[Q] Should I buy a Nexus S?

Hi there. I am an LG P500 user. This phone is kinda normal, here are the specs:
MSM7227 Processor 600MHz
512MB of RAM
3.0 MP Camera
320x480 MDPI Screen resolution
Stock Froyo, can be updated to 2.3.3 official Gingerbread or unofficial CM7 (2.3.7)
No support for internal memory card
Bluetooth 2.1
Phone may seem crappy, but just take a look at our LG P500 forums - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=839.
We have everything: TeamWin Recovery, official ClockworkMod,Unofficial CyanogenMod 7 port which is fully working, tons of custom ROMs (even based on CM7 source),Official 2.3.3 update, great themed ROMs and yes, even franco.Kernel.
But I want some more. So,@ Media World italian store nexus one is now 270€,so I've chosen that(for MIUI,Oxygen,CM7,AOSP etc. official support),probably, not sure. My stupid noob question is:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus is being released,so it will be leaving Nexus S back,am I right? It didn't happen for Nexus One,but I read somewhere that Google after 4.0 won't release official updates no more for it. Will this also happen with Nexus S? Just want to be sure .
I'm not sure if I understand your question. Are you asking if the original Nexus will continue to be supported by Google, or if the GNex will be superior to the NS?

The nexus s will most definitely get an update. Google has stated that it will release AOSP soon after it release the galaxy nexus.
If you would rather not spend a few hundred euros more for a phone, the nexus s a great alternative, even if its a little out dated.

if your going to buy the phone off contract, Id say do it while our phone doesnt have thousands of roms we have it were it counts and everything is nice and smooth
We might lose official support after ics but that would mean the next OS version is a long ways away
Nexus S is one good phone, and not obsolete at all yet. I'd recommend it. But it depends on what you plan to do with the phone, certainly a dual-core phone is better for gaming.
So,basically I am asking a simple question. After which Android release Nexus S is going to lose official support? I don't think it will lose it after ICS.

We don't know that.
However we assume it will lose support whenever it can't handle a version of Android that requires more than it has. ICS will be just fine, and it should not lose support after ICS. And even if it did, a port would most likely be quite easily made.
Yes I own nexus s and it is an awesome phone

A nexus s is a awesome phone, and yes google will eventually stop releasing updates for it. But if you dont have the money to buy a Motorola Razr or a Glaxy Nexus, the Nexus S is a great buy.
i'm very satisfy with nexus s battery life and a lot of developers support it, you should buy it if you are as poor as me
I upgraded to the nexus s from a kyocera echo(which could have been a good phone had kyocera released a recovery and it had some dev support.) and I've loved it since I got it. It's definitely a great phone and imo the best one in it's price range.
buy it. quality pure google phone. very satisfied user here.
Google has been asking for Android partners to go for *AT LEAST* an 18 month release cycle for its models, so that would mean that you'd get official updates up to about May/June 2012. They've never said explicitly they'd support the Nexus S for 18 months, but I think it's safe that they'd hold themselves to at least the same standards they want their partners to be. There's many articles online about the 18-months cycle, for example here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-clarifies-18-month-android-upgrade-program-details-far-f/
Now as to whether to buy the phone or not, I'd say go for it. I've had a ton of Android phones, including ones considered top of the line at some point of other, sgs2, lg 2x, you name it I've had it for at least two weeks. I love the Nexus' form factor, its weight, the amount of development that goes on and most of all, I LOVE that the stock rom is pure Android. The curved screen, in my opinion, is the most beautiful feature on the phone and I'd only swap this phone for a Galaxy Nexus.
290 is a damn good price. Go for it. Resale prices are also quite decent by the way, check ebay for used phones, they seem to sell for around 200-250 eur at the moment, and with them being among the first phones to get ICS, I doubt that will change that much.

