It seems that I'm in a catch 22. I'm on a great unlimited data plan, but AT&T insists that if I move to a Atrix or similar device that is recognized by their network, the network will automatically update my data plan to one of the newer ones. As a result, I won't just loose my unlimited data, but I'll have to pay more.
That leaves me only one obvious alternative. Get another non-network phone, that is capable of working on their network (much like my current phone, the Telus Motorola Milestone). That way, I get a newer device with the features I want, but they don't see the phone as an Atrix or whatever... and they don't change my plan.
Would REALLY like the Atrix. The qHD display is something I really want at this stage. Otherwise, a Galaxy S II would be a no-brainer. So I'm hoping with all the great users we have on these forums, someone can recommend a qHD Android 2.2+ device that I can buy unlocked and fits my needs.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm a representative @ a corporate-owned AT&T store and you WILL NOT lose that unlimited data plan. I deal with this on a day-to-day basis. I'm in the Dallas,TX market. We GRANDFATHER the unlimited data plan. It is the NATIONAL policy. We hire the biggest idiots to run the pen. Bro, you keep that data plan unless YOU change it. Don't let them fool you. I PROMISE this is the case. You even have ways of sideloading the wireless tether apk to avoid having to subscribe to the tethering plan. The ATRIX is a great qHD phone. I've seen the GreyBlur and GingerBlur ROM for it. Snappy device with unlimited potential once development starts snowballing.
Bullet,
Thanks. I've spoken to several good people at AT&T, but the "hiccup" is this. When I joined AT&T, I had the $20/month unlimited data plan with the Cingular 8525 phone. But since then, we added unlimited texting to our family plan with 5 phones. At that point, my data plan dropped from $20/month to $10/month. The explination at the time was the unlimited texting was part of my data plan, so my data plan price decreased.
However, now everytime I speak to an AT&T representative and they look at my plan, they tell me I'm on plan OTHER than the standard unlimited smartphone plan. They called it something else last night, I can't remember which. So they say that if I put my sim in an AT&T smartphone, like the Atrix, the network will see I'm using an AT&T smartphone, and change my plan automatically. They say the network will poll my phone, and even if they change the plan back after it switches the first time, that before long it would switch again.
Since several users here have reported to using an Atrix and never having their plan changed, I'm not sure this is true. But maybe with my plan being changed without my knowledge in the past... maybe I AM doomed to change my plan unless I use another non-standard phone?
While my phone is personal, I've spoken to my corporate account mananger who I work with on a daily basis. We didn't get very far with a representative at a store last night, despite her knowing him well. He said the system will change it, and there is nothing we can do. But if anyone knows better, I'd sure appreciate their input.
Went ahead and looked up my plan online, so I could tell you the exact plan I'm using now. It's listed as "Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones (Messaging Unlimited required)". Which is bogus, cause I never agreed to change my plan from the smartphone plan I had in the past. If it hadn't been working just fine with non-network smartphones the last 3+ years, I guess I'd have noticed it sooner.
So I guess if I don't wanna change my data plan, I'll have to use non-network device. Really sucks, cause I don't think there IS a non-AT&T qHD phone that will work on their network at the moment. Though I'd love to hear I'm wrong...
T mobile pyramid maybe?

So the problem is not that you wont be able to keep your unlimited plan its that you're paying $10 a month for an unlimited plan and if you get a new phone you'll have to pay $30 a month. If that is the correct issue than what they are telling you at AT&T is correct. The plan you are on has been updated and you will have to change if you get a new phone. With that said... I would tell you just to go ahead and bite the bullet and pay the difference. You will pay less going to the more expensive data plan over 2 years then you would if you buy a phone no contract phone. But that's my opinion.
Why not just go with a carrier that actually offers unlimited to anyone without jumping through hoops?
thanks of your leading i was also facing the same problem in my phone but i hope now i will cover it and this is a good news which you have updated us and thanks to share with us

the qhd display on the atrix uses pentile display technology. Which quite frankly sucks. I was really excited about it too, and expected the screen to look something like the iphone's retina display which is 960x640. But nope, it lacks major sharpness, and text and small pixels just look bad.

I'm going to play pessimistic jerk (not hard for me) because I loved my Triumph. So here's my "Triumph over Exhibit" list:
The Triumph pretends to be a Motorola, but the Exhibit pretends to be a Galaxy SII. Why either company is trying for the honor of "worst phone with our high-end label on it" I will not know, but this SII isn't.
The screen is smaller. Than a Galaxy S.
The camera has fewer pixels. Two million. That's pixel genocide.
I strongly doubt T-Mobile included a hotspot feature unless they really got sloppy. A lot of websites list specs that aren't there, or list arbitrary specs. I won't believe they did that one until I see evidence.
I honestly would go buy one if I could somehow get my triumph sold, but it seems like once a phone is activated on VM you're pretty much screwed. You can call them up and transfer it to another VM number... but nobody in the market for a phone will want to deal with all that.
The 100 minutes is a killer, but if you're a voip user its not really an issue. The only thing that REALLY makes me want to switch is the 4g. I guess ill just hold out and hope that VM eventually upgrades their mobile network.

