[Q] Explorer partition size - HTC Pico (Explorer)

I apologize if this information is available elsewhere. As you can see I am new to this. I HAVE searched endlessly through these forums but cannot find a definitive answer. You who know lots (if not all) please help.I have put JaggyRomV4.1 on my explorer. The instructions all say (in strangely identical wording) not to make your first (FAT32) partition larger than 2GB. For me that leaves 30GB for the sd-ext partition.
It would appear to me that it would make more sense the other way round. The sdcard partition is the only one read by a PC or phone's music player, so 2GB is nothing like big enough.
Assuming it is a good idea to increase the size of sdcard partition do we trust Mini tool's Partition wizard to re-size with no damage to data?

/SD ext partitions should not be greater than 2GB.
That was what it was saying

To me all the instructions read that /sdcard should not be greater than 2GB and that /sd-ext should be the rest. What you are
saying seems much more sensible.
Is Mini Tool Partition Wizard safe to use to resize, or will I lose my data and have to start again?
What are the dangers of a massive /sd-ext partition? It works fine at the moment.
Thanks for your reply

No dangers,
It said that, because that Rom user dta2sd scripts, which will not be able to handle more than 2GB of /SD ext(if filled with apps). I assume you haven't filled it with apps. Even if you did,not much danger.
I don't know about mini tool. Take it's user guide and read. But it doesn't hurt to take a backup of /sdcard and a nandroid.

Thanks again. Guide does say it is safe to resize partitions without loss of data, but I wondered what experience people had had.

wth do you need ext4? Just try ext3.
I do prefer cwm recovery partition (if I had a backup. )
Always do a nandroid before you attempt anything.

I've partitioned mine with mini tool. It didn't make me lose my data. If you have free space on card, resize it and create ext using the UNused space. It'll not hurt your data on fat32.(in my case it didn't).
But it's recommended to backup.
Hit "THANKS". It encourages me.

Managed it OK.
Backed up /sd-ext, deleted that partition, used mini tool to expand /sdcard and make smaller /sd-ext partition (ext3).
recovered data into this new partition and all happy. Shame about the 32GB limit on the card as I have filled most of it with music!

I think we can go to 64 as well, even though not supported, I think.

Wow, never seen one that big - would probably cost as much as the phone at the moment

32 itself creates a problem for me.... opening gallery takes a lot of time.. I wonder what will happen with 64!!

m using the htcsense 4 build #8...so how do i mount my sd-ext and use it as internal...link2sd shows device in use and does not create the mount script

I always see IC roms looking for an ext-4 partition during installation. I never made one. Everything works fine, is that just to make apps moved to the SD faster, or? Basically wondering if I should do this and if so if any steps are needed other than using gparted or somesuch and wiping and reinstalling the ROM.
I appreciate your kind replies to my n00b question. I only ever made special SD partitions pre-froyo or to lag fix the SGS1.

You don't need to do anything. It is formatting the phone memory to ext4. Don't need to make ext4 on your SD card.

About increasing internal memory

Hi guys,
I've again have some stupid questions. I'm sorry if it was answered before, I didn't find. I'm using CM9 build #8.
1. I saw so many ways to use sd card partition to increase internal memory space. Which one should I use?
2. How can I partition my sd card(I have 8GB class 10) using phone(looks like my computer doesn't read sd card with the adapter)? Can someone give me full instructions(something like "1. do this 2. do that and etc")? I want to do everything carefully .
3. I see that I must have kernel, which supports ext partition. Which kernel should I use? I think this one should be the best, it has overclocking support too.
4. How can I install custom kernel?
5. Oh, and a little of topic question, do you think this(the part about ram) will really work?
Thanks. Please answer them .
Easyest way to repartition your sd is with recovery, there is pretty no way, to get it wrong, just remember ext partition, should be no more than 2GB and swap is 0.
About how to move app-s, there are a lot of scripts, my personal choice is S2E, its in the play store, becouse you can leave app data, on the internal memory which helps for smoothnes.
This kernel is good, but it wont work with stock rom, so you should choose some else, and this else is jaggy's or next gen.
Kernel is easy to install, just mount /system and /data, from recovery "mounts and storage" menu, then just flash the kernel, nothing needs to be wiped, or something else.
About the last question I havn't tryed it, but mostly I don't think there is need of something like that, Android know's what to do with the ram, it's not windows.
Oh and there is normal your PC to not find your ext partition if you are running windows system.

I'm using cm9 build #8, will it work? By the way, can you give me a link to the file to download? Because there is only 7z files, which recovery doesn't read. And can I use phonec as usb storage after partitioning and using these scripts?
Thanks a lot .

CM9 already has a custom kernel which supports scripts.. So you dont need to flash a custom kernel.. And as far as the app2sd scripts go, itz a matter of personal choice.. Some people use S2E, because of its simplicity and ease of use, while others use complex ones like d2ext, int2ext, ungaze, etc.. And then there are some who like to use more complex scripts like Mount2SD, which gives options like S2E, but can be used from the terminal.. For eg, you can choose to mount dalvik, cache, app, data to the ext partition..
So, in short, to each his own..
Hope this helped.. :good:

[Q]How to mount the 2nd partition of my SDCARD?