I agree, it's an awesome, fast and stable phone, but if you got the money for it, you definitely want to buy a Galaxy Nexus.
The Nexus S is the first phone I've ever had where a successor was released and I didn't care a whit. I love this phone and am totally satisfied with it in every way. I can't wait to play with it with ICS loaded.
It's the perfect size for my hand, battery life and general performance are great, it runs all the software that I want, and is just a good-looking phone. The GNex may be most of these things as well (it's too big IMHO and battery life remains to be seen) but there's nothing driving me towards upgrading from my current phone.
If you don't care about upgraded hardware and can be happy with "last gen" technology, the Nexus S IMO is the best bang for your buck. It'll be supported for a long time to come if the generally favorable feeling its users seem to have towards it continues.
Ok,I may be buying it. But I'm still not sure:
No HDMI
No Dual-Core
No FM Radio (i heard somewhere it works with cm7 and miui)
Secondary camera is only 0.3 MPx.

By the time the Nexus S "loses official support", you'll want something else, anyway.

LG G2x

Hello All,
I want to ask you guys that I am getting this Phone in cheap like around $125. I need to ask you guys that in that price is the right phone also I heard that people are complaining regarding this phone which majorly include random reboot. If I root it and flashed it via any custom 4.0 rom will it fix these problems ? Also I didn't understand what are the GB roms mean ? If anyone can suggest me a gud MIUI or any 4.0 rom it would be great.
Many Thanks in advance for your help.

Do yourself and your sanity a favor. DON'T pick up this phone! It's backed by a lying company, and it's an Nvidia based product making it subject to Nvidia's stuck up policy for releasing hardware drivers. Get something else. You'll be happier you did. LG NEVER again!

So....for the sane response. If you're planning on sticking with the stock firmware, then I'd also say to move on to another phone. If you're comfortable flashing a custom rom, I'd say if you can wait a while the this will probably be one of the best phones available.
To clarify, stock on this phone is very poor. CM7 is pretty good, but still has some bugs and obviously lacks all the newer features of ICS/JB. Right now we don't have a good ICS/JB build, but we're hoping to have one soon. Source was recently released for one of our "sister" phones. RC (Arcee, Ricardo) has already released CM10 for the O2x, but is ironing out some details on it atm. The reasonable assumption is that after is done with that, he'll make a version for the G2x (as he did with the "hacked" version of CM9 in the past).
So in short....hardware's great, but software's crap. Hopefully we'll see improvement on the software side soon though

At $125, if you will be satisfied with running Android 2.3.4 such as the stock LG/T-Mobile V21E or V21Y or a modded ROM of either of those such as Weapon, then the phone is a bargain if it is also in very good condition. The phone may or, most likely, won't get any further updates to ICS and/or JB even from developers such as those on XDA or Cyanogenmod (CM10). If you want to get the latest Android, buy a newly released NEXUS qualified phone with JB which will also get future Android updates.
Yeah, for $125 you can pick up a new non-LG phone that is far superior in terms of support and feature set. Anyone who recommends you to buy an LG smartphone does not care for you the way I do. I want you to live your life, not sit here in an XDA forum like the rest of us waiting to be saved by the open source community.

Fixed your post. The p999 will be definitely getting CM10. Right now, were just in a period when all the other devs are being respectful to arcee and waiting for all the kinks to be worked out of the p990 CM10 before porting to the P999. Plus we will most likely get official CM support from arcee as well.

Respect. Odd concept these days unless between gangs when it is used as a warning before all hell breaks loose.
So far, even though asked repsectfully and politely, RC hasn't provided any information about providing CM10 for the P999. I think we're hoping that he will after he gets some of the problems with CM10 for the P990 remedied. Apparently, he doesn't have a P999 but there's a rumour that he's getting one which I hope he does so he can optimize CM10 for the P999 without a lot of iterative programming. It's difficult to figure out what's happening with other developers, whether they're holding back out of "respect" for RC or they're gone from P999 development (there's one XDA member currently trying to port the P990 CM10 ROM but is having serious difficulties doing it).
Hey buddy there isn't anything wrong with the g2x as a phone. It still has tetra 2 and plays well with a lot apps and games. Its much better than any low cost new phone out there.
Leave it stock and maybe rooted and you will be fine.
Unless lg releases ics for it you wont have a full working ics rom for it.
And the problem isn't nvidia! Tegra2 devices are everywhere and the t3 is one the highest demanded chips out there.
Lg isn't totally to blame either.
The problem is anytime you buy a branded version of a phone it has to wait to get its software out too. So since the g2x says T-Mobile on it, they are also the reason the phone doesnt have much respect for the dev community,
Have fun with your 100$ phone. Best you can't find a better one cheaper

