TWRP / Unlock Question - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi All,
Lost all data on SD card on ONE-XL from accidental factory reset (wife did it).
Question - I don't want to root the phone (believe JBean 3.14 can't anyway)....all i want is to unlock bootloader and install TWRP so can mount SD as a drive and run PC recovery software.
Is this possible? Or is fact it can't be rooted also going to prevent installation of TWRP also?
Then, what is best method to install TWRP? I've found the Evita all-in-one tool but that mentions running the xfactor exploit which i believe is for root only?
Cheers for the help guys. New to this one the One-XL even though been rooting Desires, DHD's and Sensations for years.

What carrier? xfactor is only for att.
Use all in one to unlock boot loader then install twrp. Easy as pie.

It's a Telstra Australian version. Don't usually post noob questions like this here but things seem a bit more painful since the good old DHD days.
Thanks though. Will do and see how i go! Fingers crossed the unlock doesn't overwrite the SD partition so i can still get all my files back!

It shouldn't touch the SD. But if there is anything important or sentimental (like photos) you should back them up on your computer, just to be safe.

Back them up... I personally think rooting and unlocking is the way to go. Even if you don't want a fancy-smancy custom rom, you could install a near stock JB rom that's super smooth and fast, without any bloat and optimized. Try it and see man, the toolkit makes things very easy for first timers

[Q] a couple of rooting/unlocking questions

Hey everyone,
I'm kind of a noob when it comes to development for the HOX and HTC in general; I previously had a Galaxy S II and it was incredibly easy to root and flash custom roms. I just had a couple of questions regarding rooting for the HOX:
1. I'm currently on 1.85, and I know that means I can still root. However, the 2.20 update hasn't even popped up on my phone. Also, whenever I check for updates, it just returns to the previous screen, like there's no update available. Does this mean I can still root using the 1.85 one click exploit?
2. How "safe" is rooting/unlocking the bootloader on the HOX? I know unlocking the bootloader is not officially supported on the AT&T version, and that you have to get SuperCID in order to unlock it. With all this modification, is it pretty safe to root and unlock the HOX? I really don't have the money to spend on another phone if I somehow brick it lol.
Thanks!

The root exploit should still work and whenever you mess with the phone in this state their is always a chance of bricking even if it might be just a soft brick

Good to know, thanks! I thought it might still work but wasn't sure. I see... What would be an example of a soft brick? I've read that if a problem occurs, you can run an RUU to restore it to factory default. Also, I don't have much experience with ADB either lol. I've read Gunnyman's primer though.

Thought so, thanks h8rift! I saw your thread about the CM10 nightlies on the HOX, and was wondering if you can flash CM10 nightlies from TWRP, or only ClockworkMod? Because CWM isn't officially supported on the HOX right?

Haha thanks omario! I just wasn't sure if you could flash CM10 through TWRP, but glad to hear it's possible. I've already downloaded all the necessary files; might take the plunge tonight! I downloaded the 1.85 One-Click Root tool from DesignGears as well as the one click SuperCID/Bootloader Unlock from kennethpen. Are these the correct tools I should be using?

[Q] are these the current tools to root/unlock?

Got lucky ended up with a 1.85 firmware device from att refurbished yesterday. I just want to double check that I'm not missing anything.
So from stock I need to use the one click root below first, then after this use the supercid bl unlock method and I'm good? Then I'll be able to get twrp recovery on there and start flashing?
One click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
Supercid unlock bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672284
Is there any files or numbers I need to back up before doing anything?
Anything I need to avoid doing that would cause me to lose root permanently?
Use the manual root method, seems to work better for most, myself included.
Ya what he said. I tried to root my phone 4x using that method it did not work. Finally used another method I found on the web. Try this one. Www.onexroot.com. there you will find the tutorial of how to. Not the one click root method. But the other. Also tells u how to unlock bootloader. I had to open 2 windows for this. I also went to xda and take a look at this one " there both the same except you got the step by step video tutorial .

U have to do this step above in order to unlock your bootloader ...that's just the way at&t is...if you have telus or rogers then just unlock bootloadee via HTC dev. Do this and you will be good. Oh and a peace of advice don't do what I almost Did...DON'T FLASH AN INTERNATIONAL ROM!!!. just stay in the "At&t, rogers one xl, talar" or whatever its calld. You'll have a $700 paperweight

Thanks everyone, I'll use the suggested manual root, already saw some bad stories of people flashing international roms. I've got the att forum bookmarked so I won't accidentally flash an international rom.
I saw people talking about safely upgrading to 2.20 firmware to keep root, is there any reason to go to 2.20 if I plan on flashing cm10 or AOKP or is that just if I want the latest stock ROM with root?

