seems to be haunting EVO 3D. Also under bright light, it has issue with flares as well. This is also common with other 5mp camera from HTC.
Althought can't really say LG O3D's 5mp camrea is the best, but at least it is way better than HTC's one. It does not come with problem like under explosure. weird halos etc.. Also note that O3D takes 3mp 3D photos vs EVO3D 2mp
It is also quite normal for LG to have better 3D viewing quality than HTC. LG already had this tech fro their other appliances. It's more comfortable to view O3D's 3D. Probably the design in the parallax display is the key point here.

optimus 3d or evo 3d?

which one do you people suggest?
my needs are good camera, good 3d experience, durability, battery,Gaming,HD video playback smoothly on phone and on HDTV also!
Does the 512MB ram compared to 1GB make a big difference?
please share your experience with the phone as well

I have a O3D so I'm guessing I'm bias but from what I've heard the 3D on O3D is much better than the 3D on EVO 3D, camera works ok on the O3D, slow camera app but descent pics and video and 3D pics/vid looks good.
Durability no problems there AFAIK.
Battery is low yes but it will most likely get better and there are always solutions to that problem, Gaming works great, HD video playback is no problems and the O3D is the phone with most media format compatibility and HDMI output works great for me.
The RAM difference only matters really when you use all the RAM and with normal use 512 is enough, also when version 2.4/4 of Android comes that's more optimized against dual core systems then the O3Ds Dual RAM and Dual Channel will probably shine much more and performance will get a boost.

the evo 3d got better pop out effects, better resolution wich helps alot in 3d.
also got better camera, wich displays pictures in full screen. the optimus 3d does not do this. Also makes better pictures in dark.
The optimus 3d got better 3d viewing angles. its more relaxed to the eye, but the quality is less then on the evo 3d for sure.
if you do not have problems with viewing angle's and focussing on the screen(you wont get headaches from 3d) then definatly get the evo 3d for better 3d. Other reviews say the o3d got a better 3d screen...thats nonsense. the evo 3d got in both camera 3d and 3d screen, better hardware. Although again, the optimus 3d is really better for the eyes...makes your eyes less tired.
Durability...i think the optimus 3d wins here. the volume buttons on the evo 3d do not feel really confortable, kinda soft...
Battery: evo 3d lasts longer for sure...although dont know if that changes when the o3d will be upgraded to android 2.3 in the future.
Performance:
the optimus 3d is way faster for sure. thats why i traded my evo 3d for the optimus 3d. the evo 3d lags everywhere, you need to wait everywhere(compared to other high end phones).
I hate waiting and wanted smoothness before anything else but 3d.
cant tell anything about HDMI output and have not played 1080p videos yet.
i owned both devices, i know what i talk about

yes the optimus 3d has the popping out effect. but its really better on the evo3d...watched same movies and images..its simply better on the evo 3d. and the resolution of the evo 3d makes the 3d alot more sharper as well.
I give the evo 3d a 7/10 in 3d and the optimus a 6/10.
the optimus 3d however, got alot more 3d content. a 3d menu, reinstalled 3d games, 3d photo gallery... but i hate to see the optimus 3d photo's scaled with black bars on the edge of the screen. how stopid cold LG think.
the next 3d phone should have a even larger resolution, and desame view angle's / eye relaxation specs as the optimus 3d, then its worth a 10/10 i think

