[Q] wifi seems to be stuck - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

My wifi was working fine before but yesterday I tried getting on wifi and the position seems to be stuck. It seems like it was to connect but it wont connect, i leave my phone to try and connect for many hours and it doesnt. I go to mysettings to try and turn the wifi position to off and i cant. Ive tried restarting and taking the battery out and nothing helps. I got my wifi to turn off, and after a few hours without trying to get on wifi i tried connecting and its back to what it has been doing, like in a stuck position. I got it to go off by turning the phone off completly for a few hours. Any help is well appreciated. Thank you in advance. I tried attaching a picture to better explain this, but for some reason I cant even attach a file.

What rom are you on?

I've been having weird WiFi issues recently too. I'm stock. I disabled the ATT Smart WiFi but that doesn't seem to fix things. Tried one of the WiFi applications to reconnect when it detects the failure but that works only about 99% of the time.

My wifi doesnt even connect now, it shows that its trying to connect but it wont. The wifi icon doesnt go to full green, it stays on a transparent green, like it wants to connect but wont.

If it was me I'd flash the stock from and get it back to the way it used to be. But if you're on stock now and haven't done any flashing its going to take a lot of learning on your part. You are going to have to learn to use odin and where to get the stock rom. Not sure if you're up for that.

If you both are on stock call ATT. They will be more then happy to help you. With your level of knowledge that is your best course of action. They will most likely tell you to factory reset your phone. You will loose all your apps and settings. Tell them you want to back that up first. They should be able to help you from there.

Guess this is what i will have to do, i just dont no if something is wrong with my phone. Thank you for your help

Hey guys,
I've been using this phone (skyrocket ROGERS version) and have had this problem ever since I "upgraded" to ICS; and I've had so many problems with this phone! I've just learned to accept that my WiFi will never work consistently enough for me to use it so I just always use my data plan (luckily I've got a lot of data).
THINGS I HAVE TRIED
Cm 10 stable
Cm 10 nightly
Cm 9 stable
Miui
Flashing stock ICS
Flashing stock Jb
Things I haven't tried
Flashing stock gingerbread (because this was the only time my WiFi worked consistently, but why go back to gingerbread)
If anybody has ANY insight on this it would be very helpful
I guess I should also mention that I've flashed everyone of these ROMs that I listed at least 3-5 times just to ensure it wasn't just a bad flash.

Im about done with this G2X!

Wifi never stays on and when it turns off on its own the 4G or 2G is also DEAD NO CONNECTION!
Only way to get data back on is to turn off the phone! Anyone else having this issue? If you do what are you going to do, stay with it? Have you found a fix?
I have tried everything and nothing works. Could it be because of the ROOT? Hard reset does nothing accept waste your time.
Exchange it. I have no problem keeping any connection, rooted or unrooted.
Did you skip the initial setup? Skipping it has been found to cause a lot of connection problems. Or are you restoring Titanium backups? Restoring old Wi-Fi settings also seems to mess up Wi-Fi. Try factory resetting (not hard resetting) and not skipping initial setup.

Did everything everyone mentioned here and MORE. What has fixed it SO FAR is 2 things.
1- switched wifi sleep policy to TURN OFF WHEN SCREEN IS OFF. Which I don't like but it works because once the wifi router is of range the 4g data connection kicks in! Before it stayed dead when set to NEVER TURN OFF.
2. App called WIFI KEEP ALIVE in the market. WORKS GREAT!

A simple return would have worked so painlessly.
We're allllll still under the 14 days...
Absolutely no issues with my phone.
Just return the phone if you're having issues with it. Caps locking won't help you solve your problem. Returning the phone and asking for an exchange is easy as counting from 1-100. , it's just an isolated case.
I am also having connectivity issues. I fully understand, Here is my post.
I will give it some time, before I call it quits.
I have noticed when using Reader it will say "No Connection Retry" at the bottom if I scroll really quickly. It also does it a few times when I start up Pocket Legends.

