[Q] Help with battery life after S-OFF - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I recently S-OFF my One XL following Facepalm. Before S-OFF, the battery life was about 4 days with light use. After S-OFF, the battery life became a little more than one day with same usage. I'm using Viper XL 3.2.3, recently downgrade hboot from 1.14 to 1.09 before S-OFF.

But the only change was S-OFF, and the battery life changed drastically.

battery life
The real reason your battery life tanked is because you are running a jellybean build, the sense build rom do better because they have the cpu operating on one core most of the time( battery savings). The sense builds are just better when it comes to battery life, I can't say I have ever got 4 days out of this thing once.

S-Off would have no effect on battery life at all. But if you REALLY wanna rule anything out, wipe and reflash.

The Viper XL I am using is sense based, it is an option to choose whether to install sense during installation. As I said, the only change was S-OFF. I don't think I can get 4 days of battery life on senseless jellybean ROM even just standing by.

Thanks, I'll try it when I get home.

I guess i should rephrase myself, the ics sense based roms had a lot more power-saving then the current jellybean roms that are currently in use.

What appears to be the rom is probably apps that run better on ICS because they've never been optimized for JB. One bad app is capable of tanking your battery life.

The problem seems to resolve. I did not wipe and reflash the rom. But I did upgrade the rom(Viper XL) from OTA, and I also turned off the power saving option and turned it back on (I remember the power saving option was turned on when I did S-OFF, not sure if that's the reason.). The battery consumption was less than 10% over last night, which is acceptable comparing with over 20% battery loss the other night. I also found out that the screen will halt during OTA upgrade if I leave power saving option on. This problem also seem to go away if I turn it off before hand. It looks like that the power saving option need to be turned off before doing any change to the system.
Thanks for all your help!

Same exact problem here, ViperXL and just did the S-Off procedure about a week ago.
Battery like is horrendous ,, I have done two OTA updates for Viper, no change.
Google Services is using 57% of my battery and Android system at 28%, seems very high.

Well four days is rather unrealistic for any phn if you are using it . Low coverage area can drain battery. If you are using phone all day expect to put it on charger daily. I run latest viper and elementalx and if I dont use phone at all or turn on screen ill get like 38hrs. 15 hrs if phone in heavy use and that's uv my phone . 4 days is just silly to expect . Also it takes phone about 5 days for battery to settle when switching roms

[Q] Battery usage on custom roms

Hi there,
I am currently running on HTC stock rom with 2.3.4 but currently considering applying a custom ROM to get better battery mileage (i.e. more hours).
I see that all custom roms mention that one should get better battery usage because they have applied some optimizations. But is this real?
What I have understand so far is that battery life varies for every user because everybody uses the phone different with different applications (probably there aren't 2 phones with the same configuration) so any benchmarks are meaningless...
But... If you have used the stock rom and moved to a custom rom , what is your experience did battery life improve? I am assuming that you continued to use the phone in a similar way...
Currently I get between 12-16h hours on my stock rom, what should I expect if I move to custom ROM?
Currently considering moving to Android Revolution HD 3.6.3 XE.
Before being flamed, I looked and searched for the answer to this question but could not get any answer...
Thanks
for me the experience has been reverse... when on stock rom, i get better battery life but when i use custom roms I get worst battery...
Currently running Sense 3.5 and it has something really annoying with battery.. sometimes it would stick at 100% for one hour and then when i start using it for 10 mins it would come down by 20% in no time...
With ARHD 3.6.3 my battery would take too long to charge but with sense 3.5 it takes half the time to charge...
So using custom Roms you will never figure out how ur battery works..

This is misleading as this might be your experience but not everyone's.
I get excellent battery life with Sense 3.5 and I don't get any bad battery readings either.

My battery life improved noticeably with a custom rom. However, when you get a custom rom, you usually also pair it with an overclocked kernel which ups the speed but also reduces battery life a bit.
I'm running ARHD 4.1.3 with faux's kernel running at 1.5ghz and am still getting better battery life then stock. I can use my phone for a full day, not charge it at night, and then still be able to last to about just after lunch time the next day. With the stock kernel, battery life was even better but the phone was also slower.
There are a lot of settings that you can tweak to try and conserve battery life. I keep bluetooth and gps off, and I think that using the GSM antenna only instead of both GSM/CDMA helps, stuff like that.