are u talking about the images shot by the phone or every 3d image we load onto the phone has black bars beside it?
he's talking about how the pictures taken from the camera has black bars on the top and bottom of the screen if looking in portrait mode and black bars on the left and right side of the screen if looking in landscape mode.
And it wouldn't make much sense if the pictures we took will fill up the screen, since the photos are taken with a 4:3 ratio. Either it'll be stretched out or cut off if it was viewed full screen. If the pictures were taken as a widescreen then it'll be fullscreen so don't worry you probably wont even be bothered by the space since you're still seeing the entire picture.
I've also used a friend's Evo3D and I would definitely say the Optimus 3D's 3D effect is much better. Strangely enough, my opinion is opposite of borgqueenx. I feel like the 3D popping effect is better in the Optimus.
In terms of 3D, i say the optimus wins.
For camera, Evo3D wins without any questions. Unless LG could bring a better update to the camera... the picture qualities kinda sucks.
For durability, its pretty much tied. Both phones are very well made.
Gaming and video playback are both good so that shouldn't affect your decision.
Battery life though... I have no idea what the battery life in the Evo3D is, but for the Optimus 3D, battery life isn't that high. I'm using the stock battery with 3G always turned on or wifi always turned on at home. Minimum usage would last me over 8 hours and longer. However, when gaming or watching videos battery would be dead in about 2 hours.
it simply sucks that LG didnt made it that the camera takes widescreen photo's.
the 3d is much better if viewed in widescreen.
The evo 3d is made in widescreen, and fill up the entire screen.
Therefore i think its stopid why LG chose for this aspect ratio.
But performance really sucks on the evo 3d.

yes, battery life on the optimus 3d sucks. its better on the evo 3d. but not by much. the evo 3d gets about 3 hours of gaming max.
But the optimus 3d gets a android update in october(at least according to the rumours) that will improve battery by a bit.

Nonsense likes. I routinely get 26 to 34 hours of normal use. Gaming does use the battery fast though. You can game solid on a heavy 3d game for 6 -7 hours though from a full charge which is plenty of time. Its a phone not a console.

no, the 6 hours you say, is the nonsense. i have juice ultimate saver(or whatever the name was) and set on only connect and sync apps on the 15 minutes. and i do not have email automaticly synced. brightness auto, and i cant get more then 3 hours of gaming on the device.
lol
You gotta remember that I'm only using stock battery and 3G is always on.
Battery is alright actually.
The captivate will definitely last longer. I believe its because of the AMOLED screen.
At the moment, I'm hoping LG will release an update that does allow us to take widescreen photos.

O3D 3D effect vs EVO 3D's?

Between the EVO 3D and the Optimus 3D/LG Thrill, which has the better 3D quality?
I'm not talking about 3D camera quality, I'm talking purely about how the 3D looks on the screen. I've probably seen an equal amount of answers going for one or the other, so I figured I'd go and ask specifically. Yes, I realize asking here I'll probably get a biased answer, but I'm hoping that somebody here has used an EVO 3D for more than a few seconds and can comment.
Reason I ask is because I'm basically deciding between getting a $600+ Galaxy Note and a ~$200 EVO 3D (one with a bad ESN) or a $300-$400 Optimus 3D and some 7" tablet down the line. If the difference isn't that huge, then I'd probably rather go for the first option partially since Otterbox makes cases for the EVO 3D.
okay. so if you are playing games in 3d or watching movies in 3d then both devices are gonna look equally great. the difference is if you are viewing images or videos you have taken with either device. in this case the lg optimus 3d will look much better... why? because the cameras have a greater distance apart between them then the evo 3d. the closer it is to the distance our eyes are actually apart the better the effect and the easier on the eyes.

So what you're saying is that the 3D effect is basically the same - as in, watching the same 3D movie on each phone, there wouldn't be much of a difference? Again, I'm not talking about 3D camera quality (I'll be getting a Fuji W3 for that, which I know far outclasses either device), I'm mainly concerned about the actual 3D screen quality/effect.
Viewing 3D video & photo on on both are most the same (using other media files). But if u r taking video or photo from both devices and viewing together, O3D will be much better as Camera hardware were installed differently.

Alright, thanks for the info.
So another related question - other than the better 3D camera, better 3D apps (like the specific 3D Youtube app), and better specs, is there anything else the O3D has over the Evo 3D? And speaking of specs, is there anything other than high-end gaming that the O3D's better CPU/RAM will do noticeably better than the Evo 3D? Don't try and sell me that it'll be smoother, because my 800Mhz single-core G2 is pretty smooth.
I'm asking because may be considering another phone instead of the Note (the Nokia N9), and figure I should know before I jump on the Evo 3D based mostly on price.
The O3D has a 2D-3D video/image/game converter. Evo3D does not to my knowledge. It is quite nice being able to take a video file that is not 3D and converting it on the fly. Instead of loading actual 3D video files, just use any ol' vid file. Even downloaded web vids. There is also the ability to take a game like Dead Space and play it in 3D. Or Angry Birds and many others. I am not knocking Evo in any way. LG has been engineering their 3D equipment longer than other manufacturers. They have just been in the game longer than htc (who has only one 3D device) and they don't use it on just mobile applications. IMHO LG wins based on its extra features which will come in handy later even if you don't plan on it until later. Hope I helped. ;-)

