Keyboard issues - Asus Transformer TF700

Hello,
I've had my tf700 for a couple of weeks now. Things started off pretty well with it, but now it's starting to give lots of keyboard problems.
Sometimes it goes nuts typing a string of letters like a key is held down, sometimes the last key i pressed, sometimes random.
Sometimes on wakeup, the keyboard won't work, but the trackpad does.
Sometimes nothing works, but the notification area shows docked.
Sometimes when these issues are happening, i can't open the notification menu. Touching it does nothing.
Sometimes a cold boot fixes the problem, not always.
Any ideas? Is it commonly this flakey? One of these issues has been happening at least daily for about a week. It's stock, no root, all updates. It came from Best Buy, so I can return within 30 days. Should I return it for a replacement? Different model?
Thanks for any insight.

l have never heard of anyone having THOSE problems!
Did you do the cold boot with the dock attached?
If that does not sort if out, I would return it. Maybe you have better luck with the next one...

I have done cold boot with and without the dock attached, doesn't seem to make a difference. I discovered tonight that when the notification thing is not working, it will start working when the tab recieves a msg or something. This also started the keyboard working tonight after multiple cold boots did nothing.

That's an issue that came with Jelly Bean. There's a lot of threads on it.
The other issues I haven't heard of yet. The Best Buy part isn't a shock, 90% of the faulty TF700's mentioned on this board came from Best Buy.....

Thanks for the tips. I just picked up a new one. Hopefully it works out better.

No that I care about BestBuy one way or the other, but don't you think the reason may be that a lot of tablets were bought at Best Buy period? Faulty or not? They are one of the few brick and mortar places left if you don't want to buy online.
I have a hard time imagining that Asus produces sub-standard tablets especially for Best Buy. And I think BB would scream bloody murder if their return rates were considerably higher than "normal" for any particular product.

Fact remains that not a single EU user has complained about the issues BB buyers do. Assume from that what you will, but in Europe they do sell them in stores, and in some countries well before the US sell date. So no, it's not the tablet itself.
I suspect BB got a lousy batch, and BB just assumes it's the product's default state. People keep getting they product swapped for another from the same batch which is not going to do any good.

Unexpected reboots

So it seems I'm getting more and more of these nowadays. At first I thought it might be Battery HD, which I removed, as I didn't remember installing anything else lately which might be running, but today at the very moment I removed the tablet from the dock, it just rebooted (almost) instantly. Wonder if more of you experience this.
I was getting these on the stock launcher yesterday and I'm getting it today while on Nova.
I would really love this unlocking tool right now..
i got mines on thursday and have not had one reboot.

Strange...mine hasn't rebooted once. Check through your tweaks you did, some of those might be causing an issue

see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789618 and other similar posts here
After reading your posts...your OBVIOUSLY doing much more to your unit than the average user. Especially since it just started happening to you after you did all these tweaks.
The glowball thread is irrevelant....just because someone is havingan issue with an APP...now all of a sudden its a disease and your unit caught it.....
Comical..
If you expect the unexpected, is there truly a thing as an unexpected reboot?
Well, certainly wasn't expecting it to constantly reboot on undocking, so I guess the pun doesn't work in this case.

Pun? That was no pun. You weren't expecting the unexpected so you were surprised.
I was expecting not to have them... let's just... EOT. I don't see a point in analysing my expectations further, as this was not the issue in the first place. You may call them "sudden" if this helps you settle things in your mind.

I am not a power user by any means, and I can confirm that the machine rebooted a couple of times while watching 720p videos.
Is there a CPU usage/temperature log somewhere on android? That could help track down the origin of these nasty reboots and file complaints to ASUS.
Early Infinity adopters unite!
You can find numerous apps for CPU monitoring in the playstore, but I haven't found one for monitoring CPU temperature (only battery temperature)

I've had at least 2-3 random reboots in the last 4 days. Once it happened while loading up the Facebook app. Another time it happened while browsing the web with the stock browser. Both times the screen when white and had a thin black line down the side, then after 15s the boot screen appeared with the Asus logo.
So far most everything has been working and I've been happy with the Infinity. But having a number of random reboots in a single week and not being able to get an uptime over 2 days is a fairly major problem for me. Note that it is not rooted or tweaked in any way.

