[SOLVED] Stuck in bootloader/fastboot, RUU: Error [140] - HTC Desire S

I'm having a serious issue with my device. I'm trying to roll back to s-on and stock GB for warranty purposes using this thread which I've successfully done before.
I flashed the ENG hboot and then the 0.98.0002 hboot using Android Flasher and the bootloader now shows the following:
Code:
*** Security Warning ***
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.98.0002
RADIO-3831.17.00.16_M
eMMC-boot
Mar 30 2011, 17:29:31
Now I'm trying to run a RUU (the same RUU which worked before) but I'm getting the following message on all the RUUs that I try - Error [140]: Bootloader version error
The RUUs I've tried are:
RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed
RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed

My device is stuck in the bootloader now - I can't boot into the rom or recovery. Is my goldcard no longer effective for some reason? Did I flash a corrupt hboot?

I have the official ICS RUU but haven't tried it because I don't want to upgrade the hboot if it's not necessary. Waiting for some sort of guidance on what to do from here - will be highly appreciated.

Re: [Q] Stuck in bootloader/fastboot, RUU: Error [140]
Misc_version
Sent from my HTC Desire S

Can't misc_version only be changed via adb? I don't have access to adb, only fastboot.

Yes, i think misc_version can be chenge only with adb

Any suggestions as to what I could do from here?

Re: [Q] Stuck in bootloader/fastboot, RUU: Error [140]
None, you really need to push the misc . version through adb, can't you get to a computer?

I do have access to a computer but adb doesn't pick up my device.
As per lowveld's response from the help thread, when I try to flash CWM from this thread via fastboot, I get the following error:
Code:
C:\Users\Admin>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-saga.img

Did you unlock your bootloader before trying to push the recovery

I have not - I'm a tad worried about that pesky *** RELOCKED *** warning that I might not be able to remove. Is unlocking my bootloader the only option I have right now?

Fraid so, it's the only way you can push anything. There is a way to remove the relocked, ill have to search for it though
Edit, can't find it. Amidabuddha might know how though.

Right - guess I have to use HTCDev after all. Will report back with the results.

Didn't you keep the code from the first time, you can use it again

I recieved my device with 0.98.0002 so I could s-off without using HTCDev.
Edit: looks like I have to download HTC Sync (160mb) and Android SDK (400mb) which might take some time. Will check in again after some coffee and a cigarette.

Looks like I may be in trouble...
Code:
C:\Users\Admin>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
...
(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.020s]
finished. total time: 0.030s
PS: my device is listed when using the 'fastboot devices' command.

It's almost 3 in the morning but I've finally managed to sort this out.
In short I installed the official ICS RUU, unlocked bootloader, rooted, lowered misc_version and then installed the original RUU which previously worked (HBoot 0.98.0002). Now everything is factory fresh, without any warnings in the bootloader.
Just to clarify, it was the misc_version that prevented me from installing the RUU which previously worked? If that's the case, how was it changed? Do certain roms higher the misc_version?

Ok, so im stucked in custom roms like Virtuous, Endymion
I cant flash roms like pre-rooted shipped roms, and normal RUU and also few CustomRoms like Cyanogen

I have installed CWM
When im trying to install RUU with exe in the signature checking it give me error [155] and installation is abort. WHen i unplugged my phone from usb there is information "Security failed".
When im trying to install any HBOOT ive got something like this:
Code:
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 3.102s
What can I do now?
I was trying also to downgrade my HBOOT with tutorials here, but after all steps i cant install RUU because of this 155 error.
I think its all because of this signatures and security.
Without unlock bootloader - when im doing fastboot oem lock, ive got ***security warning*** and LOCKED and only possibility to run is bootloader and fastboot.
And what i want to do? I want to have official newest ROM for my Desire S
Try RUU with Goldcard
Or the downgrade guide of Scanob it is in the Index thread in the Development section
I was trying with goldcard, i dont know maybe i did it wrong?
I tried with mmc2 and mmc0 and no results, i was trying few tutorial to made goldcard, no results. Maybe something wrong with my card? I have Adata 16GB class10. (format fat32 -> goldcard -> i put card into device -> install exe with RUU ->the same error)
from the tutorial of Skanob i cant make steps 3,4,5,6

use the link from the tutorial. I think it was the second one (00b300e71f0c81804738305553445303)
Btw RUU Error 155 means "Wrong Image"
Which version exactly you have tried to flash?
I was trying almost every version:
RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release_177977_signed

