[Q] Can I root without unlocking the bootloader? - HTC One S

Hi everyone,
First I want to thank to this awesome community for all their enthuisasm and work.
I have a T-Mobile HTC one S with stock rom, with the latest update from T-mobile. I was wondering if there is a way to root my device without unlocking the bootloader(I know how to do it first by unlocking the bootloader, which is very easy thanks to the all-in-one kit.)
I have found a method which used to work before: One-click root, but I couldn't make it work on my device.(It used to work on htc one S devices according to some other users).
Thanks for any help.

Short answer, no.
The best thing you can do is S-OFFing, so you can restore your LOCKED status in bootloader.

Thanks for the answer. I am not worried about the LOCKED status in bootloader, I just don't want to clear my storage and then reinstall everything.
When you say no, do you mean that there is no such method right now, or that it is not possible anymore?
Because it seems that it was possible last year.

AFAIK (and as you read yourself) that method isn't working anymore...
On the other side unlocking the bootloader will factory reset your phone...
Maybe the best thing you can do is backup your apps with Titanium backup, Carbon or something like that.

Btw if your s off and run a RUU the bootloader status will be Unlocked bit with no tampered sign . It won't shoe locked . Just done this process about 2 hours ago .no glory as bootloader status unlocked

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I cannot ise titanium backup without root. But I will check what I can do with Carbon.

With s-off you can reset your lock status flag, so that it will show LOCKED again. There's a guide about this , google for it.
Try to use Carbon (now renamed to helium), it's a very powerful app.

I used Helium without root, backed up almost all of my apps+user settings. Highly recommended.
Quick question, to receive OTA's again if I restore a Nandroid I need to relock the bootloader, correct?

Nope, no relocking needed. You need to have a ROM that can receive the OTAs (like Zen ROM) and official recovery for the OTAs to install correctly.
Sent from my One S

Hey all.
I don't want to open another thread so, I'll just ask here for a bit of help.
I've unlocked the bootloader for a One S of a friend of mine, following the steps on the website (HTC dev). In the final window it says that everything is OK, the phone starts fine. The only issue is that some how I can't boot the phone in FASTBOOT moede (power button + Vol Down) to move on the rooting process. The phone just starts in normal mode, no mater what am I keeping pressed.
Can anybody tell me what should I do in order to be able to enter the fastboot mode?
Thank you.

Yes, you must go to htcdev.com and unlock the bootloader, afterwards flash CWM and install superuser. After all this, open up market and download Titanium Backup. You can remove the application/widget from there. Careful not to remove anything else without freezing/reading about it first.
Go to Themes & Apps section, there is a "Safe List" there (Deletable Stock-Applications) thread.

what cwm do i use... it gets stuck on parsing when im trying to install one.. i unlocked the bootloader like u said on htcdev.com
What do you mean by "stuck on parsing"? Does it fail? Is the progress bar stuck? Some sort of error message?
Use goldcard method.
Alex, may I ask why it's necessary to install CWM? I used doomlords tool and didn't have to change the bootloader. I was able to remove fb chat without a problem.

Easier, faster, friendlier
And nandroid backups. Actually it's a remainder since I had to S-OFF (as 4 months ago there was no unlocked bootloader) and CWM was our best tool (doomlord wasn't supporting ChaCha even if the device was S-OFF'ed).
There are also adb commands that can be used.
i still have s-on... Does it matter that its the american version of the chacha aka status.... I need to remove these at&t apps... Asap...

Ota rootkeeper ???

Has any one perhaps used this app
Essentially ist an app that allows you to back up and restore your root access therefore allowing you to take updates over the air and then afterwards allowing to restore your root. I saw a couple videos on you tube but they were all dated months ago I was wondering if any one had any comments or feedback based on there own experience using this tool cause in theory it sounds pretty awesome

is there any chance you could list the steps you did involving ota rootkeeper....i still have ics 4.0.4, stock rooted unlocked. didnt take the jb update cause i didnt want to lose everything....thanks
Both times I used it I was running CM10 stable and CWM touch 6.0.2.3. I then did a full wipe, restored my stock back up, downloaded voodoo and hit "protect root", and then accepted the OTA. It was that easy.
The first phone I carelessly forgot to re-unlock my bootloader using ez-unlock and when I rebooted I got the dreaded triangle. Learned my lesson with the second one. I remember something about having to answer some ?'s during the reboot process about keeping my custom recovery, but I don't remember exactly what they were. The answers were pretty obvious.
Also, I just tried ez unlock now and it says device status unknown. After the update I remember getting that msg too for some reason. I just locked the bootloader and then unlocked it for good measure, making sure to get the "your bootloader has been successfully unlocked“ msg.
Good luck and lmk how it turns out

