Screen not turning on, but HDMI works - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone.
My dads TF101 all of a sudden decided not to turn on. Now we were trying to fix it and he decided to plug the HDMI in to a computer and voila the screen pops up and the touchscreen works, but not on the tablet. I'm wondering if reflashing a rom (I'm running Eos 2-21 (not the latest I know..)) would possible fix the problem, if not putting it to stock and warrantying the tablet. But i'm also wondering does CWM work via HDMI. Any help would be appreciated =D

My guess - your backlight or screen stopped working. It could be a loose connection, the display cable runs around the battery and if it is dropped it can come unplugged.
Flashing a different ROM or re-flashing is not going to fix a hardware issue like the screen not working. Just to be sure, do you see the Eee Pad logo when you turn it on?
Also, if you shine a flashlight on the screen, can you see the screen faintly? If so, then it is the backlight that went. If you cannot see anything, most likely it is the screen that stopped working.
If you are still under warranty, the easy thing to do is to flash back to stock. You can try using recovery, but I am not sure the HDMI will work with that. If not, you can use EasyFlasher and flash the stock firmware via APX mode. See the EasyFlasher thread in the dev section.

When i turn it on there is a light but its as if it's a black screen.
Never saw that EasyFlasher, that will make things a lot easier. And yeah three year wanrrenty, makes me feel a lot better about dropping the cash on one of those now that I actually need to use it

If it lights up, but no screen, then it is your TFT that has gone, the backlight is still working.

Well wither way the screens gone. seriously thank you so much least now I know what is wrong
One more question, does CWM work while in HDMI mode because i could flash the stock software that way

I can't answer your CWM question (my guess would be no), but if you use easyflasher, all you need is working APX mode and a windows computer. All the details are in the tread.

Transformer won't turn on /:

So I tried everything in all the other threads and it's still a no go for me. This is extremely disappointing, I was really loving this thing.
I'm scared to even attempt going through Asus's terrible customer service, especially with my TF being rooted and all...
any advice on what I may be able to do?
what happens when you plug it in? Does charger get hot? Try leaving plugged into powered usb overnight.
I had an issue where I left my transformer a week ago plugged into the electricity, and when I came back home - it was out of battery and refused to turn on. I tried plugging into the computer directly but that didn't help either.
Today I went to best buy and plugged it into an adapter on display, and it started working..
When I came back home, I tried my cable again and it suddenly worked!
The moral of the story is it seems the power adaptors are quite flaky. Try to disconnect and connect again..
Also see this thread with some tips on fixing the power adaptor:
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...er-no-longer-charges-wall-wart-adapter-4.html
I highly doubt the charger is the problem in my particular case because the dock seems to charge fine. Also, my TF died on my when it still had around 80% battery life.
Another thing is that my alarm clock that I have set up on my TF still goes off every morning and the only way for me to turn it off is by repeatedly pressing the power button (this is extremely annoying).
I'm assuming that the screen may have just completely died or something of that sort.
Do you guys have any other advice, or should I just go ahead and attempt to rma it?
thanks it advance
I had this same thing happen to my TF a few weeks ago. The solution for me was to use the tool in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
I used v6.3 for my US 8.6.5.9 rom version. This basic steps I took were to install the APX driver (steps in the thread above), then run the batch file and do 4, 5, & 6. I didn't see anything on my TF screen until the above was completed and then turning it on.
Hope this helps you.

Was your transformer already rooted? It seems as if this tool is for rooting transformers, and mine is already rooted with a custom rom loaded onto it.
Can you please walk me through exactly what you did to get this process to work?
I'm pretty desperate as of right now!
Edit: So apparently my TF is still capable of connecting to my PC and I can view all of the folders on the internal memory as well as put it in APX mode, does this mean there is still hope for me?
Please guys, if anybody has some insight on how I could possibly fix this, it would mean more to me than you can imagine.

