[Q] Ringtones on SD Card? - Milestone XT720 General

I know there are threads out there for other phones, but don't see one for ours. Ours shouldn't be drastically different, but hey, with the XT720 you never know! lol
The new ICS mod that mchlbenner has going on over in the dev section is great imo but doesn't come with ringtones.
So I got poking around on the net and there are a ton of packages out there, obviously. Many of them are several MB in size, however, and I don't want to store that in /system/media/audio/ringtones
I'd rather store it on my SD Card (16 GB class 10)
Where would I put them, and how would I tell the rom where to look there for them? I mean, right now the list of available ringtones in Settings is pulling from /system/media/audio/ringtones. How do I tell System not to look there, but to look in my directory on the SD Card?
Thanks!

IIRC just make a ringtones folder in the root of your sdcard

That simple, huh? I read that for a Samsung but just couldn't believe that would be it for our special phone!
I'll give it a whirl soon, thanks!

Could you upload the stock ringtone's for this phone? I am specifically looking for the Urgent sms ringtone that came with the xt720.

preinstalled apps

Anyone have a zip of the preinstalled apps from their Tabs.
By Carrier would be great (Im looking for Sprint's)
I went a little crazy when I rooted and wacked a few apps (I did save them but formatted the card without thinking) Factory restore doesn't get um back.
Hmm nobody has the apps at all?

What you're asking for is a fair bit of work. You may need to wait for more than about 5 hours.

you can do it yourself.
download a firmware (e.g. the one you use), extract the factoryfs.rfs and open it with MagicISO (simply go to file, open, select the factoryfs.rfs file and hit open), there you can select the apps from system/app
I have a UK tab which came pre-installed with NOVA HD. Since changing the firmware/updating the tab (following a few of the threads on here) I lost a few of the pre-installed apps. I got most of everything back worth anything (and a lot of the Samsung apps were just links to various websites) but I lost NOVA HD. I'm loathe to pay for it and wanted to know if there is any way to get it back? Was tempted to bluetooth the APK from a demo machine. Any suggestions or is it gonna cost me £3?
Thanks

Or you could just try being more patient and/or backup things beforehand as every set of instructions relating to flashing specify. I know perfectly well what I'm talking about, but I do my own research beforehand rather than relying on others to do it for me.

Not 100% sure.
You will need swype.apk from system/app and libswype.so from system/lib
Try it
Thanks again, didn't need lib but I'm guessing that is because I didn't delete it before. I did have issues installing live wall papers though, I ann going to get the lib files and try again.

[mod] sd card speed fix...

I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
All thanks to Brainmaster for whipping this up..
I will post the results I've had to save you a few steps...
I did his test mothod using root explorer and sd Tools and tested each one of his recommended settings..
(I have the stock SDcard that came in my showcase, i'm assuming it's probably the same in the Mesmerize?) It's a Samsung microSDHC class2 16GB..
I'm running the EB11pnp3 with voodoo lagfix enabled. The OP says you need to test these to see which one works for you. But I thought that if we have the same phone/same sdcard then it MAY be the same results...
so here's my Results:
128 3.7 MB/s "WRITE" 14.1 MB/s "READ" **This is what the phone is set to at default
1024 3.2/14.6
2048 5.1/14.4
3072 5.3/15.0
4096 6.7/15.0 <<<this is as far as he has listed and it gives the best results, Doubling the "Write" time and improving the "READ" time by a LITTLE!!!
I haven't tried flashing yet, still reading through the pages, but came across this POST.. Which may be the way we would have to make it stick past rebooting...
Maybe some of the SCH-I500's dev can take a look at this and improve it even more for us..
After Testing for hours, i could never get a reliable score with SD tools from the market.. I'm thinking this is just one more ****ty issue with the Galaxy S phones!!! Thanks Samsung, I'll never buy any more of your **** products..

not sure why there would be, you're just adding cache to the sdcard... and like the OP states, if you do this through rootexplorer it reverts back to factory after rebooting..
You have to do one of his methods to make it permanent...
There's also an app in the Market called SD Speed Boost which does the same thing. It doesn't require you to use Root Explorer to change the value and it has a Set at Boot option so no flashing from recovery is required either.
I bet you could use Tasker to automate this at boot time as well. Nice find, Elijah. I had seen the app, but I would rather do it this way.

