Disable or toggle 4G? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Some areas with spotty 4G are problematic for me, and I'd like to just force 3G. I've searched but can't find a reliable method that works (apparently an old version of a phone info app worked, but not the current version). I'm running the latest CleanRom btw.

Settings <More... <Mobile Networks <Network Mode <Uncheck LTE/CDMA/EvDo and check off CDMA/EvDo auto

That option is not there for me. I have global, lte/cdma, gsm/umts.

I haven't been on clean ROM or a touch wiz ROM in a while, but as I remember they have the option for toggles in the drop down status bar. Toggling 4g/lte will also disable 4g and only search for a 3g signal

Quick panel settings in Cleanrom doesn't seem to have an option to add a 4g toggle. I have power toggles, which has that option, but the toggle doesn't actually seem to work...

I use an app called Phone Info by [email protected] Unfortunately it's no longer available on the Play Store but luckily someone posted the APK for it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36090884&postcount=14
I can confirm it works with stock rom and I'm currently on CM10.1 and it works with that as well. Once in the app go to Phone information then scroll down to Set Preferred Network Type and change it to CDMA auto. If you want 4G again just switch it back to LTE/CDMA auto.
Hope this works for you.

Well the new version of phone info is made by a different developer. The original version my [email protected] that is since removed from the app store works. If the apk that was posted doesn't work I can rip the apk off my phone when I get home tonight.

Thanks for the link to the old version of the app - looks like this is what I needed.

Okay, so after using the phone info app to turn off 4g, I haven't been able to get back 4g. I've tried turning it back on through the regular phone settings (rather than using the app, which is known not to work). Even in lte mode, 4g never returns. I also wiped cache and re flashed rpm/modem, but still stuck on 3g. Any ideas short of reverting to stock?

I'm having the same issue. I was able to use Phone info when running stock, but that's clearly not an option any more. Has anyone had success with any other apps? I used the RPM and modem suggested with CleanRom 6, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Flashed the RPM, then modem, then ROM.

Has any one tried to enable the hidden menu that has radio options?
This was in the gn2 forum but seems to work on the gs3.

Toggle options, including what cas239 said, are for AOSP roms like Clockwork Mod, Pacman, and AOSPA. Touchwiz roms do not have this option directly, only with Phone Info App. Although it seems only the older version has this option.

I've just been accessing the band selection menu and selecting gsm bands only. The menu is *#*#2263#*#*. This little "fix" doesn't hold after a reboot, fyi.
I also use the SMODA widget to shut off the data connection whenever I don't need it.
It sucks that mobile data is always on by default, with no stock option to shut it off, and that you can't select to only use 2g right out of the box.
I've seen some widgets that will turn 3G off/on... I wonder if those work on the captivate. I'll give it a try today.

I think you should be able to force it by going to *#*#4636*#*# and selecting GSM only, but that's such a hassle

The widget I have - which comes with Weather and Toggle Widget - does not work. It just brings up the wireless connections menu, but of course you can't turn it off from there.
I'm using smart bar, and it has a 3g-2g switch, but it isn't working. Since this functionality isn't working on my captivate, but worked on my other phones, I'd say it's been intentionally pushed out. If a hack can fix this, I'd love to learn about it.

After all the digging and searching around, I found two apps that work perfectly on Samsung Captivate for toggling mobile data (3G)
- Juicedefender (it has a widget you can use to toggle 3G quickly)
- SMODA Widget (It doesnt have too many 5 star ratings but works fine on my samsung captivate).
My phone is rooted but I believe it is not a requirement of either of the above apps. Hope this info is useful for other captivate owners.
Most of the other APN / 3G toggle apps on the market try to put a suffix on the APN names in settings. On the samsung captivate this works only with a restart/reboot. Meaning if you disable 3G using the app it would put a suffix like 'disabled' or something to the APN name. But your phone still has the 3G connection using the original APN settings. Only after you restart the phone does it see the 'disabled' APN name and is not able to use and hence no 3G. Vice versa when you want to enable 3G back - needs restart.
I dont know what process the above 2 apps use but they work instantly on my samsung captivate. No need to restart or click a bunch of other settings. They work perfectly and as simple as it should be.

