I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone leaving s-on cos of my hboot being 2.0002 or whatever. And need a step by step to installing a custom rom with s-on. I have installed cwm recovery but cannot access it. I spent 4 hours searching on Saturday, can some kind person explain how to do it?

Put the ROM in SDcard. Turn off fastboot and switch your phone off. Then, hold Vol down button and without releasing it, press and hold power button. Hold till you see a white screen, You'll be in Bottloader mode. Press Vol down to highlight RECOVERY and press power to enter recovery. You'll be in CWM (if you flashed it correctly)
In CWM,
Backup your current (stock) ROM in Backup and restore > Backup. It's not necesary, but recommended, as you may want to come back later
Go to Wipe/Format
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Format System
Format Data
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Then, go back and select Install ZIP from SD Card > Choose ZIP from SD Card and choose your ROM. The ROM is flashed.
Since you are hboot 2.00.002, you have to go through an additional step after that, you need to flash the kernel that came with the ROM, or you'll be stuck on the white HTC Screen. Extract the boot.img from the ROM and do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19071114&postcount=37

However I installed cwm recovery from the rom manager but it doesn't show up when I go into recovery, I get a red exclamation point, I press volume up and power and it says something about e something recovery not found?
Also where do I put that command? That kinda stumped me too lol. Sorry for being a noob

Next, get CWM recovery and instruction on how to flash it here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694
You'll be flashing it via fastboot. Instructions are there in the second thread. The command will be in fastboot too, along the same lines.

What point no. 4 means is that you need to move the file you want to flash (recovery.img in this case) to the folder that contains your adb files (android-win-tools, or whichever folder that you have extracted the android-win-tools that you downloaded). The rationale behind this is that when you enter the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, the fastboot will look for recovery.img in its default folder (android-win-tools, or whichever folder you've extracted the adb files to).
So here's what you need to do. For example, if you downloaded the adb files and extracted them to a folder named, let's say, xxxx, which is located in your C: then you need to take the recovery.img file and copy-paste it to the folder xxxx.
Before starting any of the procedures outlined here, first make sure adb can detect your device. (adb devices... sound familiar?)
Now boot phone into fastboot.
Now enter the following commands at the cmd prompt:
C:\Users\UPPY(or whatever)>cd\
Now you'll get the following:
C:\>
Next, you need to enter:
C:\>cd xxxx
You'll now get:
C:\xxxx>
Finally, enter the following:
C:\xxxx> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You should be done. I know the above looks over simplified... but i'm just trying to be extra nice here

After you've flashed your custom recovery, boot into recovery and choose install from sd card, select zip from sd card, then navigate to your rom.zip file, and confirm to flash it using the recovery (on your phone)
But since you've unlocked using HTCDev, this will not flash the kernel as the boot is still locked. You have to bypass this by flashing the kernel manually using fastboot, otherwise you'll be stuck at the white HTC splash screen (Oh! how i hate that screen!!)
The kernel is contained in the boot.img.
The boot.img is contained within the zip file of the ROM you want to flash. So when you open up a ROM.zip (for example Reaper_v1.6.zip) with winrar, you'll see various files inside. Extract the one called boot.img. This is your kernel. Copy-paste this boot.img in your adb folder (like in the previous post)
To flash it, since you've already set up fastboot, just do what you did for flashing recovery.img, and follow the instructions i gave you exactly the same way, except the last part, where instead of recovery.img, you need to type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
now type adb reboot, and boot into your shiny new custom ROM!!
You're done.
I'm getting an error when i try to connect to wi-fi, it just says error, what have I done wrong? grrr.
I think i didnt register the 3.4 boot image, will report back in a minute.

I have first read the install instructions from MIUI (saying: full wipe, flash rom) and now I have exactly what you have warned: Phone doesn't proceed, it ist stuck on the white HTC Screen.
UPDATE:
I was afraid of taking out the battery, as this may cause problems, and vol up + vol down + power just rebootet into white htc screen. The only way was indeed pulling the battery (after the vol up vol down power-reboot-gap). Then I could enter into the bootloader the regular way (vol down + power), and change to fastboot, and flash boot.img. Everything is fine now!!!

