My wife accidently updated her phone to the newest OTA and I am wondering if I can still root my phone.

It's a Nexus, you can always root.

So I can root with the current root method with no problems?

Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.

Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)

ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..

the first time I used adb was yesterday to unlock my nexus s and it really wasnt too bad so you should be good

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.

Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here

Non-destructive root for ICS?

Anyone know of a non-destructive root method for ICS? My wife and I are swapping phones. Mine is rooted and all but hers isn't and I want to make a Titanium backup of all her stuff.
So far the only method I know of to root is via OEM unlock and flashing clockwork recovery. Then installing su via CWR. The OEM unlock erases everything.

I believe you can root it without unlocking the boot loader using SuperOneClick but I could be wrong. Either way worth a try

Move the TitaniumBackup folder to your PC before starting. Don't forget your pictures folder too!

just copy your entire SDcard to your computer , and then after unlocked bootloader copy it back

My understanding is that you can unroot as needed, so I wouldn't consider rooting the S "destructive". There are instructions to be found easily that explain how to unroot your phone.

I think he means the wipe accompanying a bootloader unlock as being destructive.

use root toolbox its only 4 bucks so dont be cheap. then copy sdcard to computer , the root, copy sd card back and ur done

Actually I found another program that works even better (imo). It's called RootUnlocker and it worked for both the Nexus S running 4.0.3 and the LG Optimus 2x running 2.2. However, it didn't work for my Acer a500 but there's currently no method to root 3.2 on it. You need to down grade first.

I think he's saying it because the recovery on this phone actually says if you have rooted the phone or not, if that's the case then yeah you lost your warranty like me

Correct, but I believe they would actually NEED the phone to tell this. So if you are rooted, the best thing to do would be to "lose" your phone....

Technically correct.
But Motorola / Verizon will never go through the trouble of proving an unroot for purposes of denying warranty.
The reason is because it is cheaper and faster to just process a warranty request, than to spend the time investigating reasons why they should deny a warranty.

There actually are two bits that gets set in the rom when you root the device that is displayed when you go into recovery. If the phone is currently rooted both bits show as true. Even if you unroot, one bit acts as a history bit so you get a 0 for current root and a 1 for previously rooted. The only way to clear the history bit is to reflash the stock rom with RSDLite. If you do this everything goes back to original state. I've personally done this and it works.

When to root...
I've been considering updating to JB but it is when to root is the question. Right now I'm rooted on stock ICS and it was a really simple process. However, I've read that after JB, in order to root you need to unlock the bootloader and install CWM. It is the bootloader unlocking that will void your warranty since you have to basically ask Motorola permission to do it.
I'm hoping that somehow someone will find a method of upgrading to JB and keeping root, or upgrading and getting root again without unlocking the bootloader. I've only had my XT925 for less than a week, so I'm not ready to void my warranty.

Woah woah, all you need it the OTA RootKeeper, and then you should be able to OTA to JB and keep root. You shouldn't have to mess with the bootloader at all, unless the 925 is significantly different from the 926, but I don't think it is.

Unfortunately, OTA Root Keeper did not keep the root after my JB upgrade.

So I'm running into difficulties updating to jellybean.
I'm rooted on stock 4.04,with the bootloader unlocked, and have vodoo ota installed.
When installing the update, it prompts me in cwm to install the untrusted package. So I click ok to continue.
A quarter way through it fails and reboots, then continues to reboot continously after it powers up to the home screen.
What am I doing wrong, what should I disable to install this ota update.

I have a developer xt926 razr hd that is unlocked at the bootloader. What do I need to complete a root?

Got it with running layers of exploits alternating them. Lost it upgrading a few times. Its fairly easy once you get use to the operating system.

New to Moto not rooting

Alright guys... Been reading a bunch on the rooting process for maxx HD. I have a few questions that are probably obvious but coming from HTC this device is totally different.
I am currently on stock 4.1.1 not rooted 926 non Dev. Phone came like this I didn't update. Now I have the 4.1.2 update waiting to install but I keep pushing it off because I would like to keep the ability to root.
Am I correct in assuming that if I take the new update it will eliminate the possibility of getting root until a new method is discovered?
Is it true that unlocking the boot loader has some negatives?
What would you recommend I do to keep my options open?

