New Samsung Galaxy S4 - General Questions and Answers

Hi!
All speculations please into this thread.
I heard that the display will be a big jump compared to S3

I read apparently the s4 is more about software not so much about hardware. Yeah right more like more plastic and more profit.
I bought s1, s2, s3 paid enough for plastic but no more. Enough is enough. Look at htc now that's what I build quality, design.

Samsung Galaxy S4 will be most powerful phone till date because it is to come with an 1.8 GHz octa (8) core Exynos 5410 processor, PowerVR SGX 544 MP graphics processor, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB/32 GB inbuilt memory and will have a 5 inch display with 1920x1080p resolution. In terms of camera too the phone is well armed; it will come with a big 21 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Read more here:

Who needs 8 cores just to make a call, send a text or play temple run?

Yeah that sounds good but the moment they wrap it with plastic it sucks. It loses al that appeal basically Samsung are taking us for mugs. Expect us to pay 500+ for plastic!! Still usin amoled everyone knows LCD is better.
If this is how Samsung treat their customers then they will lose their appeal just like the iPhone is.

Lol. Come on man Samsung is taking us for mugs, surely they can provide better build quality. Is it too much to expect when you pay over £500 for phone.

More like 2.1mp front facing camera and 13mp for the main. Get your facts right bro.. and who said it's the most powerful? Because of that octa crap? It "may" be the highest clocked till date but that doesn't mean it's the most powerful. Snapdragon 600 is way better than that octa crap..

Not to mention the US is going to get a crappy dumbed down version...

It's not octa core, it's a 2 quad core, one for low power usage such as calling and one for high power usage for gaming and such.

Another gimmicky tweak like smart stay for S3. Never used smart stay it never worked as it was meant to and was excessive battery consumer.
Again my point for not buying S4 simple cheap plastic look, feel and quality. SLCD 3 is far superior then amoled screen.

More powerful Exynos chipset coming soon from Samsung

Samsung have the luxury of making their own chips and they are quick to put out new and better versions of them. The Exynos chipset, which debuted with the Samsung Galaxy S II at a 'mere' 1.2GHz is getting a 1.5GHz version, called the Exynos 4212.
Samsung also has a pair of high-end mobile cameras headed for the production line. One is a 16MP main shooter with a back illuminated sensor for better low-light performance (expected to ship in November) and the other is a 1.2MP module with [email protected] capture capabilities for front-facing cameras.
We can't quite make out the Google-translated press release but it seems the front facing camera will have 1/8.2 sensor (that sounds pretty small, but we'll see) and the ISO of the main shooter goes up to 1,600.
Going back to Exynos, it's built using the 32nm process and was designed with 3D performance in mind. Gameloft is apparently showing interest and will offer several titles to put the new SoC to good work.
The Korea-bound Galaxy S II LTE and Galaxy S II HD LTE will sport Exynos chipsets with the CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, which makes them the most likely candidates for being the first phones with the new chipset.
Samsung already has a 1.4GHz version of Exynos that's powering the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tab 7.7, but there's no info what kind of change in performance we can expect in the 3D department (beyond the obvious gain from the faster clock speed).

I think this might mean I'll give the Nexus Prime a miss and wait for the Galaxy S III. Probably jizz in my pants when I hold it.
Should be epic, loving the Samsung processors. iPhone5 should be feeling scared. Hopefully ICS will be a hit as well.

I believe this is a simple die shrink from 45 to 32nm. So it still has the Mali-400 GPU but clocked at 400MHz instead of 267MHz (i e 50% clock increase). The very subtle name change from Exynos 4210 to Exynos 4212 almost confirms this.
Until the Mali-400 can compete with the SGX543MP2 in GLBenchmark at the same resolution, I'm going to wait for a Kal-El phone.

