Different Hardware in Surface Pros? - Microsoft Surface

Wanted to see if any others out there with the Surface Pro has differing hardware in their Surface Pros?
To get to the point - I originally purchased my first SP at Best Buy - only to return it to the local MS Store a few days later due to a screen issue and exchange it for a new one.
Two key things noted:
First SP started with a serial number of "011xxx" and had a Micron mSATA drive (as noted in iFixit's Teardown) - but 128GB instead of 64GB.
My new SP has a serial number that starts with "029xxx" and has a Samsung mSATA drive instead (128GB - Model number SAMSUNG MZMPC128HBFU-000MV) ...
Just interested if anyone has similar differences in hardware and also if anyone knows how to "decode" the serial numbers to figure out where they're made - date of manufacture, etc.
Also of note - the new SP actually has a warranty date through May 17th (15 months) instead of the 12 months from the one I got from Best Buy originally - not sure if that's due to the swap/exchange at the MS store...

Maybe the delays here in the UK are down to MS struggling to get hold of as many mSATA drives as needed, I wouldnt of thought they were that popular before now...

It's hard to gauge if they're actually that "popular" in the US currently, or if MS actually has a supply chain problem and didn't make enough of them....
My first SP was only 1 of 5 that came into the store last Saturday morning (better than the 1 of "zero" that came in on launch day).
The second SP was really a stroke of luck, in that I have 2 MS stores. When I called the support line to start the exchange process - the CSR called the stores for me and - again pure luck - one of the stores had one (due to another buyer only buying 1 surface instead of 2 that he had originally requested). The CSR had it held for me and even when I got there, I had to argue a bit to make them go back and check and get my replacement (the sales rep there thought he had none until he went and checked with his manager).
I did notice while waiting for him to confirm that 4 other people came in during that time to pick up their SPs... So I believe that they're starting to slowly trickle in. In fact, yesterday, one of the other BBY stores that I had placed my name on their list called me to notify me they had one ready to pick up if I wanted it... Told them to release it to the wolves..
Back on topic: Looks like AnandTech confirms what my suspicion is:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6756/microsoft-surface-pro-msata-ssd-upgrade-dangerous-but-successful
"My review sample included a 128GB Micron C400,while I've seen reports of users getting Samsung PM830 (OEM SSD 830) based drives."
Though I'm not entirely sure if my model has the PM 830 or an entirely different model ....

Given the amount of time its taking to get the Pro here in the UK and given I already have an RT I'd be tempted to wait for the Pro2 now, 4th Gen i5 and larger drives perhaps....

GTab availability in the USA

Thanks to erron for pointing me to Staples!
SEARS still has limited stock, as of this writing. However, check your local Staples as it looks like they just got a shipment in:

My local store in PA has them in stock. I also heard a rumor that KMart and Radio Shack might be getting them next week, so you might want to keep an eye out.
have you heard if walmart would be getting these as well?

Have not heard anything in regards to WalMart. You'd think they'd be jumping on the bandwagon for the holidays, but nothing (yet). Maybe they'll surprise us, next week.
i need a place I have a credit card for to get it, we had a baby and cant budget out one lol. unless someone wants a mini 9 instead of their tab *hint* *hint* lol
Is anywhere shipping these internationally yet? It is incredibly hard to ship one outside the US. If they make it too hard I will get the advent vega
How could these retailers sell these without a solid, out of the box software package?
Sure, the retailers maybe / are clueless, but Viewsonic is not (in regards to the software issue).
Boxes still have Flash symbol on them
Storage mode does not see the microsd
No market
A lot of games and apps are broken
Storage mapping
Mystery reboots with stock FW
Boot loops
Not coming out of sleep
Seriously, I like my G (not with stock), but how does this device not fail on epic levels, since it fails "out of box"? Perhaps 95% of consumers will not be hanging around XDA- will not have a clue.
staples.com also carrying the gtablet

