[Q] Safely disconnecting with CM10 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey everyone, I'm currently running the latest stable version of CM10. My phone also has a microSD card inserted in it.
My question is about connecting to the computer via USB port. Normally, with stock, when you connect to a computer you have to allow it to connect and disconnect it before you remove it from the computer. I think it has to do with USB debugging (which I have off)? However, when I use CM10, I get no prompt whatsoever.
Is it safe to just put it in and pull it out (that's what she said)?
If I enable USB debugging will I get this prompt again? Is it even possible to get this prompt again?
I've tried looking all over for an answer, but it's kind of difficult to word in a search. I've been just pulling the plug, and I'd really hate to damage my precious SR!
Thanks, y'all

bump

When you plug the usb in pull down the menu on your phone and it'll give you the option to connect usb. Just Swype down from the top of your screen.
God promised men that he'd put beautiful women in all corners of the world. Then he laughed and laughed and made the world round

I think CM10 and 10.1 have USB OTG which means you don't have to allow/disallow it anything. Just pull the usb cord and that's it.

Excellent, thanks!

I don't have this device but when you install JB, it use MTP mode as default, which is a Microsoft transfer standard. MTP mode allow you to use the phone storage space (and Sdcard) while transferring at the sametime, for example, if you have apps installed or files on your Sdcard they will still be accessible while plugged in. You can unplug it anytime and there are less chances of files corruption. However MTP also have its limitation such as being retarded.
The other mode is USB MSC (aka UMS aka usb mass storage) which we're familiar with. You could pull the chord with this mode too since its really how USB transferring is designed, but it's better to safe remove first to prevent corruption.
USB debugging is something different which allow ADB access, which I recommend turning off when not in use for security. It should work with both UMS and MTP mode.
USB OTG means on the go, which allow plugging in USB peripherals such as flash drives and is only available for phones that have both the hardware and kernel that support it. Sometimes you also need additional mounting software such as Stick Mount.
Some phones allow you to switch between UMS and MTP mode. Most newer ones running JB only have MTP mode and donot allow UMS mode at all, such as Nexus devices and Galaxy SIII. Also if the device only work with MTP you will not be able to mount USB storage to your PC while in CWM.

Rooted and now mounting USB does not work!

I've been sideloading apps for awhile now non-rooted, and copying stuff to/from my phone by mounting the USB.
Today, I decide to root using the 1-click root method, and it works fine...
However, when I connect my phone via USB (debugging on of course) and then mount my USB my PC no longer recognizes the SD cards like it did before???
Can somebody help me?
I've had two of these phones already (first one had the auto tun off problem).
Both have had this problem when I initially got them. The previous one had it after rooted as well. Its not really a bug maybe. Just go into settings>applications>USB settings and choose anything other than "mass storage". Then exit out, plug in the usb, let it do its thing (it wont work). No unplug the USB cable and go back into settings and change it back to "mass storage". It should work then.
I think if you just select anything other than mass storage then choose mass storage again it should work too. Its a little finicky. Once it starts working, it won't stop though. Just that initial connection I guess.
Try changing usb plug at pc. There has been issues with usb ports on main board. Also update chipset drivers.

Captivate will not connect to computer

I'm trying to unlock my dads old Captivate, but I need to connect it to the computer to do this. No matter what I do, this phone will not connect or be recognized by the computer. I plug it into the computer and it makes the little beep it makes when you connect, but thats it. No "USB Connected" on the top bar or anything.
I can connect my captivate fine, its just his. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and that wont work. Any ideas?
Do you have the drivers installed?

Ye, the drivers are installed. Would it be a driver problem though if my one captivate works, but the other? That sounds like a phone problem to me.
Settings> applications>usb(something or other)> mass storage.
Also make sure usb debugging is enabled...
The froyo settings might be different...the usb options could be in "wireless and network" instead of applications.

Nope, that doesnt work either. Its like its not even connected. Nothing showing up on my computer, nothing on the phone. The only thing that shows up when you plug it in is the charger icon comes on to let you know its charging.
i would recommend that you try another computer if that doesn't work, restore your phone to factory and if that doesn't work then you have two out of three possibilities that might lol, be seriously i think its not a drivers issue if the other phone is working. It might be a problem with the computer recognizing the port i really cant think of anything else..

If it's not connecting to either captivate it's a driver issue. Make sure that USB debugging is on and that under the application usb setting you have it set to ask on connect. Try a different usb port on the pc, or another cable. I had a bad cable a while back that would charge but not connect, it was even the one that came with the phone.
Use a USB port off the back of the computer, coming DIRECTLY off the MB. There have been tons of issues with using remote USB ports. If it's beeping when it connects, it's being seen by the computer. Just that there's a problem with getting the proper info.
I get this problem sometimes too. This is how I solve it. Under USB settings select Samsung Kies and plug the USB cable into your computer and phone. See if your computer recognizes your phone. Mine won't recognize Mass Storage but will Kies. I don't have the program installed so windows will say Drivers Not Successfully Installed. Once you have done that, restart the computer and phone with USB cord unplugged. Once both come back on, switch your phone back to Mass Storage and plug in your USB cable to both the computer and phone and see if it will be detected by your computer. If not I would try a different USB cable. That is what works for me when I have that problem.

