wow! I just had this problem with my US bought Surface RT when I returned to my apartment in China. My router was set to channel 13 and I couldn't figure out why my smart phone was connecting but my surface wasn't even detecting my wifi, even though my surface is so close to the router the antenna is almost touching my surface!
I had to borrow a friend's laptop to change the channel, becuase the surfafce has no ethernet port and I bought this to replace my laptop.
So you are not imagining anything, I have the same problem.
I think its law in the US that devices sold there cannot have support for channels 12 and 13 (the frequencies allocated for those channels are allocated for something else in the US I think).
You probably can't re-enable it.
Probably not an issue either. Most devices I have seen here in the UK default to auto or channel 1. I've had american relatives come over and their laptops have connected to UK routers fine.

Nope. If you buy a surface in the US, it is limited to US frequencies.
and there is no way to reflash the firmware of the Marvell Avastar 88W8797 WiFi chip?

Most likely write once memory, ie, cannot reflash it.
I bought my Surface RT in the US, but am using it in the UK, so have the same problems.
Chances are it could be enabled with a new driver... most wifi cards in laptops are multi-frequency and are just enabled via the driver or firmware.
Getting a new driver onto the RT might be a problem though.
Is someone able to upload the driver files from their European system? Any files that show up under "Driver File Details" in Device Manager.

I do not believe there is any law in US against using 12 & 13 . All wi-fi routers are able to use them. I had this issue the first time last week when my router auto tuned to 12 and my Surface could no longer see the SSID but my phone and wife's ipad had no problem.
The FCC may permit their use at very low power, but I'm not even sure about that. There are a number of areas of radio communication where different "channels" (frequency ranges) are permitted in some countries but not in others. In many cases, devices manufactured in the US either can listen but not broadcast on those frequencies, or can only use them after put in "international" mode, but sometimes they are able to do so anyhow and it's on the user's head if they cause any interference.

I was given as a gift, have a WiFi only 7" Asian Android tablet purchased in Singapore.
I understand I can get a USB 3G modem with build in pre-paid SIM to get online for GSM network such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Can you please tell me what kind of third party modem I should look for and what kind specification? What kind of Android modem drive should I look for?
Thank you.
I understand Verizon users can get a similar USB 3G adapter for laptops to get online.
But those are CDMA modem, correct? So, these adapters has no build-in SIM card.
Where can I get more info on these? Thank you,
Also, can some one with AT&T or T-Mobile subscriber tell me, do you have USB modem adapters for your laptop?
I assume these are 3G digital modem using cellular network, correct? Thank you.

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing today and then here's your post.
There's other people asking the same question if you search the forums, but when I looked last there wasn't much work happening on that idea.
Personally I just tether my phone as a wifi hotspot. That way I don't have to pay for more than one overpriced 3G internet plan. I'm guessing most other users do this or make use of wifi hotspots around town, home, work etc. This probably negates the drive for development of such an app.
I imagine there's some custom code to be done to get it to work, and then for each individual usb modem. Probably not impossible, but not easy either. In Australia they're bringing out a newer version of their usb dongles probably every six months or so? It's hard to keep up.
I'll be interested to see if someone has got it going.
USB modem in Android
thedrcarl, I heard quite a bit about external 3G USB dongle.
This suppose to work with cellular network and when no wifi connection is possible.
In fact, I think there is such 3G USB dongle works in laptops. But what about Android Wifi only tablets?
I'm expecting it should, the dongles should work (Y)
I do found USB dongle adapter for GSM quad frequency modem for cellular network. It has software and drivers to work on Windows laptops. I think this is called Huawei modem USB adapter.
But not software for Android tablets (wifi only) to connect to internet using Cellular network. Does anybody out there get this working?
if you have a usb port, you would buy some huawei models with driver for android:
-huawei e160
e169
e220
e1750
after connecting the modem, you must configure the correct APN for your mobile network and if the sim doesn't recognises, you shuold delete the pin code with a cellphone
Is there a reason you need to buy a USB 3G modem and not just a 3G/4G wifi-hotspot? That would save you the pain of having to have it plugged in and I think they're usually comparably priced, no?
reply to usb modem
yes u can first check in tablet u have usb port u can
if u have miniusb u have to buy a bini usb to usb converter then plug select network apn etc
I think using GSM with SIM both T-Mobile and AT&T have pre-paid usage plan that only charge what you use, not in monthly contract.
Am I correct?
Hi,
i just received my nexus 5, but i couldn't find my wifi (i found others and could connected to them) . After i switched the channel width at my router from "Auto 20/40mhz" to "20mhz" it worked fine. Does the Nexus 5 doesn't support 40mhz or is it just my device?
Thanks!

I'm going to try to test some various little wireless things that are going on with it when mine comes in today. For one, they are not allowing the use of channels past 11 which is most likely by design for US spec 802.11B/G.
If I were you, I'd try a few different A channels (52, 56, etc.,) with the 40mhz bandwidth on. I know in the newest code for Cisco AP's I work with, they've gotten a little wonky due to FCC rules for devices with multiple radios.
Has anyone had trouble with connecting to 5GHz networks with the 2012 GT8010?
I've been unable to. I can see the network but always get authentication issues. This occurred with the original 4.1.2 rooms and now with omnirom after a full reset
My other devices such as a laptop and s4 have no issues...
2.4GHz is just fine even to the same router with the same security settings. Disabling security., dropping g down from ac to a doesn't help nor does switching channel

I have not had any problems personally. I'm running stock not rooted. I have heard other guys having problems though. Sorry I can't help
If you're rooted (or even just have a custom recovery) check here. Turns out that the wrong WiFi config file is being used in US-based units so 5GHz DFS channels won't always work.

thanks. interesting to see if I have issues in those files, but I am actually in the UK in any case.
I tried copying the *mfg* file to *txt* - manufacturing? default perhaps? this had cc=ALL instead of UK, but I figured why not
No difference.....
So followup question - could any UK users post their files from /system/etc/wifi/nvram_net.txt*

Does anyone ever got more than 150 mbps rate ? I mean the connection rate between the tablet and router, not some speed test result. On 5Ghz I get 150, on 2.4GHz no more than 72 mbps. I tried 3 different routers, never got more then 150 mbps, and 60 up/60 down in speed tests.

No, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's intentionally set via the WiFi firmware; the WiFi chip is connected to the Exynos via a 50MHz bus that's 4 bits wide, so your effective thruput wouldn't ever be higher than ~180Mbit/sec anyway.
Noticed that on my 12.2 with the latest FW the high wifichannels 11,12 and 13 are not availble to connect with my router My note 4 doesnt have that problem Finds my router on channel 13 without any problem.
Is this hardware and normal. And is there a way to have those channels availble

Are you in the US? If so, then channels 12 and higher are not "technically" available in your area, they are for non-US applications. Some firmwares restrict higher certain based on channel and some do not. If you are ine US, then then you should set your router to use a channel between 1-11 for best compatibility, if you are outside the US where these channels are used, make sure you have all your regional settings correct and the ROM version is correct for your region.

I am from Holland [The Netherlands] Its the Dutch stockrom witch is only rooted. I was aware of what you wrote that indeed in the US you cant go higher then channel 11
So i was thinking is this a hardware problem? Firmware problem? Kernel problem?
Well its not really a problem but the lower channels are full with other users so I was thinking i use the 12 or 13 as i do on my Note 4... But the Note 12.2 cant..

This would be a firmware issue, I would contact Samsung support via the web.
I have noticed this over the past several months and it is constant. Using multiple TMO Sims in multiple unlocked devices. Several websites will not respond when using cellular data. Those sites respond just fine when connected to WIFI on the same devices. Originally seemed to be a DNS issue but using T-Mobile DNS servers the sites seems to resolve correctly. Aside from not responding to web requests they also do not respond to ping either. My guess is that this has something to do with IPV6 but even when changing apn settings to strictly IPV4 the issue remains.
Do any other T-Mobile users have this issue? We have 1100 lines of service on several different unlocked devices all with the same issue. The easiest site to test this with is t-mobile themselves... T-Mobile.com will never respond when trying from cellular data. Also several MS Office online sites fail as well.

@stevecast2024,
Steve, I am on T-Mobile as well. Could you give me some specific sites you are having issues with ?
I would be happy to see if I am having similar issues on these sites.
Thanks my friend.
Sure. Thanks for the reply. Here are a few:
T-Mobile.com
Login.yahoo.com
wunderground.com
Sprint.com
The sites will simply time out. Work fine on wifi.
I also have noticed issues with some apps. For instance Zello, works most of the time but occasionally they shift login servers and we have to disable tls/ssl in the app in order for it to connect. Very odd. Unfortunately, that is a bit more difficult to troubleshoot.
Thanks
If you are on Android 10 and you have bootloader unlocked and rooted, then it might be Android 10 prohibiting you. I can't do anything on Firefox now.

OK @stevecast2024,
I have tried each of these 4 sites on:
1. A Windows 10 desktop using Chrome and connected using GB wired ethernet to a Cox cable modem.
and2. A T-Mobile branded OnePlus 8T (unrooted, bootloader locked) using Chrome and connected solely thru a T-Mobile 5G connection.
Note: both systems were connected using both ipv4 and ipv6
My results were as follows:
T-Mobile.com: Worked as expected on both systems
Login.yahoo.com: Worked as expected on both systems, however, the phone showed a more simplified interface compared to the desktop
wunderground.com: Worked as expected on both systems
Sprint.com: On both systems, redirected to T-Mobile.com, but then displayed a popup saying:
"Sprint has joined T-Mobile!
We're so glad you're here. If you're a Sprint customer, tap 'Continue' to access your account and more."
In short, I did not see any connectivity issues at all on these sites. I will continue to test these sites from different locations and at different times to see if I can recreate any of the issues you are seeing.
FYI: I am in Las Vegas and I have been VERY pleasantly surprised with the 5G coverage and bandwidth here so far.
May I ask where you are located ?

My phone has Android 11 and does not have issues with any of these sites. I wonder if it might have something to do with the 5G network upgrades in your area. Maybe a glitch was introduced in your area when the network was upgraded

Unfortunately, @stevecast2024 indicates he is seeing this issue on nearly 1000 devices of varying brands and android versions. That certainly doesn't sound like a defective phone
Thanks for testing. I'm on the east coast. Just outside of Philadelphia Pa. None of these devices support 5g but I wouldn't be surprised if the 5g upgrades may have something to do with the issue.
I will say I am beyond happy with the coverage we get from T-Mobile here. We bought the CAT S42 phones due to durability and their support of TMO LTE band 71 600mhz. The 600 mhz coverage is phenomenal.

Yes, before I had a 5G phone, my 4G LTE here was frequently band 71 and was also fast.
I was thinking, you could try connecting one of your phones to a PC and adb shell to the device.
You should then be able to try some command line DNS and/or TCP connections, narrowing down what is happening.
So yesterday our Sonim XP8s received an upgrade to Android 10. Now not only can we not access the specified websites and many others, but we can no longer use the ZelloWork application when on mobile data. As soon as wifi is turned off Zello disconnects and will not reconnect until wifi is turned back on. Errors in the Zello Log show Failed to read public key.