really? I never got anywhere near close to that. Best was about 6 hours if I used the phone for anything other than talking.
I am currently on the revolution 3.6.3 XE rom and I can't stop smiling. I get a bout a good 8 hours of usuable (xm streaming, surfing, gaming and some slingbox as I have a hour commute each way every day) and about 10 hours with little to no activity. Light years from where I was. I have tried quite a few roms, but this one is a keeper. Try it

+1 on that. My battery life was horrible on CM7. I tried everything to fix from other kernels, radios and every battery calibration tip, tool and app. I just went back to stock. I was dropping 6-7% battery life while my phone was in standby. If the phone was in airplane mode it was fine. I also tried turning off wi-fi but that didn't help.
I get better battery life using the latest IC Rom. Not a heavy user, a few calls, few texts, 10 +/- emails, decent amount of web and twitter use though, little gaming. Take it off charger at 7am, and when I put it back at 11pm, I usually have 30%-40% of my battery still left.
I am using CM7 alpha9, which is very far from being release-quality. I had thought it was doing very well - 6 hours and still at 80%. But then I had a phone call drop using WiFi Calling, and I had to reboot to regain the use of the dialer. I was at 20% after reboot...
I noticed a huge difference with Revolution HD (no-sense script) compared to the stock ROM.
Very happy with the switch.
Best I got with ARHD and a stock 1.2 Ghz kernel was 1 day, 5 hours, and the best Ive had with ARHD and Faux kernel was about 12 hours.
Typically I was seeing about 8-10 hours with ARHD and Faux kernels. I just decided to try bricked last night so I cant really report too much, although today looks really good so far. I'm already at 10 hours 20 mins as I type this with 30% left. Typically I would be plugging my phone in after work getting in the car on the way home with the Faux kernel. I just flashed this kernel last night so it hasnt even "settled in" yet. Both non-stock kernels are running OC at 1.5 Ghz.
~T.J.
A lot of times people forget when flashing roms and such is to clear the battery stats, this will increase battery by a surprising amount.
When people flash New roms they don't wipe battery stats and that's why there battery life sucks. And yeah sometimes it is the Rom and or the way they use there phone.

Perfomance is better, but the main reason is Sense 3.5. I cant say it effected battery life badly.
CM7 has excellent battery savings.

[Q] Best ROM for battery life?

I get horrible battery life with nearly every ROM Ive used on my Sensation, sometimes drains 10 percent an hour with the screen OFF. I have all data off, no wifi on, no apps running, juicedefender ultimate, and underclock when screen is off, and I read about people who can get a full day while using the total potential of the device. I had the same problem on my old device, so I returned it to T-Mobile and still have problems on the device I got in return. I dont expect to get two days on battery, I just find it crazy that I can barely use my device without the battery draining rapidly. I've considered undervolting but every rom ive downloaded didnt support it, so I was curious if you guys know of any efficient ROMs that save a ton of power and can be undervolted. I'm not very experienced with this kind of stuff and every ROM ive used has been poor on battery life, so help would be appreciated.
I am using InsertCoin ROM and it is running fine.
I used to have a 3% battery drop per every hour the phone was sleeping on stock rom and ARHD ics. Then I tried Virtuous Inquisition and it fixed the issue. Be sure to install the rom with its appropriate radio.

ICS isn't fully stable yet, but seriously.. give that a try. My battery has doubled its lifespan. I have NO idea what htc/google did, but I get about 12 hours moderate usage and still around 50%. Getting 12 hours back then was what I was hoping I could hit! Now it lasts beyond my expectations
I've also read that you tried undervolting and everything. I just stayed stock and it's great, no effort! no custom kernel, OC/UC , it's amazing. If you read through the threads, I'm not the only one experiencing awesome battery
If you must know, I'm using InsertCoin but I think ARHD and all the other ICS roms will pretty much solve your problem

Ok thanks guys ill try various ICS roms over the next week and see if there's a difference.

Which ICS rom is providing the longest battery life with Anker 1900mah?

I have the Anker 1900 mah battery in my Sensation from T-Mobile and I'm currently using Android Revolution HD 6.2.1. I would like to know what rom is giving the best battery life for you guys with the same battery under your heaviest usage.
Sometimes I'm getting 10-12 hours under my normal everyday usage. I use my phone alot though so I would consider it heavy usage.
Please let me know your results!