I am very interrested in this thread as I have the very same problem.
Asus proposed to RMA it but I fear that they might find some trace of the previous root as I unrooted "blindly"

yeah, that is what i'm worried about as well.
What number did you contact for the RMA?
Well apparently my only option is to RMA the device.
I went ahead and un-rooted it with the BRK toolkit, however after un-rooting it said that I have to load a stock rom and recovery image onto it. How do I go about doing this without turning it on and flashing the zip in recovery?
Do you all think ASUS will even notice it is rooted and if so what steps should I take to ensure that there is no proof of root?
Please help me a bit on this one guys.
I had the same issue with mine last week. Appeare dead but would connect to PC APX mode and could view SD card contents.
When looking at the screen with a flashlight, the text was visible. The unit was actually working but the backlight had died.
Had to get it replaced with new one from place I bought it from on their product replacement scheme. great except its a new one that can't be rooted yet.
Sitting patiently for that to be released so I can go back to playing....

Yes, my TF was rooted and running a custom ROM. When running the batch file that is in the package in the other thread I referenced, I did steps 4, 5, and 6. Then rebooted and it was fine. If you can get the APX driver installed and your computer will recognize it, then try those steps using the tool. Once I rebooted, it just loaded my same ROM as if nothing had happened.
Of course a hardware failure would cause the same thing (backlight or LCD not working, etc...) but in my case it was a software or booting issue and the above fixed it. If you try what I did and still nothing then RMA is probably your only option.
i had this problem too, in my case it was a defective power button. had to push it real hard to get the pad turned on ... rma fixed it ....
i have the same problem also and it turned out to be the power button my solution was just to keep pressing it haha and then it worked strangely enough. ive read somewhere that it it gets misalligned somehow. i guess i have 2 options either send it back or fix it myself at the moment im just living with it.
it works somedays then otherdays it takes a few pushes lol
My case seems to be none of the above.
I tried checking if it was an issue with the back light and put a flashlight up to it in a pitch black dark room but I can't see anything on the screen whats so ever, regardless of the angle I put it in.
I also don't think it is the power button because like I said, i'm able to put he tablet in APX mode and take it out of APX mode as well at will by pressing the power and volume up button.
Thirdly, I tried the root kit several times (version 7) and while it's doing it's job of rooting and un-rooting my TF, there still is no change in the functionality of the screen.
so i'm pretty much sol. I already placed in an RMA to asus, now I just have to ship it off (asus has by far the worst customer service that I have ever seen).
My final question would be is there anyway to load a stock rom and recovery image without being able to turn the tablet on? I'm able to unroot it with the rootkit, but it says that I still need to load a stock rom and whatnot.
If somebody can point me towards directions as to how I go about doing this, that would be great.
Thanks for all the help guys.

[Q] Need help with blank screen after replacement

Hi all. I'm having an issue with a 727R. I replaced a broken screen and now can't get the screen to stay on. Its a non rooted, factory 2.3.5 phone. When I turn it on, the sghi-727r screen pops up for several seconds and then dissappears, phone vibrates once, notification sounds appear shortly and all touch functions appear to work (by sound and haptic feedback). For all intents and purposes, this phone is on and working perfectly...if you're blind lol. I know the replacement screen works because it works perfectly if I go into download (odin) mode. I've been searching threads and haven't been able to come up with a solution, as most of the other blank screens are from bad flashes. Keep in mind that I am also testing this with the casing removed as it is a repair for a friend (if that makes any difference). Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Is the brightness maybe turned ALL the way down? When it finishes booting shine a flashlite on the screen and tell me if u can see text, icons etc...
I'll do that as soon as I get home this afternoon. I could only hope that's all it is, but i'm a little skeptical that I could be so lucky. forgot to mention that I have also odin flashed the stock rom back on just in case of software corruption. I would also think that I would get full boot logo's during the boot sequence, but hey!....its definately worth a shot! I've seen stranger things . Thanks for the quick response.