When you say 14 days...thats how long you have to return it? Where did you buy yours? Where I'm at there are no T-Mobile stores. The only place to buy is Radio Shack...and Wal-Mart but I purchased mine at Radio Shack. They told me 30 days..is this true? BTW...I'm having no issues other than keeping 4G where at my house so I just switched in network settings to WCDMA Only when I'm at home and I keep 4G. I don't have Wi-Fi though so I haven't checked it yet...I tether my Evo and now my G2X for my internet for my computer.

I have opposite (minor) problem.
When I turn WiFi off - it keeps on trying to come back on. No issue but waste of battery. It connects almost immediately when it is close to my router.

Having an attitude like this really isn't going to get people to want to help you... you act like it's our job to fix your phone and help you.. using caps is basically yelling at us... so yeah, I dont know too many that would be willing to help after being yelled at like its our fault..
I rebuilt my phone for the third time today because I was getting force closes on the browser. I moved some stuff to SD memory so it wasn't the phone's fault. I noticed that the first time I turned Wi-Fi on that Wi-Fi calling automatically enabled itself. When it's on, all native data connections are disabled. You might want to look at the state of your Wi-Fi Calling app. With Wi-Fi calling running, the settings menu allows you to set it to "Wi-Fi Only." That was the default setting on my G2 so I'd suggest making sure that's what's selected.
There is a fix for this.

You said you've tried everything (meaning everything on your phone). Have you tried resetting your router? Issues like this tend to happen when:
1) There is spotty wi-fi connection
2) The router has run out of IP addresses to lease to devices
3) Wi-fi calling has been enabled and is not disabling automatically when it should (therefore leaving cellular data disabled)
4) There is a genuine hardware problem with your phone
That is what I can deduce (and I assume what most people will come to conclude) from the information you've given. Hope this helps.

[Q] Have to Reboot to get the Network Back<<<<

ok, so i have this thing for a lil over a month now i think maybe more....
but i have noticed that no matter what Rom or Kernel, even Stock.
if im in an area where i lose signal.....it may NEVER come back unless i reboot my phone. not a big deal in most cases but unless i look to check i may have no network for a couple hours before i notice that i have to reboot my phone. which means i get no calls and no text.
is there a fix for this or is this just something that i am experiencing??

that is strange that it does not auto-reconnect. my suggestion would be to try a different modem than the one that you have been using, if you have not already tried all 3. find them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173704
both odin and cwm flashable versions. maybe you'll have better luck with signal with a different modem, so that your signal doesn't drop completely at all.
on my SD card i have had all three modems for a while now that i had been flashing to see which one i would stick with. but my phone has been doing this since day one. on any rom or kernel or modem. i just wanted to know has anyone else seen this or is this just specific to my phone........
at that point i would be looking to get another one.

you may not have to reboot - have you tried just toggling airplane mode on and then back off? that restores data when it goes out for a lot of people.
if you've tried that, and it doesn't work... not sure what to tell you, except to exchange the phone.
i rarely ever have a strong signal - usually worse than -100 dbm, especially at my house - but i've never had the problem you are describing.
hope you get it worked out. maybe contact at&t or samsung for support also, while you are on the stock ROM.
So far the airplane thing seems to work. so i will ride with that, it doesnt seem to happen but once a day or so......so if i can just do that then i will just deal.
thanks for the idea bruh.