I am using the same rom (1.5 Kernel) with you under T-Mobile.
Make sure that you are on top of your screen brightness.
Display is the most critical part in the device regarding to battery.
Even it comes before what rom you are using.
Hope it helps
Well if you are looking for something that has great battery life and is a ice cream sandwich rom, then I suggest you try the Virtuous Inquisition 3.0.0 rom. The moment you flash this rom, you will not be disappointed with any fc's or any weird bugs that could occur in other roms. Now keep in mind, this rom has been stripped from sense and only the camera and other small applications are remaining. And last but not least, I consider the battery really amazing. Why? Because it gets me through the day on medium usage. My medium usage is: 1 hour reading book, 5-10 calls, 20 texts, 35 minutes internet and some 25 minutes of music. Remember nobody can tell you the actual battery life that you will get because we all use our phones in different ways.
Have a good day.
Are there any guides on maximising the sensation battery life? I have an Anker, a generic 1700mAh and the stock Sensation battery (Not XE) but none of them seem to last more than 8 hours at the moment.
How can I best manage my display usage? I have it on automatic at the moment, but I'm sure I must be doing something wrong. I'm using Android Revolution HD 6.2.1.

Adjust it manually, i.e. make it as dark as you can while still being able to see it well enough.
Personally, I just leave Auto-Brightness on and my battery lasts enough to get me through a day.

What do you mean you got boot loop? Did you flash the correct firmware? The correct one is 3.24. Also did you remember to superwipe before you flash the rom in order to make sure that you have wiped everything?
Try those options and see the magic within the virtuous inquisition rom :]

Yes I did, on both occasions the ROM worked for about 30 mionutes, then FC'd, rebooted, got to the V splash screen, then rebooted again and got stuck on white htc screen. This was after flashing ShnizlonSettings_VI.zip, whether that had something to do with it I don't know.
Using Virtuous Quattro a3, I get through the day with heavy use, music, emails, browsing, irc, calls, few SMS and tinkering/tweaking.
Today it has been idling apart from a few SMS, and was on 81% at 9pm, off charge at 7am.
varies I guess
I have the stock T-Mobile battery and just checked its got about 7.5 hrs and 60% on the batt.
probably about 2-3 hrs of music and 10-15 mins of calls, plus maybe 20 mins of games so far...
I've got the Elegancia ICS on it, plus a buncha apps
Here you go buddy did a screenshot for you. Using Darkforest Rom 5.2.0 with true AOSP experience on sense by shnizlon. I'm playing zenonia 4 quite addicted at it, brightness is at 50, wifi never turned off. Hope this helps.
Im really sorry forgot it was anker battery question. Im using the stock battery of sensation xe. sorry bud.
Well guys I switched to Virtuous Inquisition 3.5.0 and it's provided better battery life for sure! I think just the bloat of Sense sometimes brings down battery life depending on the rom. Virtuous is also a little bit snappier and overall more responsive.
Just the other day I sent over 500 text messages and received just as many before I hit 60%. I never seen anything like that before. I had Wifi on and my screen at full brightness.

Bad battery life on AOSP ROMs

I can leave my phone next to my bed without touching it and lose 10% battery. On HyperNonSense i can not lose a single percent. This happens on CM9 and AOKP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jordan
Run it down fully a couple of times, see if it helps.
Did this happen soon after you flashed the ROM?
If yes, this is mostly due to the battery needing calibration (Fully charge your battery, boot the phone in recovery, unplug phone, erase battery stats, discharge your phone completely then charge it up again to 100%, and after that it should be better, and after one or two more cycles it should be even better).
Otherwise, it is probably your kernel forcing the CPU to run at max clock all the time, so check, if you use SetCPU or another app like this, if it is not set on max clock, or try flashing a new kernel, but even then a battery calibration always helps.
Do you leave the screen on the highest setting? Also, did you overclock it?
maybe you should go into recovery with a 100% charge and bwipe battery stats, because I'm using hyper sensation and my battery life is amazing compared to when I had the stock t mobile rom
I have been using ViperROM for almost a year and my Anker 1900mAh battery performs excellently. It gives me day and a half on moderate use while at least 24 hours on heavy use (keep wifi on all the time). But I do like to try AOSP roms and whenever I have flashed an aosp rom, battery life has always disappointed me. It hardly gives me 14 to 15 hours on slight use.
Is there a way to get at least a day on moderate use on aosp rom? I'm currently using android1234567's CM11 with sultan r52 kernel and i would love to use it for few months.