If you flash one of the zips from the original post it is automated or if you use the app I mentioned it is automated, not really sure why you'd need another method to accomplish automation but to each their own. The zips just copy a shell script to init that set the value at each boot and the app just sets it when it runs at each boot. Of course the init route would occur prior to the app, but don't see much difference regardless of the chosen solution.
EDIT: Also YMMV with whatever option you choose to apply this mod. 1meg,2meg,3meg,4meg all yielded similar results for me, but I'm not using the Class 2 16gig that comes with the phone. I would imagine slower cards would see more of a benefit.
The reason I would rather use Tasker is to limit the number of things besides the ROM that I'm flashing to the phone (just to keep things as clean as possible). Plus, with Tasker doing it at boot, any future ROMs I install won't need any tweaking. I'll just have to import my profiles, which I'll be doing anyway.
ok flashing in CWM didn't work... It didn't hold the value change after rebooting..
And speaking of the app that does this... The Galaxy S isn't listed as compatible
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12478126&postcount=74
this post is interesting.. but the thing is that our phones don't have the /system/etc/init.d

Just verified that the app does change the value to whatever I select. Could be that the author just hasn't tested on Galaxy S and therefore didn't risk saying that it was compatible. I mean were just talking file manipulation here, nothing more.
SN: I am not that author of the software nor do I know the author of the software. I'm just trying to help and I happened to know about the app cause I downloaded it a while ago. I know no one said anything, but as I read back over my post I did sound like a spokesperson for the app, lol.

and i'm glad to hear the app works, but this seems like it shouldn't be that hard to figure it out... I have a feeling some GREAT minds are reading this
edit*
I've read through the entire 27 pages of the OP and haven't figured it out, think i've seen a couple people saying writing a script will do the job, but the probelm is it says to push the scripts to a folder that's not on our phone i think that may be the hardest part......
well, got 4096 to stick after rebooting, now to see if i still have the speeds.... If it works i'll update the first post....

So what's the fastest Write/READ scores you've gotten with the app? And you have a showcase right?
Also let me know what sdcard you've got..

internal memory music

hey ive searched but couldnt find a solution....my question is that whether i can play music from internal storage as 4 gb is too much for apps....how can i do that...im on ota ics
Short answer? No. The internal memory is reserved only for the system partition. Even if you could throw some mp3's into a folder in the system side. There's not a music player out there that would look for the files in the system partition. So, no man. You're outta luck.

This is some what useless way to say if there is no other option..... The only real way would be to use something like root explorer..... From there you could move a folder of music from sd to /folder name..... Then from root explorer you could use the music files one at a time .... Best bet go to rat shack and get a 32 gb sd for like $20.....

Well, actually you don't want to stick in /system or /anythingelse, you will bootloop.... If you copy anything to internal storage, it is best to "attempt" put it in /data/music or something, but that is still not a good way to do it. Now this is all just in theory mind you, as it is known that putting things that were not meant to go in certain places on this phone has caused way more heartache than it should and caused more bootloops than I care to elaborate on now.

+1 :good: Yea I have had more than my fair share or bootloops from just looking at my / wrong LOL.....
all of my internal memory is going waste..i hardly use any apps....all i do is music and vids.....i had 16 gb card but it had problems with my ph.....my battery wasnt lasting long enough.... so internal memory problem is the same with other phones also ....i wonder how ppl use nexus phones?
Some phones have user accessible internal storage and in those phones it's done in a way that the user wont be able to modify critical system files. The Atrix 2 is not one of those phones so if you make a mistake you will get a bootloop like hankbizzo5 said. How did you determine that the SD card was reducing your battery life?
Just make sure you get a class 4 card and you'll be fine.
my battery was draining very fast...so i used battery monitor widget...i showed me 200-300 mA discharge even when screen off....so i formatted....same peroblem....i changed the sd from 16 gb sandisk class 4 to 2 gb ....nw everything is fine
so nothing could be done? i mean galaxy note....s3 all have large internal....cant we do anything abt it?....i mean atrix 2 is one of the best dual cores around...i thought this would be solved with ics...some say moto media centre transfers music to internal but i doubt

Yeah, I got an idea.... go find Jims sig and click on his dropbox link, sign up, and you will have 2.5gbs free online storage and you can even put your files in a public folder to play them from anywhere. Its not 4gb but it could be if you then get other people to sign up.
FWIW, I used a 32gb class 10 from time to time and never really noticed a battery problem. That's interesting.

No nothing can be done as far as actually utilizing the internal storage for your personal use. Yes, I'm not surprised your note can do it, add I have access to my internal storage on my skyrocket. But you just can't do it with the A2.

[Question] Htc Inspire 4G Camera SdCard

Hello,
I have a question about HTC Inspire 4G. I accidently stripped the gold pins on the sdcard module, so when you insert an sdcard inside of the sdcard module (slot), and then activate the camera, the camera activates, and a popup message says "Please insert an sdcard". Well, obviously it will say that, because I messed up the pins inside the module. I can get a replacement for 10.00 usd on ebay for it. But, thats not my question, I would like to see if I can root the phone, and have the pictures be saved to the internal memory instead of the sdcard.. Does anyone think this will work? If I root the phone, will the camera give me an option to save a picture anywhere else other then that darn sdcard slot? I appreciate it who ever is willing to help

I can only speak for the ROM I'm currently using, codefireX. I just looked at Camera and Gallery settings, and I don't see an option to choose where to save pictures.
Well, before you root the phone you will need to repair the sd card module. Which will then have solved your issue regarding the cam.