Unlocking boot loader voids your warranty. That's the only con in my book. The pro is device is rootable for life, without having to wait for hackers to find exploits.
If you want to keep your root (4.1.1 to 4.1.2) without unlocking boot loader, you should look into Voodoo OTA keeper in the store. It essentially lets you do the OTA update and keep your root.

It sounds to me as if the issue isn't so much the need for a new root method, but simply a new way to get the phone back to 4.04 so that it can be rooted using the same method. The utility everyone has been using to go back to 4.04 supposedly won't work after the update.

Are people generally thinking reverting back to 4.04 will be possible? Probably a hard question to answer I know.

OK, so if i use the utility to downgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4, then root and follow the process to protect root... would I need to upgrade back to 4.1.1 first and then to 4.1.2? Thanks again.

I postponed to temp unroot with voodoo, but want to make sure I will actually still have root permissions after taking the update. I have read/searched a ton (kw: OTA RAZR HD, etc.) but the only things I think I understand so far are ...

Yes that is the feeling I am getting as well. Gotta be on stock 4.1.1 (with all apps/bloat installed). Since the 4.1.2 OTA is out now, will our phones find the 4.1.1 update from 4.0.4?
I don't really care about going back to ICS, but I just don't want to take the update and paint myself in the corner. Likewise, I don't want to downgrade/root/protect and then attempt to upgrade but get stuck.
The other thing to keep in mind is without an unlocked bootloader, kernel controls, radios, etc can't be tweaked or changed anyway. I may just keep this thing stock. Other than debloating/tethering, it is starting to seem like rooting with a locked bootloader isn't gaining you much.
I'll probably just keep lurking until I understand the device better. Motorola really seems like they don't want to have this device unlocked.

which confirms no back to ICS (so use his win RAZR HD util 1.10 to revert and root first followed by voodoo install & temp unroot) then OTA 4.1.2, but only if 100% stock ROM, so best to do right after rooting and OTA to JB.
So I took the update to 4.1.2, and it worked! And I still have root!! I did temp unroot first, checking with root checker basic. My only fear was I had uninstalled some bloat: NFL, Audible, slacker, etc., but maybe o could've uninstalled those without tibu? (I know, freeze or move, I promise next time I will, but I lucked out this time! Thx moto/vzw.)

To me there isn't really indispensible value in rooting _unless_ you are going to use safe strap to install a custom ROM like batakang. (BTW: I am **super** grateful to Dan and Matt for providing the exploit &utility!!!). You can get WiFi tether w/o root now (see open garden or foxfi) and you can hide (disable) much bloat using stock. Of course tibu is a nice bonus that does require root, so each person will have to decide for themselves, but take heart that if you didn't get root you may not be missing much.

2. Temp Unroot
3. OTA Update to 4.1.1????
4. OTA Update to 4.1.2????
5. Restore Root

Yes essentially. Actually there was about a week in between, during which time I deleted some bloat, but don't do that. Do as I say, not as I do!
Process should be something like:
0. Back up everything!
1. Use @mattlgroff windows RAZR HD utility 1.10 to
(A) revert back to ICS and wipe everything
(B) get root via @djrbliss motofail2go debglug exploit & install su, busybox
(C) install voodoo ota root keeper & protect root
(D) install safe strap
2. Temp unroot
3. Get 6mb update (some say do between 1A &B, but I did it here and lycked out.
4. Get JB update
5. Now here check out matt's post on how to upgrade and keep root.

He's says to install ICS on one of safe straps slots. I skipped this step - think if you needed to you could do it later, but its a good idea b/c we know ICS is rootable, although if you loose root can't boot safe strap. Hm, have to read up on that.
6. Take latest 4.1.2 ota. You cannot ho back to ICS now unless you have it on safe strap.
7. Restore root with voodoo

HELP! 9.30.1 OTA (LOST ROOT) Is There a Different way to Gain Root Back?

Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.
I do not have an unlocked bootloader if that makes any difference.
Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible

I doubt there will be another exploit. This phone is a year old now and most devs are focusing on custom ROMs.

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Thanks for the info. I have just restored the backup stock rom and all is good. Installed Root Keeper anyway.

Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

im assuming your bootloader is unlocked?
if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.

I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

there is no need for a new exploit if you have an unlocked bootloader.
search for a flash-able SU zip or search razr forum for the rooting unlocked bootloader thread.
problem solved, cash payments preferred

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

Then are you sure you have an unlocked boot loader? If not, then you are hosed. We're just going by the fact that you posted " Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty".

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy

tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?