[Q] Rogers HTC One X Loading Custom Roms

I'm thinking about romming an HTC One X for Rogers and I've tried looking up information about installing custom roms. I know I need to unlock the bootloader first and that TWRP is likely the easiest method in order to rom. But I've read some conflicting things. Does it matter which version of the software I have? There just seems to be multiple guides.
Would this guide work?
h t t p:// theunlockr.com/2012/06/05/how-to-install-twrp-2-1-recovery-on-att-and-rogers-htc-one-x/
I'm happy to do the research, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Thabnk, I did read through part of that but I don't see anything there for version 1.94?
You can root and unlock 1.94 then flash recovery and rom fine.
Rogers HTC One X can be unlocked through the HTCdev site. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install TWRP and flash any evita rom you want.

Any variant of the HOX can be bootloader unlocked via HTCDev except for the AT&T version. Firmware numbers for you will not matter in the slightest.

So I was able to unlock the bootloader. To install TWRP I installed GooManager and Installed "OpenRecoveryScript".
When I try to reboot the phone into recovery, nothing happens.
Is there a guide how to use TWRP. Most of the guides seem pretty basic, but I don't even know if I have it installed properly. I'm trying to install ViperX

hey! that's my guide! haha, glad to see my first real contribution be somewhat of a success.
As long as it's in the root directory (not in a folder) of the internal SDcard, you'll be fine. Also, make sure you make a backup of your stock ROM just in case you need to go back to it.
Another thing, copy down your APN settings (word by word) from your stock ROM. Not sure if Rogers is the same as Telus, but Telus needs two APNs to get LTE enabled. If you could PM those to me as well, I could add them to my guide as well. Thanks.
Ughhh. Tried to install ViperX 2.6.0 using TWRP however it didn't work. Says Checking Model ID then "assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")==

Anything else you can/would recommend before I proceed?

So if you would like toto back up your apps than yes u can use titanium but yes make a back up sounds like u already did of your stock rom ...download viper 2.00 put it on your SD where you'll remember. To find it ... Once in twrp hit wipe menu ...wipe system ..factory reset ...and wipe dalvic cache than go back to the home menu in twrp and click install and find viper and this is very important since you wiped system you'll see in viper menu flash stock kernel or install rom ...hit install rom and go from there if you don't you'll be stuck. At. HTC dev screen and have to get back into recovery

One last important thing in case u didn't know
If you're ever stuck in bootloop this will do the trick to get into bootloader and back to recovery
Turn on, hold power 10-15 seconds, until screen goes black, let off, press n hold volume down, press power just 2-3 seconds, let off power button but continue holding vol. Down
LoL wow, already done. Using the rom now.
Wow, that was easy. Not sure if I should have checked some of the options (like one to enable exchange mail, and another for better sound). But it was so easy I guess I can always just redo it.
Was starting to think rooting maybe wasn't worth it (last root I did was on the original Nexus). Just going through all the features on ViperX, I'm glad I did.

Think of full root like the access you have to your computer ..you have master access admin access ..well if you want jb rooting would help you achieve that much much faster so yes.. or you have to wait for att which takes forever...
For future firmware....if you unlock your bl or unroot(ruu) you will lose your data not sd data though but the advantage of rooting is we get leaks of firmware and build off those

Yes rooting is giving you acess to sytem while booted...after you root you go unlock the bootloader at htcs site... Than you flash a custom recovery than any Rom you like... What firmware are you on though... Go into about software it'll either be 1.73 or 1.85 or 2.20

My advice would be do a ton of reading and learning before trying any mods of any sort on the device. No offense, but its pretty clear that you aren't familiar with the basic terminology and concepts, much less have the proper understanding to perform any actual mods. So reading is your first priority. Doing the proper research up front will save you a lot of headaches down the road, and may even save you from bricking the device. A good place to start is my index thread, linked below. Then start digging through the various guides on root, bootloader unlock etc. Probably also a good idea to just browse through the threads in General and Q&A, especially ones by other beginners in your same situation.

