Have had my GSIII for about 2 months now and I'm wondering if something is wrong with my gps. I have taken my phone and compared it to 2 other GSIII's using the app GPS Status & Toolbox. On my phone when the app is opened it says 'Looking for GPS Location' and will quite often never find anything. Sometimes it will lock on however. If I'm outside it locks on quicker but indoors it does not. On the other phones I compare it against they both lock on almost immediately.
The other weird thing about my phone is the compass in the GPS Status app. Mine never sits still it is always bouncing back and forth. The other 2 phones I compare against the compass locks on and never moves unless I move the phone.
Now when it comes to navigation my phone seems to work decent. The only places it does not take me directly to are houses it is usually off by about a block, but businesses it is spot on. I figured the maps app just doesnt have the exact house locations?
I am running stock 4.1.2 on Verizon. After reading many threads about gps problems I have already tried tightening the 10 screws under the back cover of my phone. I also did the whole clear cache and remove Maps updates and reinstall. Would this be enough to call Verizon and try to get a different phone while its still under the year warranty?
I have the same problem. Mine worked great for a few months and suddenly became very unreliable. I can be driving down the freeway at 70MPH and navigation will suddenly freak out and think I'm on some other side street and start giving me directions to get back to the freeway. It will do this constantly and never shut up and it will even show me driving in totally different directions down streets that are blocks away from where I actually am.
I tried the screw thing and cleared the cache and reinstalled the Maps updates but that did not help. The problem has recently become even worse. Sometimes it takes 15+ minutes to get a GPS lock while in my car and in my house where it used to work perfectly it won't lock at all.
Another problem I've had, while I don't know if it's related, is that Google Maps flickers when scrolling and randomly goes blank. Along with that, it will randomly scroll out into the middle of the Atlantic when I'm just trying to zoom in on a particular location near me.
Have you tried a factory reset? That's probably the last thing I'm going to try before going to Verizon and requesting a replacement though I really don't want to go through the hassle of setting everything up again just to do it yet again if I have to replace the phone.
I have not tried a factory reset yet but I should probably give it a try. I posted this on another GS3 forum and a former Verizon support person recommended to not get a replacement from Verizon cause they send out real crappy ones they have laying around. He said to call Samsung and get the phone fixed that way so I will probably try that if the factory reset does not work.
have read where removing battery door and tightening the body screws has fixed most gps problems. It seems that the contacts are very susceptible to the body getting loose. Daily vibration can cause them to slightly loosen and thus the problem. I would give it a try, it only a few seconds work.

I just tried the screw thing again. I think there is definitely something to that. Sitting here at my desk I could not get a GPS lock at all. After tightening the screws I get a lock within 1-2 seconds. Maybe I should get some Loctite to keep them from backing off? I'll have to drive around to see if it's really working but this is what fixed it before. The only thing now is the strange flickering/graphical glitches that I see when in maps/navigation.

First off, I am almost positive this is a hardware problem and it very well may be a result of a fall the phone took. After I dropped it the speaker quit working. I actually retightened a screw on the upper left corner that had popped loose on the back of the phone and the speaker began working again, albeit with a bit of static. When I saw the screw had popped loose and there was a tiny bit of proken plastic with it I thought it would be unfixable but the screw went back into place which almost seems impossible but it worked.
Upon inspection it seems that the case screws and backplate function as an electrical connection themselves, which may or may not be related to my current problem.
Anyway, it resets when under certain types of heavy use. If I get on hulu for example in Skyfire it will reset within a few seconds of video. It also resets occasionally during a call, though not super frequently. Most telling is when it resets after 10-20 minutes of GPS use in Garmin XT. Upon resetting it will only last about 2-3 minutes of more GPS use before it resets again so it seems related to intense use and possibly heat buildup.
I suspect I am more or less screwed because any warranty request would be denied as soon as they realize it took a jolt but I just wanted to ask you guys if youve seen anything like this or perhaps had any suggestions I may not have considered
FYI this happens with multiple versions of NATF (4.7 now) but I strongly suspect this is not software related anyway.
. No ideas?
Wanted to get a read from folks as to what their Gut feel is. Are you confident that Sammy will really fix this? Any by fix, I mean the following. This comes from experiences with 2 HTC smartphones (Aria, and the Pure):
1. GPS locks in under 5 seconds in clear sky conditions
2. Usable navigation; IOW, 30-50m accuracy, again under ideal conditions.
3. Usable navigation such that it stays locked while driving at highway speeds.

