Binding double tap to Google Now? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey, so in my opinion Google Now is waaay better than S Voice... and I have actually removed S Voice all together from my device.
I am looking for a way to bind my double tap to Google Now without using a launcher.
I was using home2 for it and it worked like a charm... but, I want to use Apex Launcher and that conflicts with it.
So, is there any other work around for this?

i do it with nova.
i know that doesnt help you, but maybe nova wont conflict.

Does Nova let you bind the home key to double tap for google now?
If thats the case I might switch to Nova... I just hear it drains battery life rapidly compared to Apex.

oh you mean with the home button, sorry. I thought you meant doubletap on the screen. i dont think nova can do that. ill report back if i can fnd that setting.

In apex settings behavior bind home key to Google search. I have show primary screen and this and it works great

I'm using Apex and I have GN set on double tap of the home screen. Works great

This. Home button to get to primary screen, then home button again for Google Now.

I use "pie" so I can launch it from anywhere. In or out of apps, anywhere.

Nova does let you set the home button to activate google now (single click though on the home screen only). Home button still takes you to the home screen when you are not on it. So if you are off the home page two clicks starts google now.

I use home 2 with apex and it works flawlessly. What exactly is the problem you encounter?

Home screen redraw

Almost every time I hit the home button from within an app and it goes to my home screen. It has to completely redraw the touchwiz interface. I'm running 100% stock firmware.
I was curious if anyone else was experiencing this problem. I find it very annoying and i feel that since this phone has 2GB of ram it shouldn't be having a problem keeping the home screen loaded while in another app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm confused on what exactly your asking. If course if you hit the home button it's going to go to your home screen. If you're talking about your recent apps, hold the home button then you have plenty of apps to choose from.

Op. For s voice, do you have it set to activate with a double tap of the home key? If you do then that is y get the redraw. S voice is waiting for a second tap to see if it need to activate or just go home. Turn that feature off and it will be snappier
Edit. OK. I see what u mean. Do u have forced 2d hardware acceleration enabled in the development setting?

Yes I do, i thought that may be the culprit but i wanted to see input from elsewhere. Should I disable that?

Yes. At the least the 2d thing. The home key to go back to the home screen is a personal preference. I use s voice alot so I like to be able to access it right away

I know what he is talking about. It is the amount of time it takes to get to the home screen when you are in a app. It does take a sec to long to get to the home screen.

I know exactly what you're talking about OP, I have the same issue for a while now, and coincidentally I did some research on this just yesterday and found a couple solutions you might be interested in trying:
Solution #1
Solution #2
Solution #3
Solution #4
I skimmed through the solutions and i didn't see the one i believed i helped a friend with. He has the same issue and he had power saving turned on. Once he disabled it, i want to say it was resolved along with other issues. Try this and maybe activate it again and try running one off at a time to see what one it is. Its been a few weeks at least since i talked with the person. Not sure if you have it on or off.
If none of these other solutions work...are you really tied to using the touchwiz launcher? I know launchers like nova and apex give you the option to force the launcher to remain in memory to prevent excessive redraws.
Personally, changing the double tap S memo option made everything a little faster for me.

[Q] How can I turn off Google Now being always on when swiping to the right?

After unlocking my phone, I get to my home screen with all my folders etc. As soon as I swipe to the right, I get Google Now!
It's as if it's an always on widget. On my N4, I would invoke Google Now by holding the Home key and swiping upwards (which I can also do with my N5).
Is this something that can be switched off or is this an integrated function of the system?
I'm not looking to switch off Google Now before anybody asks.

As far as I can see the only option would be to either A) Uninstall Google Now, or B) Install a different Home Launcher ... Neither are suitable resolutions to your question. I personally like having it as a home screen since I turned off my softkeys in Lieu of LMS
The only thing I can think of is switch launchers to nova or something similar. You would lose the "OK Google" function from the launcher though., so not a good solution if you use that function. As far as I know there is now way to remove it from the stock launcher.

Thanks guys.
I don't mind having it but just wasn't sure if it was a feature that can be turned off without completely disabling Google Now.
Battery life is quite impressive on this thing even with it always on!

It does not disable Google now entirely just the extra screen, maybe you should try it before you respond with useless replies.

This page is the same page as if you went into settings from Google Now Directly. This will turn it off.

that my magazine thing is dumb....its basically a flipboard widget....i disabled it and turned it off
Agree with the above poster. I got annoyed with it, so I disabled it and have flipboard running instead. You can use it's widget to perform much the same way if you want to, but I'd rather not waste a home screen
By the way, to disable it, long press on an empty area of a home screen, hit home screen settings and you can disable it in there.

