I think I bricked my SG4GS (SGH-959v) - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hello everyone I am back again with a galaxy this time
I used this guide to root my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
the root worked perfectly, but I did wrong is that I didn't have any of my applications that I had before root, so I thought that it is a good idea to go back into CWM and restore it from there, after I did that the phone rebooted and got stuck in the Galaxy screen, I am unable to access recovery, CWM or download mode the phone doesn't even boot it justs sits at the galaxy screen.
btw I have this kernel Bhundven's Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix (thanks to AntonX )
this is the rom that I flashed -Valhalla - BlackEdition(thanks to RaverX3X)
my computer does recognise my phone when I do the three finger salute while plugged in usb.
please I need help this is my only phone

If you can still get into recovery then try wiping the caches and fix permissions. That may fix it, if not maybe wipe data. Otherwise if you can still use recovery then you should try wiping everything and re-installing the rom, or restore nandroid backup and use titanium to backup your apps.
If you can't get to recovery then you should be able to one-click back to stock from download mode and start over.

So, I have been in this very situation with that same very setup. I flashed a Nandroid backup and bam, stuck at the screen. Spent hours trying to fix it. Best part was, I was on a business trip, and all the info I needed was in my phone
So, the trick here as I recall is to get the phone in Download Mode, once there, you can then use Heimdall One-Click http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 (which is what I used that time) or you can flash One-Click Gremlin Remover, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500427 which uses Odin to Flash back to Stock.
To the best of my recollection, here is how I recall getting into D/L mode after hours of trying. About 5am, got it to work. Thanks to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112076
Steps are:
1. Have Heimdall or One-Click opened and ready
2. Remove your battery
3. I would hold the power button for like 10 secs to discharge the circuits (not sure this is needed, just like a clean slate)
4. Hold the Volume rocker down (no battery in the phone yet) *Note you DO NOT press or hold the POWER button for this procedure.
5. Plug computer connected USB into your phone (still holding down the volume rocker)
6. Insert Battery into phone (still holding down the volume rocker) Your phone should automatically turn on at this point in to Download Mode.
The order of the above is critical in that you do not install your battery until after the USB is connected, while you hold the volume rocker down. This should take you into Download mode where you can reflash.
You might also run into an issue where your computer does not recognize the drivers for your phone initially (because they are not being sent to it by the phone). If you are getting into Download Mode and you see that Heimdall or One Click is not detecting the device, reinstall the drivers from the Samsung site for the SGS4G and then try.
Hope this helps! Been in the exact same jam, you can get this fixed. Soft bricks are always better than hard bricks.

Thanks for clarifying, that was what I meant. I press the middle of the rocker to hold it "down" did not even think of that being mistaken as in directionally down. Sounds like the OP is up and running so all good.

Good to hear. Now, get yourself updated to one of the stable ICS MTD ROMs, I never had much success with the GB ROMs being all that stable for me. Personally, I like AOKP (4.0.4) myself.

Out of curiosity, did you end up using Heimdall or One-Click Gremlin Remover?

My last hope to unbrick?

The phone is bricked. I flashed to the i9000 firmware and was about to root the phone and didn't bother to flash the new kernel yet. I get into recovery to go to reinstall packages to install the root, and to my surprise the power button didn't work to select since I had the wrong kernel. SO I do adb reboot download and then I try to flash the new kernel. Odin just freezes there and doesn't do anything, I unplug the data cable and then it says FAIL! on Odin. I take out the battery and put it back in to see if the phone will still boot, and now I'm stuck on the phone/computer. People have tried helping and they told me about every single key combo to put it in download and none of them work. When I told Vol+ and power the screen flashes black and then I wait for it to do it the second time and i let go of the power and it stays there at phone/computer. I've done everything I can possibly see to do it and this is my last hope to get it to work again, or else I have to take it to AT&T and lose all my stuff on the internal SDcard.
EDIT: AT&T refuses to replace the phone.
From designgears' one click Odin thread. Not sure if you tried this, but it might work.
Good luck.

Faster way to Download Screen

Not sure if this has been posted before, though I have not seen it in my searches.
Remove the battery
Plug in the USB
Hold Down Volume and and Down
While holding them down, insert the battery
and Boom - Instant download screen.
You do not have to wait for two cycles.
Put the back plate on and flash away.
This works from either "bricked" (Computer "!" Phone) or reboot.

Not really a development topic.
i have not bricked my device from doing this but what i do is just...
1. power down device
2. hold vol +/- button
3. insert usb
and it always goes to download screen. keep in mind i have flashed my device countless times using this method and have not ran into any problems but its just a fyi

No, computer doesn't recognize it. If I had an ADB connection, I'd adb reboot download but when I try adb, it says no device found.
try plugging in usb with the battery out and then holding vol+- and inserting the battery while holding the volume buttons if not you need to make a jig.
I've had success with this method to get into Download Mode:
1. Remove battery, SIM and microSD from phone (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Plug your phone into your computer (this step has always been optional for me)
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go!
5. While holding both volume keys, insert the battery
If it worked, you should almost instantly be in Download Mode. I've omitted step 3 and still had success using those steps on my batch 1007 phone. In general, I get my phone into Download Mode first, and then plug it into the computer.
I'm probably just going to go to AT&T tomorrow and get them to exchange it if I can't get it to get into download mode tonight.