I've never seen so much butt jokes from one person in so short a time. I used to be the champion, but we found the new one.
I wasn't really angry, by the way, but just posting crap like that without anything to add to the discussion (and multiple threads: "maximum butt pain" -- meh), well, that's hardly to be called constructive participation, is it?

Ohh great......now their "BUTT BUDDIES"

Will Asus fix the lag and crashes on TF700T

Im now on 5th day with my TF700T.
So far it have been mixed feelings about it.
I love the keyboard, dont think i can have a tab without a keyboard in the future.
There is also no other tablet out there that have what I want.
The thing that worries me a bit is the lag on the device. Sometimes I must wait several seconds before it responds. And this is not the touch screen, becouse when I just wait, it will do what i wanted. This is not fun when you are sufring a simple webpage.
Will Asus fix this lag in the Jelly Bean 4.1 update?
How about people that have rooted (custom rom) their devices, do they have the same issues?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
ummm, i dont think anyone on here can answer that question. JB is a google OS update.
Try resetting
Then check the firmware version.
The only delays I see after tapping are when web browsing.
Everything else is snappy as far as snappy can be under Android.
Are you running in the balanced mode?
First thing I did was root mine and freeze all of the useless crap they preinstall. Havent ever had any lag issues.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Have had the tablet just less then a week. I very surprised at just how poor the performance is on this. Here are some of the issues I'm having:
-If I leave the web browser app for other apps and then come back to it, my web pages reload. It's like the multitasking fail that is present on the HTC EVO 4G LTE or HTC One series only not as pronounced.
-Some Flash heavy websites are so choppy and laggy. Scrolling is very choppy.
-The Netflix app is almost unusable. Scrolling through my queue seems like it's getting about 5 frames per second. Oddly enough, actually watching movies plays perfectly if I can manage to scroll to select the right movie
-Some games, even ones that are promoted through the Tegra Zone are very laggy.
I really want to love this tab. It's so great for me in so many other ways but I can't live with it if this is what I can expect
I'm rooted, not unlocked, stock ROM. I've been running in performance mode. I've tried with and without Nova Launcer. I've removed or frozen everything I dare to using TB. I've looked through this and other forums for tips on improving performance but so far nothing has helped. Do I have a lemon? Are these problems common? Is this what this tab is? Please help, really want to get this thing running like I'm pretty sure it can.
im going to go ahead and assume that asus had a bad batch of tf700t's go out. i had one with the same problem and i returned it, got a new and havent experienced the same problem again. so fast and snappy that jellybean will just make this tablet crazy.
Because of some problems i have with my pad i have decided to factory reset it a week ago.
Since than the experience is sooo much better. Didn't solve my problem though

Not sure what to tell you...
I don't have any really bad slowness.
Kind of sounds like a bad processor or gpu core or other hardware bug like maybe ram errors.
IMO wouldn't say these are common problems.

No problems here, either. I haven't rooted or done anything to mine except install updates and some apps I like - nothing that alters it really. Super happy with mine. Sorry you're having problems, but maybe you should exchange it, as previously suggested.

C6. From Amazon maybe 4 days ago. Is that older or more known to have issues. I'm still well within my return period from Amazon. If C7 is known to be better it would be worth it to me to return it and buy it from a store where I can look at the serial number on the box first. Thanks for the replies... Didn't mean to hijack the thread but it seems the op and I are having the same issue.

