mkv video playback lags - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi, all. I own xperia Neo V, recently rooted. I use MX player for video playback. There seems to be a lag at random intervals during video playback, especially playing mkv files. During the lag, audio continues to play while video displays as a still picture and then delayed video gets played back at a very fast pace. Then video playback continues fine and then lags with similar issue at another random interval. The lag happens for 5-8 seconds . I would like to know if any workaround for this problem? Does anyone face similar issue?

Hi! What is the resolution of the video? Because the Neo and Neo V screen resolution is only 720p and it won"t play full hd videos, but 720p videos is working well. I have Xperia Neo and it's not playing the full hd vids with any player! The sound goes as it should, bat the screen freezes. Reduce the video size and it will work...

The resolution is 576*432
I tried BSplayer, QQplayer too. all lag at random intervals

I use Moboplayer (the one with a "green triangle on a grey circle" icon), and it plays everything, except full hd vids. The max reslution is 1280x720, but even Quickpic plays too. So i dunno what the problem is... What rom are you using and kernel? Maybe you run out of free memory during playback... Have you download the codec for MX player? When I first install it, it's need the MX Player Kodek (ARMv7 NEON)...
But now I probe one video (1280x720) and Quickpic plays it, I'm able to scrolling too...

I tried Mobo before. One thing that I love about MX is that it's HW acceleration feature is excellent which boost your volume twice, and all other players including Mobo can't match this boost. That's the only reason stopping me to use other apps. Anyways, thanks for hinting Moboplayer, will try it out again. Regarding Quikcpic, I use it only to view my pictures, new used it to play any video.

Poor hardware video decoding on Tab

I picked up the Tab yesterday after selling my Archos 70. To be honest the video processing onthe tab is poor. Speed wise iits great but the hardware decoder seems to not process the video correctly. This is apparent on 720p content, the image seems to be pixelated or downscaled very poorly, resulting in jagged image quality. It seems that lower resolution files such as 480p does not suffer from this problem. I have tried mp4 and mkv 720p files and the problem is still very noticable. After trying rockplayer xyplayer and a host of others i noticed that the image is far sharper under software decoding ( but too slow to be usable) , one hardware decoding is enabled the image becomes blocky.
To be honest the main reason for buying the tab was for the playback of 720p content on a good quality screen. ( archos 70 screen has poor contrast and viewing angles) , has anyone else noticed this poor hardware decoder issue? and is there any way around it? , I am running the latest firmware and feeling a bit dissapointed, my galaxy S has no such decoding issues.
Poor? It plays perfectly my test file, a 1080p trailer for the last Indiana Jones... And that beast reaches a bitrate of even 50mbps!

I have noticed the same thing.
Whit 720p movies the Tab do some thing to the image. Pixelated/downscale weird frames sometimes. When just watch on the Tab screen i dont noticed its so much. But when i connect it to the hdmi dock and run the move on big screen its gets really noticeable.
And its like you say, on low res movies its looks good like youtube or other movies.
But whit 720p its looks weird some time whit lost frames or what you can call it.
Can't explain it whit my poor English.
The Tab play all my movies just fine. No lagg or so. Its just like the above described. Its seems it have problems to decode or handle the image the way it should look like.
And i use the stock Samsung player.
Think the Tab has same problem when you look at pictures in the gallery. Its downscale/mess up the image. Have read about that here on Xda

It doesn't happened to me when I play with Samsung Video 720 & 1080p.
I don't trust RockPlayer.
FYI.
No issues here either, 1080P and 720P all played fine... best file format seems to be XviD..

I agree. The Tab plays my ripped blu-ray movies beautifully. I keep resolution at 1080 too. No lag or picture quality issues.

I use the the standard video player and it works fine, rockplayer lagged and put movies out of sync for me
Use stock player instead, never really trust rockplayer
cannot play any 720p mkv at all. Stock/Rock player. I can play 720p MP4, but audio does not work : (
no problems using 720p movies with standard video player

I think your problem is that there is DTS / Multi channel audio in your movies.
The Galaxy Tab can't play Movies whit 5.1 audio. It haves to be stereo sound or it won't play.
It's kind of sucks, because almost every 720p movie haves multi channel audio that SGT can't handle.
Little annoying that movies have to be converted only for the audio.
What i do is that i convert my movies whit Formatfactory.

[Q] Video playback

Hey guys,
Trying to setup my GFs phone with some media to watch while at the gym, and I can get everything on there fine and use different players to watch it, but I noticed no matter the player there's a significant frame drop/stuttering in the playback, especially when compared to my S2.
Anybody else notice any choppiness when playing back media? Only tested with divx TV shows downloaded from the web (playback from phones camera seems to be fine.)
Thoughts?
Hrmmm. Not sure. I use MX video player for playback and have been happy. This is mostly for flash video and camcorder on phone, but I haven't tried any divx. For the most part everything is fairly smooth.

I use handbrake to knock mine down to the proper size and have zero issues, I also use mine on the treadmill. Beats the heck out of the TV. I use realplayer
I use mx video player too. It works great but sometimes the video freezes and you have to hit back and select the video again. But that's only on software decoding.
If you convert the video to MPEG you can use h/w decoding which fixes that and seems to make the battery last longer.

MoboPlayer works great for me.
Mx player is great, set to sw fast decode and it run very smooth. It support subtitle, interface is nice and easy to use.