It would be nice to disable 3g while at home or something , where the reception is a bit sketchy, but i could at least still use it for voice and texting , and use wifi for the internet and app stuff. Could help conserve battery life as well
I tried smoda and can confirm that it doesn't work for me. It disabled data completely as I cannot access the web.when I activated the widget. It would be nice if we could set this phone to 2g and if data speeds were above a certain threshold for a certain amount of time then we could have it switch to 3g.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yeah, I'd really just like to force the phone into EDGE mode when I'm not using it - updating weather and fetching e-mails are really not that data intensive and don't need the speed from the 3G connection. I'd like to have a widget that will turn the 3G back on when I'm on breaks or whatever and want to surf the web, watch a video on YouTube, whatever. I believe you can do this in the service menus, so you would think there would be a way to accomplish it with a widget - even if it were Galaxy S specific.
I'd pitch in 5 bucks towards a bounty towards such a widget if somebody could create one.
Juice defender does have the option to run the 3G radio on 15/1 cycles (off for 15 minutes, on for one) but I'm not sure how/if my apps that would use background data would sync up with that.
i9000 vs 1897 band settings?
Now that I've moved to the JH2 firmware I'm back to some of the AT&T crap, like hiding the band selection setting.
I'm thinking that the differences are in the Settings.apk.
Others have said that since it's a system app and signed, you can't just install it. So I'm wondering if it would be possible to pull the Settings.apk from the i9000 rom and stuff it using the update.zip method.
May have to do a backup and give it a shot.
Once that setting is available, you can use 2G 3G switcher from Market to bring up the UI and toggle between EDGE and HSDPA.
By keeping it on EDGE, my battery lasts alot longer...
If we could manage to enable it juice defender would switch back and forth automatically based on download speed and/or the screen being on/off, which be ideal.

What is my preferred network type?

So I've been trying to tweak my signal, go into dialer *#*#4636#*#*. Go all the way down, under preferred network type says unknown. Click on box and options are, wcdma preferred, GSM only, wcdma only, GSM auto prl, wcdma auto prl, GSM/wcdma auto prl , evdo only and i think 2 more. One of wich is unknown. Phone is rooted, stock rom. Any ideas? Live in Colorado

yea i was wondering the same thing. my evo is/was always on CDMA auto PRL, my ns4g is either on WCDMA or unknown. i cant help but think this has a lot to do with reception issues
Edit: Also switched cdma roaming to home only not automatic, not sure if auto made it keep switching to unknown type. Waited a cuple minutes after turning 4G off and speed went back up, might have needed a minute to fully switch back to 3G. Been messing with preferred type, but to make it stay have to push home cause back button keeps resetting to unknown type. Check speedtest.net app, shows better speed, but when i use the 4G and then turn off speeds are worse again. But then again you'd think cause i get a low 4G that my 3G would be faster, not so.

GSM auto (PRL)

WCDMA preferred

Gothis from Build.prop thread-use *#*#4636#*#* to access network type, wait for signal to turn green, select network type then quickly go down to refresh and then update. These are next to the smsc box. So far it seems to be sticking, not sure about after reboot.

None.
These were my steps
1. Go t system and make a few copies of build.prop.
2.went into copies of build.prop, ( main build .prop runs in background so it would let me alter).then added witch ever type i wanted , (like me i did ro.product.rat=WCDMA preferred) .
3. Made sure i saved my new copy.
4. Then i copied and pasted my new building.prop over to system. (Says there is already one there, i overwrite original.
5. Get out of whichever explorer used. And restart phone.
6. Then went to *#*#4636#*#* to get to preferred network type, then i select the option i chose to put in build.prop. ( that way they are the same.
6. After selecting type quickly got to refresh and update ( near the smsc box near the bottom.
You should notice the update tab stay dark.
Before i messed with build.prop and added what i wanted it would still change back. Now it atleast stays till next reboot.
Don't know if that helps.....