Seriously, call Virgin Mobile, tell them the truth, they'll probably replace it.
After using the 4.1" screen of the Triumph, I wouldn't be able to go down to 3.7".

That's my killer. After having a large screen I don't think I could go smaller. Besides now running MIUI it's a really nice phone.
All I can say is the op must be a salesman, he/she has this same exact thread posted on just about every android forum I read.
IMHO it (samsung exhibit II) is a downgrade to the triumph, however, the one thing it has that I wish the triumph (virgin mobile/sprint) had was GSM.
I think the triumph kicks @ss with CM7, hopefully CM9 works just as well

Yes, Mister Rep, my friend was using the phone and got extremely angry at it. And seems to have smashed the screen. And poked it. And attempted to snap it in half, crosswise. Am I still eligible for phone insurance?
No, Mister Rep, he's not my friend anymore.

Actually it under specs the MT in most departments. The only thing that it has over the MT is 4g and maybe less hardware bugs. If you want an alternate get any post paid T-mobile phone and get a prepaid activation kit activate it online and choose the $30 plan. There are plenty of dual core 4g phone's that you can get for fairly cheap used or new on ebay, amazon, or craigslist.
good deal as a backup plan, but I'm still at grandfathered prices so still happy and comfy with my triumph and service
I would rather get a Galaxy S 4G in good condition for that much $$...
Triumph is probably the best bang for buck as far as the spec/features you get. Only thing is they skimped on the hardware quality, so it's a crap shoot whether it'll be a lemon or not.
I may be the only one, but I'm going to stick with Virgin because of their awesome customer service. Yes, you may have to speak to several thickly accented indians before you are speaking to the right person, but once you are, they are really helpful usually. My old triumph broke (think it was overheating, but not sure; bought it used), and after telling them it wouldn't turn on, they agreed to send me a refurb. After waiting 5 days to get the refurb (they told me they would overnight it), I got a month of service for free. Not sure how good T-Mobile is.
Also, the plan is much MUCH better on Virgin. I can go over 300 minutes a month without being forced to permanently change plans. The $30/month gives you 100 minutes and unless you change plans to a much more expensive plan, you cannot get more. And if you change to the more expensive plan, you are not allowed to revert to the $30/month plan unless you buy a new SIM card. Pretty ridiculous.
I'm kinda confuse too. I have my triumph since September, paying $25 a month and can't really complain. But Most of the time when I'm home, people keep saying that they can't call me even my phone is on.
I also having a TM samsung vibrant right now that is not in use. I am thinking about going for that $30 plan and have better services. ( If it announced before I bought my triumph I may not be here lol )

Just so you're aware, being on Tmobile will not give you better service (necessarily). Your signal depends on where you live. For example, where I currently am, Tmobile has no signal, but Sprint/VM has an awesome signal. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Sprint has a larger network than Tmobile. Can anyone else verify?