Also, is their any rom I can use that will have a feature to save pictures/recorded videos to the internal memory? If not I might as well go spend a few bucks on ebay and use gentle hands to dissamble the htc xD

I guess it could be theorerically possible by modyfing the script (heck if I know how to), but since the phone has limited memory I don't see much fotos being stored.
If it is possible then one could add a script for it to use 'x' amount of memory (to limit the amount used) and an option which asks where you want to save it. Which would get tedious after a while being asked constantly where to save the pic - or it could ask once per session. As well you could set it to default and somewhere in settings to change the default.

I read some where, where a developer said that some android apps come equiped with internal/sd card options to picture saving picture. One of the apps the developer said that would work is a free app called Camera ICS. Idk, I am in the process of downloading it. I shall let you all know if this could be an option.
Update: Did not work for the camera app

Please call Samsung about 4.3 update for google edition S4 and writing to SD card

For everyone with the S4 google edition. As you know the ability of many apps to be able to write to the sd card was busted with the 4.3 update. Just got off the phone with Samsung and explained the situation and they said they have not received any other calls on this and basically nothing will be done until they receive more calls. So please let them know. their number is 1 800 726 7864 Thank you!

If like me you don't want to root no. Some apps that could save to SD card(camera JB+)developers are working on a fix but from what I read today it doesn't sound good. One program that still works is ES File Explorer to move files to SD card. But not the greatest solution. Hopefully Samsung will put out a fix if we make some noise.

Dude, just root the phone, install Busybox and use Foldermount to move apps to the sdcard
These threads are funny. Everyone *****es about Samsung's apps, framework, overlay and customizations so they release a phone that's as AOSP as possible. Then people ***** about not having access to Samsung's customizations. OP, Google's adamantly against external storage which is why Nexus devices don't have it. Be lucky the SGS4 GE supports it at all which is a customization to AOSP in itself. There are two SGS4s - pick the one that works for you. Expecting Samsung to continue to add their own features to a phone intentionally kept as "pure" as possible is a bit nuts and goes against why GE edition phones exist in the first place. The post above this one is the answer to your problem. Not spamming Samsung.

Uhhh, you're a little misinformed. We can't write to the SD card at all. Not just apps2sd is broken. I don't care about that. I can't create a folder on my SD Card with Solid Explorer without rooting my phone and modifying a system file. That's bull****. The phone is advertised on play.google.com as supporting expandable storage. They need to fix it.

You're right. I am. But you guys looking for people's help in getting the problem fixed also did a crappy job of explaining it. Let me help.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/08/ga...-android-4-3-breaks-sd-card-writing-for-apps/
Since it's an identified problem that's been picked up by the media you can pretty much assume a fix is in the works. Relying on low-paid third party call center agents as a source of info ("Samsung's not aware of the problem") isn't really that wise as they are typically the last to know about both problems and their solutions.
Hope it gets fixed soon.
I called this morning to the mobile services number. They did ask me for my IMEI number he repeated the issue back to me and he understood it as a SD writing issue not apps to SD issue.
I also requested he put in to Google "4.3 issue with s4 Google edition" and they will see several post explaining the issue.
He said he would forward to technical support.
To those with a GT-I9505G please call even if you do not care about the issue.
Although ES file explorer work to move pics and video to the Ext SD card, this should be fixed for this model since it is about the only pure android OS with an SD card.

4.2.2 was great! of the apps you mentioned I only use Google Play music and have not had any force closes. The only issue for my is the ext sd card writing bug in which my camera apps, JB+ camera, Procapture and Zoom camera FX cannot save pictures to the ext SD card like they could on 4.2.2!
You people expect an answer by calling samsung? Seriously?
Let me tell you this- they don't care. They got away with your $$$ and don't give a rat's poop.
They release updates and put what they want on it when they feel like it (or a court order forces them).
That's why XDA exists so we won't have to be so reliant on samsung regarding features that we want.

They apparently listened on the low available space on the S4 and brought back apps to SD for the S4 in a fairly quick update. In the case of the S4 Google Edition, we are taking about one line of code in the platform.xml file. I do expect them to issue a fix. Why wouldn't they if it is a legitimate bug? If not, they may as well stop making the S4 GPe because nobody will buy them if this is not fixed. Many people that buy the s4 GPe want their apps to have write access the ext SD card.
The Samsung email address page is a little tricky to find here it is

This is what I wrote feel free to use all or part
I have a recently purchased Samsung s4 google edition i9505G from the Google play store. After the 4.3 android update my apps have lost the ability to write to the sd card. This has been documented in many articles on the web.
I have talked to Google and they told me a fix for this would be your responsibility.
Are you aware of this problem? Are you working on a fix? Thanks!
I'm sure this will be patched eventually but I don't think bugging them will make it any quicker lol

Because the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease?
Did you see where Google refunded the shipping cost on the Nexus 7 sleeve because of the uproar on the outrageous shipping cost. These companies listen and respond once you let them know. At $649 a pop for this device they should fix this.
