I tried to download the secret video recorder pro app
After installing the app and just ran the app I got this message on my android phone saying anti piracy sending data to law enforcement.... before i knew it all my data has gone on my phone all messages pictures and downloads gone. what to do for recovery? any help
Um, where did you download it from ?
I'm guessing not Google Play ?
Google "recovering deleted data android" or something, that's what I'd be doing to try to find this out for you since I know there are ways but I'm only vaguely familiar with them and haven't needed them so I don't know them by heart but I do know how to Google.

Astro File Manager is a well known and well regarded app. Most likely "aptoid" or whatever is shady.

Do you not look at app permissions before you install?
Aptoide is full of modified apps with added permissions to make calls and such...

Been using Astro FileManager for a few years now, I don't think it was the reason.
Hi folks,
Just wondering if running a program to root an Android can install malware (record or spy on my data, messages, etc.), and if so, are there any suggestions on how to find it? I've run 'Anti Spy Mobile Free' and have Avast! installed, with nothing found, and from the searches I've done, the main thing that came back was that the risk for getting infected with bad stuff increases when you root...but nothing about the actual process being bad.
I found the program on this site, so, I'm guessing it's fine. Just being a bit paranoid haha.
(I rooted it a few months ago, and don't remember what it was called, sorry)
Thanks for any help!
Anti Spy Mobile will give you warning or malware if there are any packages that has escalated spyware permissions - read SMS, record voice calls, etc. However even on rooted phones every process (service or background process) comes from an app (I mean if you are sure in the ROM that you are using and the apps installed, there's nothing to worry about). There are some exploits on Android but they can escalate the user permissions, and if they are used with separate spyware, the spyware should be an apk too. Many of the spywares are "hidden" (e.g. they don't have launcher activity) and they don't show on your launcher phone desktop - but you will still see them at the installed apps list. Both anti spy mobile and avast are searching through all installed packages.
Phone, in my experience is quite hard to get virus, provided you don't go anywhere pornographic or whatnot. Recommend avast if you are really paranoid.
Moved to General Q&A.
Thanks a lot!
install antivirus or antimalware to be sure!
Hello all,
I have a neighbor who has a son that has been getting into trouble...specifically a lot of illegal activity. I don't want to go to far into it but it is very serious trouble (not just smoking weed or whatever). My neighbor has installed the app "SMS Backup and Restore" onto the sons phone without the sons knowledge. All SMS will be sent to my neighbors email. The phone was rooted so I was able to make the app a system app so it cannot be uninstalled.
However, we still have 2 remaining issues.
1.) The app icon could generate suspicion
2.) If a user of the phone clicks "clear data" than the settings of the app will be erased and the SMS messages will not be received by my neighbor
How would we be able to remove the app icon from the launcher as well as disable the clear data button? One idea I had for disabling the clear data button was to get the source code of the app and going from there. The source code, however, is not publicly available so that plan has been thrown out the window.
Anyone have any ideas or is this completely impossible?
SMS backup and restore is not a "spying" app, all the backups are stored locally on the system, so your neighbor would still have the problem of retrieving said information, which I guess is your question. Your solution would to install malware on his phone that would sit on the phone without any icons or appearing in the applications menu. However, I would recommend that your neighbor talk to his/her son, rather than attempt to spy on him. If he finds out, it would only cause your neighbor's plan to backfire and probably make things worse.

The SMS Backup and Restore has an option where the backups can be sent to an email address. My neighbor has tried talking to his son before but the son refuses to listen to reason of any sort. Where could we acquire the malware to install on the phone?

[Q] Perhaps A New Android Virus Discovered? Anyone Else Seen "Plåÿ Störé One Two"?
No idea how it could have installed itself on my phone (the last app I installed was WO Mic, from the Google Play Store. I have this on another phone but it didn't get this virus from it). Just woke up today, and found it on here. It seems to have replaced the actual legit Google Play Store. I looked in the /system/app directory, the app is called Phonesky.apk. I looked this up online, one other person has/had my problem. He said even the Verify and Install option is infected, showing "Verify and Install one two three", but I can't confirm if that is on my phone because my phone never had Verify and Install to begin with, and even when I select to install an APK it does not appear.
Besides factory reset, is there anything I can do? I will try to put some sort of antivirus on the phone, but the other guy I saw who had this problem said his Norton Mobile Security didn't pick anything up.
I will soon be uploading both the Phonesky.apk as well as the Phonesky.odex file, just in case any of you devs want to tear down the package and look at it or analyze it or whatever. In the meantime, here's some pictures I took of it. Please refer to attachments to see them.

I probably don't have to say this, but just as a warning, UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, I'D SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF THESE FILES ON YOUR PHONE SINCE IT PROBABLY WILL INFECT YOUR PHONE IF YOU DO IT.
Also, I've noticed that this virus imitates Google Talk as well. No, not Hangouts, the old Google Talk. I did not have Talk installed on that phone before this virus came around. I don't see a Talk-like app in the app drawer, however I do get notifications of messages in the notification bar. The messages it notifies me for are actually legitimate messages I've received. I'm having a Hangouts conversation on my primary phone, and every time I get an incoming message from my friend, it shows up on the infected phone as well. When I try to actually press the Talk notification to see if it opens a fake Talk app or anything, it doesn't actually open anything.
EDIT 2: I uploaded a picture of fake Gtalk. Also, Zoner Antivirus did not detect anything wrong, even though I saw that it scanned over something called "Google Play Store one two three".
It's been a while, but I just wanted to say that factory reset did get rid of it for me. Others have said that the system language switched to Deutsch, and they switched it back to English and everything was fine. However for me, my phone remained in English the whole time. It also seems weird that this only happened on phones running Gingerbread...

I have been increasingly disturbed by the distracting number of ads I am getting. I even get video adds that open with full volume!
There seems to be no way to ID apps that are pushing adds behind the scenes. But I wonder, even in today's add craze world, if I'm dealing with some kind of bug or malware that cannot be stopped. I mean how could a developer, legally, push endless numbers of intrusive adds anonymously, in a way that makes them unable to be ID'd and stopped?
I'm getting an S9 soon and want to avoid infecting so I'm not going to transfer files from the S8. I will reinstall amm my apps from the Play Store. But what about app data? Can I copy data files to an ext drive then copy them onto the S9, after I've reinstalled the app? Of course, apps with a backup option wouldn't be a problem.
Hi, looks like some apps might be pushing the ads. Best option would be to locate the app pushing the ads. Unfortunately, you will have to manually uninstall and check. However, you can take backup of your apps and data with titanium backup beforehand.

You will have to use either google or samsung back up option to get your app data back. The data is stored on a part of the device you have no access to without root.
Get an ad blocker of a VPN. IF you use youtube then you can get an ad free version without root. I personally have not seen an ad in years.

Yes, it appears that is what is what's happening and that there is no way to ID the source. It seems, to me, that there ought to be a law against such an action. It's clearly deceptive and dishonest.
However, you can take backup of your apps and data with titanium backup beforehand.

I think that app required rooting, which I am not comfortable doing.
