ZTE Flash - Android General

I got this phone a month back and I really love this phone as it meets my requirements. It has awesome screen, perfect blacks, and high contrast. With camera, it’s awesome as it has face detection. The picture quality and video quality are amazing, even in low light. The touch screen is very responsive. The battery life is better than expected and call quality is great. Honestly this is one of the best phones in the market and it is cheap and reasonable.

[INFO]HTC Sensation review round-up

Hello, I've had a look at the reviews of major sites out there and these are my conclusions so I thought I'd share with you.
Engadget praises the design, build quality and form-factor of the phone along with the exceptional battery life and the performance of the camera.
Below are quotes from Engadget's review:
[+] The Sensation is a simple and untainted joy in the hand.
[+] Folks that don't care to recharge their phone every single night can buy the Sensation safe in the knowledge that it'll last for a good couple of days of casual use.
[+] In our review of the Galaxy S II, its pixel density left a little something to be desired. The Sensation gives us that extra flourish with a 960 x 540 resolution.
[+] Calls on the Sensation were for the most part clear and competently handled.
[+] As to aural performance, the loudspeaker on the back does a decent job and output to headphones is particularly pleasing.
[+] Image quality is usually high on the Sensation, though some software irregularities do undermine the evident strength of the hardware on board.
[+] We must commend HTC for the intelligently designed dual LED flash.
[+] Video recording on the Sensation is simply effortless. The camcorder's ability to keep up with motion on screen is markedly superior to what we're used to as well.
[+] App launching in general is nearly instantaneous.
Engadget's score for the Sensation is 8/10, but they have put some pretty dumb statements on the negatives:
Display isn't as Super as on Galaxy S II
Sense 3.0 changes are mostly cosmetic
Locked bootloader
Sure, the screen isn't of the same quality as the one on the GS2, and they've found it to be poorer than other SLCD displays, but hey, there are a lot of pixels in there!
Their statement on Sense 3.0 is true, but isn't HTC Sense already the best overlay for Android? Now it got even better, but not as much as they would want. I can't really understand how this could be a bad thing... And the locked bootloader is a sorted out problem after HTC's announcements.
Now let's see the main points of SlashGear about the Sensation:
[+] The qHD screen on the Sensation is bright and crisp, the extra pixels leaving graphics and text smooth and very readable.
[+] What the raw figures don’t communicate is how responsive the Sensation feels in daily use. Side-by-side with the Galaxy S II, it’s hard to tell the difference.
[+] HTC’s shooter marks a significant step up in quality. No more drab colors or middling detail; no more murky indoor shots. Close-ups are clear and crisp.
[+] We had no issues with phone performance on the Sensation, with both parties sounding clear. Speaker performance is loud but prone to distortion at top volume.
[+] With medium to heavy usage throughout the day, and by the evening the handset was still showing around quarter of its charge.
[+] HTC Sense feels more thought-out and complete than TouchWiz, and the out-of-the-box experience with the Sensation is more polished than that of the GSII.
So, that's what SlashGear thinks about the Sensation. They didn't actually say anything really negative about the phone and I'm starting to think whether Engadget's reports on the screen quality are a bit exaggerated...
Another review here from Pocket-lint, and their thoughts on our beloved phone:
[+] Although it is a large device, it doesn’t feel too big in the hand.
[+] HTC have chosen to have the back cover wrap around the edges meet the display edges, so you still get that seamless look and feel.
[+] The Sensation's screen, apart from the high resolution, it also offers plenty of brightness, nice bright whites and vibrant colours.
[+] One new major upgrade is the lockscreen. Previously we’ve seen a lockscreen offering a little more functionality, but HTC have really gone to town on it
[+] Fire up the browser and you’ve really got space to roam around and take in websites.
[+] Video capture keeps up with the best offering Full HD video. 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30fps as 3gp. The results are pretty good too, with plenty of detail.
[+] The stills are nice, perhaps a little contrasty and over-saturated although the limitations of having a small sensor are apparent: it won’t replace your digital camera.
[+] We had no problems with call quality on the HTC Sensation.
[+] The battery didn’t perform as badly as we’d expected and we did get through most of the (working) day on a single charge
Pocket-lint's review wasn't that much detailed but it was good overall. They didn't note anything bad about the display, too. In fact they said the colours were vibrant and the brightness was very good. They seem satisfied with the camera, the new Sense 3.0, sound and call quality, the battery life and well, with the phone as a whole.
The last review I sum-up here is from TechRadar and it was pretty good too. Let's not forget that they had the HTC Desire as the best phone in their list last year (now that honor has been given to the Galaxy S II). Anyways, let me dive into the review and present you the main points:
[+] The design of the HTC Sensation is a little bit larger than its rivals, in that it comes in at 11.3mm thick, but still feeling comfortable in the hand.
[+] At medium brightness you can make out what's on the screen in direct sunlight but compare it to the iPhone 4 or the Galaxy S II and it's miles behind.
[+] The resolution is definitely a step forward, and the sharpness of the text is impressive.
[+] The Sense 3.0 interface is not as snappy as the Samsung Galaxy S2, but it's unflappable and we found very little slowdown throughout.
[+] Call quality on the HTC Sensation seems to be poorer than many other phones.
[+] The signal quality was excellent on the whole for the HTC Sensation, with up to 50% more signal reported in known weak spots.
[+] We've always been fans of the HTC keyboard, and we found keyboard accuracy much higher than that on the Samsung Galaxy S2.
[+] The qHD resolution makes web pages look as crisp as anything else on the market at the moment, and the pictures and video all pops with slick ease.
[+] The Flash integration is sensational (we're sorry) as videos will stream without a judder and will instantly leap to full screen.
[+] The sheer speed, functionality and slickness of the browser on the HTC Sensation means web browsing is a really great experience.
[+] Sonically, HTC has done well again with the Sensation.
[+] Video performance is perfectly respectable, although certainly not market leading.
[+] Take the HTC Sensation into the light, not even direct sunlight, and you'll have to instantly turn up the brightness as high as it will go, which washes out the picture.
[+] The Sensation's battery life, to us, seems woeful and not up to scratch. We're talking dead by 8PM with no push email, minimal Wi-Fi and about 30 mins of music and video at the most.
On the other hand, TechRadar has many complaints about the Sensation. I'll start with the battery life, and say that it has been proved by the members of the forum here that the battery is indeed very well-performing on the Sensation, so I think there was something really wrong with the configuration on their review unit. They also seem to be bashing the brightness of the screen. However, they didn't mention anything about the colors. Another thing they found to be poor was the call quality, as they report that on a noisy environment they could be barely heard by the other part and communication was impossible. As much as they complain about the call quality, they are very happy with the reception, though. Among the things they liked are the increased resolution, the keyboard, the performance and the sound experience of the Sensation.
I hope you liked my round-up!
This is the greatest review
Thanks
this is a nice post & all, but seriously, there's already a post for reviews (& your roundup) that you could have put this in. Why create another post?

