[Q] Oven QuickFix – Will it work for Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
So it came. My Nexus S betrayed me. I started getting random "inabilities" to boot my phone. It was rather not booting than booting. The phone was booting like 1 out of 10 times (stuck at Google Logo). Suddenly I found out that applying pressure to the back of the phone (to the SIM card slot area) while pressing the power button solves the issue. At least temporarily.
The conclusion I came to is the following: Given this information (applying pressure) I came to the conclusion, that the soldered-on storage chip is not so soldered-on.
What about this: If oven-baking our laptops can repair them, is it possible to fix my Nexus as well? That is the question for you, guys! Will it take the heat? Can some components fall off the board when heated? Or get burn? If so, can I apply heat directly on that damn chip? That is the metaquestion!
Thanks in advance!

How can you fix a laptop by putting it in the oven dude ? Are you serious ? Ive never heard of that. Ever.
And i can't encourage you that this is a good idea cus it doesn't sound good.

Here you go.

And you're welcome eventually

I would rather use a proper heatgun and try to heat the place little bit while isolating rest of the "working" parts.
But honest advice, spare yourself the trouble of disasembling everything and start saving for new phone :/

Awkward solution. Anyway i think that the device itself cant handle 385°…

Maybe I could take aluminum tape and create rectangle around the chip, then heatgun the chip. That should work…

AW: [Q] Oven QuickFix – Will it work for Nexus S?
Oven quickfix does indeed work. I once repaired a HP nx7000 by disassambling the NB and put the motherboard into the oven. Worked like a charm afterwards.

I found out that my coleague has a heatgun and his friend even has a machine for this (reballing stuff I would guess).
It is, however, good to know, that I'm not lost once I find out I'm out of RMA period. I *THINK* my phone does does have a valid warranty BUT I'm not quite sure I can find my papers and get to the store soon enough. It's indeed good to have a backup…

Go for the heatgun if possible. A lot of the parts on phone are extremely heat sensitive unlike larger hardware and you would likely end up damaging something else rather than just fixing the storage. Have put back to life quite a few devices using a heatgun and proper shielding, mainly xbox 360, video cards and other random peripherals.
Still would save for a new phone though, because it's likely it might die completely on you in the close future.

I was just trying to take a picture in the dark yesterday and someone asked me if my phone had a flash on it . If the price is right I might consider getting one.
The inventor is Italian and he needs 26K$ to initiate mass manufacturing.
the price - 25-30$ plus 10$ delivery seems exaggerated, but maybe it can be lowered. I think it's a great idea.
This is the best DIY alternative I have found...
1. Back replacement - Dealextreme 3.9$
2. 10 3.7V LED - eBay - 8.3$
3. 20 Mini push-buttons - eBay - 2.99$
overall
15$ per one device
5.03$ per device for 10 devices
4.88$ per device for 20 devices
plus wires and some solution for the + and - legs out.
EDIT : OK, gave up, just ordered one...
That looks really cool. Do you think it can be controlled by the software, or do you have to physically press the button for the led to turn on?

You have to press the button. There is no path for it be hooked up. Granted with full jtag of the chip, you could probably find a few GPIO that aren't use and use that to trigger a signal to a small timer chip to make it flash, but one it requires fully knowing the GPIO of the chip and how it's used in our phone, and finding pathways from the chip to solder to, and opening your phone and soldering to the board which is very, very, very, very small soldering.
Basically, no. lol. Press the button, and it shines an LED light which lights up a scene slightly.

No, the funding needed is the amount needed to get a company to start making them and make an initial batch. They're not going to make molds and all that stuff for 4 cases.
He has 5 days left with only 1,000 out of his 26,000 dollar goal so it looks like its not happening
I already ordered one, so I still hope to get it (as a gesture to the true supporters).
I think the draw was the price being too high.
Anyway, I liked the idea and I will make one myself if this initiative gets cancelled.
As one of the contributors (donated 30$) I just got this message via mail (also appears in the indiegogo site updates) :
Hi everybody! unfortunately we didn’t reach our goal to start the production of COVERLIGHT, but thanks to all yours feedback and suggestions we understood how to improve this idea… Now we are working to an universal version of coverlight, which is controlled by a camera app… It will be compatible with all the devices, because it’s a “plug and play” device Follow @coverlight1 on twitter or facebook to stay informed about it… Happy New Year!
A "plug and play" flash compatible with all devices huh? That sounds interesting. I'm guessing it would be plugged into the audio jack? I'm glad the idea wasn't abandoned, thanks for the update itz

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Viatek-LED-...579855?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item518e2bb44f
Im glad the project was not abandoned seams like it has a lot of potential.
I'm having some thoughts about implementing a solution that will include :
1. universal compatibility (for all devices).
2. involve no cover change.
3. include no batteries.
but this leads me to some technical questions I will be glad if our experts can answer :
1. Is it possible to make an app virtual flash machine, that when using any camera app - it will be tricked to think that we actually have a flash led ?
I suppose it is possible...
2. In that case is it possible to get the camera app shooting trigger via the audio jack or power jack ? I suppose it is possible, but yet again, how do you make the hardware recognize this trigger ?
3. Is it possible to consume power from the power jack (usually used to charge the device).
If it is, then we can send the power signal instead of a trigger and that could simplify the hardware needed...
If the answer to all of these is yes - then we can make a simple LED flash, (audio?) power jack cable, possibly direction adjustable cable. it will be light weight, reliable and simple to use and involve no cover swapping.
most of the work will be done by the virtual flash machine app and the device hardware.

