Factory reset, how to backup? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear developers,
After the official samsung update to android 4.1.2 my note 10.1 started experiencing difficulties. Example is the (famous?) wallpaper in snote bug. But also crashing programs etc.
I read the solution was to do a factory reset. I'm only worried I will lose much data. Especially progress in games (like asphalt 7), applications friends of mine developed for android, notes, and so on.
How can I prevent data loss for doing a factory reset?
My device is not rooted, and I rather don't.
Best regards,
Bart

I'm not a developer but, AFAIK, the one (and only?) possible solution to backup apps' data without root is Carbon - App Sync and Backup.
I've used it (before rooting) but I didn't have the necessity to restore the backup data yet, so I can't guarantee it works as expected.
I hope it does and I hope someone else can confirm that.

Thanks for giving this great tool! It bypasses the root requirement via a desktop application. It works with mac, a great plus in my opinion. I'm backing up my data as we speak.
Of course I stay open to other suggestions and tips. My data is precious to me .
Greetz,
Bart

You can also backup all your data via ADB, all you need is the Android SDK or search for Ultimate Backup Tool (here at xda). It will also backup apk's, app data and sd card content. Only thing you won't get is apk's which you paid for in market.

[Q] Request for Education: Backups w/o Root?

Hi, I've been browsing and searching around the forum and I think I am more confused than before I started...
I see backup apps that require root (Titanium), and others that say they can do limited backup without root.
Is there an inherent limitation that prevents application data from being backed up if you aren't rooted?
I would like to root my TF700, but I'm on JB and I see it requires downgrade in order to get root (I'm not willing to kill my warranty just yet). I presume downgrading will wipe my tablet of all user data (from internal memory anyway). However I'm not prepared to blow away all my application data. Is some subset of data able to be backed up without root? What is the extent of that? I suppose I can live with losing my Angry Birds progress, but what else would I lose?
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!

Normally, an app can only see its own data, due to Android's security model. This prevents backup apps from seeing the data they should back up, unless they are running as root.

I am not sure if downgrading by itself does anything to your data, however the upgrade to JB modified some database structures and I am not sure what happens if after the downgrade ICS tries to access the already updated databases. It might work, but it may also crash and send you into a boot loop.

There is a way to make a backup to your computer using adb (adb backup) without being rooted. However I have no personal experience with restoring such a backup (adb restore).
As far as I recall, MyBackup (Pro) can actually back up *some* data. I strongly agree with _that though: if you're serious about getting your backup 1) done right, 2) done frequently, and 3) done to any acceptable level of comfort and 4) on any location (even when in a hotel room, on vacation, on the road, whatever), you'll need root access.
Thanks! It makes more sense now.
I did a quick search on adb backup and see there is a fair bit of reading I can do.
Thanks for the pointer!
Ken

[Q] Is it possible to backup settings and data before custom rom?

Good morning to everyone.
I have a stock One S, but now the S-off is possible, I would like to install a custom rom.
My question is: after rooting the phone and before installing the custom rom, is there a way to save\backup all the settings\achievements of the apps and system programs that I used in these 6 months?
Thanks in advance

Yes it is possible. I used an app called Carbon (free in Play Store) to backup my apps and their data. Carbon also has a feature to backup sms and call log but for me it messed up received times and dates of my messages. So use some other app to backup those... That might have been fixed in newer versions though. Be careful with system app backups especially if you plan to go to an AOSP based rom. They might cause problems in your new rom.
Sent from my One S. Hit thanks if I helped
Titanium Backup as well. Not easy for newbies, but choose backup -> backup all systemdata, then uncheck all and check those with the titanium icon. A backup of data/app with all your apps and settings is a standard function of titanium.
You can see an example on the attached pic.
Keep in mind that unlocking bootloader erases all your apps and their data (mass storage stays untouched). So your data will be erased before you can root your phone. Carbon works on stock unrooted phones as well as it's basically the same as doing an adb backup from your pc. Titanium is way better when you get your phone rooted...

I don't know what an AOSP based rom is, but I wanted to try the ViperOnesS because I don't want to lose the Sense.
With my previous Nokia I was used to backup everything[/U ]with a simple click, using the Nokia Pc Suite.
With this Carbon app do you think I'll be able to do the same thing?
Thanks guys.
So I have to download Carbon and save all the system settings?
I have some applications on the phone memory, and others in the internal storage. Is it a problem?

Carbon let's you select the apps that you want to backup. And I believe it also has an option to select everything at once... When you have your custom rom up and running you can then either restore everything from the backup or restore only the apps that you want. Apps being in phone/internal memory shouldn't matter.