So you had display for start of boot and d/l mode? If so, then I'll go no farther until I get another replacement screen.:crying:. Come to think of it, when plugged in and off, the charge symbol shows up for a second and its discoloured (almost like its made of vertical lines that are pinks and grays). You may have just saved me a lot of time. I was leaning toward trying to adb error logs in hopes of finding something. Other than that it was going to be a reflow on the gpu since the phone did do a leap of faith from 6 ft up....and lost lol.

[Q] Recover HTC One S internal data without USB debugging ON

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. My wife has an HTC One S whose screen was severely cracked and damaged when she was hit by a car when crossing the street (the phone came out of her purse and was ran over). I have been trying to recover the pictures and videos that she had in the internal storage since the HTC One S does not have an SD card; however, her phone does not have USB debugging ON and it is impossible for me to enable this setting since the screen is cracked, damaged, and not visible. What are my options? your help is greatly appreciated!
Depends... Is it rooted/have custom recovery? Otherwise you'll have to blind navigate to turn debugging on.

No, the phone is not rooted nor does it have any custom recovery. I cannot blind navigate because the screen is cracked and dark and it does not seem to respond to any touch.

I have to agree with dark here. If it doesnt respond to touch theres nothing you can do.
Its like trying to control a PC without keyboard, screen or mouse. Willpower isnt enough
Oh wait, actually.. Is it running JB? In that case you can connect a mouse with an OTG cable, and blind navigate with that. It wont be easy, but its the only thing I can think of.
If it isnt running JB,,, Well... Then theres no other way.
same case with rooted htc one s and cyanogenmod

What about the HDMI to Micro USB cords. I cant remember what they are called.
If I recall when I hooked mine up to one I didn't have to do anything to get it to show up on the screen.
edit: of course I guess that doesn't help if you digitizer isn't responding/
Try throwing it at a wall. I usually try that at least once or twice as a last resort. It has worked many times for me.
edit: don't do that. results vary. probably not for the better.
Its 2019 is there any current method now that u can force your self into the stock ROM?

Nexus 5 Screen will not light up

Hey guys I've had my N5 for almost a year now but it seems to have gone kaput on me recently...
On Monday I was on a skype call, (just audio) when my phone suddenly restarted, I didn't pay much mind to it as that happened before and it would usually just cut back on, but this time, it restarted, and restarted and just didn't stop. That lead me to think its the power button being stuck so i checked it out and made sure its not being depressed and well yeah it wasn't. And soon after that the phones screen was sometimes on during the reboots and sometimes off. I knew it was rebooting because the N5 vibrates a bit when Google pops up on the loading screen in a certain way, but yeah now the screen doesn't light up at all, there's still vibrations and sounds like when I call or when I say Okay Google a few times, the LED will even light up during a call. I know the phone is "on and working" in the background but the screen doesn't light up and as such I can't touch it, any ideas and or advice friends?
bump de bump?
Possibly your backlight burnt out? Water damage?
if you are running cyanogenmod, you could be experiencing sod "sleep of death". thats when you know the phone is on and working, but the screen doesnt turn on. ive been reading lots of complaints about cm and the sod.

As the phone kept rebooting it went from seeing everything, to seeing nothing but the back light to dark, so maybe? It was just by me on my desk too so I was doubtful about the water damage but I put it in the sealed rice bag for about 24 hours just in case but still no luck.
I actually am running cyanogenmod and whenever I do have a problem I always feel that its related to CM as the phone doesn't have any physical damage...maybe I should look into that, any other ideas friends?
P.S I am using the ElementalX Kernel and UNFORTUNATELY I turned on the FAST CHARGE USB option and that makes the phone play funny with the computer, if you guys have any advice as to how I could turn off that option please do let me know

all it does is completely wipe your phone and install an older android version. flashing the factory img will do the same, except youll get the newest android version. don't use these tools, doing things the right way will be more beneficial to you. anyways, since cm is having issues, try a different rom, or just go stock.

