So, im trying to root my new Thunderbolt so i can make it verMYzon.
Anyways, cheesy things aside, while using the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616 it says "Note, ADB required."
What really does that mean and where can i get it for my Windows 7 / Thunderbolt combo?
The only root method i know is the ancient forms of one click with original cm and a G1

root is another story what device do you own? adb can indeed remove bloatware but your device need to be rooted to work

Im using the Thunderbolt. I got it rooted last night, but due to a defective unit or something, my phone wouldn't accept my transferred number from Tmobile to Verizon. I now have a new phone and will not be rerooting. Maybe i did something wrong? kept saying "phone could not be authenticated at this time..." when i tried calling someone.
But also, all md5 sums were correct. I just wanna get rid of these stupid games i wont use, and maybe a cool looking rom. but my top priority is CHANGE THIS STUPID PERSONALIZE BUTTON to something useful...Like quick access to camera.
Actually...if someone could help me just change it to a quick access to camera INSTEAD of "personalize" using the stock rom, that would be great...

You might want to brew yourself a cup of coffee -- or an ocean for that matter. You see, the Thunderbolt comes with a signature check to make sure that you are running HTC's key. So custom ROMs might take awhile
I could be, of course, saying this like an idiot; I haven't read my feeds in the past week and I'm too exhausted to check. It's a possibility that this has changed. I will delete my post if someone proves me right.
You know, i liked your response. I understand what youre getting at, but i mean, if there is a mod i can attach to the STOCK rom just to repurpose the personalize button, i'd love to try testing it.
Plus...I might have a lead on the sig check key...if anyone looks closely...its surprisingly similar to one we've seen before of a terribad phone...but due to an issue, i need to reinstall a "better" SDK or something to help test since my new laptop don't like linux

Try going to Settings > Applications > Quick Launch you might find something there
I dont see quick launch under Applications...
Settings>Applications>"Unknown Sources, Manage Applications, Running Services, Development, Fast Boot"
As everyone probably has seen the notifaction bar access in ICS is a nice new feature. However, I am pretty sure it would be possible to also make this possible with Cyanogen Mod, there has been a request already, but it was "closed" due to insufficient stars with a given period. I think it would be nice to go ahead and star this issue as much as possible to get this feature in CM 7.x

This is a bad idea. I see alot of security risks with this and I hope google fixes it. Nothing should be able to be accessed while the screen is locked.

Wouldn't a simple feature on-off toggle fix everything? Let people choose if they prefer security and privacy or ease of use I guess. I have a business phone and a personal phone..with no real "personal" data, so I wouldn't mind being able to quickly access notifications when the phone is locked.

As long as there is a way to shut it off then I wouldnt mind it.
You can already do this using widgetlocker. It is a convenience as well as potential privacy risk.

I am pretty sure you will still have to entern your unlock pattern/code when you open a notification.

You can't access it if you have any type of lock on your phone. So if you have pattern set up you won't be able to pull it down. So thats your fix. If security is your priority then you already have a pattern lock or pin set up right?

I bought a Samsung Infuse 4G from Wal-Mart a couple weeks ago. There's an annoying Facebook pop-up that keeps coming up asking me to accept their terms of agreement but I do not use any Facebook apps. I went into manage applications and saw a facebook app that I did not uninstall. The only extra apps I have installed on my phone were skype, tango, vibrer and two voice recording apps that sucked so bad I uninstalled them.
I am not new to any kind of coding, just new to android. I am on a limited time schedule because I have work at noon and it's already 9:28AM. I would like to get my phone rooted before I start that's why I'm offering to paypal for help since I won't be able to read all these guides in time. I am using a Windows 7 64-Bit PC. Keep your $$$, it would be a great learning experiance for you XDA is not about making $$$ or looking for a fast fix.... is for someone who wants to learn and make their growth in the learning process....but it may take more time...

Thanks, yes, I know about Cyanogen.
Oh you mean GingerBread from Google? This is exactly what I don't want. I want to separate from Google, coz we all know about NSA case. So I thought, there will be some developers, who will try to build some custom ROM and try to eliminate "Big brother" and focus mainly on security.
Omnirom is supposed to be security and privacy consious.

Well I'd suggest the cyanogenmod, but without the google apps. They're optional.
In the nexus 4 section there is an aokp that is patched so built in Google analytics are gone. There is a patch that can be applied to other ROMs.
Custom roms, including Cyanogenmod, have a history of BAD security. Many rom developers end up introducing new vulnerabilities. In the past, some hardened Android builds existed, but I know of no current hardened roms.
I personally would stay away from custom roms, and stick to as close to AOSP as possible, signed with your own private keys. (and no Omnirom, AOKP, Cyanogenmod are NOT AOSP in any way shape or form.)

There are some really exciting Android security projects out there... For instance, one awesome function a-la-Truecrypt involves full disk encryption with plausible deniability. You are able to give out a first-layer passphrase if you are coerced - yet a truly private volume remains secure and disguised within the apparent unused portion of the storage disk.
Yet it's unlikely that any of this is relevant to you, otherwise you wouldn't be asking this sort of thing. When it comes to security leaks, try to barricade off the paths of least resistance from the ground up. For instance, even all of that wouldn't do much good if you had forensic evidence of your phone config on your computer, a lockscreen that could be bypassed, a phone seized whilst still turned with encryptions keys remaining in RAM, etc. Also keep in mind all of the data you are sending out in the clear via your cloud storage, SMS/IM, WiFi, etc.
So in the end, just pick a ROM that runs smoothly and you enjoy. Whatever you end up deciding, make absolutely certain to:
- encrypt with strong passphrase (then use cryptfs app to create a shorter lock screen key)
- disable USB debugging

