[Q] Missing 3RD-Party Wide tiles (7.8) - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I currently own a LG Quantum running Windows Phone 7.8 (used cab updater and made sure I used every language-pack necessary for my device), and I have a problem. Windows Phone 7.8 was supposed to allow 3rd-party devs to create the "wide" tiles. Problem? my phone refuses to use them. I know I have at least 2 or 3 apps with wide tile support (I read Nokia Maps has them, WP7Root Tools has a wide tile within its XAP, and I also read about SBUXCard having one), and maybe even more I don't know of. But no matter how many times I try they don't resize to their wide tile size. The built in apps with wide tiles work just fine though. Its only applications installed via the Windows Store (Windows Phone Marketplace) that have this problem. Any ideas?

[UPDATE]
Okay, some apps are working with wide tiles, such as the new twitter app. Why would some tiles work and others not display their wide tile? Is this somehow related to the live tile update issue? Or are the apps with wide tiles restricted to WP8 usage?

I know this. what im saying is I have apps, that from what ive read, the developers incorporated wide tiles in, but those apps, which the dev. implemented wide tiles in, are not displaying the wide tiles. At least to my knowledge (the wide tiles for these apps may be specific to Windows Phone 8. I wouldn't think so (I thought the tile implementation was cross-version, 7.8 - 8) but I may be wrong).

I read an article mentioning SBUXCard having one (though im starting to doubt its authenticity)
And WP7RootTools' XAP file contains a wide tile image (meaning instead of having Background.png & ApplicationIcon.png it has 4 or 5 tiles for
the different sizes and functions (application icon, normal tile, small tile, wide tile.)
Also read Nokia Maps had a wide tile. Again, im starting to doubt source authenticity (either that or the WP7.x version hasn't been updated to support wide tiles, since even thought 7.8 & 8 use the same code if im not mistaken for wide tiles, it still has to be manually implemented within a 7.x app for it to work on 7.8)
I may be wrong (I have been before). I hope im not wasting people's time...

Twitter Apps with tile/notifications

Do you know how many twitter apps have live tiles working form DM/mentions currently working?
I've installed birdsong pro, but notifications and live tile are not working. Motweets live tile still not working. The only one that is working is Beez but it only supports toast notifications, not live tiles.
Do you have the same problem, or I am the only one ?

Birdsong worked very well in beta 1.3 and in the final release 1.3. Beta 1.4 didn't work for me, but the final release on the other hand does. At least most of the time. But I can assure you, the guys are working on it.

I hope so, because until now it's the only app I've paid...
Beezz works with live tile. It gives you your unread tweet count up to 30. It stops working from time to time but you just need to logout and log back in... or if that doesn't work, registry edit the EndPoints and ManagedEndpoints (see WP7 Dev and Hacking forum).
beez works fine, the problem is that the tile doesn't update DM & mentions..
What's different between the Birdsong live tile and the beez one? When birdsong is working of course.
Edit: I guess I'll know soon enough. I just bought birdsong. I'll just wait for the new version to work to see the live tile.

Unread Tweets on Live Tile
Are there any other Twitter Apps that shows (like Beezz does) the number of unread tweets on its Live Tile?
I really like Beezz. The Design and Functions are great but whatever I do, neither logging off and in again nor deleting the registry keys make the Live Tile working for me.
So is there an alternative?

try uninstalling the app. I think there's no aterh app like beez around with unread tweets counter
Birdsong push notifications should now be working. There was an issue on the server that was re-architected over the weekend.
What issue are you seeing? If you cannot save your settings and get and error like this: RedBadger.Birdsong.Application.Services.Push.HttpNotificationChannelException
Error whilst opening HttpNotificationChannel
it is a WP7 OS bug. This is out of any developers control. Once a channel is corrupted you cannot create a new one which Birdsong needs to do in order to save the push settings. We believe the only workaround (until Microsoft issue a fix) is to do a factory reset which is not a very nice workaround at all.
If you are able to save the push settings, push should work for you.
Thanks

