[Q] Restoring HTC inspire to factory - HTC Inspire 4G

Over the weekend i rooted the inspire my gf has. Unfortunately i missed the ace kit by 1 month. I tired using the easy root kit and it would not do anything besides unlock the bootloader. I want to try and perform the s-off method in order to allow my gf to add her own roms without me having to use teamviewer.
so i have two questions. For those that have tried the manual s-off method, is there a way to go back in case things get stuck? What would i need to do to prep the phone? Restore the original rom?

If you follow one of the guides here properly there shouldnt be any issue. There is a way to restore any problem on a device to factory stock settings using a RUU.exe. There is a easy way of telling which you are, just boot into bootloader and see what it says as the first line.
Personally I believe the best way to s-off is using the HTC Super tool v3 it roots, s-off , SIM Unlock etc.

Easiest way to root and enable sideload

Maybe cause I'm use to the captivate but all this stuff seems confusing to me ...like gold card ? And recovery how does one get to recovery ? Etc what is the easiest way to root and enable sideload step by step if possible please

1. Create gold card using a utlility posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157
2. Use bubby's tool to root your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
You should be done in less then an hour
I actually think the hack kit is easier. Plus you don't have to worry about cwm messing up.
I don't see how cwm is messing up? Just try to reflash it until it works. Or use the fix. Do you think rooting the phone with the desire hd method works? The easy one click tool? It includes visionary. Its the same phone, idk why it wouldn't.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Nope the inspire software closes the bug that allowed visionary to work. That's why the goldcard is needed so you can downgrade.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
That seems exsessive. Why reflash until it works when you can just do it once and have it work. Not to mention some people have had to get engineering hboot just to get it to work.

I just wanted to add something about bubby's tool. I used that process to root my phone. Afterward, I could not get the GPS to work at all. So, I reflashed the stock ROM (via SD method) and used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to root the device. I have since loaded a Gingerbread ROM, but reloading stock (without losing S-off) fixed the GPS issue for me.
I guess the bigger news, and the point, is that the psneuter rooting process works on this device. I also used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to enable non-market apps on the stock ROM.
psneuter works because when you went back to stock you were still S-off.

That is what I was trying to convey in my post. The point really, is that you can skip the manual rooting and just reload the stock rom after the s-off steps. It may be beneficial for some people to know that.
Sometimes I just like to do things from scratch myself. If there was a simple s-off process that reloaded a stock rom, I would think some people would be interested in it. Of course, I realize there is a stock rom with simply root and s-off. In my situation, that rom did not have a working GPS for some reason.
I am sure there will be a point where the whole process gets easier anyway. I believe, at some point, somebody will find a way to get s-off without downgrading first.
I was trying to create my gold card tonight but kept getting card is already being used error after formatting and placing the SD card in my phone. That's what happens when I try to get the CID for the card that is. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

HI, guys you've really helped me with all my previous phones. I currently have an Att inspire, it's not rooted but I want to have access to install apk's on my phone everything else is okay. I know about sideloadwonder but, direct downloads and installs on the phone are even better. Does SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse enable non-market apps. thanks.

Non-destructive root for ICS?

Anyone know of a non-destructive root method for ICS? My wife and I are swapping phones. Mine is rooted and all but hers isn't and I want to make a Titanium backup of all her stuff.
So far the only method I know of to root is via OEM unlock and flashing clockwork recovery. Then installing su via CWR. The OEM unlock erases everything.

I believe you can root it without unlocking the boot loader using SuperOneClick but I could be wrong. Either way worth a try
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Move the TitaniumBackup folder to your PC before starting. Don't forget your pictures folder too!
just copy your entire SDcard to your computer , and then after unlocked bootloader copy it back
Thanks guys, but that doesn't restore any apps or their data.
I'll try the superoneclick.

My understanding is that you can unroot as needed, so I wouldn't consider rooting the S "destructive". There are instructions to be found easily that explain how to unroot your phone.
Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant -- disregard the above.
Can't you back up most stuff using MyBackup?

I think he means the wipe accompanying a bootloader unlock as being destructive.

use root toolbox its only 4 bucks so dont be cheap. then copy sdcard to computer , the root, copy sd card back and ur done
Ya, problem is that root toolbox requires root.

Did superoneclick work for you? I'm also looking for a way to root my phone without wiping it with the possibility of unrooting it again after.

Actually I found another program that works even better (imo). It's called RootUnlocker and it worked for both the Nexus S running 4.0.3 and the LG Optimus 2x running 2.2. However, it didn't work for my Acer a500 but there's currently no method to root 3.2 on it. You need to down grade first.