So flash or return to stock rooted ics in my case download the app hit protect root and then it says temporary un root then go through the notions of the update and then after it reboots just double check that the boot loader is unlock wit ez unlock before attempting to flash custom roms correct???
Ps after you or I unlocked my boot loader it too says device status unknown so much like you I lock it and then unlock it to be sure

Sorry was to busy watching the Super bowl and didnt have acces to a computer on my last post. Hopefully this is a little easier to follow.
1) Return to stock rooted/unlocked ics (in my case it was the backup I made of my phone straight out of the box)
2) Download the app and when you run it, it should have all but one of the boxes checked (you'll see what I mean when you open the app). Click on "protect root" and the final box should now be checked (indicating that a protected su copy is available)
3) I did not select temp unroot as an option, so I cannot attest to what selecting this will do. Once I selected "protect root", I went and initiated the OTA download. I did this with two gsIII's following the above sequence and had zero problems (well, except for forgetting to re-unclock my bootloader).
4) After the phone has downloaded the update it will ask you if you want to allow CWM (or whatever your recovery is) to install the unsigned.zip - select YES and answer YES to keeping root.
5) Once the phone is done booting up go into ezunlock and re-unlock your bootloader before booting into recovery or rebooting the device.
I think most people will agree that this is kind of a waste of time as their are a number of debloated Stock JB ROMS on this forum that you can flash without having to go through all the hassle of doing all this. I chose to do it as more of a learning tool. This is my first Samsung device having owned and rooted/S-Off''ed two previous HTC devices. I am by no means an expert, but this community has been so helpful to me over the last few years, that I figured it's about time I started spreading the Aloha. Good Luck!

[Q] Verizon Update Lost Root

Hi All:
I was having some signal quality issues and Verizon had my apply the newest software update available. I was rooted, but after the update i lost root. It said the update failed, but it also says my phone is up to date. Now when I reboot the phone one of the screens says "Samsung Custom" with a a picture of an un-locked lock (i don't believe it showed that before).
1) Can i go through the process of rooting again without screwing up my phone? Do i need to do anything prior to rooting again if I can root again?
2) What does that screen on the reboot menu mean?
3) Should i bother to do Verizon software updates in the future?
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find a thread in my search. Thanks for your help!
This has been discussed to death, especially in the thread that YOU read to root your phone. You NEVER take an OTA update when rooted. You will most defiantly lose root with the possibility of locking your bootloader and never being able to root again or unlock the bootloader. Since you are this deep, you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. Sit tight and see what is figured out. 2. Odin to a pre-rooted image, restore your backup, and wait to see what the devs say about it.

Well I guess I forgot that little bit of valuable information. So does that reboot screen just mean my bootloader is locked? Also, my backup was deleted somehow during the update process. I tried to go into recovery and load my backup, but it is no longer available.
If you have an unlocked lock, I would thing that would mean unlocked, right? Do you still have your custom recovery?

I have ROM Manager, which i used to access CWM. But if i try to boot into recover from a power off state it says "System Software not authorized by VZW has be found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VZW store for help." At the top of that screen in red it says "Secure Fail: Kernel." So that leads me to believe I don't have a custom recovery anymore, correct?

Follow the steps here to root the new OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. The unlocked lock and custom when you boot up actually does mean that your bootloader has been relocked. Strange way to show it though. You could wait until mrRobinson updates his no wipe odin factory images but that might be a couple days. I always use that method instead.

Ok yeah I'll check that out if he updates this week. Do I need to do a factory reset or anything or just leave my phone as is for now?

You don't have to reset anything if you don't want to. You can flash the full wipe or no wipe version. Everybody has their own preferences, I like the no-wipe versions. I usually avoid taking the Verizon OTAs directly by disabling the software update service with Titanium Backup Pro since they screw up root and the bootloader. I wait until there is an ODIN flashable image of it. Others prefer to take the OTA and root using the guide above, or flash the odex or deodex versions in recovery like the ones here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177798.

[Q] Help returning to stock recovery

Hi Guys,
I know this may be frustrating for some of you, but as a complete beginner in using Android, I was wondering whether someone could help me out here. I have tried searching various forums, but my knowledge of androids is limited. I used the tutorial from Rootwiki to successfully unlock my bootloader, install TWRP recovery and root my phone
Does this mean I am not using a stock rom?
Now I sort of regret deciding to do this and would like to return to stock so that I can get any OTA updates without further tampering with my phone. Unfortunately while following the above tutorial, I only made a backup after TWRP was installed and not before, so I need help in going back please.
I can see that there are a few people in my position, so I'm sure others will benefit from this as well.
My software details are:
Android version - 4.2.2.
Software number - 1.33.206.1
HTC SDK API level - 5.41
Network - o2 uk
Can I use any stock recovery file or does it have to be specific to the above?
Can you please provide a step by step guide with a list of files that I will need to download?
or can I simply just factory reset my phone, and everything goes back to normal? I don't mind having to re install apps etc?
Thank you all very much
i have a HTC One mini 4.3 and i am in the exact same situation. i like to get stock recovery but those ive tried hasent been working.
If you didint flash a rom after you installed your recovery, the back up you made is then of stock os
Maybe if you take the ota, it will cancel out ur root and five you stock recovery back, i havent browsed these forums.. Try searching for a RUU and stock recovery, the phone is fairly new, so can take time for someone to put something together