I have not experienced any of the above issues (post update) except for the 5 second lock, and even my garmin can't do that. The cog2.2 had my gps jacked up so I reverted back and it works great again.

I did My Tracks for the first time today and was surprised by the results - highway for 15 miles, 15 miles off (obtained the lock at highway speeds as well) But it lost me in this one dead area about a mile from my house - I drop most calls through this one area as well too.. must be a whole in the ozone
However! (Always a however, right?) Tonight while walking the dog around the neighborhood, the phone could see up to 12 satellites.. yet it didn't get a lock for over 5 minutes. <--- This is the biggest problem I have with the GPS on this phone. INCONSISTENT AS HELL.
What causes the inconsistency?? So since I've owned the phone (release day) and it's been this long and inconsistent from the beginning, I am beginning to lose my confidence in a real fix (at least Samsung can make some kind of formal announcement you know?)

I ordered my Captivate from AT&T's online store. GPS did not work, no matter what kind of settings I played with (lbstestmode, etc.). Got the update, no help. Took it back to the AT&T store and replaced it. Got the update and it works fantastically. If yours is still in the 30 day warranty period get it switched out.
Considering that many people had the gps issue fixed with the ota update or with the newly released froyo, yet many still have problems, I think there are some bad phones. I'll try to get mine replaced even though it's outside the 30 days.

I'm on my second Captivate. I have no faith that GPS will be reliable enough to use for navigation purposes or apps like My Tracks or even Layar. The OTA update definitely helped, but turns and changes in direction throw it off by quite a bit.
About all it is good for is telling your weather app what city you are in.
For me, the GPS didn't work from the first day I bought the phone. It got a lot better after the OTA update. However, it's getting mess up again in the last few days. I've heard other people from this forum said the GPS will go bad after a few weeks, I guess that's happening to me now. Moreover, the lag seems to be getting worse too.
I'm running Cognition 2.2 FroYo and for the first time ever I got 11/11 sattelites locked. My ride home it stayed more or less dead on the street i was on, occassionally wavered onto the sidewalk a bit or whatnot in My Tracks. That's using the stock settings (spirent-lcs.com and Standalone, with Use Wireless Networks off). If this does not degrade over time, I'd call it fixed for sure.

Keep it coming folks; seems like for the most part people's gut feel is about in line with mine. Im going to return my Captivate to Amazon and have them replace it to see if I can see any improvement. Not holding my breath though.

Mine has always worked on both of captivates. It's in no way perfect but it gets the job done.
I just ordered a replacement Captivate from Amazon. I will then update the software to JH7 in the un-mollested state to see what kind of improvements I see, if any.
Crossed fingers............Bottom line, im not too confident.
So I got my replacement Captivate from Amazon. The second I got it, I stepped outside to see if I can get a GPS lock. I stood there for 5 minute, and no lock.
So I did the software update; which worked. It didnt work on my "molested" captivate.
I then went outside for a drive. Locked very quickly I think 5 seconds. Accuracy was very good; certainly on par with the two HTC smart phones Ive owned.
Maybe its dumb luck that I got a good unit; but it seems not overly molesting your captivate is a good idea until people really understand the consequences.
EDIT: The above drive I mentioned was in neighborhood roads, at relatively low speeds. On my way to work it was definitely NOT as accurate as my HTC Pure. It showed me about 1 exit behind; was about a half or three quarters of a mile.
I just want to say that I called Samsung support directly yesterday and the guy told me that "he hasn't heard anyone else who's applied the JH7 update that said their GPS wasn't fixed."
SO CALL SAMSUNG SUPPORT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Don't stop calling. They need to know the update didn't fix it!