Which is the opposite of Engadget who said "In voice calls, the other party heard us even on a busy street where we had our own struggles keeping up with what they were saying to us". Combined with the contrast on battery life between the reviews I really do think TechRadar had a dodgy phone.

Thanks, and well, I posted it in a new thread because it is pretty lengthy for a reply. The purpose was to compare and constrast the different reviews available, so we can see the opinion of different people, summarized in one place.
The only thing I'm worried about in the Sensation is the screen. Next to the GS2 it looks really washed out. As for the performance, everyone said it is very snappy and fast as you can see.

Of course it looks washed out next to the GSII. taken from the GSII review from engadget:
...4.3-inch display here doesn't use one single backlight as LCD screens do, and instead only illuminates the pixels that are needed to actively display content. This is the reason why it can generate truer blacks than any backlit panel...

taken from the OLED wiki:
Wider viewing angles & improved brightness: OLEDs can enable a greater artificial contrast ratio (both dynamic range and static, measured in purely dark conditions) and viewing angle compared to LCDs because OLED pixels directly emit light. OLED pixel colours appear correct and unshifted, even as the viewing angle approaches 90° from normal.

AMOLED seems to just be the better screen technology. As long as LCDs are going off of one backlight, they're going to look washed out when viewing from odd angles. The only reason HTC is putting in SLCD over AMOLED is due to shortages.

Yeah, I believe that too, and it's not like TechRadar has something with HTC (they had the desire 1st best phone for more than a year). They have no reason to complain more than they should, but I think we hit a bad reviewer who had a problematic device

Actually, I have an AMOLED Desire and the screen's colours are very vivid, and the blacks are the deepest I've ever seen, they are perfect. I just can't stand the PenTile Matrix (it is really really annoying, you have to live it to believe it) and the fact I can't read the phone's screen outdoors. Now with the S-AMOLED Plus these problems are solved, but I'd rather opt-in for a more established technology this time (my second smartphone) and of course the better resolution is nice to have too.
I hope there won't be shortages on the upcoming ultra-high resolution and with superb contrast Toshiba screens later this year.

yeah it was stated in the engadget review that they fixed that. I've never seen why the PenTile Matrix is bad. care to point me to some articles that show it? I'd really like to see. My buddy had the original Galaxy S & I thought the screen looked great, but didn't actually sit there with it for a long time to notice anything wrong.