Well i got mine through the Play Store and I did think about an RMA, I know there was that free screen replacement thing going on but the customer rep sounded like he had no idea what I was talking about. and I'm thinking its a flex cable issue as my phone hasn't incurred any damage from drops or bumps or anything since i make it a point to be stationary while using phone, but....where the sim card tray is, that "bridge" or thin piece on the bottom side toward the phone has split as a result of my bad sim card ejecting, but that was when i first obtained the phone, also there is another split, inside the phone there is a canopy above the charging port that is split but i still know that occurred long before this, and its not even an electrical piece along with the sim card bridge thing.
BUTTT yeah im afraid if I RMA they will use that as an excuse to charge me $400, even though I know it's not playing any sort of factor in my screen acting up....Is there a policy on that?

Check to make sure you have the newest drivers (there's a sticky in the general section with all the useful info). If you bought it from the play store see if you can get an RMA - Google seems to have a good rep with this. It wouldn't hurt to flash a factory image to erase everything either before sending it off (privacy and whatnot). If you have the newest TWRP (2.8.0.1) if you boot into recovery and you should be able to access the internal storage without having to select anything (in case there's anything there not backed up). Boot to recovery is volume down twice and power I think.

[Q] Broken graphics, screen, or software problem?

Hi, the other day while I was using my OPO as a GPS unit in the car, it seemed to freeze and restart, but it didn't boot. I thought it was just an empty battery problem. But since then, I haven't been able to use my phone again.
Apparently, it boots correctly, but I can't see anything on the screen. I say it boots correctly because I can hear the notifications, the led blinks, and I can even feel the feedback if I touch the capacitive buttons. Also I was able to backup my data through adb. But the screen is completely black. The only moment where it shows something is at the moment of booting, where the cyanogen logo should be, but it's completely scrambled (see attachment)...
I tried going back to stock (with the help of Bacon Root Toolkit) with no luck.
Has anyone faced the same problem? Do you think it might be a software problem? Otherwise, do you think it's a screen problem that I can fix changing the screen? Or it might be a problem with the GPU and changing the screen will not accomplish anything?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Capelare.
PS: Well, apparently I can't post the image since I just registered. It's here anyway: i_imgur_com/V9oH2el.jpg Just change the _ for dots, please. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Nobody knows what might be the problem?
Reflashing didn't help anything? Even with wiping all data?
Then i think its an hardware- based problem.

Try booting into fastboot (volume up and power when off) you will hear a vibration and fastboot mode should come up, if this doesn't happen, it's pretty much a dead giveaway that the hardware is broken

Reflashing didn't help anything? Even with wiping all data?
Then i think its an hardware- based problem.

Thank you! Nothing happens with any of those methods. So yeah, I also suspected that it's a hardware problem... But do you know if I can figure out if it's the screen or the graphics system (I don't know how to call it other than graphic card... and it's not a card lol) before purchasing a screen replacement... Any ideas?
Thanks again,
Capelare.

I find it hard to believe that the gpu is broken, the cpu, gpu and more are all on a single chip and I don't think one part can just fail without the others failing too... but you never know, if you can still send it to oneplus for warranty do it, it saves you a lot of time. If you can't there are a few things you can do:
1. If you had usb debugging enabled and authorized to your pc, you can try to use some screen mirroring software on your pc that works via usb.
2. Contact a repair shop that will allow you to test a new or used display with your current phone.
3. Try connecting your one to a tv by using a micro usb to hdmi cable (DON'T KNOW IF THE ONE SUPPORTS THIS!!).
Good luck!

Thanks, I can't send it to oneplus because this screen is already a replacement and I changed it myself. I will try asking for another display
I didn't know the gpu and the cpu were on the same chip, but I also think it's not likely that one would fail and not the other.

Capelare.