And it's driving over twice the resolution. The GPU in the iPhone 5 is going to blow away the competition, as it's at a lower resolution compared to the iPad 2. I'm actually kind of jealous. I refuse to use a device with a lower performing GPU than an Apple product! Hope the GPU in the Kal-El will actually be competitive.

No it is not; both were running the benchmarks at 1280x720. Kal-El is a lot faster than both the Mali MP-400 and SGX 543mp2 while having a lot more features let alone having five cores.
"GLBenchmark 2.1 now includes the ability to render the test offscreen at a resolution of 1280 x 720. This is not as desirable as being able to set custom resolutions since it's a bit too high for smartphones but it's better than nothing." Anandtech
EDIT: Apple might decide to cut back the A5 running inside the iPhone 5 to just one 543, or a lower clocked version, as having two doesn't really make any sense on a mobile phone at least when battery life is taken into consideration.

There is a developer tablet called ODROID-A that uses the Exynos 4210 SoC and it benches pretty well with an even higher resolution than the iPad 2 (1366x768 vs 1024x768).
Comparison for reference.
With a 50% increase, the Mali-400 (assuming they keep this GPU) will be comparable to the SGX-543MP2.

Well, for all I know, the CPU in the iPad 2 is larger(The chip itself is larger),which instantly translates in more transistors being placed in the same space.I can only suspect that same goes for the GPU.But even if it does not,it's most likely that the version in the iPhone 5/4s/whatever won't be the same. Will it be underclocked?Smaller?I don't know.
By the way,I personally believe manufacturers **** all over their tablets when they put phone SoC's in them. There should be a different, more powerful(albeit more power-hungry) variant of each SoC for tablets. But that's just me.
As for the iPhone part, don't mistake me as a hater(I hate it btw,but I won't flame it or anything. If it's better than what I have,I'll just admit it.It's not the hardware I hate). In fact I wish it's THAT powerful,so that the competition will drive performance up for everyone. And that, for us,is a win.

Nexus Prime

Anyone selling up to get the Nexus Prime? I think I will. Hopefully they've ironed out the little faults with the S2.
I am, if there is expandable memory, and and not the 5m camera but 8m. Love the teaser shots so far and really like the curve screen. I would have the nexus s right now if it had a bigger memory.
It would be nice and I am tempted but I don't think I could cope with vanilla android even if it is ics.

Here are the most accurate specs: http://www.gsmarena.com/possible_specs_of_the_nexus_prime_surface-news-3237.php
Update: A new batch of rumored specs have surfaced over on GSM Arena, and these seem to be more in line with what we'd expect of a new Nexus. According to an anonymous Google employee, that 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display mentioned above is just about the only spec to make the final cut. The processor, however, is more likely to be a dual-core 1.5GHz Exynos (that's right) with an accompanying dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics chip. That rear facing camera? Try 8 megapixels with a newly beefed up sensor. The handset should also ship with a girthy 2,050mAh battery fully capable of juicing this apparent LTE / CDMA / GSM Android monster.

I think the Galaxy S III will be vaguely similar and get a release around February so I might just wait for that. Got a while to go until my contract finishes and perfectly happy with my SGS2 right now.
I'm considering it. Pretty happy with my Galaxy S but that Nexus sure is tempting, for one it looks so sexy.
If it has the rumoured tablet dock I'm definitely sold.

My Design for the "Nexus 4"

I'm a big fan of the One S, and think that it would be great hardware, when tweaked a bit, for a more "casual" Nexus that could actually compete with the iPhone. Due to the moniker, Nexus 7, it would be called the Nexus 4.
Changes from One S to Nexus 4:
Keep 4.3" screen size, but with One X quality. Higher brightness and > 300ppi.
Cut off the hardware buttons to reduce the vertical size and weight of the phone.
Bump ram to 2GB.
Pure Google
So what do you think? Any changes? Do you think it's a good idea? Could you see a large casual market adopting this phone in a similar way to the iPhone?
Here's a quick mockup: Nexus 4

The Design of the One S is amazing and would not change it too much, maybe a slight change to the backing so it doesnt slip of the hand. Screen Size 4.3" to 4.5". Removable battery and edge to edge display.
Yeah would be nice, but without the hardware buttons it looks a little bit ****ty.
If I helped in any way please hit thanks

Anyone else want to speculate on the Samsung Galaxy S IV?

