I got his cool live wallpaper called Wavescape. Some of the areas that move can become a bright white color for about 4 seconds. Will this shorten the life of the organic LED...or make the LED pixels not as bright?
Live wallpapers are vbetter for tour screen. White wwore our my ns4g amoled where the clock was and the white lettering on my keyboard from massive texting . Try to use the least amount of active white that will really use the same spot. Hide top notification bar, use themes, use non white font if possible.

Technically yes, but the amount of time it will shorten the subpixel life is so insignificant that it doesn't really matter. You will however get better battery life with all black backgrounds as black pixels use zero power.
Its significant when you have white webpages games and etc. Experience. Only had this ns4g for about half a year, and the white damage annoys me enough right now in text fields where I see this white ghost

yes, the image retention on these OLED screens is horrible
OLED screens blow away LCDs in almost every way, except for one, longevity. The blue emmiter subpixels wear faster then the others. Static images especially ones using blue subpixels can damage your screen.
I notice that most themes use loads of blue everywhere. That is also the color which burns in the quickest on OLED screens. Also static images like the battery, wifi etc at the top are always there. This also can result in screen burn. Unless you want your screen to start to look like an old Pac-Man arcade screen care should be taken.
Since this is the Infuse section and everyone has an OLED screen has anyone made a theme using colors with as little blue as possible (white uses blue sub pixels so that don't count). Colors with mostly red green mixtures are the most OLED safe. I wouldn't mind if those static indicators on the top at least were all in yellow, red etc and at a lower brightness than the rest of the screen.
Idk about you but my screen IBM's super Amoled + not oled ....

OLED, Super AMOLED, AMOLED plus, super duper AMOLED 12,000 +, all the same tech.
The characteristics of the emmiters in Organic Light Emmiting Diodes are exactly the same, blue wears faster. The only differences are how it is driven (AM= Active Matrix) and the plus is just the pattern of the subpixels (RGB or pentile). If it has OLED anywhere in it, your screen WILL get images burned in if you have static images on the screen for too long and blue will wear sooner, much sooner, than the rest of the colors.
So BE CAREFULL! if you have your brightness cranked avoid static images, unless you like them so much that you want them permanently part of the screen!
Is there a way I can hack a ROM to just change the graphics? I am no coder but I can tweak the art.

actually i do have a solution if you dont mind things looking funny. other than looking for themes that have less blue and white and purple you could download chainfire 3d and use one of the night mode settings. the red or amber or green settings should help. chainfire 3d is some kind of intermediary driver that can allowq the gpu to process apis for other gpu's (assuming you have the appropriate files that are surprisingly hard to find but i have copies if anyone needs them for a specific game or anything) but one of the features is for either night viewing or for power saving and (assuming you have oled of some kind) and it will selectively remove or reduce the levels of the different colors. this could also be good for using your phone as a hud (heads up display) or just making navigation a little less distracting at night.
edit; now ther eis a plugin for the pay version that will automagically change color settigns based on light conditions and time of day so you can have full color when it's important and reduce blue in the evening so it's not so blinding and to save your screen from excessive blue burn in. it can also set the colors according to color temperature or custom rgb mixing.

As often as new phones come out on the market, I'll probably upgrade my phone before it has a chance to overdose on blue.
Besides, isn't that what your auto screen shutoff feature is for?
When you are actively using you're phone which means the screen is constantly changing, I don't see much chance of images getting burned onto the screen. If you like to leave your screen on and look at the pretty pictures, that might be different, ie. you will risk burning images onto your screen!