Now I can save my settings but the tile doesn't update... yesterday the tile updated almost in real time...
There is of course the lovely rowi client too, although Live Tile notifs are also on the shaky side. Apparently there is a bug in WP7 that causes a stop in notifs, was hoping this could be fixed in a little update, but more than likely will be the long wait for Mango
I cant access Direct Messages and Mentions anymore. It was the only client with count up the total count of tweets in the Live Tile. The fastest Client was Rowi. I took only 5s to load the complete timeline with GPRS. Great! moTweets has an outstanding feature, it loads a picture directly in the client and can save this to the device. No other Client does this. I love this feature. But he GUI is horrible. Sorry folks, but i dont like the GUI and ist far from working smooth (scrolling, swiping etc.) In most of the clients i can see, if the tweet is a new, unread one. Only in Birdsong and the official Client i couldnt find this feature. Rowi enterst he client where i have leaved it, great to find last tweet.
If i made a error in my test, feel free to correct me. Remember that there could be updates fort he app, where the one or other feature will be added to a client.

[Q] Single tile for Picture and Calendar?

I'm guessing this has been asked and answered many times but I couldn't find anything.
Is there anyway to have pictures and calendar use only a single tile instead of two?
Seems like a simple thing, but it would be nice to have the option to control those tiles a bit more.
Thanks
No current option.
The reason for the calender would be it has a lot of info to display on screen I guess, no idea for the pictures tho =P
I really like your idea, it makes a lot of sense. I'd love options like that too; it would optimise screen-space without sacrificing anything about the Metro interface (and if necessary the opacity of the images could be reduced to ensure the calendar text is always readable).
As Steven says though, it's certainly not possible with the current tiles. Some things would be possible with a custom programmed tile, but it wouldn't be perfect:
In theory an app developer could use a 'background agent' (part of an app which can run in the background on your phone every 30 minutes and update the app's tile(s)) to update a tile with a changing background and merge text from the calendar over the top.
Unfortunately in the current version (unless you're Microsoft) background agents aren't allowed to access the media library - i.e. the picture library on your phone (the required developer 'API's XNA.Framework and Media APIs are blocked to developers of background agents). It could, however, use pictures from a web service which would still make for a nice tile. That tile could still launch an app that views your phone's picture library, and I'm pretty sure it could access the Calendar info for display on the tile (The 'Microsoft.Phone.UserData' API required to access Calendar info is not restricted to background agent code).
One big problem with it is developers aren't allowed to create double width tiles. So I can visualise a single tile version of your idea; but even if a two-sided tile is used, the text still might look a bit squashed.
Do you think a single tile version (perhaps two sided) would still be of use? Or is the fact it can't be double width like the current tile probably a 'killer'?

[Q] Set tile icon on website fav?

Hi,
Its possible to pin a website to the startpage, the tile will take a screenshoot that is used as the tile icon.
Is there any way to change this tile on a stock(or custom) phone?
Bestregards
I usually use this, this uses the website logo most of the time:
http://www.web2tile.com/
Follow the instructions on the website.
EDIT: The video link on the website shows it in action. For me, this works fine, btw.

Thanks! That worked really great! Much work for a simple thing but if there is now direct way this workaround will do just fine.
Do you know how it works?
I am not entirely sure, no. It's some fancy Javascript bookmarklet, but I think it does this:
the web2tile site creates a temporary webpage using the favicon of the website and displays it using javascript. It then redirects the URL to your webpage and delays loading of it for 30 seconds, giving you enough time to pin the page to the homescreen. The tile will then show the image of that temporary page while directly opening the selected URL.
The Javascript used in the link looks really intimidating, though:
javascript:%20%20function%20jsonp(img)%20{%20document.body.style.margin%20=%20'0px';%20document.body.style.padding%20=%20'0px';%20document.body.style.border%20=%20'none';%20document.body.style.fontSize%20=%20'medium';%20document.body.style.color%20=%20'#000';%20document.body.style.backgroundColor%20=%20'#fff';%20%20%20document.body.innerHTML='%20<img%20src="'%20+%20img%20+%20'"%20style="padding:0px;margin:0px;width:100%"/>%20<p%20style="margin:10px">stop%20the%20loading%20+%20pin%20to%20start<\/p>%20';%20}%20%20function%20call()%20{%20var%20s%20=%20document.createElement('script');%20s.src%20=%20'http://www.web2tile.com/icon.php?url='%20+%20document.location.href;%20s.type%20=%20'text/javascript';%20document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s);%20}%20%20void(call())
EDIT: If one could find the image location in that script, from where it retreives the image now, one could replace that URL with his own URL to an image file and theoretically allow truly custom icons. I am not capable of doing so
EDIT2: HAH! Replace the red part with the URL to your Image: BAM! Done!