I wouldn't let NVIDIA and LG off the hook for blame, they both have caused problems for the phones NVIDIA's chips are in and LG for the phones it makes. I own an unbranded Optimus 2X which is exactly the same as the T-Mobile G2X in every respect except that it is LG's branded phone. How did that happen? It's because it is a Canadian Optimus 2X which was sold by some Canadian cell phone service providers such as WIND Mobile and Mobilicity and operates on the same AWS bands as the T-Mobile G2X. It came with Froyo and, in spite of it being advertised as being upgradeable and to receive an upgrade to Gingerbread, it has not received any Android OS updates at all and, according to LG Canada, never will.
I'd say $75 would be the price I would recommend it at. I paid $200 with contract unfortunately

Determining which manufacturer provides best support/updates

So, I had idea, and I don't know if it's been done. I wondered if it would be useful to create a list of as many phones made by each manufacturer as possible, include the launch date, and determine the date of the last update provided. Based on this, we could take an average of how long each manufacturer provides updates for their devices before EOLing hardware (even though it's usually an artificial EOL since the devices are more than capable of running current releases). Would anyone be interested in this data, and would anyone like to assist me in this pursuit?
Interesting idea and it may take a lot of data analysis to figure that out.
Also something to consider is that does it differ by region? I spoke to one of my friends who works in Hong Kong Fortress (a big box store like Best Buy) and for HK, supposedly Sony and Samsung get the quickest updates. Him mentioning Sony definitely surprised me. After that it's HTC and then LG. except for the Nexus 4 of course.. I can attest to LG since my last phone Optimux 2X took forever to get updates available.
Also note that in HK, Motorola has pretty much given up on the market, so I don't think any of their phones get updates here anymore.
Your biggest issue will be that the OEMs dont control updates in alot of places. The carriers have most of the power when it comes to updates. The OEM may send them an update but the carrier can refuse to push the update to handsets.
of course, sony and samsung privde updates the fastest and newer versions of android(samsung updates its 2 year old dual cores to 4.2.2 adn some of them come from 2.3).Htc is also up with updates, but a bit slower.Well,lg is out of the list. They never update their phones. The promised a ics update for my e730 last summer and i still run on gb

This sounds about right. Those "Dual-core" phones were the Galaxy i9100 and the S2 Skyrocket variant for AT&T for 4.1.2. Instead of Sony: I would put ASUS next. Their TF300 got the 4.2 update back in March. In-fact: ASUS Support has no restrictions about recommending Custom ROMs and will even link you to a few.
Sony and LG are like....eh. I'd even add HTC to the list. They put out a list, but it's ages before we hear from them again.
I dream of a future when we have open platforms and we can update devices at our will...

Yes LG is indeed the worst. The official GINGERBREAD update came out for the Optimus 2X in December 2012... and it was extremely buggy, pretty much unusable. Needless to say I ditched the phone in March.

Is it possible for GT 7.7 to get official Android 4.2.2

Hi All,
hope you all just fine, and rocking with your tabs.

We have not even got Jelly Bean for the 6810 yet. Samsung are hopeless.