That's my personal experience and I have to say that sharpness is a thing that you will miss on a PenTile Matrix display. PenTile Matrix displays actually have ~30% (not very sure) less sub-pixels pixels than normal RGB displays and that is because each pixel has 2 sub-pixels instead of 3 (half the pixels have green and blue subpixels and half the others have green and red).

Old owners of DHD and now Sensation: please help me before buying

Ok I have a DHD right now and if there are things I hate these are:
-Weak speaker (ringtones)
-Poor 8mp camera (the Arc I had was wayyyy better)
-Very average screen under sunlight
I know the SGS2 has none of those weakness but I preffer HTC build quality, so that's why I am asking for people who used to have a DHD and now Sensation:
-Is the speaker more powerfull? (slightly or much more?)
-Same question for screen under sunlight
-Same question for the camera
I have asked these questions many times but nobody answers directly or in a objective way
Without having a DHD directly next to me, I'd couldn't truthfully say which was better in regard to your issues. However:
The Sensation's speaker is both loud and clearly, both in calls or when watching a video or listening to music.
The screen isn't much good under sunlight, but then, if you want a good screen under sunlight, get the SGS2. However, Sensation's screen is qHD, which is fantastic!
I've found the camera to be normal HTC; good on it's own, but put it next to a dedicated camera or an Arc and it pales to these.
But the Sensation is a lot lot better than the DHD Screen res, build quality, size (Sensation feels small), battery cover
The screen viewing angles are the same too?
I hope a root will be found very soon

Pretty much. Slightly worse than the DHD, but it doesn't really bother me.
As I said, if you want a phone with an excellent screen, colour wise, get the SGS2. It's miles ahead contrast, colour and viewing angles wise.
Thanks!
But the negatives of the SGS2 are:
-way less devs for a good roms experience
-Yellow tint on the left of the screen though not big deal
-Battery is like loto, some have a very bad battery and other exellent
-Plastic cheap vs good old aluminium body
And of course Sense 3.0 is missing!!
None device is perfect and both have exellent features, it's the first time in my life I don't know what to buy, I guess I will try both in the shop before buying
I'm about to upgrade from DHD to sensation, mainly because I love my DHD but Skype quite a bit and miss not having a front facing camera.
What I don't get is the comments about screen visibility in sunlight. Is the sgs2 a lot better than the galaxy s? I bought my girlfriend a galaxy s about 6 months ago and find my DHD to he better in sunlight, mainly because I can see 'through' the LCD if you know what I mean.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
My DHD works well under 10am sun but not under the 2pm sun, it's barely readable, so taking photos, reading easily sms or playing with DHD in summer time is a weakness on DHD and probably Sensation

I have both the phone:
The screens cannot be compared due to the fact the Sensation got a resolution near by apple retina dislays and it is the top resolution android smatphone on the market. Under the sunlight the screen is good, far away the dhd.
Speaker sound is good, I can hear it in the car without wearing headphone. Some Sensation got problems of sound, not mine.
Both the phone got 8mp camera. The one on the sensation is far better the dhd one's. Fast shots, good autofocus, bright colours. HTC might have worked a lot on it.
Hope this "personal" experience could help you...

How do you use the phone???
Parachute???
The poor viewing angles on the Arc were a pain in the a**
When put on table and you wana pick up a call for exemple the colors are so washed up that you can barely see who's calling!!
I hope Sensation has at least better viewin angles than Arc

Actually the Motorola Atrix has the top resolution on Android its only a 4" screen and has the same resolution as the Sensation so will look sharper being on a smaller screen.
I agree with your other remarks though having owned a DHD at one point, the screen side its not that big a problem the viewing angles when I compare it to my GS2 I can see the screen is worse and lacks the wow factor of the GS2 screen but it wouldn't put me off getting the Sensation and lets be honest who doesn't hold there phone straight on when using it.
If I am honest when I held both phones outside in the direct sun there wasn't a huge difference the GS2 was better but not by much, the easy solution for the OP would be go in a phone shop and try one out then compare it to his DHD.
Motorola Atrix has pentile so some people will not like the screen.

