I'm currently running cm10.1
My question is... is there any application on the play store that allows me to have a password on my wifi ap? I know wifi tether works but I need a password. My neighbors keeps connecting to it when I have it on. They completely eat my data... LOL in one hour they used 3 gig

what teathering app are you using? try the treve mod apk. it's in the synergy rom but available elsewhere on xda.
If you don't mind touchwiz, CleanROM has unlocked native wifi tether with WPA encryption, I don't think trevE's app has encryption, at least it didn't last time I tried using it, or maybe I'm just an idiot and couldn't figure it out Lol.

What rom does he have?
Edit * just kidding that is the rom. That's not android 4.2. I'm looking for help for a 4.2 rom
I use the trevE Mod on my S3 and have it set with a password AND I have to approve any device connecting.
It's in Settings, then check Enable WiFi encryption. You can even change the passphrase. Then scroll down a bit more and check Enable Access control.

Anyone know where I can get a working WiFi Tether apk for CM7? The one I have from CM6 isn't working.
The stock tethering app works fine for me
Why wouldn't you use the built in hotspot? It works great.
You just need to use the built in hotspot, under wireless settings. You have the same features, can change the ssid, and password encrypt it. I'm using it right now.

use the built-in tether app. To make it really easy add it to a PowerControl widget (add widget to screen, select "Portable WiFi Hotspot" from the list of options).
If you don't want to use it, the other best one (in my experience) is called something like "Wireless Tether for Root Users"
Just use the built-in option under wireless settings...
Or check THIS page

I don't know if this has been mentioned but the stock hotspot iis pretty nasty. I suggest that
When I try and enable the built in Portable Hotspot it immediately deselects and says "Error." Any ideas?

This. Thanks for the help guys and putting up with a lame thread.
Not lame for asking a question. You could have posted this in the development section.
Sweet, looks like restarting helped, my 4G speeds still sucks though in this area, i restarted and threw 4G and tethering on and tested my speed on my ipod touch and got .32Mbps/.21Mpbs and my battery was draining 1% per minute, lol.

I love the built in tether, but is there a way to make a widget for it? I'm just lazy and don't like having to jump through menus haha.
Its built into the power control widget.

Basically what I wanna do is use my phone to tether my Xbox. I have the Nexus S 4G rooted running cyanogenmod 9 nightly. I don't have a computer so I'm kind of lost. Every time I try to tether it didn't work. So any help would be appreciated.

The only steps I take when using the tethering app is change the ssid to my personal choice, and then open the access control and set it up for security by only allowing my laptop to connect. As for the d/l speeds, that really depends on your individual situation. Since I have wimax available, my speeds are very good. Hope this helps ...

Here's specifically what I do ...
Leave the device profile on auto, leave the setup method on auto, do not enable encryption. Check the boxes on access control, vibrate on connect, and disable wake lock. Next, I start the tethering ... once connected, go into access control through the menu, where you will see the mac address of your connected device. Check the box, and save through the menu. This will secure your signal so that no one else can connect. I then will turn off the tethering and then re-start the tethering app. This will allow the access control to start with the saved configuration. Sorry if this is too elementary ... just wanted to be helpful with the details.

Leaving the device on auto & auto put my tether in an 'ad hoc' network. If you want it to be more like an actual wireless router then change the device profile to Google Nexus One and Setup Method to softap(master). That will create an 'infrastructure' network meaning just about anything with a wireless connection should connect to it. My friends PS3 can't connect to ad hoc networks, so I played around with it for a bit.
Hope this helps in anyway.

If you are referring to Mobile Hotspot then yes,I used mine today to tether a laptop. At first my laptop recognized the connection but failed when trying to get IP/connect. Then I realized that it was set to Only Allowed Devices. Once I toggled to Allow All Devices, it worked flawlessly.
Settings > Tap on Mobile Hotspot > Should show your device's name , tap on it and it should change to Allow All Devices to connect.
I guess mine wasn't totally stock as I flashed it to the root66 ROM on its very first boot out of the box, but the mobile hotspot worked fine for me & I never had a charge from VZ on my bill for it.

No Problem. Glad my first post was used to help someone!
Does this only work if you pay VZW extra? I think that was the way it used to work but it has been years since I have been running a stock ROM (just came over from a DInc running Jelly Bean with Butter - awesome but slooooow). Now an S3 man!
Now I could be mistaken, but I believe if you have a shared plan (anything but unlimited) then tethering is free. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

As the title say I want to know if there is a way to turn on WiFi hotspot without turning off WiFi I saw this feature in one of my friend's phone he was running 2.3 (Gingerbread). Is there anything like this for KitKat (4.4.2) ? Please recommend external apps or method.
Thanks

its not software related, its built in to the phone itself. most phones cant handle both connections at the same time.

If so it isn't possible to do it manually only trough apps, I suppose.
Try search Google for it if not successful try search in Google Play you might find something
If still not successful then I'm out of options
Edit: Unless you find out a way to create 2 different Wi-Fi's with the same connection. To do it you will need to go to your Internet Connection Settings trough your IP in any browser to find the IP go start than search CMD press ENTER then type Ipconfig and it should be under IPv4. Then copy your IP place it into browsers address bar pres enter. You will be provided to enter login and password. So type admin to login and admin to password. And from there you are all alone.

So, if you already have wifi, why do you need to use your phone as a hotspot, if one already exists? Or are you looking to use it as a repeater?

I haven't tried the Tmobile firmware on this device, but had no issues on my S7e or my S8+. Didn't have wifi calling though, but I don't use that anyway.
I just flashed the unlocked firmware on it and I could use it just fine.
I'd like to know as well. Don't want to lose volte & Wi-Fi calling by flashing a different firmware.

Got it working last night using a method I found I think on the S8 section.
Use "BK disabler" and search system for "tether", disable all 3. I have attached a screen shot of them.
Set up your tether options, and make sure to Enable Wi-Fi sharing.
Now try to connect to any Wi-Fi network using a wrong password. While it's trying to connect quickly enable mobile hotspot, then turn off Wi-Fi.
I did it multiple times last night, it worked every time.
if you're looking for just an app then netshare no root tethering works, but since you have to use a proxy, it only allows internet to programs where you can configure proxy settings.