Eh, I've seen enough 3D movies to decide that unless it's made in 3D (unlike some 2D movies nowadays that tack on 3D for a cash-in) then I'd rather not bother, and same goes for gaming (had nVidia 3D Vision for a few months and played enough games to see that it's basically hit-or-miss as to whether the 3D effect is worth the inevitable headache I'll get after using 3D for more than 2-3 hours consecutively).
I guess it'll mostly come down to price when I end up buying either a month or so from now - if the O3D isn't much more than $100 more (if even that) then I'll go and buy it, and get the Evo 3D otherwise.

I have 3D Vision on my PC and I know about the hit-or-miss thing with some games in 3D. However this doesn't occur with the O3D, every game (if it runs at all in 3D) will look very good with the 3D feature, you will just have to worry about lower framerates on some graphically intensive games. It also has settings to change the 3D effect to your liking. The 3D technology used in the O3D is completely different from Nvidia 3D Vision, as it doesn't use active shutter glasses that can cause headaches from extended use.
If you aren't so concerned about performance, then why consider the Galaxy Note? The O3D is pretty close to the Samsung Galaxy S II in terms of performance according to most benchmarks.
As for Evo 3D vs Optimus 3D, I have not used the Evo 3D but I know the Optimus has better 3D software (Game Converter, Youtube 3D App, Video/Photo Playback/Editing), combined with more powerful hardware.
If you want a case similar to the Otterbox for the O3D, there's the Ballistic SG. I use it and can attest to it's quality.
Another note, I have seen some (used) Optimus 3D go for less than $300 on eBay...the Thrill 4G is even cheaper (if you don't need the T-Mobile USA band)

Hmm, that definitely makes me rethink it then, if it really is that good - although I can't say I'm that interested in mobile gaming (compared to watching videos in 3D, at least). I'm mostly interested in performance because one thing my G2 can't do well is play high-res videos.
And I'm interested in the Note for a few reasons, such as the stylus, high screen resolution and quality, and the actual size of it (I'd use a 7" tablet as a phone if I could).
The main reason I wouldn't want to use the O3D as my phone is because the main uses out of it - 3D videos and gaming on the side - would tax the battery a bit; that's why I'm also considering the Nokia N9 as my next phone (for the nice unibody construction, long battery life, smooth/sleek/simple OS, etc.), since then I wouldn't have two similarly sized Android devices with the primary differences being that one makes phone calls and the other does 3D.
Do they make any decent extended batteries for the O3D, particularly ones compatible with any cases? A nice one might make me just go for the O3D alone...
And I'm looking at the O3D over the Thrill particularly for the better official updates and dev community, and the fact that I simply can't buy a device without original packaging/accessories (kinda OCD about that) brings up the price to $350+ for me.

Managed to find it (it's 3200mAh apparently), but I can't find the case - unless you mean the battery door it comes with. I'm wondering if there's a case that fits with that extended battery door.
In any case, I'm really tempted to get one with that battery now - thanks for the info.
EDIT: Two more question, actually:
-Does the stock Gingerbread update include notification power toggles (as in, pulling down the notification bar and being able to toggle Wifi, 3G, etc.) or is that something in custom ROMs?
-Are there any major problems with the stock ROM? I don't want to deal with the instability of custom ROMs or losing 3D or Bluetooth or something

The phone has notification power toggles ever since first froyo version and yes they are here in gb as well. No major bugs in gb stock. Some people report wifi and network problems (ghostcalls etc) but given that they have been reportin it since froyo versions I guess it something else going on.I have never had any problems at all neither on froyo nor on gb. Phone is really smooth and works as it is supposed to. Battery drains within normal rates for dualcore phone with a 4.2inch screen and in anyway much more resilient than sgsII (which i used to have for 3 weeks or so...)

