Safestrap / TWRP restore question - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I’m running w/ the Droid Razr Maxx HD (non-dev edition) and I’m currently running the stock ROM 4.1.1 but I do have root, and safestrap installed. I’m aware before I apply the OTA update 4.1.2 to have Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper backup root, do temp unroot, and then defrost all the bloated apps.*
I’d like to be able to retain the ability to downgrade back down to ICS, should something catastrophic happen w/ my phone. I have backed up the stock 4.1.1 ROM through TWRP.* Is there anything outside or beyond the ROM that’s updated when these OTA’s are applied?* I’m just curious should I have to downgrade back to 4.1.1 that Matt’s utility will still work.*
Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to root and still get OTA?

This is my daughters xoom. I really only want to root it to use Titanium Backup.
Is it possible to rooted with normal method by flashing cwm and flashing root from there using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
and then somehow reflash the stock boot/recovery images.
Would this allow a rooted device with OTA updates?
You can flash stock ROMs on a rooted device: yes.
However: during the process of rooting all of your data will be wiped, so you might want to check with your daughter if that's okay with her!
If you want to stay up-to-date with your Xoom (even before the stock ROMs come out!) my advice to you is to flash team EOS 2.0 on it.
It is extremely stable, runs ICS (even if you have the 3/4G model!)
I think that it's possible to get OTAs if you flash the stock ROM.
Watch out however! If you haven't installed VooDoo OTA RootKeeper, you will lose your root!
So: Install Voodoo OTA RootKeeper if you want to keep your ROM up to date with stock images, while remaining rooted!
Hope this helped, if so, please thank my post, sothat I start my sunday morning with a great feeling!

[Q] Receive OTA updates on Rooted phone

Hello everyone,
I'm a noob to rooting and the whole flashing custom ROMs.
I rooted my Verizon GS3, installed ROM Manager, and flashed CwM Recovery. I then installed a "stock recovery" file in hopes of receiving OTA updates from Verizon w/o losing root. However, after installing the stock recovery, I lost root access.
My question is: can I receive Verizon OTAs on a rooted phone? If so, how? Any help is greatly appreaciated.
BTW, anyone know when JB 4.1 will be pushed to vz customers OTA?

Yes you can receive OTAs on a rooted stock setup, but you want to block these OTAs using something like OTA root keeper and don't install these updates as it will break root, and can cause a bunch of other headaches and problems. If you really want stock wait till a dev roots the latest OTA update then flash that to keep root acess. It will likely be a while probably 2013 at the earliest before Verizon pushes the JB update. If you want JB take a look at a custom ROM such as CM 10.

There is a thread with a ota updater for stock rooted and unlocked users. It lets you stay rooted and unlocked and get the updates. Not sure if it works with a custom recovery flashed though. I think its in the android development thread

Two other possible Options:
Can try this from cj64: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964502
might be more than you're looking for or not apply since you didn't mention about (un)locked bootloader.
open1your1eyes0 has a guide to go to the leaked JB verizon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114

[Q] ICS downgrade from JB

Is it safe to downgrade from stock jelly bean to stock ICS?
There reason I'm asking is that I wasn't able to get the Jelly Bean OTA to work so I manually flashed the Jelly Bean OTA using Odin. The one I flashed came pre-rooted and pre-loaded with a custom recovery. I want to have a completely untouched stock version of Jelly Bean, something I haven't been able to find here or elsewhere (I would get this by doing an OTA update to Jelly Bean from the stock ICS rom that I flash).
I'm thinking that the reason that I couldn't get the OTA to flash (it gave me an update fail notification every time) was because I wasn't completely stock on the previous ICS version, even though I had unrooted, relocked the bootloader, thawed bloat, etc.
If anyone could answer the first question, and the others I've raised, that would be great.
(I know that it is probably OK, but I wanted to double check since it was a major no-no to downgrade when I had a Droid Razr Maxx).
Yes, you can safely downgrade in order to take the OTAs.
Yes, your past OTA attempt probably failed because you weren't fully stock in some way. There is an error log stored on your phone that you could have checked for the exact cause. As a general note, OTAs require you to be on stock recovery, but not necessarily Unrooted.
You mention that you are unable to find a stock image file for the JellyBean update. This file is readily available here at XDA, and can be downloaded from the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Performing only Step 1 from that thread would leave you with a fully stock, unrooted, locked bootloader JellyBean ROM.

[Q] updating device.

I was just wondering, is the only way to be able to receive updates from Samsung is to be on the stock rom, I currently own a rooted Asus tablet with a stock rom But I can no longer receive Updates through Asus because of unlocked bootloader . So all in all I guess I'm asking how do the updates work on this phone with, root, unlocked boot loader, stock/custom roms. Thanks.

It's all the same for all devices, unlocked bootloader you don't get OTA. If you're using custom/stock rom with unlocked bootloader, you just have to wait for a repack stock rom or update custom rom. If you have rooted pure stock rom you should able to receive OTA and use OTA root keeper to preserve root. If you modify your build.props or removed system apps, the update will failed. Hope that answer your quesiton.

So from what I understand as long as Im on the stock rom even if its rooted I can receive updates and I need to use ota root keeper to continue to be rooted after an OTA update, correct?

I should probably add, if I had just rooted and got twrp and made a backup of the stock rom, then flashed a custom rom and if I wanted to update could I just reflash the backup of the stock in twrp to be able to update, this would be for if they Didn't have a custom rom out for the latest update. As of right now I have a tablet on ics but I cannot update to jb because I don't have the jb boot loader or whatever, but say I was to flash a stock Asus rom on ics And use OTA rootkeeper Would I then be able to flash jb custom roms? I assume the OTA update from ics To jb installs the correct boot loader instead of having to do it manually from a cimputer, big thanks for any help.

[Q] Restoring to stock?

I've just received a used VZW Razr HD (Maxx) on trade. It's rooted with unlocked bootloader on 4.04 (don't have the build number handy). It is not a developer version of the phone.
I understand I will lose root, but I wish to restore it to factory stock 4.1.2. While I'm not new to Android (also have a GS3 and a Droid Inc.), I am new to Motorola phones.
What's the procedure for flashing this thing to stock, locked bootloader and all? Have a source for the stock ROM? Any help is appreciated.
Matt's util in original android development should work for most common devices. Make sure your phone is the right variant and flash the stock ICS and receive the otas. Or you could use like rsdlite (which is available on the forums) and flash the stock 4.1.2 firmware on. Look for some of the devs other posts to figure it out. (The firmware is also on the forums).

Thanks. Does flashing the stock 4.1.2 firmware also restore stock Verizon apps ("bloatware") and any changes made to the bootloader? I presume I can flash this despite changes made to stock apps (missing .apk's, frozen apps, etc.)?
How about returning to stock recovery? What's the procedure there? Can I find the necessary .zip file and flash with Matt's utility?