I'm glad this thread is helping more people than just myself. I'm not exactly a Technophobe but this was far more complicated than rooting my blade, Europa or racer or indeed writing the CSS files I used back on windows mobile 6.5 on my old touch 2.

Hi, A short but effective guide for people who want to root their Desire S while keeping HBOOT 2.00.0002 and S-ON. This is what I did with my phone yesterday, but took me a lot of time to figure things out, so I'm writing this for myself and other people.
1) First of all set up ADB and Fastboot. [GUIDE] Easy and simple adb and fastboot setup for newbies (Windows only)
Also download the ROM you wish to install on your Desire S and put it on your microSD card. For this tutorial I choose Reaper v2.1 rom by lowveld.
2) You have to unlock your bootloader first via HTCdev so that you can install EXT4 recovery and custom roms. In the dropdown list select ''All other supported models'' and follow the instructions.
If you successfully finished the HTCdev unlock tutorial, your phone has a unlocked bootloader.
3) We're going to install EXT4 recovery. But first download ''4EXT_Recovery_v2.2.7_RC5.zip'' and extract the recovery.img file to the folder where you installed fastboot and adb. If you followed the tutorial in step 1 the folder will be ''C:\android-tools''
Now make sure Fast Boot is turned off on your phone. Go to ''Settings > Power > Fast Boot'' to turn it off. Unplug your phone from your computer, it's time to turn of your phone and boot into your bootloader.
Press Volume Down Button and Power Button at the same time to boot into recovery. Now connect your phone to your computer and select fastboot.
(Power button to select, Volume Down/Up to navigate)
Go to start->run-> type cmd and press enter. A command prompt will now appear.
Type:
cd c:\android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img [press enter]

EXT4 recovery is now installed on your phone. Turn off your phone in bootloader menu.
4) Open the rom (.zip file) you downloaded in step 1 and put the ''boot.img'' file in ''C:\android-tools''
If you followed this tutorial correctly, you already copied your desired rom your onto your MicroSD card.
Now we boot into the bootloader again, this time we select recovery.
Go to: wipe | format>and select: wipe data/factory reset (this may take a while), then select wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
Go back to main menu in EXT4 recovery and select ''install from sdcard'' select ''Reaper_V2.1.ZIP''. After the rom is installed turn your phone off again.
Boot into recovery, connect your phone to your computer and select fastboot on your phone.
Go to start->run-> type cmd and press enter. A command prompt will now appear.
Type:
cd c:\android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash boot boot.img [press enter]

After it's successfully installed, turn of your phone and just boot normally. It may take a while for your phone to boot up.
Your phone is unlocked,rooted and has a custom ROM.

Note: Some new ICS roms require different kind of HBOOT. I use Fallout v5.0.0 without any problems.

Yeah, if your phone is locked (2. hboot) or s-on (0.98 hboot) if will just give you shell root, useful but not required for what you doing.
this looks promising, i think i'll try it someday

Finally. This was the missing link in this forum!
I had the intention do write one, but I am S-OFF and cannot verify the steps without going to Stock then doing the steps and then downgrade and S-OFF again. Too many things to do just in the name of a correct tutorial. Anyway thanks I am glad that somebody finally wrote it!

i installed the ROM via recovery ... and then the phone restarted and started to boot, i just pulled out the battery to turn off the phone and then to flash "boot.img" via fastboot, but now i stuck on the bootscreen ... anybody knows what to do?

I tried it, but it will still stuck on the HTC Splash screen ...
When i'm flashing the ROM everything works and in the end it starts restarting ... and i have no chance to stop the restarting? Or i'm blind

What rom do you use? Maybe the recovery script forces a restart, sry, but anyways use vol down vol up and power or adb reboot bootloader to force a reboot.
If it's really needed only pull battery in between the small gap after shutdown and boot, but not at running system.
Try it the other way round, first flash the boot.img, afterwards flash the rom.

I am new to android and I did know a great stupidity, I removed the battery while charging the 4EXT Recovery image I thought was locked and now i do not know what to do, please teach me download it another rom as it related to furniture.

What did you do before the phone wouldn't boot?
I followed your directions, I installed version Reaper_V2.1'''' I closed, I opened the phone and I gave in "Fastboot", give the command:
cd c: \ android-tools [press enter]
fastboot flash boot boot.img [press enter],
but it says "error: can not load boot.img", if I saw a video where I realize I'm wrong or my phone failed.