The tablet serial number can be found on the box the tablet came in and on the bottom of the tablet itself on a sticker (on the part of the tablet that would go into the dock if you use one).
The only difference between a C6 serial number and a C7 serial number is that one was manufactured in June and one in July (the number after the C is the month it was manufactured in)....

Maybe we should start a new thread and track the serial #s and their defects. Good way to compare range of serials with defects and spot unfixed junk that might be sold as refurbished later
For my limited use, the lag and freezing was driving me nuts. Of course, I've been down this road before with the Prime. Eventually the Prime community found the tweaks and mods to make it fly, and I admit it was part of the fun to experiment and find ways to squeeze more performance and stability from the tablet.
My problems with the Infinity seem to exacerbate when RAM goes below 200k. I can see this from the Cool Tool widget. When I get below this level, the browser is generally unusable. I use a tool called startup cleaner to minimize what launches and tried to keep widgets to a minimum but my RAM seemed to always run low. Based on this same experience with the Prime, I changed the setting in developer options to limit background processes to 2. This does a good job keeping RAM above 400K, and when I do this it runs very well. No lag or ANRs, and everything seems very fluid.
This was an early temp fix with the Prime until other mods caught up, so I don't expect this to be required long term. However, the results are really are dramatic so far and enough to keep me from going the Note 10.1 route.

That's a good tweak, and one I hadn't tried before, so thanks!
If you're unlocked, I would advise you to run...don't walk, and flash TWRP recovery and then the Zeus rom v 4.0. This is a totally different machine on that rom.
There is also the trick of turning off animations in Developer Options or set the scale to .5. That helps with smoothness, too.
My advice is not to exchange over simple lagginess if all other hardware issue are ok. There is so much more that can and will be done on the software side, but if you exchange, what if you get a tab with a major hw problem?

Asus has improved the quality of TF700?

I know that many people are happy with the TF700 tablet. But I can not ignore that there is a certain percentage of people who received defective tablets.
I want to know if Asus, with the number of returns that will surely have received, taking a responsible attitude, reacted quickly and made changes to the tablet. My question specifically is:
Can anyone confirm if the most recently produced TF700 Asus come with fewer problems than the initials?
Personally, I don't think that enough time has passed for Asus to make any sort of manufacturing changes in order to fix any of the physical defects that some are seeing... I'm sure it takes time to change the manufacturing process and go through existing stock, etc - the device has only been out for what 75 days or so? I highly doubt that the physical design has changed at all yet (if they ever change it at all)...

I was unaware that the Prime's problems were addressed. I went through several of them through the RMA process and even have seen purchases much later on and the same problems were still present. If you got lucky and happen to get a "good" one then you were very lucky. People still with Prime's, is Asus physically making changes to the tablet?

Only good part about the prime was exchanging it for my infinity. Honestly if it was manufactured correctly and the bt/wifi issue didn't exist it would have been a terrific tab. Asus is quick w updates, generally uses good hardware, and the Tegra3 is fast and really good on power IMHO. My infinity is as good on power on "balanced", (performance drains quick), as my Prime was.

I just returned a TF Infinity earlier this week that I bought last month. The tablet had horrible screen lift everywhere except for the corners. Even with the world focusing their sights on Asus and the Nexus 7 Asus still hasn't been able to fix the screen lift issues so I can't imagine the Infinity having it's issues fixed first.

Yeah Asus addressed the Primes issues.....by releasing the Infinity and discontinuing the Prime. Prime owners still had the last laugh though by being able to return for a full refund.

[Q] On 2nd RMA from screen blobs, should I keep bothering AT&T/Samsung?

