[Q] Boot Animation Restrictions on JB / ViperXL? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey All,
I've been playing around with boot animations the past day or two, just for fun. Going through all the ones in this thread I found an issue where, even without changing them at all, I was getting the first part of the animation and then a white screen.
After a lot of research and experimentation, I figured out that each folder of the boot animation had to be under 500k. If I modified any of the previously non-working animations to fit this constraint, they worked.
I realize it's a long shot, but has anyone else played with this / hit this limitation? Is there any way around it (since it makes it particularly difficult to use any animation that loops)? Or is it something specific to my phone or the way I'm doing things? (tried using Venom Tweaks to install or manually copying the relevant .zip to /system/customize/resource)
ViperXL 3.2.3, Elemental 4.5, HBOOT 1.09, S-OFF if any of that is relevant.

Yeah, I got that too. What exactly did you do to fix it? Just delete files until the folder was under 500k? Or create more folders?

Create more folders, which ... a) was a pain in the ass and b) doesn't really work, since the only way to "loop" that is to run it twice manually.
The Viper animation is pretty long, i"m going to dig into the zip and see how that one is arranged.

The stockinverted animations work just fine for me, but the others I tried all did that loop/white flash thing. I noticed that the settings in the desc.txt file were different, but when I tried to copy them from the one that worked, the other animation didn't work at all. I suspect it's something in there, though.

The desc.txt file is finicky but the Viper stock one doesn't look any different from the ones I've tried, and his .png images are huge.... very weird.
Glad I'm not the only one with an issue, I guess

I have the same issue.
Flash one boot anim, it works for a fews sce then screen goes blank, works again a few sec, then screen goes blank again. But the phone does boot normally.
On Viper 3.2.3

Looks pretty epic if I say so myself. I dont even care about the ending animaions, but the award bios bootup is pure winz.
this should be under the theming section
If you just want it as a bootscreen, I'll make a zip. Gimmie a few.
I lied. I can't get it to work...Could be cause I need sleep. Maybe someone else can or I'll try again later.

I couldnt decide where to post this...maybe since I was tired because of finals. But, your right and it should have been obvious that this belonged in themes vs here. I went ahead and reported this, so maybe a mod will move it.

Ohh
Woww, that would be nice if we can get that to work on the Hero
I actually tried them out a few days ago, I'm not the best w/ graphics, but all someone has to do it resize the images and it will work. runs fine, just too big.
It's made for 2.1 roms. Follow the instructions in the thread it should just work. The guy says it was pulled from villain Rom which is a gsm hero Rom. If you're already running a 2.1 Rom and have problems rename the zip bootanimation.zip and copy it to /system/media using root explorer or push it through adb and reboot.
EDIT:
Got it working it's attached.
Push the GIF to /system/media/bootscreen/
I think I need to mess with the lenght still its begins to loop again.
Not sure hwo to fix that.
But I think that is what the Part 1 folder is for.
I renamed it dancing.gif before I pushed it so I wouldn't ahve to mess with the XML file, but you guys do what you will with it.
Works fine on my phone other than the Fresh boot music doesn't match and it begins to loop a second time LOL.

I looked at it and maybe I don't know enough about the boot screens, but I thought our Boot Images where animated GIFs. The zip he has here is a series of PNG's. I would be more than happy to play with it if someone can confirm this is how 2.1 boot screens work.

they work the same way, this is just another way to do it. If there is no /system/media/bootscreen folder, it defaults to using the bootanimation.zip
either way works.
I looked for the villain rom one, couldn't find it.

I can't make an update zip I am on my work PC. Probably get yelled at in a few for runing Gimp instead of PS. They like to spy. LOL
i'm making an update zip. hopefully it works.
edit. ok i have all pngs resized to 320x480 now trying to animate. 90+ images surprised not more really.
Moved to theming as this is not related to rom development.