Just a harmless conversation based on what the next Samsung flagship phone might receive based on trends of the mobile industry. You can offer your own opinions and/or critiques.
With the Nexus 4, sporting a very powerful S4 Snapdragon quad processor, 320 Adreno GPU, 2 GB of RAM and the standard HD display, it's sure to be the strongest thing we have until the HTC Butterfly (now dubbed the HTC DNA) comes (reportedly to Verizon) sporting a 1080p screen, probably the same processor and RAM, as well as a bigger battery.
It's clear that the competition within the Android ecosystem isn't as monopolized by Samsung like it was a year or two ago - at least in terms of quality products. The Galaxy S II stayed not only as the top Android phone, but the top phone period for almost a whole year. It seems that HTC and LG have stepped up their game and are putting out functioning, competitive products. The Galaxy S III kind of fell off the performance radar within 4-5 months. (comparatively speaking)
Samsung has been reportedly testing 3 GB RAM on experiment phone models; if that made it to the final product of the GSIV, that would make it a trend-setter in that regard. It's also going to come with the new-generation 13 megapixel camera module, which is slated to desolate any popular 8 MP camera shooters on the market - such as the HTC One X, Galaxy S III (the worst of the bunch on the front-facing camera) or iPhone 5 with its color-reproduction and low-light performance.
As for the processor, I hope they throw in the ultra-powerful Exynos 5450 (the Cortex-A15 quad-core) rated at around 2 GHz, it will absolutely eat the already unbelievably fast S4 Krait quad in the upcoming megaphones for breakfast. The Mali-658 GPU from the aforementioned would probably also be on par, if not better than that in the iPad 4's A6X's GPU. Last but not least, anyone else hoping we'll see a beautiful Super AMOLED HD Plus display (or whatever they'll call it) with full 1080p?
All of these rumors and speculation sound reasonable at this point, given what we've been seeing in the market place. If it all turned out to be true, the Galaxy S IV would be leaps and bounds above any smartphone upon its release and maybe easily throughout the year subsequent to its release. I'm actually excited that the competition within Android is picking up steam. The harder these companies compete against each other, the more us, as consumers win.
In the next generation phones, most of them would be compatible with nfc payments, like Google wallet or isis.
I expect faster processor and a minimum of 2 gb of ram.
Most likely, every phone will come in different screen sizes. So you can choose a particular phone with your choice of screen size.

more batery life
It's great that a lot of attention is put into adding better specs (RAM, CPU, features like NFC, etc), but my biggest concern is that they' don't pay enough attention to battery life. I don't understand why they don't invest more in this field.
Here's to hoping that Samsung will care more about this and innovate in this area.

Louder sound through the headphone jack. This is really a general complaint with my two other Android devices as well, a Nexus 7 and Asus TF101, the volume is just way too quiet. I hate having to resort to flashing various audio files that often don`t work as advertised. Just give me proper volume control out of the box, I`ll be the judge of what`s too loud.

Besides, I was going to get an S4 before deciding to wait for the Note 3. So if it looks like the S4, fine by me

I hope it gets a new look. I still prefer the SII over the S3 and S4.

If you seen the leaked Photos lately, it looks like it has the original body of the Note 1

But if you look at everything else Samsung has made in the past year, they all look like the S4. Even there tablets the Galaxy Note 8 looks like a giant S4. hopefully they change that, as this is the only real problem of there phones. Its like there doing a IPhone.
Waiting desperately for note 3
Good camera with flash
Note app
gorilla glass
nice sound
fast
all good features from note 2 and s4
