I am running the Hyperdrive RLS7 ROM with Lean kernel. I have decided that I like Chomp for messaging better than the AOSP style messaging app I installed using AROMA with this ROM. I used App Manager to disable the baked in messaging app and, after that, I could send SMS, but couldn't receive any SMS/MMS or send MMS. So I re-enabled messaging and could send both, but only receive SMS. I went back to a nandroid, but this didn't fix the problem. I ended up doing a clean install of Hyperdrive.
My question is whether this is a ROM issue, related to my use of the App manager or a problem with the messaging choice in AROMA or something else altogether? Should Chomp have still worked with the messaging app disabled and should it have worked correctly after enabling it again? Was there any way to fix it without a full clean install? TIA.
I think the problem is with Chomp. I've always had MMS issues with Chomp and Handcent fc'ing. Also, you should not disable your stock messaging app (as you found out), otherwise it will give you issues with the third party apps.
Honestly, I've tried a lot of different sms/mms apps, since I'm not a huge fan of the stock S3 one, and I keep going back to GoSMS. I do really dislike the push notifications they force on you, but it handles group messaging the best of anything I've tried, along with mms. I have tried the AOSP messenger tweak for TW, too. No bueno. Just my two cents.
Have you tried contacting your sim provider and asking them to send the default usage setting for your phone? It will come as a text and will install when you open it!

If I send MMS messages through Handcent, people on other networks receive them fine. However, if I send an MMS message via the stock messaging app, people receive the message as a slideshow (e.g., a play and pause button appear), even though I'm only sending a single picture. Do others have this problem as well? Is there a fix for it? Between 3rd party launchers being more stable than Google's stock launcher, and now Handcent having less bugs than the stock messaging app, this is really starting to get old.

Eh, happens to me sometimes, it more or less depends on what carrier is receiving the MMS
ATT Tmo and Sprint users get my MMS fine Verizon get a slideshow thingy
After JB update I cant send mms from CHOMP or HANDCENT. SMS work fine but MMS force cloes on CHOMP and just never sends on HANDCENT. Does anyone elese have this problem? I have uninstalled apps and reinstalled and same thing. I then went as for as wiping phone and still didnt work. Any help? or is it something that the app developers have to do to there apps?
I haven't tested the ones you mentioned but I'm using Go SMS Pro and all messaging functions work fine for me on JB.

Thanks guys. I will use GOSMS for now until CHOMP gets updated. I went to CHOMPS website and it says then there is a known problem with JB and it will be updated soon.
Hey there, I've been looking for a way to fix this for a few days now and im stumped.
Im using Synergy rom, juice defender ultimate and handcent. My problem is when I receive MMS messages while connected to wifi I have to manually disable wifi then re-open handcent and download the message again. Same with the stock messaging app. It seems handcent doesnt like to use wifi. I cant find any settings in either app that seem to allow me to force MMS to downloag over 4g. Has anyone else had this issue?
P.s. it also happens while sending mms messages. If I do not manually change any settings and let JD do its thing, it takes hours for a picture messgae to send.

had this same issue on cleanrom. i ddint use handcent nor juicedefender. i just swtiched over to synergyrom r443. i don't have any issues now. hmmmmmm??? i am unable to explain this to you, it's well beyond my understanding. just thought i'd give you a courtesy call.
Had this issue when on a TW ROM, switched over to an AOSP ROM (LiquidSmooth) and no issues with that anymore. For what it's worth, AOSP ROMs rock ;]
I used to use cleanrom and had the same problem with and without juice defender. Id rather not change roms again im pretty happy with this rom and kernal.
Is auto retrieve checked?

I have a similar issue, just noticed it recently with CleanROM 6R2. It does not seem to happen with the stock ROM, as both my wife and I have S3's, hers stock. We are both using Verizon Messages for our texting, and we both have the settings so that integrated messaging is enabled to sync with the web and tablets we have
If I have WIFI enabled and I receive a group message, when I try to respond my *send* will fail. If I turn off WIFI, the MMS group message will send without issue. I've tried this with both Verizon Messages and Handcent, and both suffer the same issue. So it is something at a lower level than the application.
I'm temped to try a rooted stock of the latest ROM to see if the problem goes away.
EDIT: just noticed your PS, looks like we are in the same boat...

Yep, checked those options in both messaging apps.
Glad someone is having the same symptoms as me, hopefully we can figure this out.
I did use the stock rom with root for a few days when I first got the phone and I dont remember having any issues.

So this is all I could find regarding an issue a friend of mine is having.
Fully stock Nexus 5 using GOSMS for messaging.
The messages show up in notification, but don't show up inside the SMS threads.
Eventually they appear, but not always.
Also their messages don't auto sort into the order they are received.
Re-installing didn't fix that, installing another sms app didn't sort it either.
Any suggestions short of doing a full wipe ?

How about on the stock messaging app or on Hangouts?
Have been using Textra as a messaging app for years. With new Pixel 4a I discovered I was not receiving all messages sent from others to me using Textra. Out of curiosity I enabled google's messaging app and suddenly all of my messages came through. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this might be?
I personally don't care for google's philosophy and don't want a "Chat" app. Just want to send and receive messages with occasional pix like I have been doing for years.
When you installed Textra, Android should have prompted you if you want textra to be your new default sms/text messaging app. If not, try uninstalling it and re-enable google messaging, then reinstall textra.
If that still doesn't work then maybe this might...
I think google's built-in messaging has it's "chat" features enabled by default, which I think configure your cell companies network for it in a particular way ("Advanced messaging mode").
So, after uninstalling textra and re-enabling google's messaging, try to then go into google's messaging app settings and disable all "chat" features - so what you are trying to do it configure it as a "simple" text messaging app, which would then tell your cell phone companies network to switch to "simple" mode.
So, now when you install textra and replace google's messaging app, your network will then hopefully work 100% with textra in the "simple" mode.
I think what might be happening is that when your originally replaced google's app with textra, textra didn't know how to reconfigure your cell phone companies network back to the "simple" mode.

Thanks John. I did as you suggested including multiple reboots while uninstalling and reinstalling, and it now seems to work as I want it to.
Thanks for your assistance.
If anyone is still having issues with not receiving text messages on time, I suggest going to Settings>System>Advanced>Reset Options>Reset WiFi, mobile, & Bluetooth. Follow through to completion with on-screen commands and this may do the trick to settling your texting issues with the Pixel 4a.