Did you resize one by one? Gimp lets you open them all as layers and then resize all of them at once.
ok my pc is sucking it up. i have the 90 some individual images resized and everytime i go to save it photoshop just closes out so i have yet to make the gif.

no i made an action in photoshop and resized them all. i'm having problems trying to make the animation.
here's the right one
the first one doesn't loop, just reload or right click and view image

Sooo 90 images is a little much for PS to handle at once. I am not infront of mine right now BUT there should be an Import as Layers options some where. Gimp is "Open as Layers". When you take all 90 images in as layers each layer is a new frame of the animation.
Once they are all in one gif, then resize the whole gif instead of all of them individually. This will take the strain off PS.
Then on mine, the animation needed to be brought out a little bit longer.
You can either do this or just take my gif I posted a few posts above. It needs the timing played with though.
I have a feeling that even when it is set to Not Loop, the boot screen will loop it regardless. I distinctly remember telling it not to loop but it did any way. That or GIMP is jacked up.

Trouble with theme and fc's

I have been trying for the past 2 days now to try and put a theme together for my froyo rom...i modified over 4000 files in doing so. I pngoptimized the files before putting them back into their respective apk's...signed the apk's then put them into their respective theme package...i load the theme via recovery... phone boots up just fine but when i try and launch an app from either the home screen or from the drawer the app force closes...doesn't matter the app...it just force closes...now i have done themeing previously for my other rom and didn't have any of the troubles I'm having now...perhaps some ideas from you all can help me put this thing together before i whip another evo across the room please...yes i know...anger management...well putting roms and themes together usually works for me in place of a.m. now however its only making it worse!!! please someone help me!!! i have spent many many hours putting this together and would really love to see it work as intended!!! honestly, I'd start with the Rosie. Even though it just displays as the bottom bar, it's files have a lot to do with launching as a whole. Make sure that you're suing an actual 2.2 rosie as your base rather than a 2.1, because that will **** your world up off that bat.
A simple way to know is just taking that stock rosie I posted in the other thread, and pushing it into your theme. If it works, then your rosie is your problem.
i never touched the rosie for this build yet...im still in the test phase of the theme...again it loads fine till i try and launch an app...if i copy a theme to my phone that has a a modified rosie i get no problems at all...i.e. riptides froyo theme...

This isn't said to be offensive, but how do you not have any idea of where u went wrong? Are you just doing batch installs of 50 things with no reboots in between?
Even from rom building, you should know better if that's the case.

that's the thing i cannot figure out what is wrong as the only thing im doing is flashing the theme...nothing unusal or different about that.

Honestly, instead of flashing the whoel thing, I'd just install your base rom, and from there adb push each apk that you've modded individually. Reboot in between each apk. that way you'll know exactly which one you biffed.
so far framework-res went well...no issues

System apks aren't supposed to be signed.
My 2 cents..
I have never had success resigning .apk's
If you are replacing images you don't need to unzip the .apk's to get them in there. Also you don't need to unzip an .apk to optimize the .png's
Also, there are certain .apk's that DO NOT like being .png optimized. Png optimizing the HTC_IME.apk broke it on the Hero. I know there were a few others that either wouldn't run or would cause fc's on the Hero but I don't remember exactly which ones.
I have made several attempts since last night...the only apk's that were png optimized were the framework-res.apk and the com.htc.resources.apk...nothing else was touched as far as program apk's. I am truly at a loss with this...
Did you unzip and resign them?
Did you do more mods than just changing .png's?
If all you edited were .png's then if I were you I would try replacing the .png's without unzipping the .apk's before you give up on it.
I would be surprised if you didn't know this already so no offense, but in case you don't... open the .zip archive with 7zip or winrar and just drag and drop the new .png's into whatever folder they go into then push the .apk's to your phone via adb and reboot immediately.
You're so talented I'd hate to see you scrap the project
I am only editing png's from within 7zip not extracting but pulling from archive then saving back into archive...should i not sign the package at all?

nope, no need to sign them if that's how you're doing it
I will say though (i might be misunderstanding) what I do is open the archive drop the whole res folder on my desktop, close 7zip, make my edits, reopen the archive and drop the images back in the folder they came out of. I've had trouble keeping 7zip open while I'm working on an .apk, fwiw.