WiFi is connected even when 20KM away from hotspot

As title says, I went to the theatre today and realized I still had 5 bars of WiFi when I was 20KM away from home, was this a one time glitch or is it a known problem?
sounds familiar....
hey there,
I'm down here in New Zealand with a both versions of device, X & XL
my XL has the problem you speak about.
When i leave my house, it takes for ever to disconnect, pain of course because the 3G or 4G wont flip on while it thinks it is still on wifi.
When i return to my home/SSID the device takes for ever to reconnect, if it even does. i go to the wifi settings, and the connection initiation is just cycling, end attempts to connect, over and over.
I've thought i had fix it once before, by installing a new RUU. I was on RUU 1.77.708.3 Asia, could only find 1.77.708.2.
this seemed to fix disconnection on departure problem, but the cycling and hunting continued when i returned.
I have since found that this must be linked to the bluetooth. I say this because while the wifi is hunting/cycling i flip off the bluetooth and the wifi reconnects within seconds. I tested this more and with bluetooth disabled i have no wifi problems at all, but with bluetooth on, its gives my problems.
The second issue is the bluetooth its self. unlike my flawless desireHD, i can only stream music to my car head-deck, when i get a phone call, the music cuts out like it should, but the phone audio doesn't happen, been like that from the get go. wifi was a problem all the time because this dodgy bluetooth was on all the time so i could listen to music in the car and hopefully one day take calls in the car also.
well i have good news for me, today i flashed CleanROM.3.Standard .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
Today for the first time I can take calls over bluetooth in the car. this is good news because i was certain this was a hardware issue, even it it is, i am confident it can be resolved in the software now.
I'll do a few drive-by's my house tonight to test this wifi, see if that got resolved also. I'll let you know the result later.
I tell you all this in-case our issues are the same, it might save you some time... maybe.
good luck with, and check that bluetooth theory because i'm dying to know if its a common problem.
Cheers
Thank you for that very detailed post.
I also have bluetooth running (connected) to my car and it works flawlessly but it may be a cause for the WiFI staying connected as well. I will turn it off and see how it goes as the week progresses and keep this updated as well.
I would also like to flash clean rom but I am using the Rogers variant so I am worried it might not be compatible.

I did those drive-by's......
Me again...
I did those drive-by's of my house, unfortunately there is no joy for me, still the WiFi behaves the same as before.
Its funny, down here we have assumed that the X is the same as the XL apart from the cpu. But in reality they are two completely different machines.
So I turned off Bluetooth and the problem does not occur anymore, WiFi disconnects as needed but it is obviously not a permanent fix. Another problem is the WiFi being on and off with 5 bars swapping between 4G and WiFi...
CleanROM again......
OK, I was doing some more reading and have since found that the developer of CleanROM has released a GSM patch so the hotspot on his ROMs now work.
You might remember i said earlier in this thread that CleanROM.3 worked best for me but the hotspot didn't work so i couldn't use it.
Now i have CleanROM installed again, Hotspot works, bluetooth both Audio & Phone work, and the WiFi at this stage seems to be doing what it should without having to manually toggle the bluetooth on and off. No apparent bugs to report at this stage.
Software Info on phone says this version is built around 1.29.728.12. I don't know if that means all ICS version of that number are good or not, but again its a place to start. Its looking like some versions have the issue and some don't, this re-assures me that it can be resolved within the software. I don't mind testing this stuff, as long as the developers don't mind developing it, and its a good learning curve.... its all good.
Check this CleanROM work out, it could be your answer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
I'll check back in in a day or so and update you on my WiFi situation.
Cheers!
Thanks again for all your research and assistance.
I have the Rogers variant, should be no problem flashing it to CleanROM correct? Also, for each new CleanROM update, I would have to wipe and flash again? Seems troublesome.
Can you advise on the process required to flash the ROM? I am new to Android and the steps in the thread is not as comprehensive.
Many thanks.
hi there, show you how to load roms, thats a big job for me....
...I'm new to this myself, but i know a tutorial that will save me a ton of typing.
you need to do 2 things first, before flashing roms.
1,Unlock your bootloader
2,Install clockworkmod
have a look at this ,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647272
Study this thread, very helpfull. He explains how to install clockworkmod on your device, once you have that done you are 80% there, and you only have to do this process once, once done, flashing roms will always be the last 20%, you never do this again.
Infact flashing roms and backing up your own rom is a very simply task. the commands are on a list, just choose them as you go. To backup, wipe, and flash a new rom takes me less than 10 minutes.
Go to you tube and look at this, this shows you how Clockworkmod works.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOQEmQYFEeY
dont be freaked out, take it step by step, you'll be fine.
I also started this thread, regarding working roms for this wifi issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27585586#post27585586
no one has replyed yet, but it might yeild helpfull info later on perhaps
Thanks, I will do this shortly. Will unlocking the bootloader or doing any of the aforementioned steps give me the tampered signature?
Yes
yes, your phone will be marked.
Boot loader will be marked "Unlocked" , even if you relock it, its just gonna say "relocked" . nothing you can do about that.
The boot loader will also say "tampered" if you update the rom, but that msg dissappears completely if you update the phone via an RUU.exe
Can this hurt me with regards to warranty requests? I know I can remove the tampered status by flashing a stock ROM but I am concerned re: bootloader.