[Q] anyone owned both Evo3D and Optimus 3D?

which is better and why?
one gripe I have with my cube is the weak battery life. maybe the evo3D is better in this respect. Also more resolution to display 3D so looks better?
Your genuine experiences please

I bought the evo3d for one of my relative. So I can tell you this:
1. Once it's out of the box you can notice the plasticy feel( it seems cheape ) and after like 5 monthes you start seeing scratches on the metal ( painted black) around the screen
2. The screen colors are crappy (specially the black , it looks gray)
3. You can't control the 3d effect , and that is so annoying and can cause you a headache
4. No 3D converter . And the 3d feature is much less usable than our o3d
5. The ics update didn't add any new feature to the phone
6. The battery life almost the same( maybe slightly better than our o3d)
7. Extremely smooth ( way better android experience) may be because he didn't install apps as mutch as I have. And the multitasking is great due to the 1GB ram
The bottom line : maybe it have ics and 1gb of ram but still as 3dphone the O3D is way better and yes the evo3d has more pixel density but the colours are really... really crappy ( like the colours on the Desire HD)

I had EVO 3D and sold it after two weeks and bought O3D.
Evo 3D made worse 3D images (vertical misallign & pink color of photos).
Almost every model has hardware/software bug: vertical misalligned 3D cameras
Watch the EVO's images on the Phereo.
Here more about it issue:

The Evo 3D's 3D features are crap, but the better processing power somewhat offsets that.
It depends on the version of Evo3D you have. Originally the Evo3D shipped with dual 5MP camera lenses thus creating MUCH better 3D photos (with a bit of Custom Rom tomfoolery!) After the first batch they then switched to only the main lens being 5MP and it was compromised. With greater space between the lens the 3D is deeper but the parallax screen has a smaller sweet spot for 3D. Overall a better phone if you were lucky enough to own a first batch Evo....(especially with 1GB of ram, the memory management is also much better. Smoother UI as a result!

The EVO 3D had indeed 5MP lenses, but you can only make 2MP 3D photo's.
Already the first batch had this terrible low quality 3D pictures. (O3D only makes 3MP 3D pictures, btw)
Thanks for your replies!
Yes... I notice several people expressed vertical alignment issues on the Evo3D that is quite a problem if 3D is a big deal to the user (as it is for me).
Searching on Phereo for photos from O3D vs Evo3D... not an accurate measure, but how is it that there seems to be so many more Evo3D owners than O3D owners?
Am I right to say there's a lot more activity on the Evo3D forums too?
Maybe HTC has a stronger brand name that help them sell more than LG? Any official figures?

Even the EVO 3D has 1gb ram but O3D get a higher score in antutu benchmark

That may be true but benchmark scores are useless in the actual use of the phone.
If both of these phones didn't have 3D, the best phone to choose would the the EVO3D.

Well, considering the O3D equip an A9 dual core cpu, overclock may be possible and safe (i believe).
Anyway, i did buy an EVO 3D for my father an even if it is a great device too, the Optimus 3D give a way better 3D experience (better 3D photos and videos and the fantastic 3D converter). In my opinion HTC didn't developed the 3D function so well as LG did, maybe third party developer will fix this in future.
If neither of these 2 phones had 3D, I am 100% sure I would never have considered owning them at all...
Anyone here agree?

I would have an atrix2 or an HTC vivid if this phone didn't have 3D. It's a shame because I hardly use the 3D anyway.

I haven't owned either but my brother has the thrill which is the same as the optimus and I have an old HTC Inspire and I would easily go with the Evo it has way better development. My single core phone can run JB like a champ I can't imagine how much better the better Evo can run it

