[Q] any way to wake up without pressing power button? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
is there any way to wake up this tablet without having to press the power button? plan to put this in my car dock and the way my dock is now the power button will be covered up and there's no way I can get to it if it's in the dock. I've seen apps that wakes your device shaking it but that might be hard if it's in the dock, also I've seen 'slide2Wake' kernels but they are mostly for HTC phones and just saw an app like that for the Nexus 4;
anyway, please let me know if you know of a way.
thanks in advance.

Using power button as Shutter button?

I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong section, or if someone already asked this, but is there a MOD to allow the power button to function as a shutter button for the camera on the Nexus S? I know there's one for the Nexus One. if anybody knows of one, please let me know through PM or email.
Thanks in advance.
I'm also curious about this. If anyone knows please post it here..
Thanks.

I'd like an app like this as well. I found it very awkward taking a picture using the touch screen. Seems pretty stupid to include a camera, and not a physical button for it.
Using the power button would be great, as you won't ever really want to turn off the screen with the camera on anyway.

I agree that it would great to have this as an option, but just as a counter-point: I regularly turn the screen off while using the camera app if I'm in a situation where I want to be able to quickly shoot a few pictures here and there while at a party or something similar.

Not sure if possible, but maybe it can be modified to only act as the shutter button while the camera app is running? I too use the power button regularly for turning off the screen. I am though annoyed having to press a button on the screen to take a pic. Probably the only issue I have with my NS at the moment

im sure this is possible. it was done on the i9k galaxy s model. the question is just when someone will
Hmmm, I wonder if Tasker could do this.
Edit:
It's easy enough to create a profile that does something if the power button is pressed when and only when the camera app is active, but I can't prevent the screen from turning off.
Wouldn't the volume up or down button be a better choice?

Not with Tasker. Tasker can't detect the volume buttons directly.

But it can be done indirectly.

That's a good point. I never thought of that. I mentioned the power button because it seems more convenient. But I like the idea of the volume button better. )

Hey, thanks for this! I didn't know it existed. I will install it and give it a shot. Will report on results later.

as far as i know there is no dedicated camera buttons like the XT720
but you could try those buttons REMAPing apps that was made for the Galaxy S phones
those should do the trick
I've not tried it personally yet, but i was also getting annoyed about not having a dedicated camera button

Tasker is awesome. The learning curve can be a bit steep, but it's definitely worth the effort. And the price.
With CameraPro app you can make Volume keys to act as a camera shutter very easily. Do it and let me know. If you get what you asked for then don't forget to press the THANKS button. All the best!

Tap to wake - aka PGM - KnockOn

Lets Get this Note 3 party started!
The LG G2 has the knock on feature by stock default, called "KnockOn" since it has its only buttons on the back.
I currently run an app called PGM along with Fancy Kernel on my Galaxy Nexus this provides the same functionality.
Phone on desk in sleep mode, screen off. TAP TAP! on the screen and she wakes up.
Hoping we see this implemented on the Note 3 as its a feature that everyone loves and uses all day long.
Does your Galaxy Nexus suffer battery loss because of using that feature?
Sounds cool, I wouldn't mind that feature does it require root?

It will very likely drains the battery a bit

I have installed it in my brothers nexus 4...app is called touch control
Battery drain is very minimal
Needs root and custom kernel

The Note 2 and 3 has a home button that will wake the screen, so I see no need for me to use a knock-on feature..
I have it right now on the Note 2 using a different kernel and trickster mod app. Only issue is that if your pants have a thin inner liner your leg will turn on the phone. Same thing happened when I first did it on the Verizon Nexus. So it's not phone specific.
I'm sure that issue can be rectified with some enhancmenets for example :
- While Offscreen, reduce screen sensitivity
- If Offscreen AND touchwake event occurs, check light and proximity sensor, if both are dark and proximity==1 DO_NOT_WAKE_SCEEN
- Etc.
As for the dude who said the home button wakes the screen, that might be true,
but When you handle the Note with one hand, it is very uncomfortable to click the home button, skipping it would be awesome.
There was no appreciable drain on the galaxy nexus.
sounds interesting going to give this a try. As so for why we need it when we have a physical button? Because of its size. You don't have to reach all the way to the bottom to press the home button.

in the note 2, what kernel?
thx
I would like to have it in my Note 3 that has sview cover. I like to knock the s window to open. I don't like to touch the hard keys all the time.

I really hope Samsung implements this natively.
was hoping someone on XDA would come up with an app or something
(do I really need to flash a new Kernel for this? :/)
This would be cool, it would also extend the life of the hard keys.

is there anywhere we can put forth suggestions to Samsung? haha
I really don't understand why aren't the companies making more use of gestures on the phone...
double tap at the top of the screen to scroll to the top
double tap at the bottom to scroll to the bottom
etc
Yeah if its in a custom rom or kernel then it must be good
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
But isn't clicking the home button (1 click) more efficient than knock on (two clicks)? From what I've read about knock on on the LG g2, it's not awfully reliable as well.

Nice answer, something serious now?
I'm not saying to turn on the screen by pressing plastic, just by pressing the bottom part of the screen instead of the power button.
i read somewhere about double tap to wake
but i think it was in 4.3
This works for my droid razr when I tap near the earpiece/logo but it doesn't work for my note 10.1. Maybe I'm tapping the wrong place. Try it out.

An App alone wouldn't be able to do this- you'd need a kernel change, too. The kernels as shipped don't allow the touchscreen to be used as a wakeup source out of deep sleep, and the only way to fake that to happen means polling- and that means you'd kill your battery in short order.
I have found a solution for this, as the tablets don't usually come with a Proximity sensor, i have found apps that use the light sensor to wake the tablet:Automaton is one. Still a little bit glitchy or maybe i just did not have time to go through all the settings, but it does the job.

Please report back after you've used this for a while- I'll bet it kills battery life ...!
Is there a kernel that supports "wake with volume button"?

Save your home button. Not needed for booting to recovery

Just letting people know that the HOME button is NOT needed for booting into download mode or recovery.
I see so many people saying Volume+Home+Power boots to Download or recovery but it's not true for the S4.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE HOME BUTTON AT ALL.
Just hold Volume up+Power for recovery and Volume down+Power for download mode.
It only works for i9505 I think, it appears i9500 still needs HOME button pressed.
If you anything like me and boot into recovery multiple times a day this will save your home button. We all know that Galaxy S4 home button is weak and can break easily so give it a rest
Just giving this a friendly bump.
I feel that people should know this as even Recognised Devs are saying in their ROM installation instructions to hold Home button. Also many many tutorials here on XDA are saying the same.
It's pointless to use home button. It does nothing!

Who are all these people are are saying this? I've never heard about pressing the home button before I saw this thread. I've never seen any developers suggest it either.

Anyone facing issues trying to get into Recovery console after 4.3 update, the recovery goes away pretty quick, home button pressed or not, also on rebooting after trying to access the Recovery, getting a Knox security error

Had tried on GT-I9500, it does not work. Maybe GT-I9505 works.
Was already doubting about it. Saw some people describe to use the home button, and some didn't. But to be honest, does it really matter? It doesn't harm to do it anyway.
Anyway, thanks for the clarification
Download quick boot, is easier than buttons.