well T-MO is the smallest of the 4 networks so I would assume that would mean they have a smaller network. Although where I am I get a almost perfect signal with T-MO and got hardly any signal with VM. The best thing that you could do would be to check coverage maps... (although the VM map for my area says I'm in a good signal area...)
Just a thought but does anyone else really feel that in this day and age with TuneIn and numerous other internet radio apps that having an fm tuner in your phone is a major plus selling point. With modern technology almost seems to be a solution to a non-existent problem, Oh well just my thought for the day, Clint
I have had some isuses with verizons 4G LTE network and am thinking of going 100% AT&T again. I still have my galaxy S2 and like it alot, but want 720p and LTE. the S4 seems nice too.
I may wait for the galaxy S3 or maybe verizon can some how fix this crap. (Yea right)
Any way: I won't do it with out a unlimited data plan, becuase I don't see a use for LTE and 720p with only 3GB to play with. ( I have a "unlimited non-smartphone" data plan on my GT-9100 but I don't think it will work with this phone.)
I have made a list of pros and con's for this phone:
Pros:
1) It will be out soon.
2) It's on AT&T's BETTER LTE network.
3) The 28nm S4 seem's like a blast vs any thing else.
4) The 720P SLCD2 seems alot better this time vs the SLCD of 2011.(I will need to see this for myself, to make sure it lives up to the videos I have seen.)
5) HTC can make a good phone when they make it the "ONE". LOL
Con's:
1) It's GPU does not seem like a big boost VS the CPU power.
2) Non-removable battery. ( If this phone acts like my RAZR, I will be yelling NOOOOOO like in the movies. If it's better than my S2 at not locking up, then not so bad.)
3) No SD cards. ( I would be alot more ok if they had 32 and 64GB phones for sale.)
4) I don't like the buttion layout. ( I wish it was like the S2 with a push down home key.)
ok so to be or not to be HTCed. ready set comment
This is why the big red sucks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDxJoGv3FLA
I would wait for the S3 as Samsung promised much better battery life (maybe around 2300mAh+). The LG Optimus 4X also has 2100mAh battery. Hopefully they could deliver 7-8 hour screen time which would be a dream. I would 120% get one if that was the case. One X's battery is meh (1700mAh), maybe around 4-5h screen time max.
I don't know about the One X display, but my Sensation display looks pathetic compared to my girl's S2. SAMOLED is just so much prettier than anything else.
No microSD is also sad .
But i love HTC designs and Sense UI that's why i chose HTC. ICS Touchwiz is one big fat uggo (albeit very smooth).
If you want best spec, you may want to wait for the S3, if you want pretty and useful experience, i guess you cannot go wrong with the One X.
I am more for useful than "pretty".
It's a 50/50 split on a ONE XL fourm. LOL
I really want my next phone to be LTE, but I will say H+ can be pretty good and even play in the same court in REAL world phone use. When I first got my GT-9100, I took it in to a verizon store and mobed the foor with all the best phones all the way every time intill the RAZR tied or beet it most of the time. (I should have seen, the phone had isuses, but I wanted unlimited LTE so bad, becuase my home internet sucks.)

You have the unlimited dumb phone plan on AT&T? If you buy any smartphone from AT&T, they will switch you to a smartphone plan. Not positive, but I don't think they can switch you to an unlimited smartphone plan in this case. But it never hurts to ask (demand?).

I understand your desire for LTE, but have you thought about going with the HTC One X? It doesn't have LTE, but I think the support will be much greater over on those forums. Not to mention, since it won't come with an IMEI that AT&T will recognize considering it's an "international" phone, you should be able to just pop the sim in that you have now for your S2.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that would work for you. Yes, it wouldn't be subsidized, but you bought an international S2, so I assume that wouldn't be a problem for you.
Wouldn't the SIM card be different though? I heard the One X will be using a micro-SIM and AT&T phones use the standard SIM card?

The phones will be using microSIM, and those are available from most providers upon request.
Well I know for sure the odds are stacking up against the razr. Fac reset has failed me and I knew it would, but you know how it is.
Update: They are sending me a refurb. I don't know if this will fix anything, but AT&T is looking better and better to come back to 100%
Update2: I think I will wait and see what the galaxy s3 has to bring to the table. This Droid Razr I have sucks eggs by the way. I don't care for subs, but I don't really want to buy any more "3G"/H+ phones. After having a 4G LTE phone no matter how much it sucks, you still will feel the need for 15+mbs every now and then. My ISP sucks too and I like Netflix so yea. I used 94GB on Verizon one time, because I could only pull less than 1mbs DL from my ISP and I pay for 10mbs DL and 1UL. The funny part is I get 100kbs more UL speed than I pay for, but 1/2 to 1/10 of the DL speed I pay for.( TWC SUCKS)
Ok thats all for now
Hiw did you get it to work if so?
Anyone?

After years of the Tmobile $250 a month no matter what your plan. I had 2 phones with 10gig plans for $250, went down to 2gigs on both, $250 a month. Not only is simple as fast if not faster, even though its Tmobile's network, its truly unlimited high speed Internet! No limits, $60 a month, period.

Totally agree. I was paying $120/month with sprint. It was a $99 plan but with all their bull shart taxes and fees, it came out to $120/month and whatever else they decide to charge you for. Simple mobile has no surprises. $60 flat a month for unlimited everything and if you dont pay you dont get service, simple as that. Once you pay for the next month, phone is back on, and also no extra fees, simply unlimited. I love it.
Oh and make sure its a tmobile phone you are hooking up or you wont get 4g beooooooooooooootch!