hi, i have my O3D since september 2011, with a biggest battery (mugen power 3200 mah) i need to charge it every 2 days in intensive use or every 4 days in normal use. All my friends says it does really good photos compare to their galaxy s2 s3 or iphone, and when i start a 3d video i just can hear a "whaouuu". LG make a good phone but they forget it fast so we just got the ics update but i try jb on my galaxy s2 and i don't find something i absolutely need on my o3d.
With some adjustment (custom rom and kernel), you can have a really good device.
Until now i have never look a better 3d phone.
Mine is overclocked to 1.3ghz.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone here.
I have both phones and I can't fathom why anybody would put up with the Thrill 4G. I'm starting to think my device must have been corrupted or something. I was given it for free at an LG event and used it for all manners of hackery.
Comparing the two is night and day.
The Optimus 3D has a much nicer camera and more onboard storage and that's where the advantages end.
The other negatives aside (LG's UI compared to Sense, MUCH lower resolution, worse battery, hilariously behind OS updates), the device is REALLY laggy. Looking elsewhere online, I see SOME people confirming my experience, but not on XDA. Are you guys just more tolerant or was I unlucky with the device I was given?
Unless I constantly clear the RAM, the device just hangs ALL the time. I've tried constantly to figure out the source of the lag but I can't. I thought it was FaceBook, removed it. Helped for a bit. Thought it was Swiftkey, removed it. Thought it was FolderOrganizer, removed it.
Basically, the phone is unusable to me except from running ONE app a day. And often when it freezes, it'll just reboot, too. I've wiped the firmware and custom flashed and ran stock OSs so many times and the result was always the same.
On the home screen, it's quick, after it caches everything up, but as soon as I jump into a program, it's about 4-5 seconds for any reaction to touches. Is it corrupted RAM? I mean, what would cause this device to be so incredibly laggy half the time but still operate fine, otherwise?
Having now picked one up just a few days ago I can make some 1st observations between the HTC EVO 3D vs the LG Optimus 3D!
EVEN
The stereo cameras are vertically aligned in my EVO 3D just as good as my Optimus 3D! (A pleasant surprise since the number of very badly aligned 3D photos posted by EVO 3D owners on Phereo.com site indicates many have wonky left right camera lenses!)
EVO 3D Positives:
Visibly higher resolution display in 3D photo playback on the EVO vs Optimus. I can definitely make out more detail when viewing 3D material and the vertical parallax barrier lines are much less obvious on the Evo 3D screen.
Native EVO 3D camera support for .mpo and 2ndary option to save 3D photos as .jps.
EVO 3D negatives
Lower captured 3D photo resolution on EVO 3D vs 3D Optimus.
Recorded 3D video on the 3D is unacceptably jerky compared to 3D Optimus???
Jerky playback of both 1080 and 720p downloaded 3D SBS squeezed video samples from YouTube. Whilst playback of the exact same videos on my 3D Optimus is quite fine!
Need to investigate further if a class 10 card will help on the 3D video record and HD 3D playback issues on the EVO 3D.
Will probably post a video that focuses mostly on the 3D differences of the 2 phones once I'm done with my findings.

*update Choppy 3D video playback is not due to the speed of the memory card but an issue of the EVO3D upgrade to 4.0.3 ... bummer
Hi Shredman09,
Any way for me to verify if my particular EVO3D has two 5 megapixel cameras or not. I googled but to no avail...
Many thanks in advance.

The 2 megapixel 16:9 wide screen ratio 3D still photos from the EVO3D although brighter, are also noticeably less detailed than 3 megapixel 4:3 3D photos taken from the 3DO. May need to experiment more with the EVO3D's 3D camera options.
The view on the EVO3D screen for framing shots is brighter so easier to see in sunlight vs the O3D.
The EVO3D has a slightly wider angle lens in 3D camera mode vs the O3D. I had to step back to get a similar framing of the same subject when shooting with the 3DO.
Wider interoccular separation for EVO3D provides greater sense of depth in 3D photos vs the O3D at the same distance from a subject. However it also means the EVO3D is less suited to close up macro shots vs the 3DO.
Early impressions are from the two... the 3DO does better job for 3D camera performance largely because of the significantly greater resolved detail in the final image. I cropped the 3DO image down to 16:9 to match the EVO3D using 3DSteroid to make a better comparisson. The issues in EVO3D's sharpness are not immediately obvious on the phone's 3D screen but once you see the 3D photos displayed on a 3D TV at 1080p, the O3D clearly shows up how blown out details are on the EVO3D.