Rooting- error: cannot load "flashboot flash recovery r1-modaco-reco... .img"
I'm rooting my HTC One S the first time. And I was stupid and thought that HTC One X Clockworkmod flash would work.
Now I know how flashing and clockworkmod installing works but before that I accidentally flashed the One X command: "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.7-endeavoru.img" and now when I go to recovery it gives me a red text and nothing works.
I searched everywhere for a guide to remove it and did not found. So I thought I could flash it over with an One S flash, but then when I entered the command: "fastboot flash recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img" It gave me this: "error: cannot load 'recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img'. My phone is connected perfectly, when I type 'fastboot devices' it shows me my phone is there.
So I think this is not a big problem for developers. Can anyone tell me what to flash or do to get rid of the One X recovery? Otherwise I just have to live with a phone with unlocked Bootloader and no access to root

Why don't you dl goo manager from market, open it and open menu and tap on Install OpenScriptRecovery and let it install twrp--although, I guess if you aren't rooted yet that won't work

the cwmr for HTC One S does not exist any more on the page you gave me. There's only a blank page if you click on it

I flashed the "openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img". Didnnt change anything :/
sorry to hear that, not sure what else to do, so you still have onex recovery?
even if you run an ruu, i think you still have to flash the stock recovery first. haven't read up on that much, as never needed to run one
Don't know if trying to flash the stock recovery will help. I have the original one at home, but not sure if that is what they still call stock recovery with new ota's having come out
If it cannot load it, you probably spelt the name wrong. rename the image file to recovery.img (make sure it isn't .img.img) and flash that. Make sure the file path is correct! (e.g fastboot flash recovery C:\Users\Me\Desktop\recovery.img)

no no, the flashing finished successfully. I entered "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img" and then it flashed without problems, but in the phone it didn't change a thing. If I enter recovery then there's the android icon with a white background and under it is the red text.
But keep guessing, maybe I really am doing something stupid wrong
When I go to Fastboot USB mode with my phone then I open the command prompt and firstly type "cd c:\CWM" (the folder where my flashing files are). Then secondly I type "fastboot devices" (just to be shure). And thirdly depending on what I am flashing I type "fastboot flash recovery name.img". I have tried "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img", "fastboot flash recovery r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville" and "fastboot flash recovery ville_recovery_signed". Every one of them finishes successfully but doesn't change anything in the phone. I already have recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.4-ville.zip and CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip in my phones directory to install root when I get into the recovery. In the C:\CWM folder in my computer are these files:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
(these where exctracted from fastboot.zip)
openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img
r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img

Try to boot into bootloader hit fastboot reboot bootloader and then choose recovery. It can take a while to boot into recovery.

fastboot ->reboot bootloader ->bootloader ->recovery. Absolutely no change, It took half a second to bring up the "HTC quietly brilliant" logo and about two seconds for the red text to appear under it. No buttons work after that and I just have to hold the power button down to shut it down.
And by bootloader is unlocked!
As stunner said above it can take a while to boot into recovery, how long have you waited?
Give it a few minutes... Also you could try flashing stock recovery, it is distributed in the all-in-one tool and also in paulobriens posts about superboot. Then run a RUU.
But my best to would be to try fastboot booting a custom recovery, "fastboot boot cwm.img".
If this is the thing where you go int recovery for a millisecond and then back to the 'red text' screen (you have to watch carefully to notice), you should try erasing your cache in fastboot mode.

It's gotten a little confusing and some suggestions are being repeated. I wonder if the android icon you are describing is the stock recovery symbol. At that screen have you tried to press vol+ or maybe volume-. I forget which one takes you to stock recovery. May want to check on that.
Also, have you tried typing "fastboot boot recovery" to go straight to recovery, bypassing htc restrictions

