Hi everyone,
My tablet has been disgustingly slow ever since I bought it last summer. I've probably installed 15 different roms and multiple kernels as well. I've mostly stuck with CleanROM, but it is just SOOOOOO slow. Even when I overclock to 1.7 Ghz, it often takes more than a second just to open the settings menu. After I use the tablet for a few hours since a reboot, any task takes a minimum of 2-3 seconds. Meaning if I click home it takes 2-3 seconds to go to home, if I open an app 2-3 seconds to open, etc. Compared to any other android device I've used, the tablet is about 10x slower.
It happens whether it is on a 100% fresh install, or days after a rom flash.
Is it possible that my tablet's CPU or RAM or something is actually damaged... or is this tablet just really slow?
Thanks
I think it would be safe to say something is not right w/ your hardware. Especially since you say it's happening with multiple ROMs. Personally, I've tried several ROMs and even at 1.3ghz, the tablet doesn't lag like what you're describing.
Your proccesor can be damaged. Soon your tablet will have totally bricked.

So my gf came across this on dvice.com. It is a basic, embeded linux system with a one second cold boot time. From power, to displaying real time data.
Could be something worth looking into. Our phone are obviously extremely complicated compared to this. BUT ever bit of optimization helps.
1 Second Boot
I remember reading that.
I found this much more interesting. While it will not help with our phones its nice to know it could be in any number of the remaining 15 or so Android devices headed to market.
Integrated circuits with no standby power could be in use by year's end
Yes, there is a lot of work going on in the linux world to reduce boot times. Fedora 11 will boot in 20s (from power on to firefox) bone stock with *common* hardware (i.e., not the latest and greatest, but not obsolete). Kinda interesting that W7 takes 30 seconds (and that will definitely be ONLY with the latest and fastest hardware).
Now this article is looking for a 1-second startup time.... this is certainly doable, BUT, you won't be getting the full android system up in that time.... that would be a very specialized startup routine that boots the kernel directly rather than running through TWO bootloaders (like most computers, including HTC dream/magic have, i.e., bios/radio make the IPL, then GRUB or whatever as SPL)... you additionally won't be loading a plethora of generalized drivers -- its going to be a very bare kernel without many capabilities, and it isn't going to give you a GUI, more likely just a serial console, might not even have a shell.
In terms of improving the boot performance of 'droid on current hardware, there is a lot of room in the IPL and SPL, on top of that, the kernel is a little chubby. Then finally, there is all the stuff written in Java.
Hey, at least it boots faster than a crackberry... what do they take, about 10 minutes?

I think about five. I have to configure them all the time at work. I usually put it down and go for a long walk
Ive had a winmo, blackberry and now android phone. My fiance has the Pre and while I love the system the pre takes the longest I have ever seen to boot up. Android I would say has the fastest bootup time depending what rom and customizations you have on it.
i got a nokia 5310 that boots in about 4-5 seconds, its pretty sexy.

only after a battery pull.
from power off/hibernate, they are back on within 10 seconds.
I know that the boot time in the demo was greatly aided by the simplicity of the design. However some of the optimizations they talk about, I believe could be used to make android that much better.
I no longer care how long it takes to reboot my mobile phone. Since I dumped that Windows Mobile pile of crap, I no longer have to reboot my phone to my a call.
Bliss.
I can live with 45 seconds ;-)
Anybody who thinks it needs improvement should get a winmo device for a few days...
Smiffy.
lol I've had both winmo and berry phones. Its not that any of the optimization we are doing is "needed" But why not have it boot faster? If we can make it faster, better, stronger.... Even the 6 million dollar man needs a cell phone

Yeah I had a Qtek 8310 once running WinMo...great at first but soon it started doing the typical things we know Windows to do...f*ck up for no reason
That doesn't count since it is only powering up the screen -- the rest of it is still actually running.
Mind you, a 10 second time to power up the screen is pathetic...

anyone who used to own a blackberry knows how often you have to do a battery pull, instead of force close, it was force freeze
My tab seems to literally only want to do one thing at a time pretty much. For it being a quad core it seems a bit ridiculous for it to freeze up and start throwing the wait or close crap anytime an app or the market is downloading something. Another thing is with the dock, I've noticed it seems that the touch pad is really slow and laggy after waking the tab from sleep. It is fine again after a reboot but once it goes to sleep you wake it up and the problem is back, what's strange is its only slow while on the home screen inside apps it works as normal. Another thing with the dock is it appears that it stops charging the tab after the screen is turned off as in the light on the power button goes out but turns back on and continues to charge if you wake it back up. I do not have it unlocked but it is rooted and EZoverclock is installed running it at 1ghz,1.3ghz and 1.5ghz. Still has the stock rom .29. Also it was doing these things before root and OC. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing these symptoms. Thanks for reading.

I never had these problems... It may be the method you rooted it. Try sparkyroot.. I remeber my motorola defy was completely unusable after rooting with an app.
I find my Desire S better capable of downloading webpages in the background while browsing another than the TF300T does.
My TF300T is still unrooted.
I just believe that the quadcore is not put to good use (read: the software is not optimised for it). It feels almost like that hyperthreading hype from Intel many years ago. That design was a complete bust, but they only would admit that when the real multi core processors arrived.
I have the same problem. Just have to do one thing or it is laggy. Just shame for quade to be that slow! I also dont have root.
Same problem with my TF300T
When I am downloading something in the background and try opening another app or browse something, I end up with the Wait messages and my tab almost freezes. I was really surprised that a quad core tablet has such poor performance.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 does a better job of downloading stuff in the background.

Yeah my GS2 from att screams I love my phone. What's weird is I actually had the prime but had to return it due to too many defects but it never had any problems multitasking at all. You could have ten downloads running while playing a game without any lag it was a huge difference. I guess ASUS like many other companies have just not got the quality products they used too. Its to bad really. These tablets had a lot of potential. Maybe I should have gotten the Toshiba excite with the tegra instead its only $50 difference. Or perhaps this tab will get fixed in the future? Maybe we should bug the hell out of them until they fix it this is such BS to be misled like this. A quadcore should perform as such and be able to "MULTI" task with its "MULTI" Core CPU.

I did use the sparkyroot method and as my op says it has been like this since taken out of the box before it was rooted. I actually rooted it to remove some of the bloatware and OC it to see if it could perform better. My HP Touchpad with Cyanogen performed better than this paper weight.
The reason for the lag when downloading is because the tegra 3 only had single channel memory. This means all the apps being downloaded fill up the channel even though there are 4 cores. Its really a shame cuz the iPad has quad channel memory and most other chips have dual channel memory. Plus having more cores means more memory consumption.

I'm having the same problem. I had 21 apps waiting to be updated and the table was completely useless during this period. My a500 performed much better and I sold it to get this device. Looking for an optimized stock rom, but it looks like I will be returning this to amazon. I expected so much more from the tegra 3. Will wait on a better device.

What are your download speeds?
I connected my tab today to a 25mbs down/up wifi, and I opened MC3 to download the game content. I noticed that I would freeze the download from time to time, sometimes holding there for about 10 secs. I think the main problem here is the speed at which the tablet can write on disk, I have never had any problems with download freezes or lags before on my lousy 3mbs connection at home.
The files were downloading so fast that the tab didn't have time to correctly write them and had to pause the download. This is just a hypothesis, I didn't get the chance to try again. Anyone that has access to a high speed internet connection and a slow speed connection could try this and verify it. Maybe download a torrent and throttle down your down speed to see if you still get the same lags and freezes as you would on your normal speed.
Here's a picture of a cf bench I did on my tab you can see that the write speed is at 511, it seems slow ppl using the prime have reported 800+ speeds
Also check out this post and this other thread
EDIT:
More pics added of bench test using androbench

I use to download youtube videos with Tubemate. When there were multiple downloads, my tab slowed down like anything. I just popped in a 32gb card and chaged the download folder to sd card. Now, with 5 downloads also, no problem with slowing down. The internal memory's RW speed seems to be less i think.
Hi all...first time poster, long time reader. (Mostly because someone has usually solved my problem for me six months in advance.)
My Inspire has been rebooting at random for about the last six months. The rate varies from once every couple of days to once every couple of hourse. Most of the existing answers are "replace the battery." I think that makes sense in cases where phones reboot while under strain (watching a video, during a call, etc.) because higher current draw would pull down voltage if a battery is failing. Not in my case, though. About 80% of the time that I notice a reboot, the phone is either in a pocket or on the desk.
For a few days I thought that I had solved it by removing the Facebook app. I had noticed a correlation between using Facebook at the phone restarting, and not using Facebook really did seem to make a difference for about a week. (Upon further investigation, that seems to hold across different ROMS. This has been happening with the stock rom, Ice Cold Sandwitch, and JellyTime.) But it isn't 100% better. I currently get about one reset every two days that I notice, and probably more that I don't notice.
That leaves me wondering, what could be going on? Is my hardware borked? Should I try flashing a different radio? I have had this phone for about 22 months and it would be nice to hold onto it a little while longer. Otherwise it has been a reasonably decent device.

Tim, random reboots can occur due to lack of memory. See if your internal memory is almost full. In that case, try deleting some apps or sending a couple to he sdcard. Take into consideration, that not all apps work fine from the sdcard, so just send the ones you like less...BTW, are you rooted or just stock?

That's an explanation I had not found. Internal storage looks OK in my case, with 701MB currently available out of 1.13GB. If it matters, the SD card currently shows 3.86GB avaliable out of 7.39GB. (I have tried with and without the SD card, and it doesn't seem to matter.) Maybe I should increase the free memory setting?
To answer your question, the phone is currently rooted and running IceColdSandwich 8.8 AOKP. If anything it reboots less frequently in the current configuration than it did on the stock ROM. I have not tried any Jellybean ROMs for more than a day at a time, so I'm not sure if that would be better.

Sounds to me like your hardware is bad. I have had my Inspire 4g for two years and the only issues I have had was maybe three apps force closing. I have never had the phone its self freeze or reboot. I have tried all kinds of ROMS and right now I have 4 regulars I stay with and alternated monthly. I Use Energy, Revolution, Smart Droid Red venom edition, and JB 10.1. All those ROMS are stable and cause no issues as you have described.
So from a tech view if I had your issues and it happens with all ROMS then that leaves only the hardware to be at fault.
Hey guys, I bought my A9 yesterday, it would be a great phone, but scrolling is laggy. It can even stutter for a bit in Settings, not even mentioning some websites and apps. And multitasking doesn't work at all sometimes. I just went to the phone's settings from a very simple website with no pictures for 10 seconds, and it reloaded. Sometimes it works better.
It must be the optimization right? I'm already running the latest firmware available for my phone, but it was released in, like February. Comparing to my previous SD800 phone, it opens up apps the same time etc, but these two bugs ruin the user experience for me, I don't think that the SoC is that much weaker. Is there a faster, previous firmware to use? I immediately updated after setting up the phone. And since I've read many feedbacks that said there aren't any lags, I thought something is wrong on my side.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi man, restart thé phone recover 90% problem
But when I have the same lag, I use "high performance MOD" in devlopper setting for 5 minute and the lag gone.
Thanks, but is this tolerable with a high price phone like this? I mean, it shouldn't act this way. When I use the phone from idle, it opens up things pretty fast, without a lag. But when I'm using it as I should (not killing apps, etc), it goes a bit crazy, even the lock screen animation lags.

I have a LYF Wind 7 with a 1.3 GhZ Quad core snapdragon 210 and 2 GB RAM. The phone was snappy and slick when I got it. But now after 1.5 years, it has become so laggy that it's become impossible to use it. Whenever I open dialler, it takes 5-10 seconds. The back button responds 10 seconds later while inside WhatsApp or any other app. Even after factory reset, it runs fast for a day, but returns to being laggy. The firmware is the latest version. Tried force stopping all apps with greenify but nothing works. Internal memory is 3 GB free.
Now my confession is, I have overused the phone. I have often used the phone's hotspot with Jio as my primary data connection. Now is it possible that a phone's hardware can degrade this way? I'm planning to buy the Zenfone Max Pro M1 but will it get laggy like this phone if I overuse it by using it as hotspot?