Some cappies have issues with generic cables. Make its the original or a high quality one.

Would be a good idea to check if the following
1. Settings- applications- USB settings : make it ask on connection.
2. Change the USB port which you connect

[Q] USB Mass Storage Won't Connect

I upgraded to Sky-ICS RC7.4 Speed yesterday and today. Obviously the USB mass storage was working earlier because I got the .zip file for the upgrade on the phone. Well, just a little while ago I tried to connect so I could pull those zip files off just to save some room and it won't connect.
I can charge the phone, the laptop(Windows 7) and the phone both make sound/vibrate when connected. BUT, with I go to "Connect storage to PC" it tells me to unplug the cable, which it hasn't before but I did it anyway. I unplug the cable press the connect button again it states to connect the cable, I do. Press the button to connect and I get the same result. I've tried enable USB debugging and try again and it states to disable, blah blah blah.
It's great that I can charge the phone via USB all day long but really sucky that I can't access any of my files via my laptop.
Anyone had this issue or know of any fixes that may alleviate this issue? I sure would appreciate your help.
FYI, USB drivers are installed on the laptop and reapplied after the the issue of not being able to connect USB mass storage...
update: I am able to see the two mounts in computer management on my Windows 7 machine but not able to access them through My Computer.
I was reading from other threads about a possible Windows issue, how I find it unlikely, but I did a system restore from an earlier date and that made no difference. It's still a matter of the phone connecting completely to the pc.
Also tried different ports and usb cables, no avail.
I could really use some input so that if need be I can access the files on the phone to either flash back to stock or at least modify the files I have on there now to let me be able to attach my mass storage. I'm liking the the rom it's just a few little things like this that are making me completely love it.
i have the same issue if i plug in to the front usb ports. no problems with the back and its only been since i updated to seans latest speed stripped ICS rom
I was having the same issues. I turned the phone off, took the battery out, and then restarted it. It worked.

Correct; you need to reboot your phone because you probably connected / disconnected too fast and the phone is bugged out now.
I'm on 7.4 speed stripped and its working fine for me. Did you try installing the Samsung USB drivers exe in the dev forum?

This is My also Case on my tablet. i cant connect to usb mass storage please help me what to do. icant remove the battery of my tablet and i only open it after 5 hrs so how?

[Q] Stupid questions thread 2

Thought I'd start a second thread since the first stupid questions thread is already forty something pages long.
USB storage -- is that just being able to access the SD card from the computer via the USB cable when the phone is booted up, being able to read off a USB flash card from the phone, or being able to access the computer from the phone via the USB cable?
I haven't heard of the third thing but I read about some tablets being able to read USB flash drives.
I read more of the original stupid questions thread and it is really good. Maybe the monitors can close this thread. Sorry.

I would say "USB storage" is accessed when the phone is connected to the computer as a "mass storage device" giving access to read or write on the sd card no matter the state of the device.
As for accessing the computer from the phone I don't think this would qualify or that there are any apps that support this type of connection via USB. I do use apps to access my computer via wifi for file transfer and mouse/keyboard control but don't sewer the point either with a USB connection. Realistically if your phone is connected to the computer you are in a close enough proximity to just use the computer unless you have a really really really long USB cord.

Help me recovering Samsung Galaxy Mini II

Hello.
Short story: my phone was a little wet and i have some issues with it, mostly i want to get a mass storage to get working. (cant root)
Basically at first the phone didn't even want to charge, when i connected it to the PC windows was giving me an error that the device cannot be recognized, and couldn't install the drivers. (i had Kies installed)
I dried it completely, now the phone turns on without any problem, when i connect it to the pc the phone is recognizing connection (i hear sound + the button backlights are firing up for a sec)
Homever, windows is not detecting any USB device at all, and in about phone/info it says the phone is connected to the AC instead of USB.
When i connect it with USB there is no dropdown in notification to choose from charging, storage etc.
There is also manual usb storage mounting under settings/communication/usb settings , when i'm trying to mount here it just says to connect the phone with usb cable (not detecting connection, homever the backlight + sound is here after connecting, and it's charging)
I tried connecting it with usb debugging on/off even tried to fiddle with in service menu (*#7284#) but nothing.
And since i cannot get the usb storage working basically i cannot flash anything or root it.
Also the USB cable is not a Samsung but an HTC one, could this be a problem? (people in different thread said those cables are the same so it shouldnt be a problem, same amperage, same stick etc.)
Even tried to install MountUSB Widget from market, but it doesn't work when im trying to start the app it's force closing, when i make widget on desktop and press it the phone just vibrate for 1 sec and nothing happens.
When i connect phone with Kies AIR and it works, i mean it shows the storage information, also recognize the phone model correctly, how much free space i have on internal and on SD card but i cannot click "show in explorer" it's greyed out.
Any experts out there could help me? :crying:
Just a blind guess, try a USB cable which supports your device. If it doesn't help, I'm afraid it's a hardware problem and you will have to consult some hardware expert.
