[Q] Flashing CM 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You may have noticed from my post count that I am indeed, a noob.
I have just rooted my gt p5100 using cf autoroot, and am wondering what to do next in order to flash Cyanogen Mod 10.1.
I presumed that I must flash cwm recovery and then flash cm image using cwm, could anyone please confirm?

Yes. Next order of business is to install cwm. Make a nandroid backup, and follow the roms instructions (as in deleting cache, formatting data, etc..)

Thanks for the quick reply, but how do I make a nandroid backup?

Its in cwm boot. Youll find it. Always make backups before trying a new rom or make a substantial change.

Yeah so everything went pretty smoothly, no problems, except for a few bugs here and there... Might consider flashing BAKED Blackbean.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Flashing a new recovery

Hi,
I probably have a stupid question for you guys, but I gotta ask it.
So, I currently have the latest ClockworkMod Recovery and a custom ROM. And I want to flash a new recovery. It's 4EXT recovery, to be more specific.
So my questions are following:
1. Will I mess up my ROM by flashing a new recovery? Do I have to do a Nandroid before flashing new recovery?
2. If 1. is correct, and I do backup, will a normal restore do the trick in order to run my ROM properly, after I already flashed a new recovery?
3. If I wanna go back to ClockworkMod recovery, will a normal flash via ROM Manager be enough to perform that?
Many thanks.
No, your backup will be gone, you should not have to do a wipe or flash another rom. Yes, you can just flash it back threw rom manager.
Please hit the thank you button if i helped!

how can it be gone if nandroid saves in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ ???
Because another recovery does not use the same folder.

Okay, thanks, but you didn't answer on my first question.
Will I mess up my current ROM after flashing a new recovery?
Thanks
I dont think it will. I am 99% sure it wont, but since i dont know about the other recovery, i cant say with full certainty. But most dont so i would not worry about it.
Please hit the thank you button if i helped!

Hi!
I rooted my Galaxy S3.
Using this method: http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3/
It all went fine, but then i wanted to try using other ROM's, but i wanted to make a backup first, however i cannot find the backup button in the ClockWorkRecovery..
it only shows whipe data, clear cache and such but no back up OR Restore.
I also tried RE rooting it but no luck.
What do i do here?
Can i install ROM Manager Premium and flash recovery from there even though i installed this cwm? ( http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3/)
Please help me out!
One does not simply install custom ROMS without Backing Up First!
Thank you very much!

[Q] How to update ROM's

So here's my question: How do you update your ROM?
Yes I am using the same ROM to update to.
Is it the same method as flashing it in the first place?
e.g.: Go into CWM and flash it?
Or is there a different way of doing it.
If you have an answer please explain it thoroughly.
Hi,
i have last week installed cyanogen 9
to update to the last build of yesterday, i have just installed it from CWM.
i didn't lose any data

So your saying just flash it again with no additional steps?
Just place the updated ROM file in the root of the sdcard and just flash away?

Yes
I've noticed that flashing ROMs without wiping data causes more problems than it helps you avoid.
Also, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/AOKP_Frequently_Asked_Questions
It's always better to do a factory reset before a ROM install to avoid these issues, even when doing a direct upgrade from AOKP -> AOKP.

It wouldn't hurt to fix permissions after you flash if you don't wipe your data.
If FB said yes then cheers to that! Thanks FB!
And thanks for the advice guys, I'll make sure to wipe data before updating.
EDIT: Also what are gremlins? Do I need to remove these gremlins before I update my ROM? Or do I just clean gremlins IF I install a different ROM?
If so how do I remove gremlins? (A link provided is enough )
This thread should explain everything:

I would recommend it only if you have flasheda bunch of stuff and are starting to see problems like poor performance, or extreme battery drain. It's also helpful if you just need to get back to stock+root quickly. Also, if you're having problems, try the other steps in the thread first. When I was having battery issues, the battery trick in the thread fixed it perfectly.

So by flash do you mean just putting the ROM into the phone and selecting it just like you would when you originally installed the ROM? How do you wipe the original ROM before flashing the update?
Certain ROMs now use the Aroma installer (FBis was responsible for much of the work to make that possible for SGS4G ROMs) which provide more options than a CW Recovery or TWRP "install zip" kind of install. The Aroma installer generally lets you save/restore or wipe.
Both CW Recovery and TWRP have options to wipe one or more of your partitions before you install. They are a little different and which one you have will depend on what you are flashing from.

what phone model/ can you enter recovery/download again/ do you have a rom/stock for you phone ?
well you have to reflash it
Hi,
If you want to flash a new rom, you should do a factory reset first. Here your /system gets formatted anyway, as far as I know. So don't worry.
Just go back to recovery and flash your rom.
If you don't like it, you can always restore your backup, that you have made.
Cheers!

[Q] Installation aborted

Hi,
I’m really new at rooting and was just following videos…
I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3113 (with CWM recovery) no problem…superuser app all good. I found droidcheats youtube video to install the CM10.2 (cyanogenmod) Jellybean 4.3 rom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uooLuG0Ydr8&list=WLjdPTB2mWRMy4mUvbarAjZEaZRdNawRmD
I downloaded the rom, google apps, tablet ui, and CWM recovery update.
Xda Thread from Codyf86:

ClockWorkMod Recovery flashable update:
https://www.file1.info/Rzhs9La
Checked USB debugging, moved files to device, unplugged and put into recovery mode, now 6.0.1.1 version, updated CWM, advanced boot recovery, now version 6.0.3.7, wiped data factory reset, wiped dalik cache, flashed rom….installation aborted.
Looks like I installed the wrong rom file.
Now I’m stuck in recovery or at reboot screen. I think I have the right rom file now but my computer doesn’t recognize my device.
I’m not sure what to do next…Can you help.
Thanks
sd card
I'm thinking if I install the correct rom from the micro sd card, it might work?