I did have issues fastbooting recovery before. You can as mentioned try fastboot erase cache before fastbooting recovery. And change the name of your recovery to just recovery.img before you fastboot.
I assume you have nandroid backup on phone and copies of it and sdcard backup on pc.
I think when I had issues with recovery sticking it was my N1 and I typed "fastboot erase system" first, then fastbooted recovery. Then wiped all and restored nandroid. I am not sure we can do that on the 1s with no s-off. Someone else may know.
Can you access sdcard where you could reformat it fat32 thru a windows formatter program. Of course copy all to pc first. Sometimes sdcard formats help things you wouldn't expect it to.
Some folks have reported formatting works better thru phone on the 1s, maybe because it is an internal card. I did it once and think I had to redo it thru phone. But, if it gets recovery working, no big deal.
All these are suggestions and as the devs say--at your own risk--
I thought you said you said in first post, phone works, just no root capabilty. If that is true it should be fixable--I hope.

no no, the flashing finished successfully. I entered "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img" and then it flashed without problems, but in the phone it didn't change a thing. If I enter recovery then there's the android icon with a white background and under it is the red text.
But keep guessing, maybe I really am doing something stupid wrong
When I go to Fastboot USB mode with my phone then I open the command prompt and firstly type "cd c:\CWM" (the folder where my flashing files are). Then secondly I type "fastboot devices" (just to be shure). And thirdly depending on what I am flashing I type "fastboot flash recovery name.img". I have tried "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img", "fastboot flash recovery r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville" and "fastboot flash recovery ville_recovery_signed". Every one of them finishes successfully but doesn't change anything in the phone. I already have recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.4-ville.zip and CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip in my phones directory to install root when I get into the recovery. In the C:\CWM folder in my computer are these files:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
(these where exctracted from fastboot.zip)
openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-ville.img
r2-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-ville.img
ville_recovery_signed.img

you should also have adb.exe if you are using adb--

Give it a few minutes... Also you could try flashing stock recovery, it is distributed in the all-in-one tool and also in paulobriens posts about superboot. Then run a RUU.
But my best to would be to try fastboot booting a custom recovery, "fastboot boot cwm.img".

Okay I waited for 10 minutes, nothing happens. I've even tried to hold down all the button combinations(with the three buttons) for a few minutes.
I've tried flashing everything and fastboot boot just takes me directly to the recovery with the red text. I flashed both the recoveries in the all-in-one tool.
As I know absolutely nothing about RUU(only what the letters stand for) then I'd rather not do that because I read from some threads that RUU has quite a high chance to mess up your phone. Or if you direct me to a tutorial that u insure me that is 100% good then I could give it a go : D

I think I have made the same mistake of flash recovery, but I can not get into cwm recovery, I only appear for 1 second the recovery, then restarts and returns to the operating system. SD card, all changes are discarded when you restart the phone, which is also only if I try to install or remove some utility. Can not install any recovery, even if fastboot works well and looks real mind install the recovery but when I reboot, it returns to its previous behavior, with recovery not working. I tried to install the recovery in every way, from fastboot, from All in one with quickroot, but none of these operations has changed the state of the system.
Unfortunately you can not install a Stock RUU because the bootloader unlocked and the recovery is not the stock, and especially not when there is no tutorial to follow to bring this situation to the ONE S, to its original state
Hopefully someone will be able to find a solution to your and my problem.
One option you guys may need to entertain, if applicable, would be to exchange phones with Carrier. Worth a shot--
I have not heard of this exact issue, but most comments say if you can't boot to recovery you are bricked--

I've accidently rebooted the phone while on TWRP after full wipe without instaling new rom. Now it won't pass the initial screen (htc quietly briliant), or get into the TWRP mode.
What can I do?
I just had instaled the King Kang rom...
manually boot into bootloader. volume down + power. then "fastboot flash boot boot.img" the boot.img for the rom you want to flash. then boot into recovery from bootloader.

Hold power button and volume down until the phone turns off
release power but not volume down.
This will eventually load you into hboot, from there you can access TWRP.
You forgot to flash the boot.img didn't you?

Trying to flash King Kang again. That's the only one I have in my internal memory.
Probably not the best option as it got stuck on the initiating swagger...
How long does it take to pass this screen? Lost my patient after 5 minutes and I've restarted it...

