[Q] Sensation XE possible backlight softwareerror? - HTC Sensation

Hi,
I am new to this forum.
Few days back, I bought a sensation XE on ebay where the seller claims to have run an update and after that, the display backlight wouldn't go on again.
I thought that he screwed up somewhere and I could just flash a lower version and everything would be fine.
But once I got it and entered the bootloader (default one, no root it seems), the light wouldn't go on either. Somewhere I read that this is an indicator that there is a hardware problem which is causing the error since the bootloader is kind of software independant.
Is that right? I just wanted to make sure, before I digg into either way.
Or is it possible that it realy is a software error?
Any advice would be greatly apprechiated
Kindest Regards
Rene

Question is: can this be a software error that could have come from something gone wrong while updating or does this show that it has to be a hardware error?
What I said was that when I enter the bootloader, the backlight isn't on either.
bootloader shows

Noone knows the answer or noone understands the question?

maybe I should rerephrase the question:
If there is no backlight shining in bootloader, can this be caused by a firmware error or does this HAVE to be a hardware error?

Try flashing a ruu.. Check ruu info guide by kgs1992 in sensation general section.. There instructions to find correct ruu and flashing it were given
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium

okay I did the flash and it was completed without an error. but still the screen has no light.
But (I am not sure whether this happened before) the buttons at the bottom sometimes are iluminated.
So this is a hardware error? or can it still be a software error?
thanks

Some questions, is your phone a standard DESIRE S, S-ON, with standard HBOOT etc?
I'd wait for someone with more Android experience than myself to confirm this, but, I believe that you should attempt to re-flash your original ROM (RUU). Which you should hopefully find somewhere in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506

Thanks for the reply.
It's S-ON, this is untouched so I guess standard HBOOT?
Is flash(ing) ROM can be done even phone is not rooted?
Also, been searching around and found this (almost) same problem encountered, regarding "No image...", but I'm hesitant coz now I have to start from scratch again after that(?). :/

You should be able to flash an official HTC ROM, without ROOT. Although if you are operator locked ie T-Mobile/Vodafone etc you may have to install one of their ROMS. Although I'm a little out of my depth/comfort zone with all this...
I may be well off the mark here, but, have you tried it, without your SD card inserted? give it a go?
What you found is related to something different. and related to image files stored on your SD card used for updating....which is what made me make the above suggestion.
After a factory reset you will have to start a fresh anyway.
Ohh. So it's not related.
My phone looks like this :

Did you try it without an SD as suggested?
The IMAGE errors I think (but could be wrong) are as a result of FASTBOOT auto checking for the existence of update files on your SD and simply not finding any!
Does it say Checking.....
If you select FASTBOOT then REBOOT what happens? Phone hangs? with what screen?
Hopefully someone else will add some advice soon?

Yes, I did. It's same.
If I put the SD in it, when chosing FASTBOOT the errors looks like the attachment in this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703761

Doing FASTBOOT then REBOOT shuts down the phone then restarts it and hangs at the green HTC logo.
I really wish someone can help me.
BTW, regarding the ROM's you provided above, what do you suggest is the one for me? I really don;t have any idea. I'm from Asia (Philippines) and phone is not locked by a mobile carrier.

I've found a very similar sounding problem experienced by another user in this thread
I'm afraid that I don't know which of those ROMS would be best for you, I imagine one of the HTC ones, sorry....
Ensure that you continue to keep charging your device. Now, I'm grasping at straws now, but have you tried the above without a SIM inserted?
Same problem
I had the same problem much times!
I had to Factory Reset my phone every time it freezes!
When i did a factory reset, it was all ok until it appeared again
The only solution i found was to factory reset the phone..

Yes, I also did that. Unfortunate, nothing happens, if it does not froze it boots to that green HTC logo and stops there.
I guess the only solution is to bring this to the store where I purchased it.

If someone can advise which ROM would be the best for you to select then I'd possibly try that before returning it?
Good luck...
I've seen another user @Skanob also from the Phillipines, if you look at the details within his signature in the following post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14748687&postcount=4 you should see details of the RUU ROM that you can/should try to flash.
I am actually downloading it now.
Hope this will fix it.
This will not void the warranty, right? Coz I'm gonna bring the phone to the service center later (it's 12.30AM here atm).

I'll be perfectly honest, I don't know if this voids warranty....sorry..
Ultimately, you're only putting back the same ROM as the phone has on it originally, but, bear in mind that in the other thread I posted above, re-flashing the original ROM didn't resolve the issue, so if there's any doubt that this might void the warranty - don't do it!