The 4.1.2 they released for the 6800 caused a number of issues, and seemed rushed out the door.
With the recent upgrades to 4.2.2 (Tab 2 7) , and the fact that Samsung already mentioned that dual-core based system will end with 4.2.2, I'm hoping that they have decided to skip 4.1.2, and provide one last update to 4.2.2
Having said that, I don't see myself buying other Samsung products. For what seems forever, service provider & manufacturer's blame each other, for the slow pace of updates.
This and other issues (Apple injunctions, etc.) are not valid arguments, where Wi-Fi only devices are concerned. If you sell a premium product for a premium price, then you should support it.
FWIW I've been running the 4.1.2 ROM for some time now and it's been fine. Yes, the 7.7 is EOL. But then even as is I still use it daily. Fine tab. Does everything I require for entertainment. Actually, while I'm sure I'll go through many tabs in the future I somehow doubt I'll part with the "little tab that scared Apple". lol
Sure, 4.2.2 or even 4.3 would be cool but really. Some slick extras, yes, but anything "killer"? IMHO, not really. If a device does what I need it to in a manner that I find satisfying,it's a "win". Do I agree with Samsung "flooding" the market with ten and one half dozen versions of the Note, Tab or whatever? Not really but then I ain't in charge there. Let form follow function. Get a device that does what you want and when/if upgrades come down the pike...all the better!
Just my two cents.

Yeah, as someone who just took the plunge to do a self-update to 4.1.2 I can say that the Tablet is still absolutely great to use, even if not the latest Android version.
However, as it was sold as such a premium product, Samsung SHOULD have kept it up to date with Android releases. The JB 4.1.2 is pretty much unofficial and is an 'at your own risk' option for most users (and some have experienced real problems).
Whilst I love the hardware dearly, seeing Samsung abandon it like they did has given me pause about buying more Samsung Android devices. I recently upgraded my phone and chose a Sony product instead of the various Samsung offerings (e.g. S4 mini in my case) specifically because I just do not trust Samsung to issue timely updates or even keep supporting their devices properly. Also it doesn't help that Touchwiz is not a great UI customisation - the Sony effort is much better - and frankly I'd have went for something pure Android like a Moto G if it had supported MicroSD. I'm about to buy a large 10" tablet and I won't even consider Samsung, it'll be between the Sony Tablet Z and probably the new Nexus 10 if Google ever release it....
Samsung really owe it to the 7.7 userbase to do one last update to at least 4.3, preferably 4.4 KitKat. Remember that the Tab should really have shipped with ICS but it wasn't ready so Honeycomb 3.2 was just a placeholder, ergo I wouldn't even count the long-delayed 4.0.4 release as an update. Given that 4.1.2 was only for a few Aisan markets, for most global users the 7.7 has never received a true update. Shame on you Samsung!!!!

Absolutely agree! Have you tried Danielhk's 4.4 ROM? Installed in a few days ago and it's pretty awesome!
As far as updates if I recall correctly the 7.7 was THE tab that scared hell outta Apple moving them to ramp up suing Samsung. I can imagine Samsung pulling back on updates for that reason possibly? Still screws over the people who shelled out $500-$600+ for the tablet though.
But then now with the 4.4 port from Daneilhk.....the GTab 7.7 just shines!!!
Its interesting comments which I think many agree with. To get ourselves to 4.1.2 most people around the world
with a few exceptions of the Asian counties, had to do a manual flash. Our device is still very capable as compared
to older and current devices. Yet we need some movement with the software.
My recent email to Samsung didn't offer much help. They said that no planned software update is known for this tab
and that my tab should still be using Android 3.2.
I didn't bother to make further contact, in fact my tab is supposed to be on Official ICS. As far as I've been
able to gather, 4.2.2 seems the most stable as reported below. I'm hoping to replacement my current 4.1.2
with this soon. Most of all I want stability, without much missing functions or problems and of course
having a p6800 device, we need sim access, calls and mobile data.
4.3 / 4.4 just seems to far away for the near future. Maybe we'll have a final kit kat for christmas
next year before everyone retires from the 7.7 development. We can hope (but our prayers won't change samsung's minds)

i saw a list that samsung wanted to develope 4.2.2 fot them and there were no 7.7 between them,
i dont know why samsung daesnt like 7.7,
its has more power that tab 2 and even tab 3,
its lighter, thiner, and powerfull, and even the samsung alled it amazing,a diffrent magic,
every body that has this tab loves it and it cant sell it,so do i,
i wanted to sell my tab and buy a tab 3 but when i saw that, it was so thick like a book, and with a 1.2 Ghz dual core cpu it was like a 800mhz singel, i hated,
when i saw (( UpInTheAir )) developed a rom with multi window with 4 app on the screen at the same time and floating mod,
i changed my mind, i wont ever sell my tab,
it actuall is a part of me, my life,
i really cant live without it,
but i cant understand samsung's problem with tab 7.7,
why?????