Ok. Just attach the file to your post. Try to include the name, such as Cleardroid rom or Android Revolution, etc. It can make a difference sometimes as to where the boot animation is supposed to go.

After you put it in the correct folder did you make sure you set the correct permissions? I did this and it took me a while to figure that out. You have to have every box checked except for the three on the bottom, I forget what they say. If that doesn't work I'm not sure.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
here you go the file it is suppose to go in is /system/customize/resource/ because it is a att sense stock rooted rom.
and what are the permission setting and how do i set them.
I just took a look at your file and I found your problems. I will redo your text file and check if it will work with the current image frames which I don't think it will. I will let you know after I test it.
Ok, try this first. Use this naming method for all of your files. An example would be "bootanim_480x800_00000", "bootanim_480x800_00001", and so on. Always start with 00000 and it goes up from there and the second folder would continue where the first one left off. The first part is not important as to what name you use. It could be "bootanim" or "Joe" or whatever. The other parts are important. Leave them as they are except of course the numbers for the frames are changing just like you have now. The second problem is that you are trying to run this at 7 fps and the phone does not know how to read that. It likes 15fps, 24fps, and 30fps. You are going to have to add more frames to your animation because it will be too fast as is. Easiest way without creating new images would be to double the sets and add one extra so that you can come out with 15 frames per second. Also just to make sure, when you add this to a zip file named ATT_bootanimation, make sure you are not using any compression. Use a program such as 7_zip and when you make this into a zip file set the compression to "Store". I have rezipped your file and included a new text document already inside of the zip file and as an extra. You should just need to rename and create more frames now. (As far as what myphoneisbroken was referring to, I am not sure. He may have meant to make sure to use a program such as Root Explorer which would have root access to write to system folders. If that is not what he meant then he would have to elaborate a little more.)
Ok ill rename them all and how many frames do you. suggest I make
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Well that depends on how smooth you want it to play. It will take a bit of experimentation on your part. If you go for 15fps to keep the image count down then you are just going to have to check your timing. If your animation played out smoothly before, just remember you have two seconds of animation as it stands right now before you get to the boot loop. You may want to do at least 3 to 4 or even more seconds depending on how fast it plays through. Just watch the total size of the file so that it does not grow too large. Even the smoothest animation may not always play out on the phone perfectly because the phone is loading stuff and sometimes causes it to stutter. The easy way would be to simply double each of your images, but again, you have to experiment and see what looks the best. You may have to create the inbetweens.
Ok I renamed the pictures to what you said iput it in the boot folder and when it boots up it skips folder part0 and goes looping part1
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Something has to be wrong with a part of the name or something in the first folder if it is only showing the second part. The text document is correct and was tested. If it was incorrect you would have a black screen again. Re post your file and I will look at it again.
yeah sorry but here you go and thanks ( i also hit the button)
I got the revised file and I am going through it now.
Edit: You are correct. Only the second part is playing even though everything looks correct in the first folder. I am going through each image to see if I can find the problem.
Edit # 2: I believe I found the problem. I am re doing your images and will test to make sure it works. I will let you know what the outcome is in a while.
Ok thanks can you please give a description of what it is your doing so I don't have any problems next time I make a bootanimation, and sorry for not pressing the thanks button as you can probably tell I'm doing this on my phone most of the time and I can't find the thanks button on here (if there is one)
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I understand, it was just a hint for the future. As far as the images go, the first folder was not in the correct RGB color mode, (second folder was) so I am re doing them now and I will test when I finish with them to make sure it works.
It works. Attached is your boot animation. Enjoy. (I re saved all of the images in the correct format just to make sure they were all good. Everything should be fine now.) Out of curiosity, what program did you use to make these? Was it Photoshop, paint, or something else?
Thanks for the help ill hit the button when I get on a computer and the program I used for the pictures was paint.net I'm to young to buy PhotoShop
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
That's fine. I am happy I was able to help you get it working. I asked about the program because I only use PS and other programs like it so I was guessing that something had gone wrong and that it was probably with a program like Paint. Everything comes with time. Keep working at it. It plays out fast because there is only two seconds of animation there. An easy thing you could do which would be a little bit of a pain is to make copies of each image so that there are doubles and then re number all of them. It would play out a bit slower then. Good luck.