I clean installed a ROM, but it stays stuck in boot up animation. So I headed your advice.. But its not working. All I can do is start Odin mode and watch my boot up animation run. Over and over.
I can't find a work around so I can get back to TWRP and go back to a rom that offers at least more than a boot up animation
Any ideas?

step 1. Boot into Bootloader Power+volume down
step 2. go to pc and flash recovery again with fastboot. fastboot flash recovery.img (make sure its in your adb folder)
step 3. while still in fastboot type: fastboot reboot recovery
step 4. Grab a beer, your back in recovery. flash away (and remember to flash boot.img via fastboot or you will boot loop if on hboot 1.14 and up

use hasoon toolkit and put radio in folder then flash via fastboot
Hey everyone, I just went through the process of rooting my phone using the Hasoon200 tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426). Everything worked fine; I unlocked the bootloader, flashed the TWRP recovery, and installed CM10. However I couldn't get past the CM10 loading screen so I went back to recovery and wiped everything I could (cache, dalvik, system, factory restore) then rebooted. After that I can't get past the white HTC "Quietly Brilliant" splash screen. No bootloader or recovery. Hasoon2000's tool can't reach the phone to do anything. Holding Down Volume and Power buttons just reboots to the splash screen. When I plug the USB into my computer it must be recognized somehow because it connection notification sound plays but I don't see the drive. What can I do now?
Turn on, hold power 10-15 seconds, until screen goes black, let off, press n hold volume down, press power just 2-3 seconds, let off power button but continue holding vol. Down
Than select recovery
And once in bootloader check if you have hboot 1.14

Thanks for the response. I'm able to reach the bootloader now, but when I select recovery it freezes once again on the white HTC splash (but this time with the HTC Dev red text below). And I do have hboot 1.14

Flash rom,
boot into boot loader,
drop the boot.img inside your adb/fastboot folder,
Right click on you adb/fastboot folder and choose open command prompt here. The type
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot that beast and enjoy the profits

New to this phone and was a little overeager. I unlocked bootloader, rooted, installed TWRP and flashed CM but didn't flash the boot img before flashing CM so it boots forever, of course (I'm so dumb...)
I can get back to the bootloader where I try to flash my CM boot img but adb won't detect the device (presumably because usb debugging isn't selected since I can't boot into the rom). How can I either 1) get adb to detect so that I can flash the boot img with adb or 2) flash the boot img without adb?
Stumped. Thanks in advance for any/all that can help with this.

Sigh you flash boot img through fastboot
Get phone into bootloader. (White screen, 3 skating droids)- make sure it says "fastboot USB" in red
Right click on your adb/fastboot folder, choose "open command prompt here"
Type--> fastboot devices
See if anything shows up.

Hey! Thanks for replying. I'm stuck here. Fastboot flash of the boot img requires the phone to be usb detected, yes? I go to fastboot but when I type 'adb devices' I gets nothing back.
I don't think I was clear in my earlier post. I have CM and gapps flashed but it won't boot into the OS because I didn't flash the boot img first but now I can't get the phone to be detected by adb so I don't know how else to flash the boot img. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I realize you didn't have to.

Drop the boot.img INSIDE of your adb/fastboot folder.
Boot into bootloader
Right click on your adb/fastboot folder. Choose "open command prompt here" type --> fastboot flash boot boot.img

Stuck in bootloader loop
Folks, I was stuck in similar situation as well; I had missed copying the boot.img step initially and after i did a factory reset on the boot loader i got stuck in HTC logo screen with red lines warning.
I followed the directions provided on this thread and am now able to get into TWRP recovery screen. What would be the steps for me now to flash a rom onto the device again. I had flashed the ViperXL rom prior to me stupidly doing the factory reset.
Per directions on another thread, I was trying to first have the rom and boot.img loaded using the mount from TWRP. However when i do the the step of 'Mount USB storage', I get the warning that on my computer that i need to 'Format Disk drive'. Not sure why would i need to do it.
Please help!

Doing a factory reset from the bootloader killed your SD partition. You'll need to format it as fat32 before you can access it again. You've lost everything on there.

I did the reformat for my SDCard; how do i proceed now? should i move the zip file for the rom to the sd card and try installing it ?What would be the next steps i would need to do to get back to the ViperXL rom i have downloaded; or is there a way for me to go back to the original HTC sense rom i had prior to flashing

I was able to flash ViperXL rom again; I placed the zip file for the rom in the TWRP folder after i mounted the device. Thereafter i was able to install the rom from the recovery. All good for now . Although all my data from Sd card got wiped :crying:
