[mod] sd card speed fix... - Samsung Mesmerize

I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
All thanks to Brainmaster for whipping this up..
I will post the results I've had to save you a few steps...
I did his test mothod using root explorer and sd Tools and tested each one of his recommended settings..
(I have the stock SDcard that came in my showcase, i'm assuming it's probably the same in the Mesmerize?) It's a Samsung microSDHC class2 16GB..
I'm running the EB11pnp3 with voodoo lagfix enabled. The OP says you need to test these to see which one works for you. But I thought that if we have the same phone/same sdcard then it MAY be the same results...
so here's my Results:
128 3.7 MB/s "WRITE" 14.1 MB/s "READ" **This is what the phone is set to at default
1024 3.2/14.6
2048 5.1/14.4
3072 5.3/15.0
4096 6.7/15.0 <<<this is as far as he has listed and it gives the best results, Doubling the "Write" time and improving the "READ" time by a LITTLE!!!
I haven't tried flashing yet, still reading through the pages, but came across this POST.. Which may be the way we would have to make it stick past rebooting...
Maybe some of the SCH-I500's dev can take a look at this and improve it even more for us..
After Testing for hours, i could never get a reliable score with SD tools from the market.. I'm thinking this is just one more ****ty issue with the Galaxy S phones!!! Thanks Samsung, I'll never buy any more of your **** products..

not sure why there would be, you're just adding cache to the sdcard... and like the OP states, if you do this through rootexplorer it reverts back to factory after rebooting..
You have to do one of his methods to make it permanent...

There's also an app in the Market called SD Speed Boost which does the same thing. It doesn't require you to use Root Explorer to change the value and it has a Set at Boot option so no flashing from recovery is required either.

I bet you could use Tasker to automate this at boot time as well. Nice find, Elijah. I had seen the app, but I would rather do it this way.

If you flash one of the zips from the original post it is automated or if you use the app I mentioned it is automated, not really sure why you'd need another method to accomplish automation but to each their own. The zips just copy a shell script to init that set the value at each boot and the app just sets it when it runs at each boot. Of course the init route would occur prior to the app, but don't see much difference regardless of the chosen solution.
EDIT: Also YMMV with whatever option you choose to apply this mod. 1meg,2meg,3meg,4meg all yielded similar results for me, but I'm not using the Class 2 16gig that comes with the phone. I would imagine slower cards would see more of a benefit.

The reason I would rather use Tasker is to limit the number of things besides the ROM that I'm flashing to the phone (just to keep things as clean as possible). Plus, with Tasker doing it at boot, any future ROMs I install won't need any tweaking. I'll just have to import my profiles, which I'll be doing anyway.

ok flashing in CWM didn't work... It didn't hold the value change after rebooting..
And speaking of the app that does this... The Galaxy S isn't listed as compatible

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12478126&postcount=74
this post is interesting.. but the thing is that our phones don't have the /system/etc/init.d

Just verified that the app does change the value to whatever I select. Could be that the author just hasn't tested on Galaxy S and therefore didn't risk saying that it was compatible. I mean were just talking file manipulation here, nothing more.
SN: I am not that author of the software nor do I know the author of the software. I'm just trying to help and I happened to know about the app cause I downloaded it a while ago. I know no one said anything, but as I read back over my post I did sound like a spokesperson for the app, lol.

ha, no problem..
and i'm glad to hear the app works, but this seems like it shouldn't be that hard to figure it out... I have a feeling some GREAT minds are reading this
edit*
I've read through the entire 27 pages of the OP and haven't figured it out, think i've seen a couple people saying writing a script will do the job, but the probelm is it says to push the scripts to a folder that's not on our phone i think that may be the hardest part......

well, got 4096 to stick after rebooting, now to see if i still have the speeds.... If it works i'll update the first post....

So what's the fastest Write/READ scores you've gotten with the app? And you have a showcase right?
Also let me know what sdcard you've got..
I'm just trying to see what speeds i should be trying to achieve..

Bringing the triple post back there Eli?