Nice work!
Give this app a shot . It works fine with most sites. "Bookmark tile creator".
If it didn't get you the favicon, image search the favicon which you want and save it in your phone. Then try "Tiler". With Tiler app, you can use that picture and pin your fav site to your start menu.

The problem with these apps is that you have to keep them installed to keep your bookmarks. Also, there is an annoying black pause when launching the tile. Not ideal, but probably "simpler" than the above, allthough not as "clean"
Yes. The app need to be installed. But that is fine for me considering I use many bookmark tiles with only one app installed.
On black pause, its obvious due to platform restrictions.
Let me try your above script for the purpose.
just to be clear, it's not my script, I do no know who runs the site www.web2tile.com
I just modified the part where it's looking for the image. This method is not without it's drawbacks though:
- the image should preferably be sqaure, otherwise you'll get the text on the bottom of the page as well
- if you want a custom image, you have to find a place to host it. Using skydrive works fine, though.
I missed your first post. Sorry about that.
Hi,
I am the developer of Bookmark Tile Creator. Thanks for trying my application!
I tried Web2Tile when I first got my WP7 and it was great but I found that it
could be simpler which is why I decided to create an application that served a similar purpose. I developed Bookmark Tile Creator for myself and it is what I use.
Bookmark Tile Creator gets all images that have references like for example 'logo' in them so that they can then all be displayed and the user can select which they prefer to use as a tile.
There is a splash screen that appears very briefly when a user uses a tile created with my app.
The reason for the inital 'splash' screen is that Bookmark Tile Creator is actually launching the browser and this is the only way to do it.
I have recently submitted an update that fixes a few minor bugs and am waiting for it to be certified and published.
Fixed a rare case when an image is selected and the
tile isn't created.
Fixed an issue when back button is pushed after using a tile created by the app and it takes you back to the 'splash' screen.
The next release will support more image formats.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any feedback / suggestions for my Bookmark Tile Creator!

Nice, So the tile is created with its thumb and it does not need to go online to get the thumb? How about uninstalling Bookmark Tile Creator, will the tiles still work as before?
of course does it need online access. Just like web2tile it grabs the image(s) when creating the bookmark and then apparently lets you select the image you want (whereas web2tile by default uses the favicon or you can point it to a specific image by editing the javascript before creating the tile).
Both methods do not need to get online to grab the thumb once the tile is created. So, with the modified web2tile method you can delete the image from your webspace as well after you created the tile.
Bookmark tile creater pros/cons:
pro:
- easy, fast
- you can select your icon
cons:
- you need an extra app for that
- small delay upon launching a tiled bookmark (that's simply a limitation of the system)
web2tile pros/cons:
pro:
- if you're happy with the favicon, it's easy and fast as well
- using builtin system feature, no need for a third party app
- because of the above: no delay upon launching a tiled bookmark.
cons:
- no customization, or at least a lot more complex approach to do so
EDIT:
both have the disadvantage that there might be webpages that don't work with either method. My carrier has a dedicated webpage that allows me to track my data usage. This website is only accessible from my mobile connection (won't work via WiFi or PC), presumably an internal webpage. It wont work with web2tile and bookmark tile creator as both can't access the website since they are not able to reach this internal site.