They already know. I can guarantee you that some of their dev team consistently troll these forums.
My GPS works pretty well, especially considering its a phone, since JH7 OTA update.
The problem you're talking about with locks under 5 seconds, isnt always going to happen. It depends on how long its been since the last time gps was used, and how close you are currently to where you last used it.
If you use it and then turn it off, and in a few hours turn it back on, at roughly the last location it was used, it'll get a very quick lock. If you wait days, it wont. If you use it at location A last, then are long ways away from that location when turning it back on, it wont get a quick lock, it has to calculate where its at based on new data from the satellites. Thats the nature of the beast with GPS. My Garmin in my car is the exact same way. If it has to do a cold start it sometimes takes up to 2 mins to get a lock. But once its got it, if I go in a store for a few mins and come right back out, it picks up location almost immediately.
Since JH7 I'd say my GPS performance more than meets my expectations for a mobile phone GPS.

Yeah, I'm with you here.
When it came to the HTC video driver fiasco on many of their phones it was sickening that HTC wouldn't do anything about it, or even tackle the issue on future releases. But at least slower video performance than the hardware was capable of wasn't really a deal breaker when it was still working good. So I could understand why a company wouldn't invest a ton to fix it for already purchased phones.
This however is outright broken. It's not a phone with good video performance that COULD perform better with an update. It's a phone with a broken technology that can hopefully be FIXED with an update.
I don't know how Samsung will avoid lawsuits etc etc by manufacturing a blatantly broken piece of technology unless they can rectify the situation... quickly. I think their window is slowly closing on this type of scenario.
As for myself, the GPS problem just isn't an issue since I don't use the GPS anyhow. So I'm not a consumer frothing at the mouth, but the idea that I spent money on a fancy, but broken, phone leaves a bitter taste in that unfrothy mouth of mine.
I'm very confident. I put the leaked froyo from designgears on one of my phones and the lock was fast, and gps accurate. Drove from Chicago to Kohler, WI the other day (~130 miles) and ran gps on the phone along with my dedicated gps unit to check accuracy. Had no issues at all.
I think once 2.2 is released, all of the gps issues will be resolved if the leaked version is any indication.
I'm guessing it's the sum of several issues causing problems.
1. Basic hardware configuration that results in worse signal-to-noise than other handsets.
2. Non-optimized settings that sporadically contribute to slow or poor locks
3. Some kind of software buffering or other issues that cause freeze-ups where the position doesn't update.
When my phone is working well I don't experience problems 2 and 3, and I can live with problem 1. When that's the case I get consistent tracking 95% of my trip. Sometime 2 and 3 seem to creep into the picture for no apparent reason. I hope and expect they will get those problems solved.
So I came across this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101066) thread in the DHD forum the other day, and had mixed feelings about it. In theory it makes sense, but in practice it seems kind of scary. Anyway, I've had GPS issues on and off since I got my Inspire, sometimes it would work excellent, sometimes it would kind of work, sometimes it wouldn't work at all. I've tried every software solution I could think of (new radios, gps script, reinstalling locations, wiping EFS partition, etc), and I figured my problem had to be hardware, but I'd never seen a hardware solution offered until I came across this thread. First off I would like to say that I have not tried this fix yet, however I'm inclined to and here's why:
After reading this, I started thinking, "OK, so it's just not getting good enough pressure on the GPS antennae contacts, wonder what would happen if I tried to apply manual pressure?" So I launched GPS Test and watched it find 2 or 3 satellites, but didn't lock after about a minute. So I applied pressure to the battery flash/GPS cover, 1 finger on the top of it 1 finger on the bottom, making sure not to cover the hole. What happened? Immediately it found 9 satellites and locked to 20ft, showing better connections to the satellites than i've EVER seen. I let off the pressure and watched as the signal strength to these satellites dropped intensely, went back to 2 or 3 satellites, and lost the lock. I again applied pressure, got a bunch of satellites back and got an immediate lock.
Before I go about taking my phone apart and trying to fix these contacts from the inside, I wanted to see if applying pressure on the back flash/GPS cover improved anything for anybody else, or if it's just my imagination. Please report back
I havn't had any problems with my gps, but if the problem you are having is what I was having I would be cracking the phone open to fix it...