Ok.. So where the heck is the PowerOff.apk located at? I've searched all over in RE and can't find it..
Also, why don't we just make APKs of boot animation/shutdowns and sounds to go along with them? I mean it seems like it should be easy. Maybe that's just my ignorance of some Android "thing".
Oh there it is, .system/app/PowerOff.apk - went cross-eyed looking at them all.
hmm, when I look in the poweroff.apk I find only like 10 images for the shutdown animation. and it has both a MP3 and a OGG shutdown sound, both the same. It also has a LG shutdown image set AND a verizon shutdown image set. Amusing stuff. So I cant modify this file and then just save it and it work right? It has to be signed or some such? and what controls how long it runs, the layout XML file?
Ok, Wel I answered my on question on the first part, but not sure about the layout XML file and what it does. I just renamed the LG animation files to what the T-mo files were named and poof, it worked. I made a backup of the file OFC. I can't seem to make it go beyond those file names of PowerOff_000.png - PowerOff_0010.png. It always cuts off there.

[Q] Tying to change fonts in CM10.2 -- boot loop

Ok, so I just got the new Nexus 7 and had to go CM 10.2 of course. However, it seems font changing procedures are different or something. Font Changer just refuses to work so I googled around. I see suggestions of iFont and tried it. Boot loop. I had to reflash. So what it the new procedure to change fonts? Must I do it manually? I don't even remember exactly how. (The last time I tried manually replacing them, it went BADLY...)
EDIT: Ok, I manually changed Roboto-Regular.ttf via a file manager. Are there any others of the main fonts I should change?

Roboto-Regular is the most used font in your Android system.
So by replacing that, the biggest part of Android will display your custom font.
But to make the whole system in your desired font, replace the whole font folder with your custom font, but I don't encourage that, because it can look weird on some places.
Hope this helped you

Well, that's the main one. Only thing to be wary about is when .TTF fonts have a typeface parameter in them. When I was moving regular to light, I thought moving bold to regular would look better with it. It bootlooped. Don't mix bold, italics, and normals.
TL;\DR bold fonts must be replaced with bold if you fancy changing it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It's kind of annoying that I have to manually replace each individual part, but yeah, I've replaced each of the Roboto fonts. I've actually gone so far as to also replace Light and Thin as well. Unfortunately, I don't have a working bold replacement at the moment, but only a few things really use that, so it's not really bad.
Replacing the ENTIRE font folder is a bad idea though. I'm not going to do that. It would mess some things up. I've done that before and ended up with boot loops -- and I'm pretty sure that was still with bold only font replacing bold only fonts, italic only replacing italic only, and etc at the time (I was using a different font at the time compared to what I'm using now.) My general impression is that certain fonts may have to have something specific or not be larger than some maximum (very small) size.

Yeah, except for some odd reason ES File Manager is having troubles (I think it's not automatically remounting /system as read-write instead of the read-only default.) I just do it all in a terminal now. Usually I get lazy about it and do it via PuTTY (Servers Ultimate Pro can run a SSH/SFTP server, so I can do basically everything the adb server can do, only through a much nicer and more reliable interface than that horrible adb is that actually works over the network -- somehow adb over the network always gives me troubles...)
BTW, if anyone is curious, I'm using TitiliumText22L Light. It's a serif font, so not for everyone, but it's a very clean, thin font that's easy to read even in small sizes and to my eyes just looks amazing on a tablet or phone (oddly enough, I don't like it nearly as much on the PC... I'm guessing it's because they are such high DPIs that it's actually a much larger size on the tablets/phones and has a lot more detail since most PC monitors are around 96-ish.)
