I'm on JB and DON'T want to flash my XT926 back to ICS to get root. Finally it seems there's a way to get root on 4.1.1 but obviously I need to make sure...

ive been trying to root my recently updated 2.3.6 skyrocket and just cant seem to get it.
i was on 2.3.5 and rooted lat week, performed the OTA 2.3.6 update and lost root (didnt install rootkeeper)
ive tried all the methods and none of them work. ive tried
S2root
SuperOneClick2.3.3
V4Zergrush
and none of them work.
ive tried searching the entire forum for Root 2.3.6 on the latest OTA and cant find anything.
i can only find root options for the OLD 2.3.6 that was released months ago and retracted by AT&T.
is the latest 2.3.6 not possible to root yet?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Use Odin (link posted above). Follow the instructions VERY CAREFULLY. Do not check re-partition or you will brick.
Good luck!
i dont want CWM though.
my last root process i was able to root and retain stock recovery image so that i would have no issues with future OTA updates.
is rooting no longer possible with out having to flash CWM now?

I didn't get the OTA but have been running Silver's LA3 rom, so I haven't tried to root from stock LA3.
But I guess I'm puzzled as to why you wouldn't want cwm...
At any rate, if you really want stock recovery you can flash it back in Odin by downloading the stock 3e recovery from seanzscreams thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446566&highlight=fix+fc+s (you wouldn't need to follow all the instruction there for your purposes, but you can get the 3e recovery to flash back). Just download and unzip the file there. Stock recovery is in the zip.
hi i need help rooting my nexus s i returned it back to stock 4.0.4 and i wanna find the eazy way to root
Unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery, etc etc.
You will lose ALL personal data, sdcard and all. No other way for 4.0.4 currently.
is there a guide how to do that ?
have never used fastboot to flash
I just bought the TF700, and have a few questions about the functionality of upgrading to JellyBean.
Primary goal: Root (to wipe bloatware) and upgrade to JB from ICS (without unlocking and therefore void warranty).
From all the reading Ive done, it looks like it appears fairly easy to root from ICS, but everything dealing with JB seems to require unlocking. Is this true, and if so, why?
If I simply root from ICS, then upgrade with the stock JB .zip from Asus, will it wipe my root as well?
I want to keep things simple and just run JB with all the bloatware cleaned out. This is for the fiance', so KISS is the moto for all of this
Thx.

1. We can't root while on JB because our dev have't found a way to do it yet. When unlocking, It allowed us to to install custom recover and use it to push superuser app(root app) to the OS or flash already rooted rom to our device,
2. Upgrading from ICS to JB with OTA root keeper will preserve root, therefore you should have root after upgrade to JB. But if you don't have root and you already on JB then you only have 2 options: a) downgrade back to .30 to root or b) Unlock the device to install custom recovery and use this to push root or pre root rom to our device.
Hope it clears for you.

Perfectly. Since Im still on stock ICS, I can simply root as normal, then OTA for JB upgrade. This is exactly what Im wanting to do, just needed the clarification. Thanks!

Is it safe to downgrade from stock jelly bean to stock ICS?
There reason I'm asking is that I wasn't able to get the Jelly Bean OTA to work so I manually flashed the Jelly Bean OTA using Odin. The one I flashed came pre-rooted and pre-loaded with a custom recovery. I want to have a completely untouched stock version of Jelly Bean, something I haven't been able to find here or elsewhere (I would get this by doing an OTA update to Jelly Bean from the stock ICS rom that I flash).
I'm thinking that the reason that I couldn't get the OTA to flash (it gave me an update fail notification every time) was because I wasn't completely stock on the previous ICS version, even though I had unrooted, relocked the bootloader, thawed bloat, etc.
If anyone could answer the first question, and the others I've raised, that would be great.
(I know that it is probably OK, but I wanted to double check since it was a major no-no to downgrade when I had a Droid Razr Maxx).
Yes, you can safely downgrade in order to take the OTAs.
Yes, your past OTA attempt probably failed because you weren't fully stock in some way. There is an error log stored on your phone that you could have checked for the exact cause. As a general note, OTAs require you to be on stock recovery, but not necessarily Unrooted.
You mention that you are unable to find a stock image file for the JellyBean update. This file is readily available here at XDA, and can be downloaded from the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Performing only Step 1 from that thread would leave you with a fully stock, unrooted, locked bootloader JellyBean ROM.
I just picked up a used One X to replace my Vivid.
It is running ICS 4.0.3 and the kernel is 3.08
I want to upgrade it to JB, but should i do that by means of unlocking it as is then running a custom rom?
My main concern is just being rooted and on JB (I am not too concerned about custom roms at the moment)
Also if anyone could link me to the best how-tos that would be great!

If anything, I'd root and S-off now. Then you'll always have the option of installing a custom ROM in the future.
If you're looking for the stock JB experience, try CleanROM.
Doesn't matter anymore, dudebro. You can root ATT Jellybean just as easily as ICS now.
It's generally never recommended to take an OTA if you can avoid it. Sure it's currently possible to root 3.18, but why go through the hassle when you can just go S-OFF now, install TWRP and flash one of the many Jelly Bean ROMs currently out for our device?

Completely agree. With each successive update, they keep making the device (AT&T version) harder to root, not easier.
Yes, a root method now exists for 3.18. But at the very least, being on ICS means you can try the corresponding root method; and if for some reason you can't get it to work, you have the option of then updating trying the JB root method.
If you update to JB now (before trying the ICS root method), its all or nothing. Either that root method will work for you, or you are screwed (can't downgrade).

YOu don't have to be running a custom ROM if you root/S-off on ICS, and then want to be on JB. You other options are to install a stock rooted JB ROM, or RUU to stock.
Once you are S-off, you can really do whatever you want.
Just be aware that if you root and SuperCID, you must get S-off before trying to run the 3.18 RUU or OTA. Or else you will brick.

Agree completely! The entire process to S-OFF, install TWRP, and flash a Jelly Been ROM is easy and makes life a lot easier for future upgrades. I was a total noob at the process on HTC devices until a few months ago. Haven't regretted it one bit.