I don't know. I ended up returning mine because of the bad screen, but there are certainly a ton of other problems too out of the box. The return rate for these things must be off the charts.
New Info from Viewsonic s gtablet site
App Store
Please be advised that a software update is now available that provides access to an Apps Store directly from your G Tablet. Owners of the G Tablet will receive an automatic notice of the new software upgrade. Users can then simply click on the Apps Store icon from their G Tablet to gain access to 1,000's of leading Android apps. (Please note that the automatic notification requires that the G Tablet has WiFi Internet access upon power-on.)
Adobe Flash Support
The Viewsonic G Tablet hardware and firmware provides full support for the Adobe Flash Player built into the unit. At the time that the G Tablet was manufactured, the Adobe Player application was not available for this product. We anticipate that a version of the Adobe Flash Player Application will be available by December 19, 2010. Owners of the G Tablet will receive an automatic notice that the plug-in is available for download to further expand their web access and entertainment. (Please note that the automatic notification requires that the G Tablet has WiFi Internet access upon power-on.)
I just picked one up at Staples--I asked, and a manager said they had just come in on the truck last night and they were ready to be put out front yet. I mentioned how the Staples web site had said that they were in stock at this particular store, and the manager seemed to take pity, disappeared for a while, and came back with one. (Had to check me out herself, though.)
Office Depot has the Gtablet now as well. The have a working demo of the G and the Archos 7 (not 70). They are selling them now.
So far:
Kmart
Office Depot
Sears
Staples
BTW, the Viewsonic site was wrong and is one reason they pulled the information from their site. No Flash in the update.

they had it in stock at staples, but the manager wouldn't sell me one, claiming that it was a black friday item.
edit: purchased one online with free ship to store. $30 off $150 coupon i bought off ebay worked. it says it will arrive by wednesday, which is sooner than black friday! at $400 - $30 = $370, which appears to be the cheapest price i've seen for it. the only comparable one is $380 at sears on black friday with the free case.
Which store has the best return policy?
Well, I'll have to consider picking up a g tablet, as it seems the tablet is much more usable with the TNT lite 2.0 rom..
So, the next question is, where should I purchase it from? I want to give it a good try for a couple weeks before settling on keeping it. While I understand the unit should easily be able to be returned due to the fact that it's "defective" in some ways, I'd prefer just not having to deal with a pita manager worst case. So, do any stores that are selling it offer easy returns? Sears seems like a "no," but Staples seems to let you return the device used/opened, if you're not satisfied with the purchase. Anyone else know about kmart/etc?
Staples closest to me had 3 when I called them on Saturday to see if they had a REAL functional demo unit and not a mockup like Sears had. They did and also told me that they had 3 in stock. (Seems that the Staples stores all semed to have gotten a whopping 3 of them.)
Sears say 9-10d or 12-15d for stock. (I guess that the busier stores get first dibs on stock, surprisingly the one really close to me and the one just a bit further are both on the shorter time to restock. I felt that the close Sears was never very busy)
I never bothered going over to Staples until Monday morning, since I was sure that I would just pick one up even if I felt it to be grossly overpriced. I still feel that this is overpriced esp. when both Sears and Staples bracketed the gTab display with MUCH cheaper (Atom) netbooks ffs! (They had 2 left in stock on monday, and then 1 of course, after I purchased mine.)
All said and done thought, this is the tablet that I've liked the best from the get go and I'm still only using the stock fw, and 11/22 update now. Web browsing is just so much better with this tablet and the virt kb more responsive such that I can use forums via browser and actually enter messages non-painfully although a bit slowly. (Buhbye tapatalk...)
The PDF version of the manual is kind of funny loads of Engrish, which is kind of surprising considering that Pandigital's wasn't too bad actually while VS' is more like Augen's...
Anybody have any experience with searsoutlet.com? I found one thats over 200 miles away from NYC and for some reason they refuse to ship.

SEARS can be bad - 30 days but only for hardware defects, although I heard that they might extend that to 60 days during the holidays. For Staples, it's 14 days for tech items and seems pretty flexible.
KMart might be the best of the lot at 90 days, but again you should ask before purchasing as they might have exceptions.

I purchased my GTab from the Outlet - they don't ship because these are clearance / closeout items that are in that specific store. The GTabs are customer returns to they should be complete but expect some possible cosmetic defects as a used item.

Just check daily, in a few weeks I bet every store in the nation will have a pile of them, then we can snap 'em up.
Im looking to import one of these and was hoping to take advantage of the Black Friday sales. I saw the Sears catalog, but then someone else said they dont have any stock?
I can use a mail forwarder to buy it for me and then ship it to me in Australia. Looks like Staples and Sears both have them online. Can anyone please confirm:
- Do Sears and Staples currently have these in stock for quick shipping?
- Is it worth waiting for 'black friday' to buy one?

Returning for Galaxy Tab =X

Ok guys, it was a good run... a week run. I don't mind this tablet, I tried TNT 2.2 and ZPAD. I liked them both, TNT a little more.
-This tablet has AMAZING potential, and awesome hardware such as the processor. Software out of the BOX is again like everyone says: HORRIBLE.
Overall build quality is pretty good, not considering the little creeks you get holding the center of the back.
-The official thing that ticked me off to return this tablet was.....wait for it............ LCD Display and viewing angles. Im sorry but it seems like its from the Early 2000's not a display we would see in many electronics Now a days.
-Another deciding factor for me is the touch sensitivity, didn't do it for me. Not as sensitive as I would like.
-Non-illuminated keys, hard to use at night, keys get pressed easily at night.
So after thinking if i should wait for iPAD2, since the rumors are racing; or get Galaxy Tab,
Ive decided to get the Galaxy Tab - I got a brand NEW Galaxy Tab(Sprint) on Ebay for $500 - White backing, Sealed BRAND NEW In BOX. No contract.
I'll be turning the Data OFF and using it as WiFi only, It wont be linked to Sprint, I will NOT activate the 3g.
I got to check the device out, and its extremely portable, its nice. 7 Inch isnt THAT bad at all.
Any comments?
Sorry to see you go. Enjoy your new tablet!
I see these goodbye posts all the time in all the forums I've been a part of. And "sorry" is almost in each post?At the end you just need to be happy with your product. Personally I am not replacing this tablet for anything that's out right now because of the dual core tegra 2 processor. My next tablet is going to be another T2 but definitely a better screen and hopefully a gig of RAM. I don't care if its a 10 or 7 inch tablet because both are practically the same in reference to portability since I can't fit them in my pocket.
Honestly, the only goodbye post that I am looking out for is Roebeets, Rothnic, Bekit, or any other devs. But I figured i'd chime in because I don't think anyone should be sorry for moving on to a different device....unless you were getting a cruz tablet then it would be flame city for you. Jk
I'm sure you'll enjoy ur galaxy tab because its a nice device.
Not gonna disagree with any of your complaints, and if it is not right for you, then get the one you want.
Personally I don't mind the screen, since it is only for me, and I just hold it at the right angle. The non-illuminated buttons are a bit of a silly oversight (and I would much prefer real buttons to those capacitive ones) but I don't mind so much since it has on-screen soft-buttons.
I like it because it is well powered (battery and processor), inexpensive, and has a large display.
Most importantly is that it is easily modifiable. If it wasn't it would have gone right back. It nearly did anyway because I was falsely told by Sears' website that it was a viewpad 10. Since roebeet, rothnic, omiji (? sorry can't remember), and all the others I cannot name have made this device software so good I see awesome potential beyond the great tablet it has already become.
So VS owes XDA and it's senior modders a lot since without them probably all of us would have returned the POS that VS put on the shelves.
In summation Thank You to the XDA team working on the G tab, and if anyone else is thinking about returning this product consider this before you do so, because Samsung, Apple, or any other manufacturer will not give the type of updates and support you can get here from an open device like this, from a place like XDA.
And to the OP, I hope you enjoy your Galaxy better, I have a Captivate and I like it. I am sure if you want a good experience out of the box like what I have in my Captivate, you will be very happy with it.

Shouldn't be too bad, and at the price that Samsung is hawking these for they should support it for a while and better than any other currently shipping Android tablet.
7": yeah, I'm missing that form factor ALOT myself, but I just can't bring myself to give up Tegra2 for something lesser even for a better(IMNHO) form factor(7") nor a better screen(awful gTab viewing angles).
I'm keeping my gTab(actually I'm stuck now anyways past my 14d Staples return) and evaluating 7" complementary(to gTab) tablets, of which(ATM) Nook Color is looking nice w/IPS screen and a8 CPU plus now rooted. Just need to get over to a B&N and try out a demo unit... (want to see how overall system and browser fare speedwise @800MHz on an a8...)
Might just wait out until next year and see if anyone coughs up a 7" Tegra2 or one of the other SoC companies cough up their dual core a9 SoCs and they get in a 7"...
Notion Ink: They sound nice, but since they're a new/small tablet only company I'm waiting to see if they survive to release their 2nd tablet, hopefully Tegra3 based...
OP should avoid the 101 then, since mega gimped device.
Probably best to wait until March. There should be 2.3 or higher Tegra 2 tablets all over the place by then.
Maybe a very stable out of box 2.3 Gtablet by then too..... Maybe at least.

$375 only!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/09/notion-ink-adam-pre-order-to-begin-today-pricing-starts-at-375/
I have been refreshing the NI site for days ready to buy Adam but when I got up to bat I couldn't pull the trigger.
$375 is with a standard LCD - not PixelQI. PQ is $499 w/ Wifi or $550 w/ 3G
Shipping is $50 - the thing comes straight from factory in India.
However, a few things made me hesitate on the device I have waited a year on.
- you must also pay 'customs' but nothing states what this fee is
- shipping is $50 through DHL which is not insured
- ccavenue is processing orders and they do not take MC
- you are billed in full as soon as you place order while estimated ship date is 6-8
- given no further manufacturing delays and that shipping is quick 6-8 weeks is a long wait
- specs list "8+ GB Flash"...so is that 8GB or what?
- crazy amount of return conditions the least of which is getting RMA 7 no later than 7 days after shipment (probably take longer than that for DHL to get it to you) and a 20% restocking fee for 'open' items (that's $100 + return shipping)
- no mention of 'bad pixel' policy
So while I am in love with this thing and will be so jealous for those brave enough to order site unseen (not even a hands on or real photo on website) I am just not that brave.
Now the question is....do I open my gTablet and play with it until round 2 or do I look at something maybe a little bit pricier but with a better display?

For those that are wanting but not ordered an Adam - the Pixel QI versions are already sold out. All they have left now is the LCD version.
Since I couldn't pull the trigger on the Adam I guess the only thing standing between me unboxing my g tablet is questions of the viewing angles. Since my wife picked this up from the store I have not seen it in person. Is it really a deal breaker? What is Office Depot return policy on open products - I know during the holidays returns are extended until Jan 8 but not sure if that mean sealed in the box or not? I imagine I could just go and return it Dec 26 if it is that bad....stores are usually so crazy that day they ask few questions about returns.
Oh, and about Notion Ink. They updated their blog explaining some of the conditions (such as $50 shipping) and it is a little more comforting. I never doubted they were a good, honest company. I think my issue is that they are biting off more than they can chew.
Building a fantastic product in a lab is one thing - seeing a new product introduction through the entire manufacturing process is something completely different and that is where I am not sure of NI's experience. While the prospect of waiting sux, I think I am more comfortable doing so than jumping in on the first run.
It is not a question of NI taking care of me if there is an issues, it is a question of when. I am still jealous of all those who did place the order and will kick myself the day everyone starts posting their unboxing videos :-(

Office Depot will give you a return gift ticket for Jan 8th (they did for me). Since Flash and the acceleromter have issues out of box, Office Depot should allow return and no restock or forced store credit (they do this for opened electronics). The store manager wrote on my receipt "Full return allowed", since he was aware of the issues.

For personal viewing/usage I don't really find it to be that noticeable except when I rotate the tablet specifically to look at this and was simultaneously checking for backlight bleed(had bad bleed on GT & WPDN).
Sorry, but there's a problem with a company that immediately charges for an order when they KNOW it will not be shipping for a while. They're SUPPOSED to NOT charge UNTIL the item is shipped or about to be shipped. So this tells me that they're tight on money ATM...

eLocity A10 in 3 Flavors Now At Tiger Direct!

I just went to tigerdirect.com and noticed that they have 3 versions of the A10 up for pre-order. Tiger is one of my "trusted" online retailers so I feel pretty good about this. The problem is StreamTV being very vague about wether or not they are going to offer this with HoneyComb, or if they are going to follow up by providing us with a OTA update. That is what has me on the fence. What do you think?
It will ship with Foyo - at least, mine will - and for now, that will be fine. A familiar firmware platform will help me get used to the new hardware, and provide a reliable point of comparison. Of course, I'm expecting to see Honeycomb on it soon enough, either via an Elocity update or XDA developers or both.
Some things that will matter to me: running apps off the SD card, important because of the limited system memory; wide viewing angles and true mulitouch; snappy interface; app compatibilty; and build quality. Am expecting the USB port to interface correctly with my PC.
Let's see! Mine should be here in 7 - 10 days.
they have 40 of each model scheduled to arrive at their warehouse 3/7/2011
I have a contact at Tiger I spoke to today regarding this item. He stated they have 40 of each model scheduled to arrive at their warehouse 3/7/2011. At the time I spoke to him he stated that 3 of the 40- 32GB models are taken one being my order the rest are still up for grabs!

Tigerdirect Pulls the G-Tablet

Just a heads up: the Gtab is no longer on the website of tigerdirect in Canada or the US. Incidentally I doubt they sold all their stock: the local store here in London, Ontario had 5 as of yesterday (not counting the two that I returned for various hardware defects before getting a refund). Also, yesterday the TG website was showing "Buy today, ships today". Canadians should look for it for an even lower price now at places like factorydirect and XSCargo.
Maybe they are sold out?
Or maybe they started getting complaints that the software was buggy and that there was no way to fix it (the OTA updater just started working again in the last hour or so).
See my edit above. I doubt they ran out and I doubt it's a software issue because (at least in Canada) they would charge a 15% restocking fee if the item is not "defective" (which I understand to mean hardware). Having said that, given the crappy hardware I recieved not once but twice (damaged screen first time and sleep of death second time), I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not the only having hardware problems and that was what led them to pull it. Again, just speculating.
They are $280 again through woot. Search Amazon.
I bought mine from TD in Feb, I noticed they disappeared a few days after I made my purchase but then returned about a week later.. Could be they are sold out, they were selling for 299..

I don't think that any of the stores have sold out. 2 months ago I spoke to the manager at the Office Depot I go to and asked their opinion of the Viewsonic Tablets and since I have gone there for over a decade they said it is the most returned product they sell. They had hopes Viewsonic would be able to fix the problem but it has been months and still riddled with problems. I just got my tablet a few weeks ago and tried to keep it stock due to warnings and possible new update "any day now". But I got so many FC's and crashes I had to put a cusotm ROM on. Thanks to TNT Lite and Vegan modders I have had only 1 FC in the 1 week of the new ROM.
Viewsonic should just send all distributers a sticker to put on the Tablet boxes that says: Sorry but you will need to get a ROM upgrade from XDA, Slate,.... to have a fully functioning tablet"
Just last night my son actually played with the Gtab and could not believe how quick and responsive it is and easily played YouTube!

Great... just as I finally convinced myself to buy one and see the OTA updater works.
Anywhere else where we can buy those in Canada?
Sending mine for warranty already
Bought 2 gTablets, the first one is already going to warranty because one specific color (slightly off-white) is being displayed as a cyan color. sigh...
Hope the 2nd one doesn't go bust. I only had it for less than 3 weeks

Hi,
Just a counterpoint: I've had my Gtab (original) since late November, and have been on only stock since then. I did re-partition once to 2048/0, a long time ago, but the only times I've had problems w FCs was w the OOB initial firmware, and once when I installed an app (don't remember which one). The OTA update fixed the former, and doing Fix Permissions w CWM fixed the latter. I think that doing the re-partition early-on has saved me a lot of headaches, but stock has been stable for me.
Jim
I don't know if the earliertablets were better quality or not but I've also had my tab since November. Flashed almost all the roms on here and haven't had to nvflash yet (knock on wood). I did have to repartition the first time i tried bekkits cm based rom. Over the last six months have only seen one improvement after the next coming from the developers. Doesn't matter what your needs are there's a rom to fit them.
I ordered one through tigerdirect.ca and it seems to be coming from the USA through UPS. So who knows.
When they had the eBay sale last month, I picked one up. From that sale, they sold 376 of them. They may be sold out.
I actually have no trouble believing tigerdirect is pulling it due to high rate of returns. Let's admit it. For every person who wanders around and found xda, there are perhaps 10 others who never figured it out and were stuck with the stock rom. Without knowing about the repartition fix, a high number of them would eventually get FC's. The rest would be disappointed about not having google market because they never figured out how to fix market.
The gtab is a very fast and responsive tablet IFF you're willing to put some work into it. I've been fixing people's computers for years, and it's my experience that most users just don't want to bother with doing fixes.
This is the reason why I don't recommend the gtab to people. It's working just fine for myself and my elderly parents (and I'm a noobie with android modding). My elderly dad hasn't encountered a single issue other than calling me a few times to ask how to turn on the gps again (LOL).
If anything, the hype about the gtab should stop. We really don't need more whiners in our community. There should be a pinned thread telling people to go to buy an ipad.

