Which phone is worth getting? (First Android Phone) - General Topics

Hello XDA ,
So I would like to know from your guys. I own a Samsung Star now and I want to get a new phone. This means my first ever Android phone that I will own (I have used Android before, but those where phones from friends). My question is which phone is the best pick to get.
ill use it mainly for apps (mainly games), whats-app, some internet when on wi-fi.
I personally was thinking about the Nexus 4 which is been sold for €450 here in the Netherlands. But what do you guys think? I would love to have Jelly Bean and a fast phone.
Go ahead and suggest me something but keep it under the Nexus 4 or at the same price as the Nexus 4.
#Robert

Go with the nexus 4. I have it and it's definitely the best in the price range. It's so good in fact I've been thinking about selling my old phones to buy a nexus 4.

100% agree!
If I'd buy a new android phone (I'm sure it would be an android phone ) I would buy a nexus, too.
You'll get OS updates really fast and for quite a long time and you'll have a slim rom without bloatware.
Hope I could help!

Nexus 4 is an excellent choice.

Wait for the S4 or go with Note 2. The S3 is now a lot cheaper with the Note 2 out and the S4 being announced.

You are a perfect candidate for a nexus 4 Key lime pie will be out in a few months and you can bet the N4 will have it first.
If you know someone in the US, have them buy it for you. Much cheaper!

The Nexus 4 is a great phone, but the two big things it lacks are an external SD card and removable battery.
Think about how you'll use the phone and if those things might be useful to you. I keep a lot of music on my external SD card so that it doesn't take space away from apps - I don't live in an area where I can just stream everything all the time, do you ?
If you plan on doing things with custom ROMs and such, an external SD card can be a lifesaver, too - and general convenience. But if you don't, the Nexus 4 might be a good choice since it will receive updates without you having to do anything.
Removable battery is nice because if you are buying off-contract, especially, you don't have to worry about babying the battery - the battery will lose so much charge per year no matter if you treated it perfectly. If you're not getting a subsidized upgrade, that might not be something you want to be stuck with. It's also nice to be able to carry a spare battery especially if you're playing games for an extended period of time (I carry one so I can play emulators between classes without having to worry "what if I don't go right home ?").

Nexus 4 is a great mobile but still there are few drawbacks of this mobile.
Consider other similar mobiles in the price range, S3, HTC, Sony etc

Look about this http://www.wikomobile.com/telephone-portable-Cink-Peax.php at €170

Yes, get the nexus 4 !!

Well , that depends what you like , right now the samsung galaxy s4 is the fastest phone , but not the most beautiful and the one who is better made. The most beautiful and the second fastest phone is HTC one , but this one doesnt have a sd card slot. Personally i will get the htc one with contract from vodafone , it will cost 300€ , its the first time i will buy a phone in this mode , but phones are getting bigger and bigger , and rumors already said that nexus 5 will get a 5.2" display. So every year phones get 0.2" bigger , so i will keep the htc until phones start to get smaller.
That was my opinion. Have a great year

Any HTC, Nexus device.

The battery and SD card isn't so bad. 16GB is plenty for me! The battery isn't really of a issue. Most of the time the phone will be in standby.
How is the speed btw? Good enough for intensive apps? including games hehe
But I do agree the Nexus 4 is probably my pick but go ahead with suggestion. I already have 108 euros and need 450 so im getting there!!!
Really exited to get my first ever smartphone, android phone. Some of you might think that I am really behind stuff but he im 18 and didn't have the money first :crying: now I'm working hard to earn it so I can get a new phone

I'd wait for the S4. I mean, the OS is pretty much the same with every phone, so what you really want to be looking at is specs.

Help choosing a phone..