Flashing RUU won't void the warranty. How long are you waiting on the htc logo screen? It can take a while after factory reset...
It might be that some files were corrupted so flashing RUU should help. If not, connect your device to computer and see what logcat is showing

I can't do factory reset or access recovery. At some point I have successfully ran RUU, problem is I'm on UK O2 but being complete idiot I installed 3's ROM. Even the 3's ROM don't boot up. I can't run RUU anymore, because every time RUU is trying to reboot into boot loader it get stuck.
So,
I got phone from O2 that has a 3 logo (its stuck on it),
I have S-OFF phone so it probably voided the warranty.
Can anyone think of any solution please?
Thanks in advance for your help guys.
If you need more info please let me know.

There are at least 5 similar topics, one is mine (same thing happened to me). Use search.
Does adb works yor you ?
yeap I have also created a topic on this.
I had to send mine back to HTC to fix.
What I would like to know is, if you send it back to HTC, would they notice the s-off and charge you money?
What ROMs were you all on? I got a similar problem on stock ROM after XTC Clip S-OFF, but a battery pull fixed it. I guess this only happens with S-OFF stock ROMs, so switch to avoid this.

Try flashing the eng hboot by PB88IMG method, and then try and run the correct RUU. That's my best idea.

I have just booked my phone for repair.. I'm gonna act stupid. I'll tell them that my friend installed something on my phone etc. Probably won't work... I will let you know what they said.
HTC gave me some terms and conditions to read and one of the says:

In-Warranty but which needs to be repaired including the following or similar
reasons shall be classified as a NonWarranty chargeable Repair Service:

Wrong.
Its not illegal but you have probably invalidated your warranty. The thing is HTC have to bother to check your phone for custom software and a lot of the time they do.
Quick update.
I have sent my phone to HTC for repair under warranty yesterday. I have checked the status today, and it says "We are repairing your phone" So it looks like HTC don't check if the phone was rooted or have S-OFF
I've done the same i tried to flash a ruu image that was the wrong one i followed a thread on how to get s-on again just so i knew i could. I got s-on but now my phone is stuck on bootloader and is not recognised by the pc Please let me know how you get on and if you get charged as i will be doing the same i think.

YOUR PHONE IS NOT BRICKED. The term bricked means that your phone is a useful as a brick, i.e. if you can get into HBOOT, it's not bricked.
Gotta ask though, why did you not use the Hack Kit as its the only reliable method to root, my advice to you sir is when this gets cleared up READ AND EDUCATE YOURSELF before you really do brick your phone.
If you have a SDcard reader, pop out the SDcard and place one of the PD98IMG stock ROMs on your SDcard. From here you can reboot into HBOOT with the sdcard in your phone and HBOOT should pick up the PD98IMG and flash a working stock ROM. From here, you can root with the Hack Kit...
This will help you, read it and do what the stock ROM option...if you can get into HBOOT
I have tried doing that, it says loading image, then parsing, then goes back to the hboot screen, it doesn't say press volume up to update or anything else as I have read in many other posts. Am I doing something wrong? As far as not using the hack kit, I didn't really stumble on that until after it was to late, sure wish I had found it in the first place. Guess if I could just get it back to factory, I would accept that doing this isn't for me and not mess with it again. I am good at following directions, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

is the file named exactly "PD98IMG.zip"..you may also want to check the hide extension option to be sure its not hiding the .zip because if it is and you renamed it to "PD98IMG.zip" with the hide extension on, the phone will read it as "PD98IMG.zip.zip" and you would get that error.
haha and yeah man, we've all been there...I don't want to discourage you man, rooting is such an awesome experience and the hack kit is a pretty straight forward process, if you do the research and take the time to understand what you're doing, but lets see if we can help you out here first. I had the same issue you're having when I tried to flash a radio (same PD98IMG method you're trying to use) and it turned out to be the hide extension issue.
I had also verified that as well, I went under tools, folder options, view tab, scrolled down to hide extensions for known file types and unchecked... And, everything was correct, just verified to be on the safe side.

hmm, so its named PD98IMG.zip caps and everything? If its not working you m ay have to get a stock RUU and run it through fastboot..
This is why you should educate yourself first. You do not need to unlock the bootloader from the HTC dev site. Now you could flash the the stock ruu from the PC and then use the hack kit. Check the stickies in the Inspire general section for more help.

Dalton, lock your bootloader again. Boot into fastboot and plug the phone. You will see fastboot usb at the top. Then plug your phone and open cmd session. Once there type fastboot oem relock. Once that is done, try flashing the .exe file in the HTC site (original GB update), making sure that you have HTC Sync installed.
If that fails, then I would try using the HACK Kit to gain S-OFF and root. You will then be able to revert to stock or flash a custom rom...
Had a similar problem when using aahk my own fault and I took care of it. Long winded, so short of it, are you trying to install through
1. hboot or 2. on the computer using HTC rom update?
I ended up trying 2. But ended up using aahk to finish.
HTC update errored out and the recovery portion would not work, just in a boot loop on HTC logo
This was good news as aahk could take over on USB during that HTC green letters white background.
I'd suggest reading the effen manual run the tool to get it up and going, figure out what you want to do. I've used it to return to stock with s off before go back into roms.
So look at those options know what you want and then power on the phone USB connected and during HTC screen enter your number the kit should take over and give you what you asked it.
That should give you a working rom image.

