[Q] Single tile for Picture and Calendar? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm guessing this has been asked and answered many times but I couldn't find anything.
Is there anyway to have pictures and calendar use only a single tile instead of two?
Seems like a simple thing, but it would be nice to have the option to control those tiles a bit more.
Thanks

No current option.
The reason for the calender would be it has a lot of info to display on screen I guess, no idea for the pictures tho =P

I really like your idea, it makes a lot of sense. I'd love options like that too; it would optimise screen-space without sacrificing anything about the Metro interface (and if necessary the opacity of the images could be reduced to ensure the calendar text is always readable).
As Steven says though, it's certainly not possible with the current tiles. Some things would be possible with a custom programmed tile, but it wouldn't be perfect:
In theory an app developer could use a 'background agent' (part of an app which can run in the background on your phone every 30 minutes and update the app's tile(s)) to update a tile with a changing background and merge text from the calendar over the top.
Unfortunately in the current version (unless you're Microsoft) background agents aren't allowed to access the media library - i.e. the picture library on your phone (the required developer 'API's XNA.Framework and Media APIs are blocked to developers of background agents). It could, however, use pictures from a web service which would still make for a nice tile. That tile could still launch an app that views your phone's picture library, and I'm pretty sure it could access the Calendar info for display on the tile (The 'Microsoft.Phone.UserData' API required to access Calendar info is not restricted to background agent code).
One big problem with it is developers aren't allowed to create double width tiles. So I can visualise a single tile version of your idea; but even if a two-sided tile is used, the text still might look a bit squashed.
Do you think a single tile version (perhaps two sided) would still be of use? Or is the fact it can't be double width like the current tile probably a 'killer'?

[Q] Hidden sexting album?

One minor annoyance I've always had with WP is the lack of adjustable privacy settings on images or albums. People often ask to play with my phone, since it's an OS that's unfamiliar to most, and they can end up flicking dangerously through my pictures. I've had similar experiences with friends' iPhones, so that isn't a WP-exclusive problem.
But this becomes especially troublesome with the Pictures live tile that randomly grabs an image from my phone and slaps it on my start screen (or, with slightly less annoyance, as the background of the pictures hub). Now, I think this is a great feature... but there are some images I'd rather not be displayed on my main screen, and I don't want the only solution to be unpinning the tile.
Laugh all you want, but I can't be the only one who's encountered this. Is there some core functionality that I've missed or an app that will ensure that images in a certain album are protected from being displayed around other parts of the phone's OS?
I just looked it up and there's a couple of apps in the Marketplace that can function as hidden picture albums. You just copy them over into the app and delete the originals from the Hub.
Also you can actually control what the Pictures live tile displays. All you have to do is take a couple of photos and select "Mark as Favorite" from the options. Then you'll see those photos appear under the Favorites section and those will be the only ones rotated onto the Pictures tile.
Thanks for the help! I didn't know that about the favorites--I've only ever marked one photo as a favorite, and I could've sworn it still rotated through everything. But maybe there's a threshold value of marked pics that will keep WP from digging into every album?
Not sure how I missed those apps on a search, but I found them now. Thanks again.
There's a better solution.
If your main concerns are the tile and the background, then you can add pictures to your favorites, and it will only show those as your tile pictures/backgrounds.. Maybe only favorite pictures you want people to see.

[Q] Missing 3RD-Party Wide tiles (7.8)

Hello. I currently own a LG Quantum running Windows Phone 7.8 (used cab updater and made sure I used every language-pack necessary for my device), and I have a problem. Windows Phone 7.8 was supposed to allow 3rd-party devs to create the "wide" tiles. Problem? my phone refuses to use them. I know I have at least 2 or 3 apps with wide tile support (I read Nokia Maps has them, WP7Root Tools has a wide tile within its XAP, and I also read about SBUXCard having one), and maybe even more I don't know of. But no matter how many times I try they don't resize to their wide tile size. The built in apps with wide tiles work just fine though. Its only applications installed via the Windows Store (Windows Phone Marketplace) that have this problem. Any ideas?
[UPDATE]
Okay, some apps are working with wide tiles, such as the new twitter app. Why would some tiles work and others not display their wide tile? Is this somehow related to the live tile update issue? Or are the apps with wide tiles restricted to WP8 usage?

I know this. what im saying is I have apps, that from what ive read, the developers incorporated wide tiles in, but those apps, which the dev. implemented wide tiles in, are not displaying the wide tiles. At least to my knowledge (the wide tiles for these apps may be specific to Windows Phone 8. I wouldn't think so (I thought the tile implementation was cross-version, 7.8 - 8) but I may be wrong).

I read an article mentioning SBUXCard having one (though im starting to doubt its authenticity)
And WP7RootTools' XAP file contains a wide tile image (meaning instead of having Background.png & ApplicationIcon.png it has 4 or 5 tiles for
the different sizes and functions (application icon, normal tile, small tile, wide tile.)
Also read Nokia Maps had a wide tile. Again, im starting to doubt source authenticity (either that or the WP7.x version hasn't been updated to support wide tiles, since even thought 7.8 & 8 use the same code if im not mistaken for wide tiles, it still has to be manually implemented within a 7.x app for it to work on 7.8)
I may be wrong (I have been before). I hope im not wasting people's time...