Hi
I'm planning to move on from my SGS 2 to a newer model.. but I'm not able to make up my mind.
I'm interested in the 4G SGS 3 though I've been thinking about the next nexus phone from LG or the upcoming HTC One X+...
My current phone is working perfectly fine but I'm looking for a phone with more speed as well as with 4G/LTE..
Should I wait it out for early next year to have better choices or should I just go in for the SGS 3?
By the way, Samsung is my preferred manufacturer, followed by HTC.. I've no idea how LG phones are in terms of build quality, support, etc.
Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Thanks.. I like the SGS3 a lot, though it's just so difficult to decide on one phone...
By the way, here in Finland, we have a deal going on for the Galaxy Nexus, with the current price of 370€ (http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/s?s=1&q=51397+or+23156) and is valid until next Monday 21.10 and this seems to be the best deal in Finland at the moment. The standard price is ~450€ I think...
Is there any sense is getting the Galaxy Nexus considering there are the newer Nexus devices coming up? In particular HTC “J Butterfly” Nexus 5 (along with the LG Nexus as mentioned previously)?
Thanks again. Cheers...
Edit: Also, regarding the processor, I'm no expert but from the reviews and reports, I see there are the Tegra 3 processors (like the one in HTC One X+) or the Qualcomm 'snapdragon' processors or Exynos processors and similar... Which is the better one? Should I chose a device that comes with a specific processor if I want to have a speedy, fast, high end phone?
And of course, I would like a manufacturer that regularly updates the OS without major delays whenever a new Android is being released...
Well I have the nexus, and that price is very very high. Ofcourse it is new from store but I have my nexus for 275 euro's. Second hand but only 6 month's old. Great phone but if I were you, I should wait for the gs4. Depends on how fast you need a phone, considering the gs4 is coming out in march 2013. If you can't wait I should definately buy the HTC one X+ or the GS3.

Thanks a lot.
I'm not in a real hurry to get a new phone as my current SGS2 is working great (and there is a possibility that JB will arrive soon for the SGS2)... But I just wanted to kind of 'upgrade' from the SGS2 to a more powerful, newer phone... Hence my questions regarding should I really wait (though I understand it's a kind of silly question considering how many new devices keep popping up every month) or just go in for a model such as the SGS3 or HTC One X+ that's been proven to be a great phone....
Basically I can wait for the new one.. I'm looking at having a new one by March/April 2013.
If you can wait just wait Mate, I know your feelings so many new phones but can't choose a good one and every time there is coming a new one out.

Work phone with an exact requirement/feature
Background:
I have just bought a Motorola Defy Plus. The reason I purchased it was - I wanted a phone that could allow me t record work calls and Defy Plus seemed promising as it enjoys good amount of support in the developers here and it was like very cheap. Now when I see the work involved in rooting and flashing custom rom I find myself not too sure about my capability of managing the whole process. Even if I do manage the rooting and flashing the custom rom, I still do not have any definitive information if call recording will be possible
New search:
Given the above now I am exploring any other phones that will allow me to take care of this requirement of recording my calls incoming and outgoing , without speaker, in the stock straight out of the box condition. Besides this particular requirement my usage of the phone is very mundane - some voice calls, minimal texting , little bit of email, no games , minimal camera, once in a while a couple of minutes of music if ever.
So if any of you can give me a suggestion i.e. which phone and which app - if you have a working combo - which will solve my problem shall appreciate it very much.
Cheers
Wait, even if the nexus devices aren't to your liking they are going to drive the price of current devices down. I have the SGS3 but sources / docs for exynos processors are sketchy so support isn't stellar. TBH if support matters go with nexus although you'll have to sacrifice sd support.

I would recommend the G3. You can wait for the next phone to come up but you'll find that there is always a new phone about to be launched so you can wait forever. I've recently transitioned to the g3 and enjoy it very much. Liked it a lot better once I rooted and put a JB rom on it.

[Q] Keep Nexus, upgrade to Nexus 4 or other?

Merry Christmas all!
I currently have the Nexus which I am more then happy with. My contract runs out beginning of January and I don't know what to do...
Keep my nexus and get the phone upgrade and sell it on ebay etc..
Upgrade to the Nexus 4 and sell my nexus.
Upgrade to Galaxy III and sell Nexus.
Any ideas what I should do? I love my Nexus for the pure Google experience, I don't like my partners Galaxy III as it is bloated with loads of Samsung rubbish.
I think it's between keeping my Nexus and getting the Nexus 4. Or try make as much money as I can by getting an upgrade to sell on.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Should upgrade to the GS3 its way better than the nexus 4 cause of expandable storage plus it is more durable than the nexus 4 as well.
Think I will get the Galaxy 3 and have a play with it using a custom rom.
Then sell my least favorite phone.