This part should be possible with usb otg support
I took apart my powerskin today and I think I can come up with a way to wire a LED in the case and power it from the power skin battery. It's just going to be finding a good suitable LED for it. Obviously no triggering from a camera apps.

[Q] Killing O3D

Hi,
I've already loosed my patience for LG. Today I've sent phone 4 time for warranty, including one software problem.
I'll just want to kill a phone completely so they send me a new one.
The question is, how to do it right? May i run stability tests since CPU will fry? Maybe you have other solutions? Killing memory chip?

Still i'm O3D owner since 07.2011 and we all know problems it have since release (GHOST CALLS). I'm really think about getting this thing killed and sending it to LG repair center for exchange to other phone. Not to mention that I received phone yesterday and today it was sent back to repair (LG technicians damaged volume rocker).
Any ideas how to make phone unusable and still have warranty?
Overclocking is out of questions since they check the update counter. Samsung ones are pretty obvious but LG is very good at hiding things.

Exactly. it's a standard protection practices, also common in PowerPC and x86 processors, which they trip at 80 to 100 Celsius - close to the boiling point of the water.

I already had a MB replaced month after purchase. I've was using CM7 then and internal memory just died, still I was able to go into recovery or flash a different rom.
Maybe I've stated it wrong, the phone need to be broken, so not exactly a MB or so. Maybe a charging output, mini-jack (just repaired 2 days ago), mic - whatever. It will be a 3 hardware repair, and then I'll be allowed to ask for new phone (Nexus maybe).

Easiest way is to pour water on it for 5-10 seconds turned on since there is electricity I dont know if it safe do it more I never tried it so im just guessing Then Just pull it out Dont dry it completly just wipe it little bit with towel and use it,dont turn it off. just use it phone parts should die if only screen dies then get to the motherboard and cut some cable lol. I dont know why Im helping you thats too brutal but it will work for sure
It may work, but who know if there's humidity sticker inside the phone, the water sensitive sticker's useless anyways. And the most likely worst scenario would be for the flash chip to erase itself.

I'm still waiting for the phone to back from service. Maybe i will just play with mini-jack again. Plugging headphones and moving jack inside should damage stick points, of course i'll make gentle moves. Or.... CM Flashlight set on maximum brightness can damage camera LED?
I just received answer form LG, any hardware repair is counted as significant one and will allow replacement of the phone (at least I'll be able to ask for that.

Still waiting for phone. I will probably start with moving headphones in mini-jack back and forth. Other than that, CM and "full power" flashlight.
On the other side I can just count on LG, maybe they send me a damaged phone as last time.

[Q] SK4G drains fast...Too fast. And SD card Module probably damaged

I need a bit of help concerning the SK4G sd card reader: This phone may take quite a few drops and scratches, but the SD reader doesn't seem able to. If i drop my phone just the right way, the sd card seems to malfunction and certain stuff crashes. The thing is, my sd card is just fine. Tested it multiple times. I can take it out, wait a few seconds, put it back and reboot til it works. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY PHONE? PS: I think some part of my phone that reads the battery is fried. I get rediculous battery drain, like 1 percent gone every minute. This isnt normal, is it? Any insght solutions or help would be appreciated.

No, it's not normal. How old is the battery on your phone? Is it bulging out at all anywhere? It could be in need of replacement. Also, which ROM are you using? Maybe something got corrupted or didn't load correctly? Fishing a bit...
I would be aware of the rom being used as already said. Try out a battery calibrating app.
As for the SD card, is it partitioned? If so maybe that could be affecting it oddly. Just some ideas, hopefully it isn't hardware /:

I've seen this effect on stock and on every other rom I've tried. The Sidekick was a gift from an uncle, so I'm not sure what he did to it....nevertheless, the battery is reported by most battery apps as "good". The battery is not bulging, and it charges. I'm guessing its hardware; I just hope I can afford to fix it.

Nope sd card not partitioned, rom seems fully loaded, its GloriousOverdosev5 although I do have some issues with it not related to battery.