It doesn't have a GPS...unless you're hooking one up externally through bluetooth.
What concerns me about the gtab is not the software issues, it's the hardware issues. From screens with dead pixels to sleep of death to problems with charger ports, it just seems like a cheaply built piece of equipment with no quality control. I wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression of android based on this tablet: I had a lot of fun playing with it and modding it. In the end, it's hardware issues that led me to return two consecutive gtabs. I'll be tenth in line to pick up the Asus Transform (after I read the reviews from the first nine early adopters )
I actually asked Tiger Direct if they were out of stock and this is their answer:
"Unfortunately the item is no longer available since the manufacturer already discontinued the item. Kindly call one of our sales representative at 800-800-8300 for further assistance in finding the comparable item."
I would say that is quite interesting. I guess it means Canadians are out of luck if we want a new unit...
So according to TD, the Gtab has been officially discontinued. Interesting...
I am not surprised to see that Viewsonic decide to discontinue the GTab. How could it compete with Asus Transformer? The other poster pointed out correctly, the GTab is rubbish with the stock ROM. People have to replace the ROM from day one and void the warranty. If I had known the price for the Transformer before I purchased the GTab, Viewsonic would have had one customer less now.

Sure, but most people that bought it knew that and were planning to use a custom ROM anyway. I know I wanted to (I always use custom ROMS on all my electronics whenever possible).
But it would definitely explain why the GTab was so cheap these days.

Maybe they are sold out?
Or maybe they started getting complaints that the software was buggy and that there was no way to fix it (the OTA updater just started working again in the last hour or so).

probably .
my response from Tigerdirect.ca:
"We do apologize for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately our records indicate that this item is on backorder and should be available within this week.
You can chose to wait for the item or you may also contact one of our sales representatives at 1.800.800.8300 for further assistance finding a comparable item. Thank you for your time and patience."
If anyone knows where to find any in Canada right now please let me know.
Thanks!!

[Q] Where to buy

Hey all,
Im looking at getting the TF with the dock but not sure if i should get it here in the UK or get it in US and have it shipped. The reason I'm thinking of the US is for 2 reasons:
1. Cheaper
2. Better updates (they seem to have more features?)
While I know it will be a longer wait for it to be available properly in the US, it might be worth it.
What do you guys think?
id suggest the UK. There are various problems that mean you may need to return/exchange it ....
(mine still has something rattling around inside it)
once the ROM community kicks in and the ASUS updates settle down im guessing that updates will come via custom ROMs as opposed to waiting for official ones to filter to the UK.
I bought it from this site
http://www.laskys.com/computing/laptops_and_pdas/tablets/asus_eee_pad_transformer_with_docking_station.html
Delivery is due on Tuesday.
used Laskys a few times and found them quite good (well no problems and quick delivery anyway!).
I guess you guys are right, best just get one here and be done with it.
I bought from Comet, direct from store. They only seem to have one per store so maybe worth a call first.
Mine seem fine with no issue, but only 1 day old.

Comet and laskys are essentialy the same company anyway...
got mine from laskys too..very quick delivery... I called the support hotline for a replacement because the first unit I received had serious light bleed, the support guy quickly ordered a replacement for me..(no question was asked at all)
The replacement turned up the next day (i was very surprised) and the parcelforce guy took the faulty one back...
can't complain that
the coemt and PC world here both have the tablet, but not the dock.. the guys at PCworld (suprisingly) were excellent - really knew their stuff!