So the feeling in hand of the Sensation is lighter than DHD or still heavy?
The SGS2 is so light I don't know if it's good apart when doing some jogging
Gsm Arena and other reviews said the screen is dull under sunlight while SGS2 is exellent, you are saying the difference is just small...
I will try the Sensation speaker for sure before buying, the DHD is frustrating!
If only Sensation had root it would make my choice much easier
From the battle given by GSM Arena:
Well, we're sure you've already picked your favorite, but we'll have a few of our usual parting words anyway.
The HTC Sensation is a very good phone all round and the tests we ran gave us no reason to doubt it. But it's by no means perfect. The death grip issue is one thing (check our our two tests), but the battery life failed to impress too when it came to web browsing.
The camera is good, though there are better, and the screen fails to reach to the top of mobile screen goodness. The performance benchmarks did well to demonstrate the power of the 1.2GHz dual-core chipset, but the browser definitely needs more work. The GPS performance left us with nothing to complain though.
Here are a few bullet points that cover the impressions each test left us.
•Good screen, but viewing angle and contrast are not the best
•Still camera does well, though 8MP perfection is out of reach
•Video camera is okay for casual users and records great audio, videophiles will find some faults
•Performance is generally good
•Web browser needs to be optimized
•Good loudspeaker performance
•Better output audio quality than the other two
•Good battery life for watching videos, but web browsing drains it too fast
•Excellent GPS performancе
If you still like the Sensation you shouldn't let comparisons get to you. And we're not implying either that one has to be an HTC fan to buy it. We'll say it again, it's a good-looking phone with plenty to like. It's just that there're some excellent alternatives for your hard earned cash. Now, who would say no to that?

Sensation is definitely lighter, and also smaller than the DHD due to 16:9 aspect ratio.

I have death grip but only when there is a very low signal.
I have tried the Sensation in a shop...
As an HTC user since N1 I was exepecting a wonderfull phone, but:
-It's ugly due to the new plastic border around the screen
-It's too long due to 16/9 screen
-The fonts, widgets and icons are too small due to the new resolution
-The speaker is slightly better than DHD but still way too low
So buying an Android with the look of a nokia 5800...NO THANKS!
I will but the SGS2 without remorses and will see how the N3 will look like
Very deceived by the Sensation

It's the looong 16/9 physical screen and its border that I hated, remembers me of 5800.
The screen horizontal is too tiny compared to other 4.3'' screens, even the Arc is better

Camera Quality

Hi everyone,
So I've been looking at the mate 8 as my next purchase, and Some reviews state the camera quality isn't good due to software/firmware issues. Other reviews state the camera quality is really good. I was wondering what owners opinions are? If it does have exposure and focus issues, are they sorted if you use a different camera app? I don't know if different apps can alter issues that might be related to firmware?
Thanks
Ian
I wouldn't consider myself a power user but I'm very happy with the camera so far. I would mostly be taking pictures of friends and family etc and quality is just fine for me
I'm the same, mainly I'll be taking pictures of the family and scenery, that kinda thing. I'm not what you'd call a professional photographer by any means. But it is said the best camera you have is the one on you at the time, so I just want to make sure it's a relatively good one
Thanks
Ian
Camera was bad with the first update
But with latest update it became better
But if you are seeking for great camera go for lg or sam
If you wanna a power horse phablet go for mate 8
That's the thing, I've had both Samsung and LG phones before, and while the cameras were good I wasn't keen on the phones themselves. I've had a G3, a Note 4, an S6 and a Oneplus One. I was half considering a Oneplus 2, but only because of the price. £249 is cheap for a high spec phone. I'm not keen on the nexus line of phones either. I know they are popular, and you probably think I'm mad. But they are just a bog standard android phone. If I'm paying more than £400 for a phone I want it to do more than the straight forward stuff, straight out the box. Other wise id just get an iPhone. Half the stuff on the Mate 8 I'll probably never use I admit, but the fact its there is what I like. Does that make sense?
Has anybody tried a different camera app from the play store to see if that improves the pictures, or isn't it as simple as that? I'm not sure how apps, firmware, API's and hardware all tie in together, so I apologise in advance if that was a stupid question.
Thanks
Ian
The camera is a so and so in my eyes. It's ok, but very soft, in daytime but I wouldn't pick it to take pictures of kids indoor. Right now the best all around camera I have is the Nexus 6P, mostly because it will do really good indoors and most of my pics are indoors. I read that there will be a upgrade for the camera after 162 firmwarewize. Otherwise, it's a really good phone. Apps doesn't do better than stock camera.
Skickat från min HUAWEI NXT-L29 via Tapatalk
The camera is fine. It's not the best camera out there in terms of image quality when you zoom in on the pictures but it does the job. It has good colors and good exposure. It's fun to shoot with. I think quality should be able to be fixed with software update. I find that some indoor night shots almost have the same amount of detail as some of the ones shoot in daylight. The processing seems to heavy creating artefacts in images taken even in daylight.
The Mate 8 is pretty much the perfect phone in every way except the camera is not top notch. Excellent screen that is more clear and has better contrast than the screen on my iPhone 6S Plus. The battery life is the best you can get on any phone now. The build quality is fantastic. Audio quality in headphones is top notch, best I've every heard in any phone the dynamic range and clarity is amazing. Even better than my Meizu Pro 5 that has an internal DAC and amplifiers in it. It is super fast and has a very smooth and responsive UI.
Thank you for your input. You guys have confirmed the fact that the mate 8 will be my next phone just got to wait for it to come into stock again now!
Thanks
Ian