Except that some things don't really change much while using like the battery, clock, wifi etc at the top of the screen. Mine came flashed with a custom ROM (bought used) and with the theme that is on there the guy who made it went mental with blue. Everything is blue, even the wifi and battery charge indicator.
It is time to start pushing developers of apps you like but you dont get BLACK skins/modes/themes. Start pressing developers to optimize every app they create or update by including BLACK theme to save our batteries and often life saving extra minutes of being connected before we they are drained.
Many people will appreciate if there will be at least section or website listing such a soft which contains apps with black themes.
One of worst examples is Talk Google.
Purely white and with no choice, at all, maybe good for LCD phones,
but hostile for AMOLED batteries.
What's needed I think is an accessibility setting that inverts colors, I'm photosensitive so it would be lovely to turn all the painful white on my phone to a nice non-irritative black.
But
it would need to be app based selective.
would work nice for Google Talk but Skype wihch i guess will never have black skin,
especially under strictly conservative and not always practical Microsoft management mindsets, Skype would turn to orange-like tones after reversing colours.
so i think that black skin is simple to including, and doesnt require crerativity to compose, its just white on black, easy peasy quick and nice.
so why it is not standard yet?
Agree i have a GNex and would love apps to have black themes, like some twitter apps as well as facebook. The major apps should have black themes as Samsung is one of the largest handset makers and they are obsessive with AMOLED

some amoled screens have those nasty lines from the darker backgrounds though. i thought that was an ongoing issue.
How is that? Amoled and Super Amoled are supposed to have less battery usage. It used to consume only about 7:40% from the battery.
Sent from my S+
whereas LCD consumed up to 70% of mean battery capacity an all white screen on AMOLED should only consume 50%. There would have to be something else like processor, with today's dual core, 1.5 freq, etc. eating battery life. Lithium is an old technology that is now affordable. It is also a highly reactive and temperamental technology too. Everything from heat to humidity are enemies to lithium.
Besides this though, I agree. We can change backgrounds, etc in Linux and Windows, why not Android?
White screens are so terrible in the dark x2
we all agree with that, but i think developers will change the layouts of games or so
having amoled plus screen and using it with %25 brightness to save battery life is just
Black screens would be nice to save battery. I use bgoog as my home page in the browser to save power.
I leave my brightness at the lowest setting majority of the time, but leave it in auto when I'm out in the sun.

Hi,
I have a ZTE Blade and the screen various in some versions, some have AMOLED and others not. Has some way to figure out if I have a AMOLED screen or not ?
Dark skinned apps n themes look way better imo...hope developers take note.
Dark skinned apps do save a lot of battery and save your eyes from that bright white screen when you look at your phone in the middle of the night. But the white is nice at the same time. I guess I'm indifferent about it.
If you cant spot difference in darkness, go and google it. Find out tech-spechs from websites.

Update: 6/5/2013
* replaced method 1 with new method
Update: 19/7/2013
* added new hardware level fix for 9500 users
As of now we all know that almost all s4 units is suffering from smearing issue. After fiddling with some apps here and there I found a temporary solution , this should be handy until Samsung fixes it.
I suggest two method for this issue, Method 1 adjusts the rgb values of the screen(overlays) .Method 2 adjusts the contrast levels of the screen.
With both the above mentioned methods the black levels are not pitch black but will be on par with the blacks of s3 or anyother amoled screens. I prefer method 1, if you guys face any problems with method 1 then you can try method 2.
Method 1:
1.install screen adjuster app from market.
2.Set the values of green, blue, red between 5 to10(I prefer 5) and turn on the filter
3.job done
Method 2:
1.install screen adjuster app from market.
2.change the contrast level from -0 to -10(you can go upto -20 depending on how far your eyes can balance between smearing and pitch black)
3.turn on the adjuster.
4.job done
Method 3: (HARDWARE LEVEL FIX ONLY FOR 9500 USERS)
This method fixes the smearing at hardware level and changes contrast level of black backgrounds without touching other colors and dosent drains battery like screen adjuster. Thankst to @AndreiLux and @Slimmer77 for their contribution on screen calibration for 9500

One is software and causes battery drain and applies to all colours if you want it or not, and the other is hardware, costs nothing and targets only black.

Will give a 1.56% grey on blacks and removes all smearing. You need to set digital brightness reduction to 0 though since I didn't plan for this use-case and it negates the above "fix".