Is the same everywhere. As i said after unplug from usb after this error, its a hboot screen with "Update fail! Security Fail!"
Can you enter recovery?
Btw you can look through this thread also
MAN you should try extracting a rom.zip from the latest ruu 2.10.401.8,put it in your root of sdcard, rename it to PG88IMG then boot into fastboot and let it do his job.
Then you should have the brand new sense 3.0 stock rom.IF you made it reply me and i ll guide you to downgrade the hboot, root,s off with revolutionary.
@amidabuddha yes i can enter recovery, i can also boot recovery on phone from my PC (fastboot boot recovery.img)
i can also flash recovery without any problems.
@Costinutz32 i did it, donr work, i mean its booting and start doing something but then aborting and back to bootloader.
The same with your number for gold card. error 155
I am having this exact same problem with my Desire S. For some reason the new bootloader of HTC has some sort of protection against goldcards. I tried more than one goldcard and neither worked. I can only flash custom roms and need to flash the Boot.img manually. My HTC was branded too, to Vodafone.

I think that some of the solutions may help.
The last resort is J-TAG if you have a repair shop near you that offers that service

So you dont find any solution? But its weird, the others can downgrade new bootloader, and flash RUU without problems...
There is a possibility that it is caused by wrong drivers for Windows?
EDIT:
OK i will check those threads! Thanks!
Can i use someone's else backup to restore my phone? It will help? It will back also a hboot?
There is no solution in those threads ...

No the backup is not including the bootloader (hboot).
Your CID is T-mobile. Use misc_version with 1.30.111.1 and try the T-Mobile RUU again

forgot 2 turn fastboot off before loading new rom?

hi......i forgot 2 turn fastboot off from setting\power......while switching from CoreDroid_Sense_3.5_26.1.12_RV to Android_Revolution_HD-4G_6.3.2....... so now my phone not booting & can't write recovery............just load in hboot\fastboot...but after that nothing just the t-mobile screen for hours.......now what to do?
Has nothing to do with fastboot. I bet you are unlocked with HtcDev.com and all you need is to flash boot image separately after flashing the rom. Look for details here in the forum, it was explained many times.

HTC Sensation blocked on Bootloader

Hello,
I have a HTC Sensation who is blocked on Bootloader. It is on S ON (HBOOT-1.17.0008).
It was bricked because I do a wrong S ON..
I followed this tuto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522351

Up
If you have access to the bootloader, you can use a PB58IMG to install a stock ROM.

finding RUU for you based on your cid is difficult
as you are on 1.17 HBOOT still then you can change your CID
so we will change the CID to europe unbranded one (HTC__001) or supecid which ever is sucess (note down your original CID)
and then will flash a EUROPE GB RUU (which will bring back your phone to complete life)
first to change cid
supercid:
fastboot oem writecid 11111111
if this is success then everything is fine...you can download any GB RUU version
(software version must be >= 1.45.163.4)
otherwise this should work
fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
then get the GB european RUU (again software version should be >= 1.45.163.4)
RUU threads
http://www.filefactory.com/f/c87a2330449af512/
http://www.shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Pyramid
http://goo.im/stock/pyramid/ruu
if XE then get the RUU along this line " RUU_Pyramid_LE_hTC_" (LE represents xe phone)
if normal get something along this line "RUU_Pyramid_hTC_"
once you downloaded the RUU
keep the phone in fastboot mode..connect to pc and then
run the RUU then..everything should go smooth
Ah, problem there is your HBOOT is too old for HTC Dev unlock, it's the original shipping HBOOT, HTC updated it to work with their unlocking method.
Regarding your stock ROM installing, error 132 means the ROM isn't correct for your CID. This might cause a problem as I can't for the life of me find an SFR RUU anywhere.