I too tried the OP flash via CWM earlier... speeds seem to vary through my tests with SD Tools.

I'm getting around 8mb write/ 20mb read on a transcend class 6 8gb card. I technically have a fascinate that ive mesmerized. I also went back and made the manual changes without using the app and they almost mirrored when using the app, minus normal variances of course.

well, if that's all it gives with you a class 6 card, then there's definitely no point with a class 2...
It looks like yet another shortcoming of The Galaxy S phones. All the HTC report SIGNIFICANT Gains, yet our phone barely budges..
I hate this phone more and more everyday

preinstalled apps

Anyone have a zip of the preinstalled apps from their Tabs.
By Carrier would be great (Im looking for Sprint's)
I went a little crazy when I rooted and wacked a few apps (I did save them but formatted the card without thinking) Factory restore doesn't get um back.
Hmm nobody has the apps at all?

What you're asking for is a fair bit of work. You may need to wait for more than about 5 hours.

you can do it yourself.
download a firmware (e.g. the one you use), extract the factoryfs.rfs and open it with MagicISO (simply go to file, open, select the factoryfs.rfs file and hit open), there you can select the apps from system/app
I have a UK tab which came pre-installed with NOVA HD. Since changing the firmware/updating the tab (following a few of the threads on here) I lost a few of the pre-installed apps. I got most of everything back worth anything (and a lot of the Samsung apps were just links to various websites) but I lost NOVA HD. I'm loathe to pay for it and wanted to know if there is any way to get it back? Was tempted to bluetooth the APK from a demo machine. Any suggestions or is it gonna cost me £3?
Thanks
Gareth

Not 100% sure.
You will need swype.apk from system/app and libswype.so from system/lib
Try it
Thanks again, didn't need lib but I'm guessing that is because I didn't delete it before. I did have issues installing live wall papers though, I ann going to get the lib files and try again.
Swyped on my EVO-CM6.1.2(turbo v7.6)

[Q] Galaxy S 4G: how much is your application storage?

I caught one with 190MB application storage which is unacceptable for most.
I use MT4 and NS instead of nexus one because of that. Don't ever think app2SD helps because it won't work when the phone is in USB mass storage mode or memory card is removed.
I had about the same until I started adding some of my apps to the phone. I can't even add all my apps because of the internal storage. Can't wait for root and some Roms (CyanogenMod 7).

Man this thing is pissing me off. I can't even install half the apps I had installed on my original Vibrant.
T-mobile should give us options on installing apps as soon as we turn it on. They just throw **** we won't use on the phone and call it a day. Now what if we had no devs nor root or anything like that? Look at what we would be stuck with. In that case people would just return the phone.

Cool I rooted it and have Titanium Backup installed. Just no CWM yet for ROM Manager.
I have all my appz installed with no issue... honestly 16gb onboard made the vibrant slow. im glad to have less... and I can install as many apps to my sd card as i want.
I see someone has said they have over 500mb of internal, how is that possible and why is mine not the same?
I'm on live chat with T-Mobile right now. The lady just told me...
"Okay, thank you for that information. There definitely seems to be an issue here. I am looking further into this"
So obviously there is a problem

Ok cool, let us know what's going on. I have a total of 539MB internal storage.
Specs says 1GB! I read that off phonedog I think.
"You should definitley have more memory than what you are showing. I can get you the manufacturers information. Since it is a Samsung device their support teams will definitely be able to assist you a little better than us at the moment.
_Jessica C: I know that you don't want to go back to the store, but if there is an issue with the device it may be the best bet since it is a new phone. I can also recommend taking it to a T-mobile direct dealer. They may be able to test your software. They know anything and everything about these phones.
_Jessica C: I do apologize but I am limited with my information at the time."
Since it's a new phone she doesn't have all the info, etc. At least they know there is a problem now.
I'm going to go to a t-mobile store and talk to them so I'll let you know what they say
LOL
i doubt that a t mobile rep would know anything and everything about the phone.
Ok, I just got off with a T-Mobile rep and she said the internal memory should have a total of 512MB. ...sucks! But good thing we have a 16GB sdcard.