1.Install a custom kernel that supports screen calibration.
2.goto screen tab

3.Flash the attached zip file
4.job done
Users who hate the non black background(especially it looks poor when used along with smearing fix) introduced by samsung on newer roms can flash teh blac background mod attached in this post
Note: Running screen adjuster on background will disable the "install" button while installing apps manually, so disable screen adjuster before you start installing something and resume using screen filter after the installation is over

Personally, if you can fix or at least hide the issue with the above then at the very worst Samsung may change some settings in later roms to the same effect. I am hoping that it is actually a driver issue and a proper fix will come along....
This is an assumption but as the above works then I cannot see it being a hardware issue but then I am no expert.....
Won't this affect battery life? It seems to negate the power saving effect of AMOLED. I believe the smearing comes from the pixels going from off (black) to on (grey) and that switch time not happening fast enough. This app and workaround does definitely work, but it seems that it works because it's changing everything from black to veryyy very dark grey (still looks pretty black to me) however that means that the pixels aren't off if they're displaying grey instead of black right?
ok thx balagamer but its only patch for now hope samsung will fix it as i dont wanna blacks like on SGS3 and i really hope sammys fix wont be the same and they will steal the true black from us...that why i bought amoled right for the blacks

I believe this is indeed the case. Samsung could fix that by maintaining the pixels lit at the lowest power level, like with the previous Galaxy phones. I'm not sure if it's worth it though. Hopefully there'll be some even better work-around.

thats how samsung displayed the blacks in their past galaxy devices. With s4 the black pixels are completely turned off which is not the case with previous galaxy devices. hence even if samsung rolls out a fix they will simply make something similar to what we acheived with "screen adjuster". and dont forget you can still tweak the values in screen adjuster and find the best balance between black and smearing effect, the value "5" mentioned is suitable for me , it may or may not suit others.
so thay fu*ked up display also on previous phones and hide it behind the worse blacks really bravo samsung. I have my SGS4 from yesterday and have to say I see it clearly, the edges of grey lines are getting to purple colour. But I dont care because I can see it only if Im focusing on it. But for normal use you focus on text and what are you looking for and not to some grey lines right? So, Im rather happy with my super deep blacks...maybe some good AOSP/AOKP/Cyanogen will replace TW interface...

I'm not impressed by the screen at all, dead pixels, really bad ghosting and the screen turns pink at the bottom.
HTC One screen at least only had dead pixels.
So I have no idea how no one has noticed or mentioned about this feature in the new Moto X Pure Edition but it has a new feature under display settings called "Color Mode" where you can now choose between "normal" and "vibrant" screen colors.
Since they moved this year from AMOLED to TFT LCD this year I guess they wanted to give us an option to choose from

He has the black/dark trim
So I will say after switching between modes for the past couple days, on and off. Vibrant mode is definitely the better color mode. With normal the colors seem more washed out and whiter, while vibrant makes the colors darker and less white, while at the same time making the whites whiter(if that makes sense)

Depends on what your definition of better is. The normal mode provides more accurate colors than vibrant mode, nearly matching my 2015 MacBook Pro. Most people are just used to oversaturated screens, especially those coming from AMOLED screens, so they will probably prefer the vibrant mode. I'm just glad Motorola gave us the option because everyone has their own preference between accurate and sexy and this way we can all be happy.
This is true, I will agree with you there
I prefer more accurate color reproduction within the limits of the display technology. My eyes hurt when dealing with high contrast screens. But superficially, "vibrant" will seem better, just like how people will gravitate towards the TVs in a store with the higher contrast and brighter colors even if it's just a setting. Having had a couple TVs professionally calibrated in the past, I'm not into artificially adding more color than exists normally. Vibrant probably crushes blacks too.
Saturated just has more punch and seems more contrasty. I refer color accuracy. The blacks are probably blacker on normal mode, just the whites don't get as bright so the blacks lose their depth. Speaking from experience in general, and not having moto x in hand experience.