This phone has been....one of the best buys I ever had.

I mean, the phones I had before weren't bad, they simply just...couldn't really stand up to the Moto X Play. And they were high end phones too! Can you imagine?
I had the M8 before and then the Nexus 6. (more phones before those 2 but irrelevant)
Sure, the M8 had incredible speakers and a crystal clear display, same with the nexus 6. M8 had a nice build as well. But what always had me a little annoyed is the sense of security they lacked in battery.
Oh suuure, I will be the first to admit the 615 isn't too swell in day to day performance in Android itself, but it plays emulated games perfectly, plays games perfectly, does everything I need it to do, and the performance issues are highly overblown sometimes. 99% of the time it works just as well as any other high end phone.
What you get in return is decent speakers, decent screen, sturdy build, and an AMAZING battery life. This is the first phone where I think: Don't need a powerbank for this monster.
The SD card slot is very useful too, definitely and the camera? It's decent! Not bad, not amazing, just decent, but then we're talking about a midranger here. If Motorola had just put a Snapdragon 800 in here it would be the absolute perfect phone, but it's not a big deal either way. Marshmallow made big improvements in performance too.
Tell me, why do you love this phone?

Battery performance for this phone is its core strength. For camera, I won't say it's decent. In daylight, it's amazing for the detail you can get. Yeah in low light noise creeps in but that's mainly due to high resolution of the sensor. The display is very bright at highest point and even at lowest it's much but bright. Yeah its back levels won't match an amoled display but it's an lcd after all. Sound quality on earphones is much much better for me.
The performance is great for me although there are little micro lags but that's nothing to worry about at least for me. The 6.0.1 files have leaked and I am going to flash them today as improvements have been reported.

Biggest thing motorola could have done to drasticaly improve the phone is to put the Adreno 415 or 420 in the chipset to give it graphics grunt. They probably didnt because it would undercut the Style and Pure editions.
Apart from the somewhat weak graphics this phone is an absolute gem for the money

I totally agreed! With all my Nexus phone prior this one I was pissed that the battery life was sooo horrible. I am a light user for the screen time (no games or long time videos watching) and I couldn't make it for 2 days without recharging. So I was looking this time for a phone with a really good battery time, a decent camera, a stock or close to stock firmware and something around $400 CDN. This phone is what I was looking for and even better then I expected. I like it so much that I even won a Galaxy 6 Edge+ in December and sold it because I was very satisfied with my Moto X Play. I Also just can't stand Touch Wiz user interface plus that $850 was really welcome in my pocket!
Lol. This is what we were all telling you both in the performance thread. It's a great phone once you know what to expect from it. Very solid performer

Dude you're fine. Soft bricks are always salvageable.

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Huawei P10 Plus come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The quality of video is quite good. It doesn't match up with modern mirrorless cameras, but Leica optics does hand a great value to video quality. This is exactly why I'm so frustrated on the software. Camera on itself is awesome and the quality is top notch, yet deficiency of the camera application renders camera almost useless. Except for the selfie, monochrome and pro-mode parts (which are photography modes) Too bad, video is the worst part of the camera. Only in perfect conditions it will perform quite well, but at least here in Finland Sun doesn't shine around the clock. When using artificial lighting, shutter flickering happens about 80% of time because one can not lock down the shutter speed to match frequency of said lighting. And on normal-to-low light situations, noise and artifacts destroys the video quality to a point you don't ever want to use the phone for video.
video quality is very bad. to the point that i dont like shooting with it anymore. camera is bad as well. it is very frustrating. i swapped out my iphone 6s for this huawei p10 more because i was attracted with the leica branding. and i am regretting it.. it has been 3 months already since i bought this. 2 months of selling it and no body is buying this thing