Ok guys, I got the notification for the OTA update today, I have downloaded it but haven't installed it. From a different thread, I found a link for a stock recovery which is about 9.5mb from androidfile host (/?fid=23252070760975668)
can I just flash this recovery and proceed with the update? or will there be compatibility issues with the version I have above?
Thanks
Anyone?
I am getting desperate to the point that I might actually pay HTC to repair it for me

not yet, but MirageBlader has been quite helpful and has said the following in a private message to me, which I have yet to try:
"Very easy mate, open your ota and flash the stock recovery from the ota. You can only install it with stock Rom, stock boot and stock recovery. Your bootloader musst be locked and your phone unrooted. s-off is not needed if you already got the ota"

I'd be very interested to know the results of your attempt to go back to "stock".
Can I ask if you are doing this just to get the 4.3 update? Also, do you plan to root and customise your ROM after the update, or leave it stock?
Thanks, and good luck....

I haven't got round to trying this out yet, will update this thread once I do, just quite busy this month and can't afford to mess up my phone. Yep, just doing it for the update, I only rooted my phone in the first place to get rid of bloatware, which i realised is a lot more complicated than just rooting, and all the other benefits of rooting don't really appeal to me, or are too much hassle for a beginner such as myself.
Just need to figure out how to unroot and relock my bootloader before I can go ahead with this :s
Hey nelvinchi. You seem to be knowledgeable enough on the matter and have been looking for help with my device. I posted a separate thread yesterday. If you have time/think you can help, could you take a look? Would much appreciate it.

If you have SuperSU installed on your phone, the app has a settings option called "Full unroot" - this will get rid of root. Relocking your bootloader - there are various methods, you could try HTCDEV site (probably how you unlocked originally), or the revone option which will lock the bootloader and remove the "tampered" label. Try a search, but if you are unsure, jusk ask!

Got everything sorted with the great help of Nelvin. I had previously gone to the twrp support IRC and after answering a few questions, they just stopped talking... Glad there are people out there still willing to help! He spent a good hour or so with me making sure everything was working.

Thanks for your reply nelvinchi, can I just confirm whether the SuperSU app you're talking about it the one by Chainfire in the marketplace? And is it just a matter of installing this from the marketplace to unroot my device, or is it a bit more complicated than that?
I'll do some research on relocking my bootloader with revone.
Also do you reckon the above method of getting the stock recovery from my update file will work?

If you are rooted then you more than likely have supersu already installed. Check your app drawer.I rooted using HTC DEV and supersu was flashed to the phone with twrp as part of the process

Can I make a suggestion? Given where you are with your phone currently, It would be much simpler, and virtually risk free, to flash tr1gg3r's Stock Sense 5.5 4.3 rooted deodexed rom from the One Mini Android Development forum.
You will get the 4.3 update, and have a fast and very stable ROM. All future updates will be incorporated into a newer ROM version.
Returning to "stock" carries FAR more risk - and you'll never have true stock because it isn't possible. Soon as the bootloader is unlocked, your phone is tampered, and no tool or utility can change that (other than cosmetically!)
It's your choice obviously, but if I was you, I'd stay rooted and enjoy the benefits it brings!

If you were rooted before, you don't need to re-unlock your bootloader as its already unlocked.
Just go into recovery and flash SuperSU.
Stop using toolkits. Its pretty obvious that you aren't aware of what you're doing and you're just pressing buttons hoping stuff will work.

If you were already previously rooted, your phone doesn't magically relock its bootloader. The only way for that to happen is if you manually relocked the bootloader which is bad practice if you're relocking your bootloader when its already unlocked. It serves no purpose to relock your bootloader if you did relock it, just leave it unlocked.
You don't have to go through the whole rooting process if your bootloader was already unlocked. All you had to do was flash SuperSU in recovery to reobtain root.
And don't use toolkits, you honestly don't learn anything at all but to click a button and hope it works. Because there is a chance that it will not work and then consequences will be set in place and then you'll have to rely on users who manually input commands on their phone via fastboot because you're not sure how to do it.