How many days do you use the ROM to arrive at these conclusions.
Only after the first full discharge (~ 10%) turned off the device and charge it Off.
then give us a report

I have benn using android1234567's CM11 with r52 kernel for almost a week now. I have recharged it to 100% after a full dicharge twice. Still the same results. Something is consuming the battery even when the screen is off.
You might want to try a few things such as :
- set brightness to a fixed and low value
- inactivate WiFi search even if WiFi if off (advanced parameters)
- use wavelocks detectors to identify draining apps or process (localisation and Facebook app are two good candidates)

AFAIK AOSP based ROMs will always perform worse than Sense based ROMs due to the HTC battery management being closed source. Hyper-nonsense still has HTC files under the hood hence why the battery lasts longer. When using CM10.1 my battery would last me about 10 to 13 hours without me hardly touching the phone, with Hyper-nonsense or De-sensed elegencia it would easily last over 24 hours. On Viper 5.0.0 I got 1 day 15 hours 13m and 24s with 15% charge left out of the bad by once.
I can't explain it, but , with Kernel ION 50->52.5 All latest KitKat ROMS Builds seems to act good

That's quite difficult to say since we all know viper is the battery killer.I have a 2years old sensation. I used viper for more than 6 months and I was like "damn! throw this off." Now i'm using AOSP and It's just what i was looking for. ::victory:

Viper XL 3.0 ROM and other JB based Sense ROMs give huge battery life increase?

Recently I tried the latest Viper XL 3.0 JB based sense ROM, and I've been getting incredible battery life. I am not sure why, but I think I am getting almost two days life on my One X with the same usage where I was getting about 14-20 hours with CM 10 stable or CleanROM 5.1.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
That's awesome. There's a battery thread in general if you want to see what other people are getting
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
I have been getting good battery life as well. Just perma-rooted my phone last week, and loaded this ROM up and loving it so far. Excited for the next update so I can do CPU tweaking
Lots of people seem to be getting better battery life on Sense JB.
But battery life increases are a difficult thing to accurately measure and discuss. Hours between charges is irrelevant without a discussion of screen on time. I've gotten around 2 days on just about every ROM since 2.2X (and maybe just a few hours shy of that on every ROM since launch) with low usage and around 3-4 hours of screen on time.
I'll bet there are even some people that are getting worse battery life on Sense JB. That's just how it goes. But on average, based on consensus here it seems that some significant power usage improvements were made with the 3.17 ROMs, as they were with 2.XX.
The battery threads are getting way too long, and the Viper threads is in the dev section and I am too new to comment there, so I thought a simple QA post would do. I have noticed better perf on the JB Sense 3.x roms than the ICS roms or than CM 10. I mean I easily get 1.5-2 days battery life with the same usage.
What I am not sure about is, whether or not the better performance in CM (it feels noticeably more responsive than the sense roms) causes me to more actively use it / fiddle with it where on a sense based rom I would leave it put unless I just wanted to use it for someting specific like make a phone call or take a photo.

Yup. On ViperXL 2.4.1 I was getting 14 hours on battery with 3.5 hours screen on time.
On Viper3, I get about 8 hours on battery with 2 hours screen time.
No real wakelocks either. Just did a full wipe and reflash so we'll see
I am adding here my experience, i think that with cleanrom 5.1+elementalX kernel i was getting much better battery life than now with jokerXL 4.1 rom and elementalX kernel. All with no overclocking. The truth is that, with my 4.0.4 setup, i had the brightness dim mod via the setup activated, lower low core frequency and lower undervoltage. But the difference in battery is really noticeable, i am getting about half the runtime i had. So, i am thinking of switching back, as i didn't see any real benefit, and update when a good rom comes up.
Of course, i have to thank anyway all the developers for their hard work to bring the best experience on the phone.
People that actually use their phones to TALK (I know, increasingly rare concept) you burn battery regardless of ROM. I hate sense and much prefer AOSP, but I have tried every ROM on this board and they are all about the same. For me, JB Sense was worse. CM10.1 (JB 4.2) has the best so far, just an amazing ROM.
In my case it doesn't matter because I'm constantly surfing the web. Navigation and actuAlly talkin so I noticed no battery life increase. It actually seems I lost about an hour since viper 3.0 so it really is based on how you use it.
I reverted back to 2.4.1 and surprisingly
I am currently at 17 hrs with 2 hours screen time and two hours talk time. I'm at 19%.
While on 3.0 I would have to charge it by now. But that doesn't been its not more battery efficient. Also when I first updated to 3.0 I was like a kid with a new toy and was turning my phone on every second and playing around with it.
Viper in my opinion has excellent battery life jellybean or not.

Wow that's weird to hear, the most I could get was 14 hrs on ics, getting 2 days on viper3.0. I think the main differece is how it sleeps.

My phone sleeps when I sleep. How long do you need the phone to last between charges? How many of us regularly sleep in a place without a power outlet?