My GPS works, but there's some disconnect between Navigation and the GPS, I sware. If I run Navigation by itself, then I lose signal 2-3 minutes after getting a lock. If I run My Tracks in the background, then it stays locked.

Um, I just tried applying pressure and got 8 meter lock on inside my house. My GPS usually NEVER locks on, even outside in clear skies. Wtf.
Edit: And now it's working all the time. I love you.
It didn't hurt to apply pressure to the area where you said the gps contacts are. So I opened up gps status in my home. Let it try and find some satellites on its own. Nothing was happening for a few seconds. Then I applied pressure to where the flash is on our phones one finger above the flash and the other below the flash. It then fixes satellites on my phone. And when I let go the fixed satellites dropped and my radius grew. I tried applying again and then it went back and started to drop. So I let go and it went up so I think the contacts are contacting and now I'm just covering up the gps but it seems to work. So now when I want to use gps ill remember this trick.

I pried out the flash cover and noticed that the antenna contacts on the cover were oxidized except for the part where the corner of the spring contacts landed. I scraped away the oxidation with a sharp object and bent the spring contacts up a little bit to make a firmer connection and I immediately got a boost in GPS reception. I dont' know what metal makes up the antenna in the flash cover but it sounds like oxidation builds back up again after a couple of months. I'll keep an eye on it and post an update.
This is perfect! I just did it, took about ten minutes. After reboot I just locked to under 60ft indoors during Hurricane Irene.

Christ..I dont believe this.. I always have problems with Google Navigation getting satellite lock..and maps is usually like 1500-1600ft +or-... I did the pressure on the spots above and below the flash like you guys said... all of a sudden..boom! GPS lock inside my house..(never happens) and 9 satellites locked..(most I ever saw was 5 before when I was outside in a clear area.)..the GPS nav icon is almost on my house roof!
This issue puts it in perspective how bad the quality is on this device.

I have actually noticed the same issues as you were describing. I have pushed on the back and waited and then found the signal got better. Then released the pressure and it got either worse or just stayed the same. Different results every now and then. I have also taken it apart and tried the DHD fixed that your describing and it worked excellent for a little bit then nothing. I'm returning it now to have HTC fix it. Probably the easiest way. Sucks not having a phone but at least they will give me a phone that does everything its supposed to. They were really nice about it too.

This is a great thread. I fortunately do not have the issue on my device to where I need to mess with it, but experience tells me living in a somewhat temperate / rainly climate the contacts may oxidize / signal degrades over time. Good to know how to address it...I had an iPhone 3G I took apart at the end of its life. I had noticed the GPS was really sucking toward the end. Sure enough, plain old brown rust was evident on the GPS antenna contacts...
****, I wish I had known about this before I exchanged my Inspire at my AT&T store. I couldn't get GPS lock at all. It was a hassle, and I had all but narrowed it down to hardware, so this really makes sense.

I have an inspire running coredroid v8.1 and I cannot get a gps lock at all, even if I let it sit outside for 10 minutes...
I have reflashed the rom several times, and even tried the newest versions of virtuosity and cm
I have followed the video to pull the phone apart and I'm positive the gold pins are making connection
I have tried angel death's patch
I have ran gps status and cleared and re-downloaded in a-gps settings, ran gps test, and ran faster fix
I have tried the trick where you pull the sim out and get a lock (I still get no lock even with no sim)
I've looked everywhere and tried to do all the research before posting a new thread, but I just can't find anything else and I don't know what my problem is...
any insight would be greatly appreciated
EDIT: Also thought I should include that I have flashed radios 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M, 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2, and 12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19_M with none making a difference
Sorry to tell you but you might just have a bad thing piece of harware. I started a thread a little while ago called "GPS Last Resort". I tried everything... And I mean Everything! I was told that there were "known" hardware issues with the Inspire. So I un-rooted and returned to a "stock" state and went through the PITA process of getting a replacement.
Once I got my replacement, it was a night and day difference. My new one locks in less than 15 seconds with 5-4 meters accuracy.
Don't drive yourself crazy. If it is still under warranty, get it replaced.

did your phone have any other signs of being defective or was it just the gps? I mean, the phone is great except for this! No boot loops, force closes, glitches, or anything...
Also, if it's just the antenna, could I buy an inspire with like a broke screen or something off ebay and just switch them out? Do you think that's a viable option?