That's one of the biggest issues with every single device in the Sidekick series of phones. When it comes to chargers they have always been "finicky". I'm pretty sure it has to do with wattage, but it's a problem that has stayed consistant.
And I guess that's not so bad, maybe it really is something in it's circuitry. I wish I could be more help my friend. /=

True-true I personally would jump for the s4. I like the idea of a waterproof phone, because lets face it, we may not all send our devices toilet-bound but rain and spills are just things that happen. Heck I'd test it myself xD I'm curious exactly what extent this can be used in water...(underwater? ;D) But yeah, I would definitely take the s4
Whoa! The s4 is waterproof?
I suppose it could be battery messing with things, maybe I could carry a spare and avoid dropping this
If sidekicks will continue, tmo had better learn from thier mistakes or this will be like the 4g

Yesterday I yanked out my battery because of a critical crash after binge web browsing - the battery was at 34 percent but after rebooting it was at less than 10!
This morning I tried to balance my phone on a perch 4 ft off the ground and it fell. Stright on its back. Next thing I know, its crash-booting and I have to yank out, put batt back in turn on and hope SD comes back on. Now I turn it on and SD was working until i accidentally just unplugg it and it booted into charge mode and batt has 1 percent, even though I know its supposed to have like TWENTY percent.
Any way, I have it in charge mode at like 1 percent and I'm trying to turn it back on by accident just well turn it right back to charge mode (you know what I mean right)
and when it starts charging again the battery level is 20 percent. TWENTY!!!!!!!! UGH I CANT STAND THIS THING GOD GIVE ME PATIENCE TIL I GET GINGERBREAD

Earthing. Period.
Capacitive touchscreens (the prevalent form of touchscreens these days) are quite sensitive to electric charges. Without going to deep, let's just say that non-genuine or replacement chargers might often be of poor quality which might not take proper care of earthing of residual current, and things of that sort. These residual charges can make their way up to the sensor part of the touchscreen, where these are falsely recognised as touches.
Alternatively, one can also experience this phenomena of "ghost touches" on using genuine chargers as well if the earthing circuit of the building you live in is not proper. So, those who experience this on PC-USB charging as well, your building's earthing might be the culprit.
Though earthing requirement comes into play only when some charge is being leaked somewhere inside the device, this is fairly common, and a proper earthing is always recommended. It need not necessarily mean that your particular device faulty. You'll just have to take care of the earthing.
NOTE: This might be just ONE of MANY explanations. But I found this to be the usual cause.
Hope this helps.

But I live in Eastern Europe and my charger is with two pins - without pin for grounding or any physical possibility to touch it. Sorry, I do not want to mess with your good explanation, but for me it looks like something that "grounds" phone or touch panel itself is missing inside these phones. I can't remember exactly, but there was some mess with missing grounding by loose pin in HTC phones (unsure what model, maybe Desire S or EVO 3D). Probably this is a SoRRy's flaw in design.

Water damage

Soooo I'm in a super jam. My WiFi works and my Bluetooth works but no cell service. I found the replacement speaker online for like $10 so that's fine....how do I go about repairing the cell radio? I didn't see that part anywhere. Is it part of a larger module?
Any insight is super helpful. Thanks guys!

Before you do anything drastic, I'd verify its the not the sim card destroyed. I wet my device once and two days later all was fine except no reception and it turned out to be the sim card was corroded. You can also try cleaning the damaged sim card in alcohol but that's a last resort method.
I put the Sim card in my nexus 7 and it registered on network. Couldn't load any webpages or videos but it showed me as having "H full bars"

It could still be the card at that point. I would still get a new one because you would need it either way. Worst case you paid 10$ for something you're going to need anyway. (If the damage was that deep it no doubt must have hit the sim card) its better to explore the cheapest option right off the bat before going in to repairs that mess with the inside of the phone.
Well I need to replace the speaker anyway

So I'm actually posting from the damaged device. Turned it on today and the speaker is working. My WiFi is working as well as my GPS module. Camera and flash are both working. I guess I need to just try a new Sim card. There is definitely water marks behind the screen..anyone have any ideas on how to clear that up?

My mic works too. Just tried it with a voice search. The vibrator motor seems to go in and out

I actually just now had signal for a few seconds. No data but had bars. I intermittently have the display changing from "no service" to "emergency calls only"

Anyone have any thoughts as to what would cause the intermittent signal? Is it a sim reader failure? and antenna failure? Something that can be repaired?
My USB connectivity came back!!! Can go through all my files and adb connectivity is functional. Anyone know if there is a diagnostic that I can run to find out what parts have failed? I'd like to just have to replace my antenna if that's all I need

yeah this thread as you can see is kinda dead. im like the only poster almost so i opened another thread asking for something different. if the mods want to consolidate the two thats ok by me. Sorry for clogging up the forum, just dying for some assistance from the great minds of our community
You're wasting your time in my opinion. 99.999 percent of the time... If something doesn't work after water got to it.... It's fried. Would be a gigantic coincidence that something went weird the exact same time. ?

ok well it was not completely sumberged.
the antenna cable is a separate module in the device
If everything else is working perfectly it would be very hard for me( a EE trained person) to assume that the motherboard is "fried"
im not even suggesting that something "went weird". LOL i am suggesting that possibly the antenna got water damage while the rest of the device survived. I am curious whether there is a diagnostic software that will let me know what hardware pieces are damaged. As it is right now i dont have a multimeter or i could just open the sucker up and resistance check everything LMAO
The radios toast. Just because everything else works doesn't mean the radio survived. Had the same issues with my wifes phone. She gave it a tea bath. I took it apart, cleaned it with electrical cleaner, dried it in rice for three days. Put it back together and everything worked great. Except the radio. Sold it for parts and moved on.