Rusty! : I'll try to find a rom for my cid
Now i have a error 140 : error of bootloader with this rom

Annoyingly, whilst you have the right CID, your mainver is newer than that ROM, you need to find one that's 1.45.163.4 or newer
Rom Vodafone_FR newer than 1.45.163.4 if I understand.
I put a research
EDIT: It seems that there is only updated to version 1.45.163.4 has higher and no roms :/
Yep that's correct, you could always try getting it repaired under warranty... I can't find a suitable RUU anywhere
Unfortunately I do not have the invoice so I can not go into collateral :/
I bought a faulty phone on Tuesday from a random advert. On Wednesday I called HTC's warranty service to tell them the fault, on Thursday they picked it up and (according to their tracker) they're repairing it today.
I sure as hell didn't have a receipt for it
can you check the cid once more?

Help! N00b broke his Sensation :(

Hello all,
So I tried rooting my phone yesterday, found out I was on 1.27.0000 and almost gave up but then I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632553&highlight=downgrade
I got root access and then (here's where I did the stupid bits) I skipped doing the S-OFF bit, skipped backing up my current ROM and chucked Cyanogen 9 on there.
Now it just loops at the C9 boot up screen.
I've tried the S-OFF step after but get an error that it 'cannot find smart_IO.crd'
I've tried downloading an RUU.exe. If I run the exe from fastboot USB I eventually get an error and on the phone it says Security error.
I've extracted the ROM.zip from the RUU, renamed it to PG58img.zip, chucked it on the root of my sd card but this doesn't appear to do anything.
I've tried installing the zip - nada.
Tried overwriting my ROM with Elegencia, seems to install ok but I still get the C9 looping boot screen.
Any other tips? I've searched and searched the forums and tried everything I can find!!
nw extract the boot.img from the last rom you've flashed
keep that in your adb folder (folder where you got adb.exe)
connect your phone in fastboot/bootloader to pc (phone reads "fastboot usb" after that)
then open command window from the adb folder
type this command
fastboot flash boot boot.img
then reboot using this command
fastboot reboot
then it should boot
after that immediately i mean IMMEDIATELY read the below guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
read read read the above guide completely ..understand what different you need to do (ppl with S-ON and unlocked bootloader) TO PROPERLY FLASH A ROM
Didn't help I'm afraid.
Boot.img went down fine, rebooted and still get the CM9 bootloop.
I looked at the guide anyway and the author linked to another boot.img so I tried that too, same thing.
first check the md5 of the downloaded cm9
use this md5 checker to verify the md5 of the rom (if you got no md5 tool)
then do a complete wipe ..i.e wipe /boot /system /data and factory reset
flash the rom again
then extract the boot.img from the cm9 rom and flash it via fastboot (as explained earlier)
OK got the tool, verified the md5.
When I do a wipe data/factory reset I get an error:
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
It then completes.
Same result however

format the sdcard and do the wipe again
Formatted the ccard (there's now not a singe thing on it, even had a look through windows.
Same thing when I wipe though
Pushed the boot.img again and now it freezes on the white HTC boot screen.
Progress?
Tried the RUU.exe again but still go the same security error

AHH F**K it we'll try fresh/from starting completely
first post the complete details present in bootloader
also the output of the following command
phone should be connected to pc from bootloader and then open command window in adb folder (folder where you got adb.exe typically C:/AndroidSDK/tools or C:/AndroidSDK/platform-tools)
and then type this
fastboot getvar all (post everything except IMEI )
then we can decide what to do next
OK.

everything seems alright ..so i presume the recovery is the culprit
follow the below guide completely to the letter (even install ARHD ROM ..lets get the phone booted up first..then you can change the roms )
flashing ROMS with SON and HBOOT 1.27
That did it!!
I was about 2 minutes away from smashing this phone to pieces but you saved the day!
Thanks man!!

Many thx for reply
I'm not sure why its not working need a bit more info but why not just rename to PG58IMG and flash through hboot?
Or use 4ext app from playstore

You are s-off but your bootloader is locked. Unlock bootloader via HTC dev and the problem should be fixed.
Dosnt jupontubear hboot allow fastboot commands

Hi,
If you are s-off,then do NOT use HTCDEV.
This will probably screw up your phone.
@aranna
If you have a locked bootloader look HERE
Use the :
HBoot 1.27.1100 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100)

Hmm...that happened to me after I s-offed my sensation and all I did to fix it was to unlock it via htc dev...i guess i did it the wrong way, but nothing bad happened to my phone though...

Hi,
I am glad nothing bad happened to your phone.
But I have seen many instances of problems caused by using HTCDEV with s-off.
Kohr-Ah's solution is simple and effective.
Hum... i hope i understand well.. Here my complete current data
HBOOT 1.29
version-main: 3.33.401.153
cid: HTC__203
mid: PG5813001
As i understand i should download this one
Step 1) HBoot 1.27.1100 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100) => downgrade to HBOOT 1.27
Step 2) Flash recovery with fastboot (can i use 4Ext Recovery recovery bin image ?
Step 3) HBoot 1.29.0000 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.27.1100 to 1.29.0000) => Go Back to HBOOT 1.29
I'am right ?

No need for step #3
You can stay at 1.27.1100 hboot.. Changing to hboot 1.29 doesn't give you any advantage or benefit... There is technically no change between 1.29 hboot and 1.27.1100 hboot

do via fastboot way
copy the PG58IMG.zip to your adb/fastboot folder in PC
then connect the phone from bootloader to PC (if the phone says FASTBOOT USB that means it has proper connection)
then open command prompt from your adb/fastboot folder and type these commands one by one
fastboot erase cache (if failed ignore it )
fastboot oem rebootRUU (black screen with green HTC )
fastboot flash zip PG58IMG.zip (this will do the flashing of hboot )
fastboot reboot-bootloader (reboot to bootloader )

WONDERFULL !!!!!!!!!! WHAT ELSE !!!! EXCEPT MANY THANKS !!!! S-OFF / 4Ext installer / HD REVOLUTION
Today I want to flash the cwm custom recovery to gain root and further install 4EXT. I have never done this before.
But I stuck on the first step:
I used an other thread (click here, but it's German). At the beginning, the author provides a collections of tools including the cwm recovery for step 5.
After entering the command shows:
C:\adb>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (4618 KB)... OKAY [ 1.094s]
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.411s

I did some researched and found this thread. I used the cwm recovery from that link step "flash the recovery".
But it shows the same error:
C:\adb>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.9-pyramid.img
sending 'recovery' (4876 KB)... OKAY [ 1.128s]
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)

Here is a current photo of my bootloader.
I unlocked it with revolutionary while GingerBread was running. After that, I debranded my device and installed an official HTC RUU without branding (GingerBread) and did the update to ICS and via OTA to the latest provided version (see my signature). After that, it shows S-OFF but also *** locked ***
I´m not sure, what I have to do to gain my destination with 4EXT (requires root and this requires cwm) and finally Android Revolution HD or DarkForest.
Should I flash the universal firmware from here?

I don't want to brick my phone or my it unusable, so I´m very carefully.
*** EDIT:
I fixed the first step as follows:
I created a new zip file named "PG58IMG.zip". I put the recovery.img and the android-info.txt in it. The MID and CID in the txt-file have to match to my device. After that, I put the zip file onto my sdcard into the root directory. Then I started my device into bootloader and accepted the requested update. After that, I got my cwm recovery.

because you had a locked bootloader that's why you couldn't perform fastboot commands
you had to flash the pg58img.zip from bootloader as you did
it gave you also a patched hboot which is unlocked

His problem is exactly as u said, he has to unlock bootloader via htcdev again. I had to do it with my old sensation because i flashed an ruu so then the bootloader became relocked but still s-off so to use fastboot commands again i had to unlock bootloader.