Didnt work. Switches back to WCDMA upon leaving the menu. Then shifts to unknown.
This phones radios need some serious updating...as well as some other problems.
Is yer rom odexed or deodexed, is it stock rom or different. I read somewhere that a deodexed rom allows a little more play as far as changing things, not sure though. It stays as long as you don't reboot after refresh and update, before it would reset regardless of reboot or not. Did you check build.prop in system folder to make sure it kept the add in? Mine wouldn't stay untill i copy and pasted over the original in system file, cause build.prop runs in the background. But there are so many things that work and won't work depending on yer rom and how it runs.

I have found that I make the wcdma change with *#*#4636#*#* the change shows. If i make shortcut in home screen for phone info the line still shoes gsm/cdma. I still have to change it there.

Are you on Verizon? I'm surprised you're even getting voice...
If you're using a GSM carrier other than ATT, you'll need to input the correct APN settings. Google ("your carrier" apn settings) and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Then go to Settings - Wireless and Networks - Mobile Networks - Access Point Names and create a new APN with your carrier's settings

This is strange. I'd probably suggest running the RUU to see if you get data back. This will obviously wipe the device, but will flash the exact same stock, unrooted ROM. I don't have any other good suggestions.
Gingerbread RUU
Froyo RUU

LTE OnOFF

Was wondering if anyone has experience using this to control their LTE. I assume by doing this there should be no long term issues switching between the settings?
I too would like to be able to toggle my LTE when I don't need it but remain on a TW stock ROM.

Unless Samsung changed Android's stock advanced radio info, then it should work fine. All it does is invoke what a dialer code does (*#*#4636#*#*). It doesn't work for all phones (manufacturers like to disable dialer code access).

That and the constant dialogue box popping up asking if you want to switch to global.
3 g is s more battery on my phone. You will laugh but it seems so. I would stay away from phone info unless you like Odin when you want to use 4g again. In my case the only time turning off 4g made a difference was in a fringe area. It is not a bionic or nexus. It has integrated 4g soc.
.
If on a ics rom you can use phone info that will take u to the menu someone already mentioned. Then click device info and check "cdma (auto prl)" to put the phone in 3g. To put it back into 4g goto "lte/cdma/evdo" from the same drop down menu.
If you are on a jellybean leak you use phone info to put the phone in 3g the same way. If you try and switch back to 4g with phone info nothing will happen. To get back into 4g you goto system settings-more settings-mobile networks-network mode and select cdma/lte/evdo.

Best Rom for Global Mode

Hey guys i was wondering if someone could help me for getting a rom that works right outta the box with global mode. I tried liquid smooth and Slim Beans, but i cant switch to GSM mode or Add apn's...i am using Synergy right now, but i dont even get a whole day on one charge.. so i was wondering if anyone know of any Rom that can automatically find the APN, or at least we can add them. and also allows to use GSM Mode
Thanks
I am in cairo egypt right now. When I got here I was running pacman rom. I did not get a signal. I was able to eventually get a signal by going into the phone hidden menu thru the app pimp my rom (same menu the app phone info used to go to) and switch my radio to gsm auto (prl). But this seemed a little spotty at times. While here I wanted to try MOAR rom, which is touchwiz based. I figured if I cannot activate that I can just restore my nandroid backup in twrp and be fine. However after installing MOAR and waiting about 90 seconds, my Verizon S3 activated fine. So in my recent experience I guess the easiest wayI can say to get Global mode working is any rom based off stock, or stock rom itself.
Edit - Forgot to mention that I did not change the sim card and I am connected to Vodafone. However this means any calls texts or data I use while here incur very expensive charges with verizon, so I am using wifi and my Google voice number with talkatone to not have to worry about this.

I did not use any apn software to get it to work on either rom. Also I do not believe it needs to be MOAR rom, any touchwiz based verizon rom should work, including synergy, beans or cleanrom. With the 4.1 jellybean update for verizon S3 i think the global mode was added by default, as it is a choice under settings->wireless and networks-> more settings, mobile networks, network mode