I did end of disabling it but I am still wondering why it would not load any of the sections. They all just say, "content will be available later" so can anyone help with my issue?
Edit: weirdest thing, it started working today.

OK Google

Is there a way to get ok google to work on the edge?
Sent from my Samsung Note Edge using Tapatalk
It works just fine on my t-mobile edge. Just scroll to whatever home screen your Google search bar is on and say, Okay Google.
I was playing with the settings the other day to try to save battery power. I must have shut something off, because it doesn't work on mine.
Sent from my Samsung Note Edge using Tapatalk
Ok ran google setup and now it works. But it just made the search bar useless. Didn't like the looks of it anyway.
Sent from my Samsung Note Edge using Tapatalk
Have you tried this?
Settings -->language and input --> turn on voice search --> turn on, "ok Google" detection --> record your own, "ok Google "
When done, try it and works even when screens off....
That is a different way of getting there, but that is how I got it to work again. (You can also get there by using google setup in the app drawer) of course the OK Google is gone from the widget, but I guess it's better this way.

If you are using Nova launcher, it has the capability to work from any screen of the launcher. (homescreen/alt screens/dashboard)
Been using Nova for a few years and they've done a great job integrating things like this, while adding a little extra capabilities.
If you follow the directions in google setup, you can access OK Google from any screen and also if the lock screen is on if you choose to do so.

I know this but tons of other dont.
No one ever cares to read the manual.
Plus alot of stuff is disable by the carrier if they let them setup the phone.
That's why I always setup my own phone and then later go through all the settings.
I had my Note 3 able to send text messages by voice while the screen was off. And it's nice to be able to tell it to play a song while it's in your pocket.
Voice controls are cool to me. Just suck that's it's always listening so if you say something similar it will wake up.
Someone please help me out here. S voice is giving me some serious pain in the ass right now.
I want to disable S voice completely and only use Google Now but that seems to be impossible.
The Issue:
I can only OK Google from my home page where the Google search widget is. On my G3 I could OK Google from any app any screen and even lockscreen without a hiccup.
S Voice is causing issues pretty much everywhere I want OK Google
What I've tried:
Tried freezing S Voice in which case I lost the ability to OK Google from Anywhere and the lockscreen.
So tried using the S switcher app which was very buggy and had to simply uninstall it...
What I want:
Just plain OK Google and nothing else. All I want to be able to do is OK google from any screen and any app like I did so many times before on all other devices I've owned.
Ideally I would want to be able to activate it from lock screen too but that's not a priority.
Can anyone help me out here.
My friends S4 can do this all seamlessly too but the Edge seems to bug out everywhere because of S Voice
If you go to your Google settings in the app drawer, you'll find the options for ok Google to activate from any screen. I have a t-mobile Edge.
Google Settings->Search and Now
If you're rooted you can install xposed and install the ok Google module which works for any launcher

I can use OK Google from any screen and it's still available from the widget. I am using the stock launcher & have an AT&T Edge. My friend has a T-Mobile Edge and he couldn't get OK Google to work from any screen other than the home screen, even though his OK Google detection settings are the same as mine. He gave up and started using Nova launcher lol.. could be that some devices have an issue with this.

This pretty much sums it up. Like I have said I'm no noob when it comes to using Google Now and know every detail of it's settings. Yes, all my settings are set to activate from any screen yet it fails to activate.
The issue is if I freeze or uninstall S Voice I am no longer able to check mark the Activate from any screen box and if I have S Voice activated it just seems to cause issues with ok google and just a clumsy software overall.
I was just wondering if anyone had a workaround.
You have to freeze S-Voice, then clear data for the Google Search app and then set Google up again. Trust me.

You do have to freeze S voice. Then while in application manager go to Google search and clear data. Then get out of settings because you are correct the option to activate from any screen is gone. Now go to your app drawer and choose Google settings. Click on Search & Now. Click on Voice and set it up from there. The option is available in these settings.

YES! you da best. Now for the sake of it could I do the exact reverse to only use S Voice if I ever feel like using it exclusively?

Well I'm no expert but I don't see why it wouldn't work the same for S voice.
The issue I'm having is Google now won't work when connected to bluetooth. I have mine connected to my Gear S and when I say ok Google the bar stays frozen instead of jumping around showing you it's listening. Soon as I disconnect my watch it works fine. It's annoying!

Nova Launcher

If I press on the home screen for longer than a second a screen comes up that lets me change my wallpaper/widgets/settings. Does anyone know if I can remove that shortcut? Haven't been able to find a way through settings or nova settings.
Thanks!
I should clarify, long press the display while on the home screen

I'm sure there has to be a way to do it after root however I've never heard of anyone rooted or not wanting to do it. What do gain by removing it and I've used nova for a long time but don't remember seeing an option to remove.