Good to know... on the subject of WiFi calling I was looking for it as well. I do like what you say about the cost, but seeing how my current GSM phone didn't get reception at my house with TracFone; I am looking for a network which can use WiFi when I am in my house.
Seeing how I'm home most of the time I will need to be able to receive phone calls at my house. I did hear that Metro PCS is also a T-Mobile carrier phone system which can use WiFi calling. I do believe you phone needs to actually support WiFi calling in order to do so.
I have a ZTE Axon 7 mini which is currently on Marshmallow(Android 6.**) however the Nougat (Android 7.**) OS is in Beta testing and once that is done my phone will have WiFi calling ability with T-Mobile. I say all of this due to the fact the phone was only $210 with 3gb RAM (Memory), 32gb ROM, 5.2" AMOLED display, Voice & Finger Print, NFC, dual Nano GSM or SDCard & GSM. Honestly I love the phone so much I'm going to find a network to use it on... I is quick responsive and in a month I'll have Nougat as well. I paid nearly as much for another phone which is just god Awful :crying: Samsung Galaxy Prime I think is the model.
I've been shopping for an affordable phone and the only one which has the same specs is Amazon phone, but they strip out the NFC card for US customers, which seems to be the norm. All other reasonably priced phones seem to neglect NFC or RAM. I have been using mine to surf web/play games/Audio Book player till I actually use all the minutes I have on TracFone or Nougat is released. :victory::silly:
So I've got a bunch of questions. I am a Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G guy coming from Verizon's network. I'm wondering about the Galaxy S Relay 4G as my next phone.
-I've heard coverage is bad on T-Mobile. Is it hard to switch to straight talk? Would I use an AT&T sim card, or T-Mobile sim card for straight talk? Does coverage vary?
-How fast is this phone on 4.4.2? The Epic is kind of sluggish on 4.4.2 - which is understandable given the single core, 1ghz proc. This is why I want to upgrade.
-Any opinions coming from CDMA? I've never used a GSM phone before. I know plenty about CDMA phones, but nothing about GSM.
-Are there any slider phones on the horizon? I was thinking about waiting for the Droid 5, but it doesn't seem like it's ever going to be more than a pipe dream.
Thanks in advance!

if you unlock the relay you can use the att based sim card but i cant confirm youll get 4g...i used straight talks tmobile based sim (normal sized) and it works perfectly...exact same as tmobile as it runs on tmobile towers....for me (in California) data was not slow for me on their tmobiles 4g (h+) networks...a new slider phone has come out this year but was pretty crappy compared to relay 4g...was an lg slider..the relay is the best choice you have if you want a slider phone if you ask me... the prior phone i had before the relay was the htc rezound (verizon network) and to me relay even out performs it by a long shot in terms of both speed and stability....to be honest 4.4.2 roms on the relay are quite fast....of course not quad core fast like a nexus 5 or s5 lol but many miles faster than the epic 4g (speaking from experience)....having a custom rom on it like lets say my liquid build is also much faster than stock plus much better battery life...

Welp, that pretty much settles it! So to sum it up:
-If TMob doesn't work, I should get an AT&T sim card, but I have to find out if 4G works on straight talk this way.
-No advantage to straight talk over t mobile except unlimited everything?
-The relay is a good purchase
-I should sell this POS galaxy S4 quickly so I can buy a relay, haha.
Even if a droid 5 comes out...I dunno. I HATE the keyboard of the droid 4. I don't know why the keys have to be right next to each other!
If anyone else has comments, let me know! I live in Central New York and they seem to have coverage.

Wait...do you have an epic 4g or galaxy s4? Also straight talk has a cap of 3gb usage a day. which isn't bad as its daily and not monthly on that data cap and the fact that its 5 bucks cheaper than T-Mobile prepaid monthly with similar bandwidth cap. The relay is a tmobile phone so straight talks T-Mobile based sim is what is guaranteed for 4g which beats 3g by a long shot as well which is what you may get on their att based card if you decide to do the free unlock that's guided in the threads here. I again use the T-Mobile based aim in the relay and get 4g no problem... Also a good purchase in my opinion but depends on how much you are paying for the relay...you can get one for near mint for under 100 bucks if you look on eBay.

I currently use an Epic 4G. I picked up a galaxy S4 off of eBay for cheap thinking that those bluetooth keyboards would be my saving grace.
No dice. They suck. Every single one of them is a variation of one on the market with a different brand name. They are all identical. Price ranges from $20 to $100.
T-mobile currently has a deal where you supply your own phone and it's $30/month for 100 minutes talk, unlimited text, and 5gb of 4G data.
And yes, I was looking on eBay

Ouch...100 mins of talk sucks...on straight talk though it is required to have the 45 dollar plan while using a smartphone....trust me they'll know if your running a smartphone just by data usage alone...but then again data is also unlimited as well as talk and text for 15 bucks more. I will say relay isn't as fast as s4 obviously because its a quad core phone and more ram. But comfortably fast in how it runs...its a great phone if you ask me...pretty comparable to an s3 on stock rom just slightly less snappy

I use less than 30 minutes a month on my current plan, so it's a non-issue. I text like a fiend, though. T-mobile's plan doesn't say there's a limit to data, just that you only get the first 5gb at 4G speeds a month. Perfect for my cheap ass