I just created a 2nd partition on my 8GB SD card so that i could move apps to it using link2sd...but when i open link2sd and select the file system of my SD card's 2nd partition (ext4) i get an error:

If you are on Stock then maybe FAT32 partition may have worked.. or even otherwise maybe it will work,.. haven't used a FAT32 sd partition since JaggyROM 2.x.x ( obviously my 1st partition is fat32 ) ... My second partition is an ext and it is advisable to have an ext partition cause there are many scripts like int2ext , s2e, etc which work well with an ext partition...
A partition is Not necessary to made in order for other ROMs to work.. They will work just as well without a partition .. only thing is your internal memory will remain to be 150 mb.. Which is the memory allocated in our phone's nand..
NOTE: Sense 4.0a is the only ROM that you necessarily need to have an SD-EXT Partition of at least 1 GB. Otherwise it won't boot.
thanks for helping me..
I partitioned (1GB of memory to fat32) my sdcard with MiniTool Partition Wizard to facilitate to link2sd long back. Now I am unable to recover that memory and merge into a single partition. Do you guys have solution for this?

If anyone still have the above issue then just change ur sdcard partition type to ext3. Reboot mobile. Better to use link2sd for this.

do it through mini partition tool..delete the created partition..now right click on the 1st partition..slect extend..n drag the cursor till end...n click apply...done
Use Other Kernel
The reason for your second partition is not recognized is you may be at Stock Rom and Stock kernel....
Stock kernel do not support ext partitions...
Use ateeq kernel or cranium kernel for ext4 partition support....
Also use Mounts2sd instead of link2sd...!!!!
I used mounts2sd after I created sd card partition(ext3) but this app said partition not mounted; but link2sd recognised n created scripts.

hey guys, is it possible to access the 2nd partition on Android or under Windows? Use EXt2FS search in google you will get it..
Install it in your windows.. reboot your pc.. Then connect your card.. You will get the second partiton to see plus you can copy paste as well..

For this you don't need s-off (which anyway you can't do). Just use recovery (you already have that) and create partition. If you are using cwm, in advanced menu there is option 'repartition sd card', just follow the steps, and remember this will erase all your info from the sd, so it's better to back that up. Also you can create partition using pc with "mini tool partition wizard" google it. Another thing don't make ext partition bigger than 2GB and don't create swap partition.
That's it. Have fun
Edit: @Saumitra Yadav- damn you are fast , but what you explayned is........ why create another partition, sd card is already fat partitioned? (Maybe I'm wrong but I think link2sd also works with ext)
Edit2: Yes it needs second partition which can be fat32, but it also can be ext, so just make ext

first time in your post, I saw op's cm10, and forgot that possibility that actually stock rom doesn't support ext.
There was very long time ago when my phone haded stock rom.
already tried creating it...get an error saying that mount script cannot be created.
link2sd faq quote :
Q. I get "Mount script cannot be created. cannot create /system/etc/install-recovery.sh: not enough memory" error.
Some HTC devices are "NAND locked". On "NAND locked" (or "S-ON") devices the /system partition is write-protected by the bootloader and thus cannot be modified even if you have root privileges.
In order to use Link2SD you need to do "S-OFF" to disable this NAND lock. (a.k.a. "NAND unlock" or "unlocking the bootloader")

Extend EXT2 partition without losing data

Hi guys,
I have a rooted HTC Wildfire S with a stock ROM and I have setup an 2nd partition formatted to EXT2, which I use for a really cool app called Link2SD.
Problem is I've underestimated an appropriate size for this 2nd partition and I'm come to the situation of having 10MB left. As I have a 32GB SD card I would like extend this partition, but without losing the data, is this possible?
I have ClockworkMOD as my recovery and this is what I used to initially partition the SD card. However, what I would like to know is if I will lose the data on both partitions of the card if I attempt to do this?
Much help appreciated,
Will

If you are on linux then your ext2 partition will be detected and you can see the contents inside it and backup it..
If on Windows there is a software called EXt2IFS something like that..
Install it.. It will be able to detect your ext partition.. Then you can backup..
Related to your extended partition thing..
Yes you have create partition again.. This will end up reformatting your card and partitioning again..
Thank you very much for your reply. I have another question. When I tried to backup my EXT2 partition in the past for something else using Linux, it said I needed root permission. I managed to gain root access by right clicking on the enclosing folder and selecting open as root user option. However, when I tried to restore the contents back to the SD card all my linked app files that LinkSD made weren't working. How do I get around this if I decide to use Linux again?, Though if I use the Windows program, will I be able to get root access at all?

Well buddy seriously to say i wouldn't recommend to restore that ext partition.. As you are saying you want to restore your config of Link2sd.. Well to say it will not work cz the system links get disturbed due to removal of partition or modify..
well best to say i would recommend to take a backup of your ROM then partition the card..
Well to say i would recommend to you first switch off your phone.. Put it in card reader then partition it..
Restore the backup then see if it works.. I think you are on stock rom..
You can try this method:
1. Make a backup of your current ROM Using the recovery..
2. Switch off the phone then put it in card reader.. Re partition your card using card reader..
3. Then restore the backup..
See if this works..

Cheers pal. I will let you know how it goes later on, because I'm not near a PC at the moment to copy the nandroid backup from CWM to my HDD. I'd rather be extra safe and make a backup of a backup as the re-partition will most likely wipe the whole SD card.