I second this. And whoever says a GS3 is a superior device to the N4, hasn't enjoyed using an N4. I have a 16GB, and I've barely used 4 GB. If storage is an issue for you, then by all means get a GS3. If not, you won't regret the N4. It is without a doubt, the best device I have ever used...and I've used quite a few, including the GS3.

Personally, I require a lot of space and can't see myself being limited to 16gb of local space.. its just too little
I would say think between Galaxy S III (or wait for next one), or the Nexus 4. It depends on your needs in a phone. Hell even the Note II is great as well, but it all depends on your uses.
I'm keeping my GNex until I see what the Nexus 5 is going to look like. The Nexus 4 just wasn't a compelling enough upgrade.

Thinking of replacing my samsung note 2

I have sold my s3 and got a note 2 since december from last year.
The reason i bought such a huge phone was for the s pen. It helped me in college for taking notes, but then ive bought an ipad which can work for the same purpose, except without the s pen.
Nowadays im just not finding the note 2 practical for everyday usage. Its just too big.
So now im Thinking of selling it and either buying either an s4, htc one or xperia z.
Can someone give me feedback on those phones?
I love the design of sony phones, but i also cant live without the features of samsung phones

I can't think of any reason the s4 wouldn't be a good choice.
I would recommend the HTC one. Reason why is because you're coming from a note 2 which is pretty much the same as an S4 minus a couple of features and the 1080p display. The Xperia Z would be a very bad choice as it has sub par battery life, lags and the display is really a letdown. The HTC one stands out with is fantastic display, it's flawless performance, the amazing boomsound, the phone looks beautiful and dev support is excellent.
At the end of the day everything is a matter of preference but do yourself a favor, whatever phone you choose make sure it's between the S4 or HTC one, the XZ is really not that good. I wanted to also recommend the optimus G pro but you said you want something smaller. Cheers.

Neither the HTC One or S4. If you are thinking of getting a phone for long term, you would be better of waiting for a Snapdragon 800 CPU phone to be released soon instead of getting a Snapdragon 600 S4 or One.
i'll earn money to buy it
Do you require the use of a MicroSD? If the answer is yes, then you can forget about the HTC One. (Say all you want about how it has 64GB internal storage. MTP is so horrendously slow and unstable that copying a 3GB Bluray file simply doesn't work.)
If you can, wait for September. The IFA will be hosted early september, and many will be announing their new phones there. Most are switching to an S800, which is more powerful.
If you can't wait, I'd suggest going with the S4.
Im not really in a big hurry, but what new flag ships are rumored to be shown?
Since you really like S Pen feature. Galaxy S4 should be your choice.

Hes gonna have to put up a little more than $100 on top of his budget to even get the S3 or N4. But you're right, any phone worth $200 is probably at least 2 years old if were looking at the average phone market. I have a Galaxy Nexus which you could probably lowball for $150-ish and it does a descent job. Its starting to show its age but development is great on the phone.
I usually get close to 20 hours of use with ~1:30 Hours of display time. Not the best I know, but it does the job
try xperia miro
not recommended for HD gaming though, but it's cool
Android phones using MTK6589 from China are around that price range.

S3 or nexus 4. I would say try to capture a lil more dough and buy a n4 new but if you can eBay/craigslist one then do it. The gnex battery life is horrible and the nexus 4 is almost guaranteed to get key lime pie or android 5.0 so future proof that 200 bucks because 14 months later you still have a relevant device.

Ditch S4 over N5?