Cannot get data connection

Hi, been a member for a while, haven't posted before though, (yeah I know, I'm an ass who just downloads and flashes roms), but I have a MAJOR issue now. I tried the MoDaCo.one rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711783 and decided that it wasn't for me, so I restored my old backup of CleanRom 4.2 Standard. However, upon restoring this image, my phone keeps looking for a LTE connection, even though there is none available, and as such, will not connect to any mobile network. I have tried doing a total reinstall of CleanRom, i have tried resetting everything, i have tried changing the APN settings, everything I can think of. I even called AT&T to see if something was up with the data in my area, and it is all fine, in fact, while I was on the phone, the LTE turned off, (as LTE cannot run while the voice is connected for some reason or another) and I actually got a connection, so it is something with the phone trying to get LTE all the time. Is there some way I can fix thigs?
Also, after trying the MoDaCo rom, my phone only does a hot reboot/fastboot, unless I use the power button hard reset. Any help anyone might be able to give would be greatly appreciated, I can't really afford another $650 phone lol
P.S. If someone, ANYONE, can give any kind of help, I promise I will be coming in and trying to help anyone I can from now on. I'm a Linux Dev (Mint and SolusOS) so I'm not a complete and utter moreoff in terms of how the OS works.

Sent from my box of McNuggets.
thanx for the fast reply, wifi work exactly as it should, no issues there, but mobile data is all kinds of messed up. However, just for s#*T's and giggles I decided to try and see if maybe I could get miui v4 2.7.20 to work, and for some reason or another, mobile data works in this one. I'm not exactly sure what's going on, and to be honest, I think I'm gonna try a few roms and see if maybe its only default ice type rooms that work, which would prob mean that something in sense is messed up after the MoDaCo rom trial. If Anyone might have an idea of what's going on, I'm all ears.

Yeah, I think i may do that, maybe even relock the bootloader, unroot, and start over from a factory default and see if maybe I can get things repaired, or least working right lol.

well it's was fun, but i give up..

i've tried to re-flash the rom with the T699UVBMC5_T699TMBBMC5_T699UVBMC5_HOME.tar.md5 and although it seemed to working fine, (internet access etc.) i just can't dial with it anymore (while i can do that with another phone with the same sim) , add to that, the strange wifi connectivity issue i've been getting (as in hopping back and forth between roaming data and my access point) , the sluggish behavior i keep getting along with the extended battery reaching 45 deg Celsius (might be all the bloatware i couldn't remove), and now i can't even find another one (unlocked) in ebay.
just too much, the glide i have still works well sort of..

So it is huge chance it is hardware problem.
If I were you, i would again do flash with T-mobile firmware, but before clean everything.
you mean stock rom? how can i do that?
well i found the stock rom here, http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-T699 flashed it, and the phone works, but now, the wi-fi doesn't, i mean when i turn it on, it simply turns itself off again.

eventually i ended up upgrading use kies, that solved the issue with wi-fi (well sort of, i noticed that at least at home, i somtimes see BOTH wifi and 4g icon, like it can't decide which network to use) ,and still able to dial .
so now i have an operational phone, and back to square 2, meaning how can i root with a CWM that blocks all files with signature verification failure.
