What do you mean? I don't think you can wipe it while the system is running... Are you locked out of open recovery?
What ROM are you using? If you're using one of khal's recent ROMs or Dexter+bugfix-v3 you should be able to use Motorola's recovery to wipe the cache partition (dalvik cache is moved to /cache by default on these roms, otherwise it's on /data (or you could have moved it to ext partition)).
Now I'm using the ROM dexter, You're right, it is not possible while the system is working ....
Thanks.!
Hi,
if the upgrade to ICS is available i want to do a full wipe with factory reset before.
How is the best way and in which order is best to do a full system cleansing with stock rom 2.3.6 installed.
First deletion of SD Card an than over the recovery menu resetting the rest?

I'm no expert but why would you delete the sdcard?
Root, install CWM recovery via rom manager. Select if you have 4g or not.
load rom onto root of the sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Flash rom
If you want to install a custom kernel instead of the one that comes with your rom of choice
After you flash the rom
Go back and rewipe dalvik
Then flash kernel
Reboot and enjoy

There's no point in wiping the dalvik twice, and instead of wiping the dalvik in CWM I'd use dalvik-wiper.zip by Morfic. Flashable zip, and it actually wipes the dalvik.
The rest is all good to the best of my knowledge.
Full wipe with GB stock rom before upgrade to ICS
Hi,
@polobunny
on the SD memory are two folders named .android_secure and Android where Android specific things are stored in. I have read that for a new and clean system build up would be good to delete this folders before.
@sookieball
I have only the normal stock rom 2.3.6 with stock recovery (no CWM) and want to stay there.
So then I think the best way is to go over the menu and do a reset to the factory settings. Delete the to folders on the SD memory manually and afterwards I will go into the recovery menu and delete the dalvik cache and then apply the ICS update.
Why i want to to this? I have at the moment a lot of useless Apps installed and i want to refresh all and start with a clean system with upgrading to ICS. Thats all.
Wherever you read that you should stop reading there.
Hi ! I want to install BioHazard, but after installation i've got loopback.I try to install it through ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.1.2. Also i do wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvic cache anf fromat data system cache.I don't install Gapps. What should i do to install it without loopback. Now i'm on Gigabread
OK, you first of all don't panic !!!
Now, first of all flash TWRP recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1694617 from CWM by putting it into SD card and then flashing it.
Now, simply download the Bio Hazard ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1917906 , and again put it in SD card.
Now, download Gaaps for your mobile from this URL - http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
Now, boot into recovery, and then go to Wipe Menu, there wipe system, data ( factory reset ) and all the cache.
Now, go to install menu, and there choose Bio Hazard ROM file that you downloaded into your SD card.
Flash it.
Now, flash Gapps that was in your SD card.
Now simply reboot your mobile !!!
All done your mobile should be working !
Hope I helped you ! :fingers-crossed:
:highfive:
And pls hit the thanks button if I helped you !
hello, go to recovery with the buttons and make conbinazione wipe Dalvik cache and then install the gapps, wipe cache and wipe Dalvik cache and reboot your device ...
using CWM 5.8
what kind of files does (wiping delvik cache) delete?
and what would happened to the device after formatting "system/"
last one about ULTRAGEN V.1 ROM
thread link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020137
i followed the instructions carefully but the rom wasn't successfully installed so i flashed CM 10 again
Wiping the dalvic cache did just that, it wipes the dalvic cache... formatting system deletes everything in the /system folder which will require a new rom to be flashed

Hi,
Today I successfully rooted my galaxy Tab 2 7 P3100. What I am not sure is when and why we need the
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
I want to understand because I plan to try couple of other ROMs. Should I follow the above procedure every time I flash a ROM or is there a better way where avoiding any of the above is an option.
Regards.
to minimize the conflict that would occur if you use a different rom base
try it without wiping, usually meet force close dialog after booting
all i know is that wiping cache will clear data related to applications, so if you have an app force closing all the time it is sometimes handy to wipe that app's cache from the settings or wiping the entire cache from recovery.
wiping data/factory reset however will remove any app you have installed and all your personal files that you've put on the device.
Basic breakdown,
If going from one base ROM to another base ROM like stock to CM, CM to AOKP, stock to AOKP or anything like that you will need to do ALL 3 wipes.
If going from like a CM10 nightly to a newer nightly you can usually just wipe CACHE and Dalvick
If you flash addons you will usually need to wipe cache and Dalvick
BASICALLY just do what the INSTRUCTIONS for the ROM your flashing SAYS to do.
Wiping Dalvik cache before and after flasing of ROM

First of all a BIG THANK YOU.
Now One more doubt there is this ROM which I want to flash and it says to wipe dalvik cache before and after flasing the ROM. Please confirm only Factory reset will clear the existing ROM and wiping Cache and Dalvik cache wont affect the existing ROM(or internal SD Data)
Thanks again.

OK well flashing any ROM will replace your current ROM, NONE of your files (music, pictures or things like that) are touched by ANY of these wipes, Factory reset wipes out installed apps, wiping cache and dalvik after flashing or hell wipe data/factory reset won't touch the apps "built-in" to the ROM.
remember the ROM is your operating system and your files (music, pictures, and other stuff) are in the internal SD which is a separate partition from the ROOT system folder where the OS files are.
Wipe Data/Factory Reset - wipes all APPS and Google account information and resets all devices settings to default
as for the other 2 read through the answer here http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/25859/why-do-i-need-to-wipe-dalvik-cache it explains what the other wipes are about.
Hope that covers it, basically jumping from one ROM to another the most you can lose is your basic settings and your APPS (which can be redownloaded, if you didn't use an app to back them up first, but you would lose any progress in your games if you don't back them up).
