Hello guys. I am using my nexus 4 with phonak audeo which are 32ohm headphones and they are really silent with it. I assume it is caused by low quality dać in n4 right and fact that n4 can't supply enough mV for them? Will the headphone amplifier help here? What if amp is 20Hz-20kHz and phonaks are 5Hz-17kHz? Will it "cut" the low tones somehow? Will the quality be better?
Do you recommend any amp for it?
Thanks in advance!
Or maybe there is any other method to make it louder?
Nexus 4 and Tapatalk 2
They sound okay with my Grados, but yeah, volume can be an issue. However, if you want to try an amp, see if you can get a Fiio E5, only around $20 and very small. No sense bulking your pockets up with a $250 amp.

So the low volume is caused by n4 or those 32ohmz?

The fact that alsa drivers can up the n4s volume temporarily would indicate the n4 is capable of louder volume (not just modified equalizer levels).. Just have to wait for a kernel dev to implant a more permanent solution.. An amp like the recommended fiios could help in the mean time..

Well. Maybe it's your songs.
At home I use my AKG K240 MKII (55 Ohms) and I think they're fine. Not exactly "loud", but enjoyable. Some songs are really, really silent. However, those also are with my in-ears, which have a low impedance.
You could try to amplify your audio files, which works without quality-loss to a certain degree.

Honestly, try to find the E5. I've used it, it's good, it's very small, it's aluminium, it's cheap so if you break it or lose it, no big loss. It's also one of the few sub-$50 small amps that you can use while charging (charging the amp, I mean, mini-USB) without any appreciable noise. You can't go wrong.
Mine is a couple of years old, but if the still make them the same, there is a hidden/accidental feature, too: if you put the bass boost switch in BETWEEN 'off' and 'on' you get a very nice warm sound.
Here's a link to the e5

I guess it depends what you want. If you want a mic incorporated into the amp itself, sure, I guess. But as far as I'm concerned, it's bulkier and doesn't look as good as the E5. Additionally, there's this, from a head-fi review:
It is not sonically as clear as the popular E5 of the same price bracket, nor is it superior in an audiophile sense.

If you are looking for this as just an amp than look elsewhere. For the price, it's amp is a 7/10. Very average, sonically disapointing at times but with a nice bass that can sometimes make up for it.

Thanks for you time! Actualy I found few reviews and some of them tell good things about it: "So now how do they sound? Well, Quite good actually! The sound is on the same level of quality as the e6 with about the same amount of gain when comparing them at full volume on the different sources I used. "
I just hope it won't add anything bad^^
I bought one. Will post my impressions if you want
Just so I'm clear, I was talking about the e02i above. The E5 and E6 are functionally pretty much the same.

Just to clarify one thing.
It is not just the impedance that decides if speakers is easy to drive. The magnet, the coil and of course the impedance all makes difference.

No, absolutely. I've used some high-impedance Senns that were very easy to drive. But it's pretty easy to point someone to an amp when they say they find the volume low.
I use this. Never looked back. Picked up a couple spare batteries and charger on ebay for like $10 so when I travel I have hours and hours of use. It's larger than the E5/E6 amps but far superior in sound quality and amplification. I let my brother listen to my ATMH50s with this amp at half volume and my old S2 phone and he said it sounded like he was in a club. Yeah, I'm a bass head but the amp is highly reviewed for all types of listening.

I'm using my Nexus 4 with a pair of 32ohm Denon AHD-1100s and it sounds fantastic.
I'm using PlayerPro with FLAC files, with the added DSP pack, and then I just have a totally flat EQ and bump up the gain on the preamp.
Music sounds awesome on the Nexus 4. Really open, wide soundscapes, and the bass doesn't muddy or distort. Sounds far less 'coloured' than with my old S2 with the same set up.

I know there are a couple threads throughout xda about which are the best headphones but I figured I'd ask in my own thread cuz my priorities may be different than others. If this should be in Q&A, the mods can you please move it?
I had a pair of ibeats headphones that came with the Rezound. They broke so Verizon sent me a brand new pair in the retail box that you would get at Target or Best Buy. There are a little bit different than the first ones. Anyways, the right ear bud is losing its sound compared to the left one so I need a new pair.
I LOVED the sound from beats. I listen to a lot of rap so I like deep bass. Are there any headphones that sound just as nice or better at a lower or equal price? I really want the studios or pros but it's too much for me to spend right now.
I've seen people mention the s4i's. Do they have deep bass like the beats?
P. S. I also didn't care for the way the ibeats felt in my ear. They weren't comfortable. So something with a nice fit for long periods would be a plus.

There's nothing that comes to mind that compares to the bass from Beats by Dre.
I personally don't have the S4i because those are meant to be used with Apple devices. I do on the other hand have the S4a and they don't fill the bottom end as much for songs with deep bass, but they are crisp and clear. Very evenly toned.
If you want good bass, check out the IE monitors that I mentioned in the other thread.

I'd take Sennheiser over Beats or Bose any day of the week.
Audio Technica ATH-M50's like these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._ATH_M50_Professional_Closed_Back_Studio.html the Sony MDR-V6 or a pair of Sennhaiser HD 280 PROs, HD 448s or higher, depending on your budget.
Edit: Since you want bass, I know the 280 PROs are considered to be pretty deep sounding but I don't know about the rest. I have HD 448s and love them but I like flat EQ, so they probably aren't for you. You should read reviews on audiophile sites to see which model matches your preferences.
I bought some beats tour headphones a while back and I am unhappy with how things ended up. My wife couldn't find her gym headphones so she grabbed my beats and now she won't give them back or share them with me. Always connected to her phone. I could justify buying another pair but don't want to drop the money on a second pair at the moment. Great headphones though.

You get better sound out of cans. Are you fixed on earbuds or will over the ear do? You mentioned studios, so I assume you're ok with over the ear. Because the driver is bigger, the sound is much richer dollar-for-dollar.
Glaucoma Cat had some solid recommendations. If you're looking to spend a little less, the zx-600's are pretty good. You can find them on sale for around 50.
Can anyone recommend earphones with a good handsfree system that works? I tried the S4a, and while it sounds great, I hate the one button control. And is there one that can allow me to launch google voice actions?

I have a Sony SBH20, its great. You can use your own headphones with it, although their is nothing wrong with the ones that come with it just a very short cable. It also has a NFC chip in it, so no fussing about with pairing, just tap the phone to the device and it will turn on Bluetooth, and pair immediately. Before I had the Sony MW600 which was also good but the SBH20 has a much MUCH better clip and can actually be attached to your belt, pocket etc, I have it clipped to either my front inside jacket pocket or to my front right pants pocket if I am using a longer pair of headphones. It feels incredibly sturdy, it feels like it will outlive my phone.
Yes those are the tones. I have the tones + or 730 model are these the type your looking for? And battery life is awesome I am charging every three days or so and I watch a lot of Netflix using them and the normal games and talking.

I really like my Tones (730's). Very convenient, great battery life, comfortable, and the controls are easy to reach.
But with that said I mainly listen to podcasts. For music they are mediocre at best, but I would guess most bluetooth headsets are (unless you want to drop a bunch of coin on the Sennheisers - and even then, it's still bluetooth).
I was looking at the tones, but the neckband thing might get annoying..
I play golf so not sure if it might get in the way or maybe come off during my swing... Is there anyway to remove the neckband thing and still work?

I play golf 2. And while I don't listen to music on the golf course, I just put mine on & hit a few balls into my practice net and it is not a problem. It fits under your collar and doesn't really move around much in the swing.
I have the Plantronic BackBeat Go. Very light weight, solid product. It's an in-ear style so it blocks out a lot of outside noise which is great but just pay attention while waking across a street.

They're ok, but as I said, compared to good wired buds (akg, senn, shure, etc.) they are mediocre at best. But for fifty bucks I wasn't expecting great sound quality.
I prefer the extended highs setting, and wished it didn't always reset to the heavy bass setting at power on.
I really like my Motorola S10-HD headset... It pairs quickly, and eliminates the cords. I find that the headset needs to be at almost full volume most of the time, though, as it is a little quiet. This may be a design choice to keep the battery life high...

My biggest issue was comfort and all that i tried hurt my ears after a short amount of time. These earbuds i can wear for hours even at the gym and are extremely comfortable and come with a built in mic.
However if you have a pair you like already without a mic and need one try this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390534336745?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I already recommended it to someone else for a different issue, but it had a mic built into it and you can use it as a Bluetooth headset, only issue is that it need to be close to your mouth to work, so you either have to hold it close to clip it on your collar
Hello everyone. I currently have the Nexus 4 and wanted to know how the audio compares on the Nexus 5 to the Nexus 4. One problem I've had with the Nexus 4 is that audio through wired headphones is too low. I'm a little hard of hearing and the volume through the headphone jack has always been an issue on the N4 for me. When I use the same headphones on a different phone (tried on galaxy s4 and iPhone) the volume is much higher. Can anyone tell me how the volume on the N5 compares. Is it higher than the N4?

If volumes important I'd hold off and see what the kernel devs come up with. As it stands with no audio mods I can turn the volume all the way up and keep the headphones in. It's loud enough for me but if your hearing impaired it's another story. Compared to other phones I've owned it's pretty low(for now). Some apps like rocket player pro already have a preamp that you can enable and it helps but until the gain can be adjusted further it might not be enough. More gain = more distortion but it's a trade off I'd be willing to make. With all that said I will tell you as far as music clarity goes out of the box this is a great phone. No EQs enabled and it sounds rad. Turn on the EQ and I'm very happy so far.
The headphone volume on the nexus 5 is a joke. Can you fix it? Of course. But wait, it distorts and adds a ton of hiss. I don't know what Google was thinking when they made it that low. Compared to my iphone 5s, my nexus 5 would be at 100% when my iphone would be at 50%. I promptly sent it back for this very reason
does the 4.4.2 update fix the low sound or not? mine is stock low but if i use one of those volume boost, its pretty good but ofcourse distorts ot 100%loudness, goes with the territory i guess
I'm coming from the Galaxy S3. The volume is lower than other phones I've used but I found it more than adequate for all purposes. I find myself pumping it to 100% when I need to get a bit of beat going in my ears and it is enough. I don't think I can listen to 100% volume with the google music app for longer than 2-3min and I do like loud music.
FWIW, with the S3 i never had it above 75% since it was way too loud.

Hmm....that's very odd. Which music player are you using? Did you go into the Viper settings and activate it? It's made a huge difference in sound volume and quality for me. Previous to installing it my sweets spot for volume was around 80%. Post installation and set up it's now at about 50-60%. You have to play around with the settings tho. If you google Viper4android settings you will find some very useful profiles.
If you're using the top volume levels with in ears then its no wonder it sounds too quiet for you now. Nothing will bring that hearing range back once its lost, there's a reason for the warning.
Cranking the volume to compensate for loud environments is just about the worst thing you can do to your ears. It doesn't cancel it out it adds it together.

You don't have to be sorry. It's already been shown in the Anand review that the N5 has less max volume output then current flagships besides the G2.
However I still think with IEMs the max volume is louder then people should be listening to. Either you're Klipsch model has an unusually high impedance rating, no passive noise cancellation benefits or you're ears have just adjusted to higher volume levels. Just checked and the Klipsch S4 is rated at a fairly low impedance of 18 OHM.
This is going to be subjective of course but with Shure 115 in ears above 75% volume is painful since 4.4.2 These were advertised at the time as passive noise cancellation however and are rated at 16 OHM.

You don't have to be sorry. It's already been shown in the Anand review that the N5 has less max volume output then current flagships besides the G2.

The ones I use are noise isolating which is really nice and one of the reasons I bought them. I do tend to listen to music a bit on the louder side; I like the punch of the bass with my ear buds. I'm guess my ears have adjusted to a little bit higher of a listening area but still a lot of devices sound significantly louder than the nexus 5

I recently bought and tried the MH-EX300AP headset, first of all they worked :good: as for sound quality they're quite standard, just like the ones you'd get with older Xperia's (e.g. my WT19i headset quality was same). But they're cheap which is good.
The MH750 seems a lot better, it is more expensive, so may be better. Although I haven't tried them for myself.

I would like to provide my comparison between the mh750 and the ex300ap. (note: my phone is a HTC one X, previous phone was a SONY Xperia P with which i got the mh750. Later bought another pair to compare with the ex300ap, both of em purchased from ebay.in.
Bass on the mh750 is more mostly because of the fact that there is no leakage of air between the driver and the ear drums once inserted (this is the reason why both the mh750 and the mh1 is so painful in the ear. Especially the vacuum effect while pulling out). The ex300 on the other hand has a very different design. The way it enters the ear and the way it remains there is something to praise. I didnt know inears can be comfortable too until i tried these. The vacuum effect is nil, insertion is easy and it stays put without causing any irritation. Although i would advice to use a smaller earbud (take from your previous inear sets maybe, as extra ear buds arent provided with this). This helps to insert it much deeper. And unlike the mh750, inserting it deeper isnt painful as the air gets out to maintain normal pressure, same goes for taking it out, no more POPing when pulling it out. Volume is a bit less (vs mh750), but not too less either. Am using it on my HTC One X and i cant reach max volume without the risk of experiencing pain, so its good enough. Overall signature of the sound is kinda dull (although not as dull as the pathetic sounding mh750). Clarity and mids are more pronounced in the ex300 so definitely its an upgrade in sound 'quality' but this doesnt mean its perfect. Better than mh750 yes.... but sound quality isnt something to write home about. I have a sennheiser HD202 so i know the meaning of clarity. Using the ex300 on flat eq is not advisable. Rather apply a U shape eq or 'rock' eq to get a much much better experience (keep the mids untouched if possible, basically make the U shape 'above' the base frequency line on the equalizer, not through it). The ex300 is more flexible with equalizers than mh750 which no matter how you mess with it the output just doesn't sound pleasing. The thing that makes the ex300 stand out is its wider soundstage. I have used all stock earbuds of all the manufacturers (sony, HTC, samsung, LG, nokia) and these are the best in this aspect. The sound will keep getting better till it reaches full burn in. I just recently bought the ex300ap. Build quality wise the plug on the ex300 is much better while the cable is thicker on the mh750. Quality of cable on the ex300 isnt bad but can be snapped easily by the looks of it. Cant expect any better for the price. The larger 13.5mm driver does make a difference as the sound seems more fuller, kinda like am listening to a over ear headphone. There is no distortion on high volume or bass. Has the ability to extend very deep (as far as 15hz). Bigger driver also gives a very obvious advantage. That is if the earbud does get a bit loose, the sound doesnt go too quiet or too low on the bass in an instant like other headsets. This keeps us from fidgeting with the earphone too much to get that 'perfect' fix or sound every time you move your head. So basically am very happy with it.
Mind you, am only making these comparisons with stock earphones only because these are very good value for money and are more useful (having mic and button as an added extra). Very cheap price just makes it impossible to complain about anything at all. Each of the above can be had for much less than 10$ on ebay (Ebay india cost for ex300ap is 300-500 INR, the mh750 200-400 INR). THAT cheap.
If i am to rate the two then here goes,
Bass: 4 star to the mh750/ 3.5 star to the ex300
Mids: 2.5 vs 3
Treble: 1.5 vs 2.5.
Am basing the above rating to my sennheiser HD202 which is my current best for the type of music i prefer. Usually all those R&B, HipHop, pop, rock, country, bollywood (basically everything that doesnt have mad men shouting in it like those heavy metal kinds).
I buyed ex300ap from Ebay..the voice quality was pathetic. The pairs you are getting in 500 from ebay whether it is mh750 or ex300ap,they are not original.they are oem product.

First of all am not stupid. I made it 100% sure to know its not oem and later after receiving I compared it to a friend's ex 300ap that came with his Z and they are cent per cent same. Same plastic cover, same design, same cable, same plug, same material, original tag with 16 digit serial numbers n all.
And as for the sound I did say it's not good enough without eq but compared to mh 750 it's a mile ahead in sound quality and light years ahead in comfort. I can't even tell its inside my ears.
My point is, if you want to decide between the mh750 and ex300ap.... Go for the latter.

Oh and please note the fact that the kind of sound am enjoying now has lots of factors working upon it such as,
1. HTC Beats Audio (my phone is HTC One X endevoru)
2. 'Nrg player' with following settings,
Bass boost: 10
Treble boost: 2
Reverbration: 7
Pre Amp limit: 8%
Custom Equalizer with; 14-10-0-0-2-7-7-5-8-11 (from top to bottom i.e low to high frequency, hence first 14 is for 32hz and last 11 is for 16k hz).
Anyone with HOX should try above settings on this headphone, I bet you won't listen to any other (first of all because of the tonality and second of all the COMFORT).
---------- Post added at 01:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:11 PM ----------
Why not power amp you may ask but I just don't like the tonality of poweramp. Nrg player reverbration makes music very comfortable to listen to. Poweramp although is best to squeeze every single drop of a device's potential but I would rather use it with music systems and external speakers, not inears. Stereo separation sucks in PowerAmp (it's surround effect thing is pathetic ).