no problem, with the litigation with Apple, Samsung has discontinued development.
Then when it was decided that Samsung could continue to sell the device, it was too late.
My opinion is that it promises to take legal action. In January I will start. I'm not used to being fooled in this way.

i will let myself be suprised
There are lots of regions which Samsung have ignored. We can wait but if not new Official Jellybean for 7.7 Users by August 2014 then I think its safe to assume samsung will leave its customers out in the cold. Do we really want wait 8 months for Jellybean though?
I suspect that if Daniel's 4.4 becomes fully functional and stable we might just say you know what, Samsung... don't bother. Still if you can live with custom roms 4.2.2 is stable but you certainly need an additional memory mod like Pure performances to help speed it up and avoid lag, its where I'm @, Might be keeping still for now.

Not just regions, but whole device models !.......... P6810 & Verizon models left out in the cold
I'm over it. Samsung's track record indicates there won't be any 4.2.2 update for any model.
For those still procrastinating (don't mean you @xaadilhx, just move on and appreciate what users in our forum make with what we've got to work with.

Don't you find it funny that after 2 years from the 7.7 release. Apple came out with the mini which is a blatant ripoff of the 7.7.
And now they have the iPad Air which is just a bigger version of the 7.7. COPYCAT!
Exactly my feeling. Samsung should be brave and release a 7.7 2. But in the android update market Samsung sucks big time.

Your 7.7.2 already exists and is called Galaxy Tab pro 8.4 and the cost is about $400 or 386 € for the Wifi only model.
Actual size is slightly bigger than 7.7, so too big for me, so I'll wait after the Huawei Mediapad X1 which offers LTE for the same price as a 7" device.

No AMOLED on the Tab Pro makes it an imperfect replacement. If you want a LCD screen, you can think about the Tab Pro or the Xperia Z Ultra (called a phablet, but at 6.4 inches it's a very good small tablet)
Samsung Android V4.2.2 for GT-P6810?
Yep, and we are still waiting.
Any news on the V4.2.2 front ?

Hi All,
hope you all just fine, and rocking with your tabs.
I just want to share the news that samsung starts rolling Android 4.2.2 update for Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3100), with features from GS4 and so on.
I think we have the chance to get updated too, we much premuim software.
as for P6810, samsung might passed 4.1.2 to update you with 4.2.2 .. I know that all of you are pissed, but i think it's possible for you too.

ROM which is really stable

a ROM is not just root device and install it, actually putting a risk to 18k device the most extreme deadliest thing which is attached to our real life, Help us to get things done Quickly, we always asked for more n more that's how we live our life. XOLO company in starting i felt they doing well to make JB to KK but after new model (Hive) feels like he forgotten that his the most expensive handset is still running just KK and XOLO secure apps not running at all, feels like they making headset and making us fool, they making model no software. if you want more features buy new mobile it's not sim which can easily changeable. i still remember when updates come along, so happy when i have Samsung S2, HTC droid 2 and after this xolo even having normal rom from company had soo issue in software a lott bugs even email to XOLO DEV. but as usual they don't reply. collecting money and waiting for more time to stuck on my Q3k and then will buy GalaxyNote7. just rooted my Q3k this week
battery Quality more increased
can force close internal apps even uninstall them
little exposed app made theme like lollipop and changed home button , recent app drawer
if someone who knows the stable and tested ROM please write here and tell me about it
I'm aware of XDA from 3yrs., so much tech geek i'm. one thing i like in ANDROID if you buying a headset make sure that it has cyanogenmod or go to website and look out which device is support, I'm not making any fuss here, just telling and sharing my pov that what i learned from google in these years those person who love to get only updates and tweak in their phone go grab a phone who supports cyanogenmod. :good:
but it's damn right that they all making PHONE only spec updated but software i doubt ,
is it good time to buy a latest smartphone or it's never good time to buy a latest smartphone
note : project ARA might help us can't predict the future but let's see