Edit: Correction, it's not called root unlocker, but rather Unlock Root (http://www.unlockroot.com).

[Q] Updating a rooted phone?

Hey.
My phone: Htc One X is rooted, and a software update just arrived, if i update, will i loose the root?
Or will it in worst chase get bricked?
I regulary update over the air.
Will this remove the root? and must i unlock bootloader and all that stuff i messed with over again if i need to root again?
I wouldn't do that if I were you, you could loss root and have to start all over, and maybe brick your phone, I would wait and see if a dev for this phone could make the update into a Rom, that would be the safe way to go
Sent from my HTC_A510c using XDA
Ok, but if i want to unroot, and i manage to unroot it, would it then be able to update? or will it then brick?
Cause i like to have my devices up to date.

Ok, what is the most simple way to unroot?
Is it just to delete SU folders and root folders? or must i do alot of CMD flashing?
Superone click, or flash a ruu wich is a completly stock Rom with stock recovery

So wait...let me get this straight. You got a $600 phone and decided to root it. You had no clue what you can and can't do with root up to and including an update. And you rooted your phone without knowing how to get back to stock. I am guessing you don't know how to get back to stock because you used a one click root method. WTF would you root $600 phone for if you had no clue what you were doing, and obviously incapable of reading how to reverse what you have done? This is the problem with one click root methods. You get no understanding of the Android system at all. Can I ask, what was the reason you decided to root??
i did not use oneclickroot, but the tool that xda has as an all in one tool for one x.
I rooted to get the fraps smiliar app screencast but it does not have support for tegra 3...
So yes, if i get it back to its original state, i will not attend any more root anymore.
So please, help me get it back to stock painless
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-hSF9oPgfY
Ok, so to get it back to the state when i got the phone and to be able to update painlessly, i have to flash it with a backup stock ROM?
Bump.

[Q] are these the current tools to root/unlock?

Got lucky ended up with a 1.85 firmware device from att refurbished yesterday. I just want to double check that I'm not missing anything.
So from stock I need to use the one click root below first, then after this use the supercid bl unlock method and I'm good? Then I'll be able to get twrp recovery on there and start flashing?
One click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
Supercid unlock bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672284
Is there any files or numbers I need to back up before doing anything?
Anything I need to avoid doing that would cause me to lose root permanently?
Use the manual root method, seems to work better for most, myself included.
Ya what he said. I tried to root my phone 4x using that method it did not work. Finally used another method I found on the web. Try this one. Www.onexroot.com. there you will find the tutorial of how to. Not the one click root method. But the other. Also tells u how to unlock bootloader. I had to open 2 windows for this. I also went to xda and take a look at this one " there both the same except you got the step by step video tutorial .

U have to do this step above in order to unlock your bootloader ...that's just the way at&t is...if you have telus or rogers then just unlock bootloadee via HTC dev. Do this and you will be good. Oh and a peace of advice don't do what I almost Did...DON'T FLASH AN INTERNATIONAL ROM!!!. just stay in the "At&t, rogers one xl, talar" or whatever its calld. You'll have a $700 paperweight

Thanks everyone, I'll use the suggested manual root, already saw some bad stories of people flashing international roms. I've got the att forum bookmarked so I won't accidentally flash an international rom.
I saw people talking about safely upgrading to 2.20 firmware to keep root, is there any reason to go to 2.20 if I plan on flashing cm10 or AOKP or is that just if I want the latest stock ROM with root?

Don't unless you like flashing a boot IMG every time before a Rom via fast boot or terminal emulator

[Q] Gaining root without wiping data?

Excuse me if this is a dumb question, but I have zero experience with HTC devices. I was trying to root my girlfriends sensation, but to my understanding, you have to unlock bootloader first, thus wiping everything on the phone. Now of course being an owner of a Motorola, I've never unlocked a bootloader lol. So my question is, is there any way to root this phone without unlocking the bootloader, and if not is there a utility like titanium backup to back up the data to be restored later?

use this guide to S-OFF and root the device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661631
it doesn't require htcdev unlock method
but backup everything from your sdcard
because it will erase everything
I saw that method, but the wire trick thing seems way too tricky. Is there an app to back everything up so I can just unlock the bootloader, similar to titanium backup, but for unrooted phones?

There is a tool for unrooted devices
Type and search for ultimate backup tool or something like that
I have never used it but it says that you can backup without root