Correct, the the images are stored in isolated storage.
If you uninstall the application your tiles will be removed along with it.
Bookmark Tile Creator will improve when I add .gif support in version 1.3. The reason it wasn't in there from the get go is because that format is not natively supported.
@knee_guts: Just a quick question. With the gif support, and if it's a animated one, will the live tile icon also replicate the animation??

[Feature Request] Some suggestions

Hey! I started using OMNI a month ago, and I can tell it's my favorite ROM. I'm missing some features and I have some suggestions, so here's a little list:
- Mobile Service tile flippable, that sets between 2G only, 2G/3G, ALL
- It'd be nice if the service tile itself shown a little "x" when mobile data is disabled.
- Sound tile with options of user's choosing (sound/vibrate, vibrate, sound, mute)
- Stay awake tile that prevents the screen from timing out
- An option to always agree to Google Location Consent, it's a pain when switching between different location modes in the location tile
- Increasing alarm volume (I'd be SO thankful for this one)
- An option to enable black background instead of a black/gray gradient (saves battery on AMOLED screens and looks better in my opinion)
- An option to set notification drawer transparency
- Notification that quiet hours are enabled (on the right side of the notification bar)
I'll update the list as soon as the features get implemented or I think of something new.

Request FileExplorer bundled in OmniRom
To Omni Devs. Excellent work and concepts in your OmniRom KKat 442.
Request is to include a basic or EsFileExplorer bundled in your release ROMs.
Reason being is to give direct access to sdcards. Mainly ( in my case ) to install saved personal app/apk.
Without the need of googleplay&accounts etc.
Also for real Noobs who may not have Google accounts/internet etc.
Hope you see my point re file explore.
Realise you may implement app/apk installs via Document explorer in future releases.
Cheers bmad.

You could simply make a flashable zip or install it via adb.
i would like to make one more suggestion, for a feature i think it'd be great, it may take a bit of space after a while but anyways..
just think if omnirom could save you time and money by increasing internet browsing speeds and decrease data consumed to do so all in one feature (please note this method might not be for everyone). to do this would be to cache all the websites you visit most on to your internal,or external sd card or otg connected drive, with all options optional. i have not a clue how to do this or even where to start but just a suggestion for someone to maybe (hopefully) look into.

You must spend a lot of time on there if that's true XD
Loving this app, especially the Root Features. The 'Mode' Tiles are awesome. I haven't even had the chance to play with all of them.

Glad to hear it man, I am about to start redesigning the UI and developing it beyond just a quick settings application
Wow! Nice app!
Fantastic. Thanks for releasing it!
Hi, great app!
I'm having trouble adding one tile to the menu. I activated the "Inmersive Mode" tile. But when I try to drag and drop to the active tiles, it just disappears after passing over the division line.
(Mi device is a Moto Z)
Thanks in advance for your help.
Direct Call
Hi there, nice work,
Is there a way to add a direct call shortcut to the menu?

Awesome, mate. It really rocks and make the LeeDroid Beast-mode Rom even more useful with the numerous possibilities in quick tile settings
Thx a lot for this wonderful tool, mate.

What is the LeeDroid Beast-mode Rom ?
Edit:
I'm guessing its a Rom specifically for the HTC 10. I'll have to check it out

It's an Android bug, tracker for it is here
I've never really checked how widespread the issue is, I have the same issue with users of my app, does it still persist in HTC's implementation or Samsung's I wonder

It's across the board in Android N, quite irritating.
You have 3 containers in edit view, the first is the active tiles container, 2nd is system tiles and 3rd is custom injected tiles.
The work around is, drag everything from the system tiles container to the active container, add what you want from the custom container and clean up.. a bit of a pain if you have a lot of system tiles, but it does the trick.

The biggest pain is that the issue is marked as "Small" so it's probably not going to be fixed for a while

Let's make some noise about it, Google introduced the TileService API & overlooked that one rather large issue

I suppose it's only going to become more of a problem the more apps add tiles...