You may not even need to replace the antenna at all. When you pop off the cover for the LED camera flash (this is also your gps antenna) there are two little spring like clips that are the contacts for the antenna. If those contacts are not making a good connection - your phone will just keep searching for signal. If you are brave enough - you can pop out the antenna and carefully bend out those contact clips in order to make a better connection.
I was hesitant to do this myself - and sense the phone was still under warranty, I got a replacement.
Sorry again for the delay - hope that helps if you have not already found an answer.

I decided I'd go ahead and pop off the camera cover to readjust my gps antennae contacts and ended up breaking the cover. ~2cm crack just under the flash, which raises up the cover enough that the contacts won't make contact at all unless I'm applying pressure that only Thor could exert on the cover.
side note - 2 weeks after I did this my screen shattered.
Haven't been having much luck lately..

I did the warranty after trying to remove the gps antenna because it still didnt work after i did that. The sent it back working !!!

I started with a Galaxy SIII [Verizon] on JellyBam [the most recent version before kitkat] I had GPS working just fine, there were some bugs and I saw a KitKat version came out so I figured I'd give it a try, ever since then regardless of what ROM I run I can't seem to lock on to GPS.
I tried CM11 and still to no avail, I get GPS through my location and google maps and such so I am able to get step by step directions but no turn by turn navigation, sometimes I just float along roads as if it knows where I am but it can't 100% lock on. Since then I've done everything short of an ODIN flash because that is such a hassle..
I've tried CM11 nothing on the GPS location end.
I tried LiquidSmooth still couldn't grab a GPS signal
Any JellyBam even RC2 still no GPS lockon.
Anyone got a proposed fix, I even grabbed GPS Status and cleared my A-GPS data, and also tried those work arounds like turning your phone on with location already enabled before the restart etc etc. I just can't get GPS to work. I'm wondering if I'm going to have to ODIN and if somewhere along the line a tweak changed something
Also Question 2 - Do system tweaks like AndroidTweaker and such stay after a full rom reload..
Example; On Jellybam use android tweaker to optimize battery life play with GPS on android tweaker
then I format my phone to another rom [cm11] do those tweaks stil stay there until I ODIN or something?

Try taking the back cover off and screwing tight all the screws. (sounds mad but it actually works, there's a whole thread about this)

Okay, I will try that. I think its a software issue though, but I will certainly give it a whirl.

Did you REALLY tighten them? What I mean by that is get yourself a good quality small phillips head screwdriver, not a flat head. Turn those screws on the back with a good screwdriver, they're probably loose. I've had the exact same problem twice and both times this worked like a charm. I also did it for a friend of mine, same result. It's worth the $5 investment. I got a "teeny turner" at my local computer store, worked like a charm.

I'll be honest I actually didn't tighten them that hard.. I am going to give it a good twist tonight and see what happens because I have started to grab a signal since I did the original turn. But when I did the turn I Also pulled the SIM card and the SD card and the battery for over 60 seconds, I am wondering if that potentially aided inf ixing it as well.

The first time I thought I tightened them it had no effect. Then I got the correct screwdriver and really tightened them, as in they turned at least 180 degrees each and pretty easily with the correct driver. My GPS will lock from the middle of a highrise in Chicago and get 11 satellites. Prior to that I needed to be near a window and pray that it would find 3. Trust the experience of hundreds of others, get yourself the right screwdriver and try it again. Don't use a cheap screwdriver or flat head, you'll just strip the screws. Get a small phillips, shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.