That's a semi-bricked screen. No, normal method to go into download mode won't work in this state.
There are instructions to recover from this state into download mode. I have posted a few links in the past but don't have it right now. IIRC, you need to hold both vol buttons and Power button and wait until screen goes blank twice before release the power button so that your phone could go into download mode.
The other way is to rig a microUSB plug with a 301k resistor connected between pin5 and one of the data pin. This will put your phone instantly into download mode. There is a thread dedicated for this. Search.

I've been having the same issue and none of the methods mentioned on the forums have worked. I recently updated to a custom 2.2.1 rom (Paragon) and when I tried to flash back to stock with odin (afterwards), it gave me the finger (got stuck in the process). I tried to unplug and plug back in the usb, restart odin, pc, reinstall drivers (none of which helped). So my dumbarse decided to take the battery out to reboot the phone. Usually after doing so in the past, I've been able to manually get into download mode using the 3 button combo, but haven't been able to so far. I haven't tried making a jig yet, knowing me, I might seriously break something that way.
I was reading somewhere that 2.2.1 breaks the 3 button combo (along with 1 click root for that matter). Just wondering if there is anything else I can try or should I just make a jig? Should I take it in to AT&T and see if they can do something or should I call them? Just wanting some advice from the Gurus here.
edit: and "no, I can't do it through ADB or I would've already".

2.2.1 puts the 3-button setup to whatever the i9000 uses, which is different from the Captivate. Nobody's made a fix yet AFAIK.
for me i managed to get it into download mode, BUT, when i try running Odin it's stuck at "DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!"

What build is your phone, located under battery. Something like 1010
Search for Sparkfun in the dev forum for Captivate. Easy to make jig (that's been mentioned before) that will get you out of the woods.
I am having issues getting into download mode myself. Samsung Captivate SGH-I897. I just got it less than two weeks ago. Played with some of the features. Did the root. Did the ROM manager. Everything I needed to do to have Serendipity 5.12 installed. Did it. worked great. Was missing some of the apps I enjoyed from the gate(Samsung EMail). So i read up that u could make a custom Serendipity in the kitchen.
Put the phone to JH6 from Odin. Also did the master clear. So now I am at 2.1 update 1 from Odin.
However, Now I cant get Clockwork Recovery at all ( when option is selected it goes to default recovery every single time ). I did try to re-install the correct flash for Clockwork, same results.
So, i thought maybe something didnt copy or flash or clear correctly and was going to do an Odin procedure again, cant get into download mode now. NOT AT ALL.
The phone will just re-boot into JH6. It operates normally, however I can shake JH6. No download mode. No Clockwork recovery.
I am noob, I am a quick hands on learner though. Not even sure if this will get the response desired.

[Q] Stuck in bootloop

My phone randomly turned off and went into a bootloop today. I've tried everything I know (pulling the battery, tried booting into CWM too) but they didn't work. Every time I put the battery in, the bootloop starts. I went through some other threads i found and a lot of them were talking about Odin, but idk what that is. Any help guys?
I'm running Infused v2.2.3, Entropys kernel
EDIT: New problem: I made my own JIG using resistors, and when I boot into download mode, it just keeps boot looping into download mode until i take the JIG out, so I can't flash using Odin or any other method if it keeps turning on and off.
Any solutions to this?

2nd one didn't work, that's what I was trying before
Going to let the battery die and see what happens, trying to make my own JIG in the mean time

Making your own should work.
There's a fine point I want to make sure that you are doing correctly.
RECOVERY is holding all three buttons. Two volumes and power for 2 to 3 cycles.
Download is pull battery. Hold only two volume buttons, NO power button. Insert battery while holding volumes and insert USB. You can also insert USB then insert battery.
Try a different USB cordS. Try a different USB ports. Try a different battery

Yes, I know how to read instructions, I wasn't holding the power button and trying to get into download mode.

I wasn't implying that you can't read...it is a common error.

help!!

Hello I'm having some trouble. I tryed to flash cm9 and cwm told me that the zip file was bad, so I tryed to restore and my phone gets stuck at the start screen '' galaxy s 4g'' screen. I removed the battery and got it into download mode and replaced the files ive forgot what buttons to hold down to get it into cwm any ideas
First confirm you have a good download by checking the md5. Then try flashing, making sure you have "skip verifying zip files" to checked, or whatever the CWR option is.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development
Its a little late now, I'm looking though a bunch of bricked post atm. I can get the phone to downlaoding mode but thats about it. I was sure there was a way to get it to cwm by holding some buttons. It goes to the start screen and thats about it
Bryan made a one click back to factory that I just used. I need to be pointed in his drection so I can buy him a beer!

if you can get to download mode then it means your semi brick....
if you want to go back to recovery mode, hold power and volume up+down for like 4 second and release the buttons.
if you can get to recovery, you can always mount the phone and download the cm9 in your computer and transfer it to your phone again.
if you can't, use download mode and use 1-click heimdall or gremlin remover and go back to stock GB and redo flash back to cm9
The combo is hold vol up and down, then power... Thing is that phone can't be plugged to computer or it will keep getting on download mode.
*You can just hold vol up and down, then connect usb from computer to phone and it will go to download mode.
*Obviously, phone must be off in order to do this.

My favorite part was you searched... Already, you're my favorite newb!
GJ!
Thanks truly goes to:
AdamOutler (Thanks for making my working Sgs4g UnBrickable and for One-Click, and One-Click-Packager!)
Benjamin Dobell (and everyone that worked on Heimdall!)
Well, and RaverX3X and FBis251 for helping me get all the right files in the same place at the same time.
I'm more of an orchestrator of unbrickedness.
But, hey. I like beer!