[Feature Request] Some suggestions

Hey! I started using OMNI a month ago, and I can tell it's my favorite ROM. I'm missing some features and I have some suggestions, so here's a little list:
- Mobile Service tile flippable, that sets between 2G only, 2G/3G, ALL
- It'd be nice if the service tile itself shown a little "x" when mobile data is disabled.
- Sound tile with options of user's choosing (sound/vibrate, vibrate, sound, mute)
- Stay awake tile that prevents the screen from timing out
- An option to always agree to Google Location Consent, it's a pain when switching between different location modes in the location tile
- Increasing alarm volume (I'd be SO thankful for this one)
- An option to enable black background instead of a black/gray gradient (saves battery on AMOLED screens and looks better in my opinion)
- An option to set notification drawer transparency
- Notification that quiet hours are enabled (on the right side of the notification bar)
I'll update the list as soon as the features get implemented or I think of something new.

Request FileExplorer bundled in OmniRom
To Omni Devs. Excellent work and concepts in your OmniRom KKat 442.
Request is to include a basic or EsFileExplorer bundled in your release ROMs.
Reason being is to give direct access to sdcards. Mainly ( in my case ) to install saved personal app/apk.
Without the need of googleplay&accounts etc.
Also for real Noobs who may not have Google accounts/internet etc.
Hope you see my point re file explore.
Realise you may implement app/apk installs via Document explorer in future releases.
Cheers bmad.

You could simply make a flashable zip or install it via adb.
i would like to make one more suggestion, for a feature i think it'd be great, it may take a bit of space after a while but anyways..
just think if omnirom could save you time and money by increasing internet browsing speeds and decrease data consumed to do so all in one feature (please note this method might not be for everyone). to do this would be to cache all the websites you visit most on to your internal,or external sd card or otg connected drive, with all options optional. i have not a clue how to do this or even where to start but just a suggestion for someone to maybe (hopefully) look into.

[APP][5.0+]Texpand - System level text expansion without root

Do you type your name, email or address multiple times throughout the day? If yes, then Texpand is for you. It will save you lot of time if you set it up right. Texpand is text expansion app designed to assist you with your frequently typed texts. It is a bit different than other text expansion apps that you might have used in other platforms; it uses floating windows to assist you with your typing. The demo video above shows thoroughly how to get started, it is a must watch to get the most out of it. It includes the following features:
• Sort you phrases by usage count, last used time, shortcut name and phrase
• Backup and restore you phrases to/from Google Drive or your local storage
• Floating window to let you complete your expansion if you type your shortcut correctly or to show you
suggestions based on the word you typed or selected
• Expand by selection e.g.: if you select name and you have shortcut name defined to expand to your full
name the floating window will show you either complete your expansion green button or yellow suggestion
button
Settings:
o Specify if shortcut name matching is case sensitive (case sensitive by default)
o Whether to add space or not after expanded text
o Whether to show floating indicators while typing. Note that if you disable floating indicators text
expansion will be immediate i.e. when you type the shortcut text it will immediately expand to its
corresponding phrase.
o Exclude apps from text expansion e.g.: if you don’t want to expand text in a particular app go to
Settings > Exclusions and click the plus(+) button then choose the app you want excluded from the
list of app then Texpand will not expand text on the apps you add to exclusions neither will it show you
suggestions. To remove an app form exclusions click it from the list of exclusions then dialog will
prompt you if you want to remove it click yes to remove it.
Known cases where Texpand will not work:
• If the app is not developed using standard Android SDK namely PhoneGap SDK that uses HTML5 for UI
elements. Texpand only works if the app uses native EditText widget but stay assured that this is what
almost all apps use.
• Texpand will not work on password fields but this is by design not a limitation. Because if text expansion is
enabled on password fields it may interfere with what you think you are typing. Note that some app have a
show password option if the password is not being masked by dots or asterisks then it is not regarded as
password field so Texpand has no way of knowing this is a password field so it will expand your texts as it
will on normal input fields.
• Texpand does not support input fields on webpages
• Word processor apps use highly specialized input fields, they are not currently supported but I am trying to
find a way to make them supported by Texpand.
• Text expansion by selection may not work in some apps, in which case the apps choose to handle selection
themselves without notifying the system.
• Finally floating app like Facebook chatheads may cover the floating indicator in this case you could expand
text by disabling floating indicators. In the future I will add app preference settings that will let you disable
floating icons on specific apps.
P.S.: If you have more issues I will be happy to hear from you go to settings and click send feedback.
Good but gives a warning
Thanks for this great tweak !
I really like it and it seems to be working fine and it is really customizable by its settings.
The only problem I found is that my antivirus (avast) is giving a warning and prompting to uninstall it. I guess it's a false Positive.
The other thing I would have liked is a small animation when expanding text although not an essential thing.
(also you say something about a video in your post but it isn't there ?)

AlienFever, I am glad you like it you see I am new to xda I can not post link to the YouTube video but go to play store and search for Texpand you will find a demo video in the playstote page
I noticed that with Facebook chat heads, the correction bubble appears underneath the chat head making it impossible to use with Chat Heads.
@Isaias Matewos, Can you also please add some macro features like Current Date / Day / Time. etc. Thanks for the wonderful app, I think it's a must app for every Android Power user.
Just wanted to thank the dev, I'm loving this app.

Glad to hear it man, I am about to start redesigning the UI and developing it beyond just a quick settings application
Wow! Nice app!
Fantastic. Thanks for releasing it!
Hi, great app!
I'm having trouble adding one tile to the menu. I activated the "Inmersive Mode" tile. But when I try to drag and drop to the active tiles, it just disappears after passing over the division line.
(Mi device is a Moto Z)
Thanks in advance for your help.

I've never really checked how widespread the issue is, I have the same issue with users of my app, does it still persist in HTC's implementation or Samsung's I wonder

It's across the board in Android N, quite irritating.
You have 3 containers in edit view, the first is the active tiles container, 2nd is system tiles and 3rd is custom injected tiles.
The work around is, drag everything from the system tiles container to the active container, add what you want from the custom container and clean up.. a bit of a pain if you have a lot of system tiles, but it does the trick.