Yes, they are different but related.
Root is just a change of permissions. Root refers to gaining "root access" or "superuser" access to the system files that are normally protected. The person with such access is known as the "root user", and the term originates from Linux (which Android fundamentally is). Basicaly, all Android devices can be rooted, although how difficult it is to obtain root varies by manufacturer and device.
Manufacturers may or may not in addition lock the bootloader, which prevents loading of unofficial mods to the firmware and other memory partitions.
For the One X, you need both an unlocked bootloader and root in order to install custom ROMs. And the process varies by carrier and firmware versions. Since you are on the 2.20 firmware, the process is temp root (X-factor exploit), change CID, unlock bootloader, then perm root.

Your phone is setup by default to save your contacts to the cloud on your Gmail account. But you can go into Settings to ensure this, and check on your computer (login to Gmail) to make sure your contact info is there.
Email received to your Gmail similarly exists on the cloud, and will not be lost. The awesome thing about Android, is after you flash a new ROM or buy a new device, your contacts and Gmail are automagically synched to the device when you first boot it up and login to your Gmail account.
Email received to other accounts will be lost (if not stored on your mail server), so if you still need them, you will have to explore backup options.
You can simply backup your pics to your computer.
If you want to save SMS messages, there are various apps on the Play Market. I use SMS Backup+, which backs up and restores SMS messages to Gmail.
Most of these things will be wiped every time you flash a new ROM, so its best you become familiar with what needs to be backed up, and how.

Already answered your question above. I think I added that part about the same time you posted.
I did some research and watched some videos and think i have it mostly figured out. Please tell me if what i have is right. this is for a htc one xl at&t version.
step 1: root the phone to allow access to change files
-using this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952038
Step 2: unlock boat loader
-using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672284
step 3: install recovery TWRP
- using goomanager
please tell me if that is right and if not please tell me what is wrong.
Just use the second link, the xfactor exploit. It works well and it was what I used. It will unlock bootloader, gain perm root and install twrp for you.

Make sure you read carefully and understand what you're getting yourself into, rooting voids your warranty and all that good stuff. Watch videos and do some reading first, that's my advice.

[Q] Can I root without unlocking the bootloader?

Hi everyone,
First I want to thank to this awesome community for all their enthuisasm and work.
I have a T-Mobile HTC one S with stock rom, with the latest update from T-mobile. I was wondering if there is a way to root my device without unlocking the bootloader(I know how to do it first by unlocking the bootloader, which is very easy thanks to the all-in-one kit.)
I have found a method which used to work before: One-click root, but I couldn't make it work on my device.(It used to work on htc one S devices according to some other users).
Thanks for any help.
Short answer, no.
The best thing you can do is S-OFFing, so you can restore your LOCKED status in bootloader.
Thanks for the answer. I am not worried about the LOCKED status in bootloader, I just don't want to clear my storage and then reinstall everything.
When you say no, do you mean that there is no such method right now, or that it is not possible anymore?
Because it seems that it was possible last year.
AFAIK (and as you read yourself) that method isn't working anymore...
On the other side unlocking the bootloader will factory reset your phone...
Maybe the best thing you can do is backup your apps with Titanium backup, Carbon or something like that.

Btw if your s off and run a RUU the bootloader status will be Unlocked bit with no tampered sign . It won't shoe locked . Just done this process about 2 hours ago .no glory as bootloader status unlocked
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I cannot ise titanium backup without root. But I will check what I can do with Carbon.

With s-off you can reset your lock status flag, so that it will show LOCKED again. There's a guide about this , google for it.
Try to use Carbon (now renamed to helium), it's a very powerful app.

I used Helium without root, backed up almost all of my apps+user settings. Highly recommended.
Quick question, to receive OTA's again if I restore a Nandroid I need to relock the bootloader, correct?

Nope, no relocking needed. You need to have a ROM that can receive the OTAs (like Zen ROM) and official recovery for the OTAs to install correctly.

Hey all.
I don't want to open another thread so, I'll just ask here for a bit of help.
I've unlocked the bootloader for a One S of a friend of mine, following the steps on the website (HTC dev). In the final window it says that everything is OK, the phone starts fine. The only issue is that some how I can't boot the phone in FASTBOOT moede (power button + Vol Down) to move on the rooting process. The phone just starts in normal mode, no mater what am I keeping pressed.
Can anybody tell me what should I do in order to be able to enter the fastboot mode?
Thank you.