This probably isn't exactly spot on, but here's a rough sysnopsis... When a ROM is built from source, the creator "signs" their creation (i.e. the ROM and the apps within). This way you can be sure that you're indeed getting an official ROM built by AOKP (or whomever) and not by some malicious 3rd party. Likewise, the Android OS uses signatures to ID which files are legitimate and given permission to run (i.e. official updates). However, there have been incidents with custom ROMs when this functionality has been exploited. This could allow an otherwise innocuous seeming app to deploy hidden malware and cloak itself as a legitimate app, gaining full rights to the phone.
A self-built ROM with your own private key is presumably safer against such an attack. I don't think most people would need to be concerned about this, but still something to keep in mind. Unfortunately jcase is spot on about custom ROMs almost always creating or exposing more vulnerabilities than stock. For instance, features like ADB or USB-OTG are often enabled by default. If that wasn't bad enough, in the event that your phone is ever lost/stolen/seized, having a custom recovery installed is pretty much handing over your identity with a bow wrapped on top. It makes it easy for anyone to bypass PIN/password/face/gesture-lock or dump off the entire disk image. Not to mention analysis can reveal your account passwords, WiFi keys, SMS, phone records, photos. Most of these vulnerabilities can be safeguarded against with careful consideration, but you certainly won't get there by default.

The only way to eliminate the ability of a nation-state interfering in your data would be to not generate any. If they're watching you, then stopping them from watching you isn't going to be possible. So it's better to ensure that when they watch you appear innocent.
Granted, I'm not saying you shouldn't take any precautions. But to truly get away from their snooping you're probably better of without a phone.

I still wonder if AOSP or any of the bigger custom ROMs without Gapps is truly Google free. I have been browsing the forums for a while on that question but cant really find a good answer. Google free meaning: it doesn't communicate in any way on any moment with Google.
Anyone who can verify that? Has there ever been a XDA'er who researched this? For some it seems an assumption and some think since Android is developed by Google they surely try to analyze even AOSP roms or derivatives.

It only sends version statistics to Google, and there's a build.prop setting that allegedly disables it (ro.config.nocheckin=1) -- haven't tried it because I'd rather show my pride in Gingerbread

What and where is this patch?
I would think you could block all of Google's ip address's in your host file on any rom also.
You could edit the host file before flashing it.
Now that we've got some Sunshine in our lives, sadly (not really) it is time for Turboid to be retired. We don't need it anymore.
If you would like to set up a rom on your unlocked Turbo that has all the features that Turboid had, upgrade to SU4TL-44, unlock with Sunshine, install TWRP, and flash following:
1. SuperSU: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
2. Busybox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...-busybox-v1-23-2-stericson-flashable-t3114476 (NOTE: This is not the latest version, but you need to have busybox flashed before you flash Pon-3. There's a SU3TL-39 full firmware? My images were based on the SU3TL-38 and updated to SU3TL-39 by emulating the OTA script.
(Also, HDR works on my images, for whatever it's worth)

Yep! You can get it on the motofirmwares website. Yeah, someone confirmed for me the other day that it works on your image now. In the past, I had flashed it and it didn't, but you've updated it since I did that. So I guess HDR working isn't really a feature anymore. I'm working on some gimmicks to make my image a little more relevant though.
Would it be possible for you to allow us to claim space to the area where the Google Search Bar is, when it is hidden? Also, I would like to be able to clear all the open applications without having to swipe them all one at a time. Is that possible?

I'll look into the Google search bar thing. I've never seen my screen without it, so I didn't know that the space wasn't automatically used. As for the clear all recents thing, that is one of the many features of Gravity Box for LP (a well known xposed module). Try that. I'll see if there's a way to bake it into the rom too.
I posted on the other thread about this, but I will say again here, this img is great. Has similar battery life to the other Lp img I was running, despite not having tweaks. I unplugged at 530 am. been kicking butt all day long. I streamed via Bluetooth for 2 hours driving at work, and noticed better 4g signals than I have had yet at my work using this img. There were zero glitches or bugs that I noticed. I am still at 8% battery, atm. I had a crapload of SOT. Look for yourself. amazing img. thank you!!!
p.s. I just noticed I have had max brightness all day as well. lol.
I just realized you removed the corporate email app (after a day or use, haha). Is there a way that I can side load it or something? I love the debloated ROM, but that is one app I need for my college email account.
Also, is it ok to update Moto Actions? You can understand why I ask that!
^^^ I used the Outlook app as a replacement today. Gmail also will allow you to add other email accounts now, so that may be why. As far as requests, my only one may not be reasonable or practical, but it would be a deodexed version of this. Again, awesome work.
Yeah, specifically, I need the exchange piece. I tried the outlook app, but it doesn't handle certain things as well. I also tried installing Google Email 6.5 as well as the Exchange Services apk, but I know I have to be missing something... Actually, probably lots of things! haha.
Also, adaway doesn't work with this build, is that right?

Well if you need the stock email app, I can send an image your way that has it once I find some time. I have no idea what deodexing roms entails, but that sounds like a fun project too. I'll look into it.

Haha yes, updating seems to not cause the apocalypse to occur this time around. I'll make an image that has the stock email app intact, or I'll try sideloading it and post the apk if it works.

I added the stock email app back. Side loading didn't work. Will be up in a few hours.
thats cool. honestly, deodexing is removing all of the .odex files from the rom. (located at /system/app , system/priv-app, etc.
the reason i ask about it is it would make theming easier. mind you, without system r/w access, it is a moot point. it may make the theme options available work better though. (LPthemer module comes to mind). CF has said he will not be doing that at any point, so it may be a PITA.