Ok, I can't stand my phone to be on stock so I think I will be going back to my MT4G.
I'll be back when Rom Manager supports the phone, full recovery and some nice ROMs starts flying in. (I WANT CM7!)

I will be checking this section and will be posting as well.

I had a butt-load of apps backed up with titanium and I was able to install all of them with no issues. I started with 539MB internal, I've got 154MB free. I have 220 user apps installed.

Apart from the few known bugs that are really hard to fix, what should be improved in order to bring an update? I don't see where things can be improved atm. Everything is there.

Actually i am working on one that no one has been able to fix well two actually
1. that horrible first picture lag.
2. flash to be functional.
I actually succeeded in fixing the 1st one.
still working on the second, but i feel i am very close....
No promises but i my have a ROM out this week end mix of Khal's and M's.
NO PROMISES!!!!!!
Guys plz don't take me in the wrong way!
what i wanted to ask is can't we get cyanogen or other roms working........
and whenever i take a pic my phone stops for 5-10 secs.....no haptic feedback and then comes to normal.
actually i also wanted android 2.3.....and other things to make my phone fast and get a quadrant score above 2000 atleast.
i am again saying plz don't take it in the wrong way and get irritated over it!
it's just a question.!
The problem is that our xt720 its bootloader is locked this stop ous from flashing customer roms

A very important component to how long it takes after a shot is the write speed of your SD card. The card Motorola ships with the XT720 is abysmal. Also, apparently there are a number of fraudulent faster cards on the market even from reputable companies. I got a Kingston class 10, but it really isn't class 10 except for a one second burst when it first starts writing. Anyway, my point is that hardware is part of the picture.

Using:

The program doesn't do anything when I click the button to apply, but picture taking seems to be somewhat faster, so I dunno if it actually works or not.

[Question] Htc Inspire 4G Camera SdCard

Hello,
I have a question about HTC Inspire 4G. I accidently stripped the gold pins on the sdcard module, so when you insert an sdcard inside of the sdcard module (slot), and then activate the camera, the camera activates, and a popup message says "Please insert an sdcard". Well, obviously it will say that, because I messed up the pins inside the module. I can get a replacement for 10.00 usd on ebay for it. But, thats not my question, I would like to see if I can root the phone, and have the pictures be saved to the internal memory instead of the sdcard.. Does anyone think this will work? If I root the phone, will the camera give me an option to save a picture anywhere else other then that darn sdcard slot? I appreciate it who ever is willing to help

I can only speak for the ROM I'm currently using, codefireX. I just looked at Camera and Gallery settings, and I don't see an option to choose where to save pictures.
Well, before you root the phone you will need to repair the sd card module. Which will then have solved your issue regarding the cam.

I guess it could be theorerically possible by modyfing the script (heck if I know how to), but since the phone has limited memory I don't see much fotos being stored.
If it is possible then one could add a script for it to use 'x' amount of memory (to limit the amount used) and an option which asks where you want to save it. Which would get tedious after a while being asked constantly where to save the pic - or it could ask once per session. As well you could set it to default and somewhere in settings to change the default.

Well here is a code I found for android programming that can save bitmap image to the internal memory. But, I am not a android developer, I have no knowledge of app programming and rom modding: stackoverflow.com/questions/7314125/saving-image-to-internal-memory-and-would-appear-in-the-gallery

I read some where, where a developer said that some android apps come equiped with internal/sd card options to picture saving picture. One of the apps the developer said that would work is a free app called Camera ICS. Idk, I am in the process of downloading it. I shall let you all know if this could be an option.
Update: Did not work for the camera app

S6 RAM Management (Possible Fix)

No idea if this works, just came across it and figured I'd point people to the discussion thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/general/s6-ram-management-discussion-t3128229
Saw this as well. Wanted to see if this worked on the VZW S6 as well before taking the plunge.