Timeshift playing problem

Hey guys,
the problem is, when I record a timeshift video, windows mediaplayer and vlc mediaplayer have difficulties to play the movie.
In normal sequence the video stutters but the slomo sequence is fine.
Besides sonys movieplayer also stutters playing timeshift movie! Only video hd app plays it quite perfect.
It's pretty frustrating watching timeshift videos on pc.
Sony support said i should try to transfer video via pc companion instead of copy and paste via mtp mode...
1080p 30 and 60 fps looking great on windows mediaplayer.
Does anybody have another solution?
Stuttering on Sony Z3 Compact in time shift video app output
I also experience stuttering in the result of the time shift video app when combining both normal speed and slow speed.
If all of the video is slow-motion there is no stuttering
If all of the video is normal speed there is no stuttering
If first part of video is normal speed and last part is slowmotion there is no stuttering
But if first part is slowmotion and middle part is normal speed and last part is slowmotion then there will be 1-2 seconds of stuttering between first and middle part.
As if fading from slowmotion part to normal speed part of the video does have a bug in the app that will result in stuttering in result video during the fade.
The stuttering can be seen when playing it on the phone after the video has been rendered. It is also stuttering when playing it in Windows Mediaplayer - but here there will also be mosaic and MPEG artifact during the stuttering.
It seems like there is a problem in Sony time shift video app during the rendering of the slowmotion to normal speed fading in the result video.
I thou noticed that when coping it to Google drive it will be converted and present in a YouTube player and it seems like that conversion removes the stuttering (Google somehow fixes the problem during the conversion)
Sony would you please fix that stuttering problem in the timeshift video app for Sony Z3 Compact so the rendered timeshift video does not consist stuttering when combining both normal and slowmotion?
Best regards,
Thomas

stream stopped when pause or screen off?

Hi,
I love this app , reacently using MX player streams in apps like movie HD , showbox , cinema box, mega box etc but i noticed when i pause or screen off while waching live movie stream , Buffering stopped automatically but when i play then buffering starts i need this player to never stop buffer so that the movie play smooth just like in youtube app when you play or stop it always buffering so that we could easily watch movie without stop . Kindly reply if this matter solve
Bump
I have the same issue. Statement above, is clear. When streaming, if you press pause, MX PLAYER will try to Load; Stop; and End Playback.
Version 1.9.10(ARMv7 neon)
Running on Firestick (version 2, 4 gigs available)
mx player, Standard config.
Mp4 file ~500MB 720p max.(can be smaller or much larger makes no difference)
having trouble making a bug report because it is on a Firestick, however I did not always have this problem. Any help to point me and others in the right direction would be greatly appreciated, please.

Skip forward/backward function acts weird on my device.

I have a 2015 model of sony bravia android tv, and it has a MT5890 CPU and a mali T-624 GPU. I installed the latest version of mx player and armv7 neon codec.
I am able to play x265 coded videos with built-in video player without any problem, it's very smooth, and I can skip forward or backward or just jump to whenever I wish to.
However when using mx player, it's also very smooth, but I can only play from the beginning, if I try to skip forward or backward, or jump to a certain time point, it starts to act very weird. Sometimes video speeds up 2x or 3x, sometimes it slows down, like it's catching up or slowing down to wait audio to be synchronized. And it can take from couple of minutes to half an hour to go back to normal.
This only applies to x265 coded videos, I have other video that are coded with x264 or HEVC, and they work just fine in both built-in player and mx player.
I have tried other video players like spmc, kodi or VLC, they all stutter, VLC is probably the best among these but it is still dropping frames left and right. But most of them don't have problem with skipping or jumping.
Can someone please explain the reason? Could it be fixed?
Much appreciated!

Basically, x265 is an encoder for HEVC. So, both are same.
Maybe some particular HEVC profile has issues. Can you try HW+ decoder?

In fact I am using HW+ decoder, and it's the only way I can play those videos smoothly. Switching to HW or SW would make the video either completely unplayable or stutter very heavily.
To sum it up, I CAN play any videos with built-in player smoothly and drag or jump or skip however I want to.
I CAN play x265 coded files smoothly with mx player in HW+ mode, but I CANNOT jump or skip. I CAN play any other videos with mx player without any problem.
I CAN play x265 coded files with some level of stutter with other players like spmc and VLC, but I CAN drag or jump however I want to.
The videos that I am having problem with have these kind of parameters:
Format : HEVC
Format Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Format profile : Main [email protected]@High
Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC
Writing library : x265 2.5+4-b4a5bcfe29c7:[Windows][GCC 4.9.3][64 bit] 10bit
If the writing library is x264 or ATEME Titan KFE or ATEME Titan file, or if the codec ID is hev1, or if the format profile is Main [email protected]@Main, I don't have a problem.
This is so weird....
To the TC - Did you ever get this sorted?
I am having the same issue on my Sony Bravia. Whilst the actual player is exactly what I wanted, I get exactly the same issue when fast forwarding or rewinding.
I have played around with the different codec settings but it doesn't seem to make any differences.
Did you end up finding a solution?
Cheers

Glad to see that I am not alone. But unfortunately I did not find any solution and had given up on this.
After all, it is only a tiny fraction of all the videos have this kind of behavior.
Thank you for the confirmation