Glad you have it back....yeah you'd better read and make sure what are about to do it and of course what risks are involved before making a move....
Dalton,
I would suggest following glevitan's and willm's assertion of getting s-off and root to use custom roms. Custom roms are WAY better than anything HTC has to offer, and much easier to install, if you have an issue warranty wise, you can always return to stock. Just make sure you know how to flash correctly, search for it and you will find easy instructions, and if memory serves, a youtube video which helped me greatly.

Have u tried to enter into recovery/fastboot?
If able to enter into fastboot, give us the details u see there, or a screenshot would be good as well if you are unsure what detail is to give.
What was your friend updating? firmware? if you are on a custom rom and tried to update the official firmware then it is a no no no no bad boy no u shouldnt have done that.
So on the phone :
Saga PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOO-6.98.200 (PG8810000)
RADIO-3831.19.00.110
eMMC-boot

Try a full wipe and see if it helps.
If it doesnt help i would suggest u to flash a new rom. either way u will loss ur datas.
* make a nandroid backup before proceeding.

But I cant acess to the SD card. In fact I cant acess to the recovery mode! Do there and the only thing that shows is the red triangle... I all ready did a golden card but nothing....
Not sure if it's you posting or some one with the same issue, but check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920636
read the 2nd post and try it out. if it is indeed a fried emmc chip there are a few way(not sure 1 or 2 out there) to salvage ur phone, or u could just replace the chip, there is a post some where in general section.
I think I guessed the problem.
Someone wanted to update ENG S-Off Desire S (with old ENG bootloader) to official ICS RUU. The update "completed successfully", but since the bootloader didn't let the update overwrite itself - the official update can't work, because it expects /system/lib partition that doesn't exist on old ENG bootloader.
The solution is to flash new ENG bootloader (7.xxxx), found in Development section, and then run official RUU again. It'll work and the phone will work again too.
By the way, the solution can be easily found if searching - I already remember such a thread. "Red triangle" is a stock recovery, search could have easily told you that. And goldcard is useless by itself, it's needed for flashing RUU.
And if the above doesn't work, because RUU gets stuck updating - address the "fried eMMC" post.
You cant go wrong with seniors like Jack_R1 watching over desire s forum. :fly away:

[Q] Sensation XE Dark Screen

I need help with this. Yesterday, the screen of my HTC Sensation Xe began to fade, not due brightness settings but out of itself. I immediately thought a reboot would fix my issue so I went and rebooted my phone. Turning it back on resulted in the screen being nearly all blacked out.
When holding the phone under a bright lamp I can see a little bit of the screen so I have verified it is still working but the screen stays dark. I have tried nearly anything, boot screen (not visible enough), keeping the battery out a while, keep the phone turned off a while, nothing seems to work.
I have had this phone for around 10 months now, I recently flashed the latest paranoidandroid rom. My phone is S-OFF as well.
I have searched every forum for a solution but I can't find any clear info.
I hope it is the battery causing this issue so I don't have to send my phone back to HTC.
If you have any ideas or solutions, please share them with me.
Thanks in advance.
Bump, I really need help with this.
Unfortunately it looks like a fault with the screen, it didn't sound software related at all. Hopefully I'm wrong but I have had similar problems with dark screens in the past and it always meant screen replacement. Good luck hope you get it sorted

Yes it sounds like the screen It's self unfortunately.you can try replacing yourself if you don't want to send it in. They have some how to videos on you tube that seem pretty good. But either way it sounds like it will need repair . I wish you the best! Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I have given up searching for a solution for this and the only thing left is getting it repaired. I have a big problem though. My phone still boots the paranoidandroid rom which you can see if you keep the phone under a lamp or something, this will most likely remove my warranty if they see I am using a custom rom right? I am out of ideas right now..
Bump

How would I if I can not see anything on the sreen? CWM background is so dark. And besides that I haven't been able to find my stock RUU yet.
Change your CID to HTC__001, then flash a WWE RUU. Then S-ON by doing fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 in the bootloader.

Thanks for taking the time to help me. Could you explain it a little better or is there a guide for this? Sorry for bothering you with my questions.

It should be a superCID thread in development, except instead of changing to 11111111, change it to HTC__001.

Hm, I just read that in order to use superCID I have to use ADB, my phone isn't set to usb debugging so it's pretty much impossible I guess..
No more ideas?

No, if you do it in the bootloader, if it says FASTBOOT you can still do it.