Yes. When you flash a new rom it is usually required to do a factory reset (meaning erase your personal apps and data). That's where backup apps come in handy. When in custom rom, install the backup app (Carbon or Titanium) and it will see backups of your apps and let's you restore them.

Yes, but its advised to not restore system data due differences in frameworks, etc.

How does everyone backup their S6's?

I'm just curious what backup solution everyone uses for phone backups.
Helium.
Used TB for many years but Helium is a decent alternative that doesn't compromise warranty.
Helium doesn't obviously do as much as TB but it suffices.
Still waiting for Google to get on par with Apple's approach to backups.
-- from my S6
I used to use twrp all the time , would love to be able to install and flash twrp only to make my backups but I don't want to root just yet till I find out when Samsung pay is coming.
in in Canada on rogers , I don't think its possible to install / run twrp without being rooted and not break knox.
Titanium backup for apps. TWRP for Roms. Laptop for photos and mass music.
I have just been using the Google backup built in to Android. It's not great, but not terrible either. It will restore most of your phone settings and will install all of the apps you previously had installed (or you can pick and choose which to install), but you still have to go through most apps and set them up again.
Anyone tried Samsung's backup built in to the phone?

Settings > Backup and reset
You should see different backup settings. One with Samsung account and another with Google like you find in stock Android.
My 2 Backup-solutions that are working flawlessly since day 1 on every device.
Gcloud Backup - for calllogs and sms
Folder Sync pro - for my photo albums, music, whatsapp and everything else. I sync all that with gdrive or onedrive since I've got there 130gb of storage thanks to s6 ^_^

The definitive app data backup solution for Android Marshmallow

Hello to everyone,
In the past years I always rooted my phone to have a complete backup solution on my phones (Titanium Backup).
When I bought my last phone (Galaxy S6) I decided for the first time to try something different without rooting my phone in order to keep my warranty, automatic OTA updates, and other advantages like Samsung Pay.
The decision wasn't too bad because with PlayGames, manual OneDrive sync of some key backup directories trought FolderSync and especially thanks to Carbon Backup which works in fact more or less like Titanium Backup but without root, I keeped all my app's and games data saved...
But now there is a new problem...
Carbon isn't working with Marshmallow and PlayGames doesn't backup data of a significant number of games. The new backup solution of Android 6.0 seems very nice but if I unterstood right it works only with apps (only few are supported now) and not with games which is the biggest problem for me.
Is it possibile that in 2016 we can't get a complete and working backup solution to restore all data of our apps and games on Android?
Thanks,
As you said, this backup feature of MM only works for a small amount of apps because only a few are updated to/support this feature.
What do you mean by carbon isn't working with MM?
Till now there is no way to make a complete backup of every app without root (correct me if I'm wrong).

[Help] How do I recover permanently deleted files from Android Mobile phone?

Recently, I have permanently deleted files from my Android device after factory reset and I didn't take any backup. Is there have any possibility to recover my important data without having any backup?
Try EaseUS MobiSaver app.
You can definitely check the local backup of your phone if you have take backup regularly then, you have enabled to restore data from mobile. Sometimes, files have an automatic backup on Google account. So, you can check your Google backup. In case, if you didn't get back lost after the factory reset then, you may also try the Android data recovery tool. There is no guarantee for data recovery by using any program. But if it will possible to recover files then, it will show the preview of deleted data during the free trial edition.
To be honest, the chances of it would entirely depend on how long you have performed the factory reset. If it has not been so long, then you can actually get your data back. Pick a recovery tool that supports your device, it will let you preview the data and restore them.
Sorry for the delayed reply. For the ones who have the same problem, usually it's difficult to recover them back. You can ask for help from pro shop. Pro shop like Dr.fone, EaseUS MobiSaver, Coolmuster Lab.Fone for Android, etc. I am not sure they can work well or not. Before that, you need to stop using your phone. Cause data can not be recovered if they are overwritten by new data. And do remember to take backup of your phone usually. It's easy and safe.
I'm in the same seat and I also managed to flash an original rom on a Galaxy S8 on top of that.
Tried trial versions of all the mentioned and some others but they aren't able to detect anything relevant.
At the moment I'm wondering whether to take the loss or hand it in to a professional.
Can they do anything more that the different recovery softwares can't?
(I thought my phone was synced through a cloud app but it turns out it wasn't.)
I have used an app Named "DiskDigger" it worked perfect for me for recovering Pictures.
Have NonRoot-Method and Root Methood

I just found this thread on google, I would like to know if anyone knows a way to recover a deleted application data folder inside the "Android/data" folder in the internal storage, either by adb, usb debugging or with some software since they are important data and I have not gotten any solution .
Thanks in advance.