I looked into making the changes to the build.prop but ours is pretty different than the tmobile version. The instructions state that not all S6's will have the same lines to delete but they also mention that leaving duplicates will cause a bootloop. I don't feel like having to odin and wipe my phone if it doesn't work and at this point I cannot nandroid. I will wait for someone braver than I to post their results here :fingers-crossed:

I did this on my s6 Edge Verizon running oe2... I didn't add the duplicate lines, I edited the existing code, and added the required additional lines. It has improve memory issue

I added the lines and deleted the duplicate lines (was about 3 or 4 lines)
Did seem to do the trick.
**These are the lines i used and**
#MultiTasking Tweaks
ro.config.dha_cached_max=15 - duplicate line
ro.config.dha_empty_max=42 - duplicate line
ro.config.dha_empty_init=42 -duplicate line
ro.config.dha_th_rate=2.3 -duplicate line (maybe cant remember)
ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=0.545
ro.config.sdha_apps_bg_max=70
ro.config.oomminfree_high=7628,9768,11909,14515,16655,20469
Yep. I did the same thing, and I'm not getting as many redrawn at all. Apps are definitely staying in the state I left them instead if restarting. Very happy.
Scrub that.
My phone was sitting in my pocket for 10 minutes, and when I went back to the apps, they all restarted. I hadn't noticed this much before now, but it's annoying me now.

Eh. I went for it. Just a heads up to others, there was only 1 duplicate value for me to delete, not the 3 or 4 that most people are reporting.
Not sure why the differences but my phone didn't get stuck in a boot loop :good:. I will try to remember to post back after using the phone for a bit to see if there is a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the reminder!
Overall, switching back and forth between apps does seem faster. I haven't noticed any slow-downs after extended periods of time (2+ days without restarts). The phone doesn't run any hotter, battery life seems the same. Apps still reset after a while though, relay for reddit is something I use quite often but if I don't use it for a few hours it reloads.
I was hoping this would solve a slow-down issue that I am having where I am running spotify, waze, and textra's pop-up response (as a passenger of course). It didn't, the phone still slows down in this situation.
Overall, I don't see any downside to the tweak, so go for it.
Just a thought. Has anyone thought about using an apps2sd type of app to free up memory space? I remember having to do this years ago on an older phone (probably an older nexus)
Admittedly we shouldn't have to be doing this, but needs must.

This doesn't make sense to me. How does installing the app on sd card effect ram?

I think I've confused myself. I give up. This phone is an enigma. I wish it didn't have TouchWiz.

Why did you buy it then or better, why didn't you return it?

This literally has NOTHING to do with RAM. RAM does not equal storage space. What you are referring to is freeing up storage space -- again nothing to do with RAM. Secondly, there is no SD card space, so this does not even make sense to do on the GS6.
Now, I have a question for those who have edited the build.prop. Has anyone used Root Explorer to do so? Secondly, to avoid bootlooping, did anyone change permissions of the build.prop file? To quote someone from a different forum:

after editing make sure permissions are 0644 on it or you will boot loop.

Have you guys changed permissions to this? I want to mess around with my build.prop but don't want to boot loop because I'd have to Odin and it'd just be a hassle / annoying.

Because there's no viable alternative.

Sadly I agree with you. It sucks that on vzw we have to pick between choices that imo each have very negative things about them.

I changed my build.prop file using root explorer (long click and edit in text editor)
When I saved it, it gave it the right permissions as far as I could see. It also backs up the original file as well.

Also, I trusted Samsung to have given some thought to memory management themselves, and not have us figure it the f**k out. I thought I was done with this years ago.
My retired moto x on Kit Kat is far superior to this phone in many regards.
i'm just frustrated. This is an expensive-assed phone, and it looks like we are being treated as guinea pigs. Not a pleasant feeling.
Just did this and restarted, phone seems to be a little snappier though my RAM still shows pretty low. System is taking up 1.3gb down from 1.4gb and my free is hovering around 800 mb. still not ideal but not terrible.

Curious, what is your idea of ideal?

Over 1gb free would be ideal. I dont have a lot of apps running besides a few email clients and messaging apps, and I'm running CleanROM as well.