Hello, xda'ers!
I have a fairly simple question. S4 is my first smartphone and I love it. At first I hated it because of TW, but now I converted it to basically a GP edition with Danvdh's ROM. Very smooth, haven't seen any lag since the day I flashed it.
The only thing why I'm considering N5 is because of its future proofness. (SD800, A330 instead of S4's SD600 and A320). I consider myself between average and power user. I like to game here and there and so on.
-Non-removable battery
-No SD slot
-Smaller battery
-Weaker camera
+Way better specs
+Constant updates straight from Google
+Ability to flash Android L and better dev support (i guess)
It all comes down to this: I want N5 because of better specs, updates, dev support and that's it. I've read many articles on these both devices and haven't clearly decided yet, because most of them go for N5 even with all the cons I mentioned. For me, battery life and SD slot (if it's 16GB version) is the most important.
How many of you guys have ditched S4 over the N5? Could you please share your experience and whether if you regret it?
The specs aren't that much better. There's kind of half a generation between them. The One plus would be a more logical step up
Also we only have 9 months left of official updates on the N5. Not sure what you mean by "constant updates". It doesn't get constant updates. It gets fast updates. But not constant. It only gets the minor updates. E.g it got 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4. It got nothing in between
It has good developer support but after 9 months when no one is officially updating the official drivers, its going to be like any other unsupported device.

Yeah... I just wish I could somehow get the N5 for a week (test it, etc.) to really decide which one is the one for me.

Ask someone who has a N5 if you can try it for a minute
Yep the galaxy nexus is a great example Google doesn't support it so roms aren't as stable and my nexus 5 will be the same way although the nexus 5 will be a lot less laggy

My friend has an S4 (non-root). I would mess with it from time to time, it seems like a pretty good device, even if it is stock, so I wouldn't consider the N5 to be that big of an upgrade, concidering your S4 is rooted/bootunlocked (not sure how the dev support is over there though).
For all your conS on the N5; battery life, non removable battery, no SD slot, ect, try to think logically, lol. Eg. Look at battery life threads for the N5 and compare them to YOUR daily usage. See if 16/32gb storage would be enough for all YOUR needs. Ect ect.
For your pro, haha. The updates. The N5 is pretty old in technology terms, so who knows how many updates we'll see after L release. I would think the dev support for this phone would last for some time though.
Personally, I would wait a bit to see if something else catches your eye, or if the N5 price drops.
Tl;dr: Weigh the pros vs Con's with YOUR usage.

It seems like cons weighs more than pros, at least for me. Well, I might wait for the Nexus 6, but since I live in EU, the price will be super high (instead of $350, it will cost at least $500 in where I live) I have a chance to sell my S4 for 300 euros right now, and brand new N5 (16gb) costs from 277 here.

-Non-removable battery -do you even need that(get a juice battery pack and done)?
-No SD slot -32Gb will be fine how much can you put into a phone?
-Smaller battery -yes,but with custom per-app profiles
-Weaker camera -i like it,really fine pictures (my opinion)
+Way better specs -idk what to say here...i'm really pleased with the N5 in terms of gaming, smooth, stability.
+Constant updates straight from Google -for a long time
+Ability to flash Android L and better dev support (i guess) -there is already Android L developer preview
I had iphone before and Nexus was the only android phone that made me ditch the iOS for Android.Had a samsung for a few weeks(hate it) then tryed the Nexus and love it!
Go into a store and try the phone before buy.Idk what to say against S4 didn't used it for long time to give an opinion.

Not constant. Only versioned updates. We don't get every fix when it is ready. Only when the version changes 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 for example.
Not for a long time. 18 months update cycle. Already 50% through that.
I had S2,S3,S4 and must say all of this phones where very good (all rooted and on custom roms ). Them my wife got a present and its was a brand new nexus 5. To shorten my story> From that moment that I powered on nexus 5 I never took S4 in my hand ever again. Feels faster, more manly (i have black one), and battery is better or same as S4 + much more fun coz its much easy-er to go from one custom rom to another and it doesn't have that KNOX security sh1t.
Cheers!

Though Google only guarantee they will support their devices for 18 months, the Nexus 4 is already 20 months old and it looks very much like Google are developing an L release for it. Hopefully this a sign that they will go beyond the 18 months for the more popular Nexus 5, though this is of course completely up to Google's generosity.

Maybe, but I wouldn't rely on that.