So, I RMAed my Skyrocket due to the dreaded AMOLED blobs that Samsung can't seem to get rid of. Mine were somewhat OK when I originally got the phone, but 7mos later they're quite noticeable in some spots. In addition, the screen has that vertical "brushed metal" look to it that's also a pain in the ass.
I got my RMA on Monday, and it had the same damn problem. To top it off, it had a horizontal line on it. However, it didn't have the "brushed metal" effect as bad as my original. Instead, it had what looked like little dust clouds on it.
Naturally, I was pissed. I called AT&T once more, got another RMA (priority shipping included for free!), and got it this morning. Now, it has more spots, a faint brushed metal effect, but no giant blobs or dust clouds. On a more interesting note, the DSLR picked this up as being amber and not green.
So, should I try rolling the RMA dice again, or just going with #3?
EDIT: Got replacement #3 today. It has the same problem, and it's worse than the others! I'm beginning to wonder if this is all pointless.
EDIT 2: Replacement #4 arrived. Same crap, different phone. Not only that, I learned that I have essentially maxed out my AT&T warranty after 4 RMAs. Gotta love that. Going to try Samsung in the morning.
EDIT 3: Replacement #5 has been sitting on my desk for 15 days and I just bothered looking at it. Same problem, getting it DOAed again.
I'm not even bothering with uploading a photo.
EDIT 4: Finally had time for Replacement #6. It doesn't look TOO bad, so I'm thinking that I'll probably go with it. Thoughts, anyone?
Seriously, has anyone gotten better results with these phones?
Keep trying I promise you won't get a perfect one but you can get one a wee better

Currently on the phone with AT&T setting up RMA 3. Apparently I've reached the limit on open RMAs, so the CSR is seeing what she can do about it.
LOL.
Got the 3rd replacement today. Lo and behold, it has the same problem! To top it off, it's worse than replacement 2! Calling AT&T again to get another.
It's an ongoing issue with the display. Remember the devices they are sending you are not new they are refurbished.
You can get a brand new SR and it will have blobs on it, just pick the best one and keep it.

The AMOLED screens have a defect, presumably due to the mass-production of the screens. They get darkened "blobs" at low ambient and backlight levels. They have a tendency to grow. Thus, I'm trying to find the best one I can.
In other news, I got replacement #4 today! It has the same problem. Not only that, 4 open RMAs seems to temporarily lock AT&T's warranty system, and now I have to interface directly with Samsung. Lovely.
God, I hate this kind of crap Samsung lets happen to their devices.
Just looked at Replacement #6. It seems to look OK, so I'll probably go with it.

I had to RMA 2 of them, the third one started randomly rebooting itself during calls. I got a hold of warranty replacement and explained to them that this was the third one, and I was not happy, of course they offered to send me a replacement S2 Skyrocket, and I told them NO, I wanted something else. They of course couldn't / wouldn't do it.
They sent me on to a different version of customer service and explained to them everything that happened and I told them that I would not accept another one due to the failure rate. They offered me a new phone, told me I couldn't have an iPhone or Note, but any of their other phones was acceptable. I asked for a garnet red GS III. 24 hours later I had a brand new GS III sitting on my desk. I have not had ANY issues with the S III.
OH and side note, they let me keep the GS II Skyrocket instead of sending it back in. I sent it in to Samsung and they sent me a brand new one back, and so far not a single issue with it either, however it just sits on the desk at home waiting to be used. I decided to keep it as a back up in case the S III had an issue.
Lol I always wondered what the **** those were!

Un-rooted TF700T on JB

I've been seeing a lot of complaints about sluggishness and lag on the Infinity. Am I the only one who satisfied with this tablet? I get a tiny bit of lag here and there, but not to the extent in which others have complained. My device is definitely not perfect but I love it. Sure, it has a little light bleed. Yes, the screen makes an almost inaudible clicking noise when touched in certain areas.
As far as software goes, I'm really not having any major issues. Everything runs smoothly, even with multiple background processes. I suppose the only issue I have with the software is how wallpapers are cropped. I disabled a lot of the bloatware and don't have my applications to upon boot. I don't really see the need for apps to run on startup.
I did end up having to fashion my own protective strip for the dock, though. I ruined the velvet strip on the front of the inside of where the tablet connects into the dock because I used a screen protector at first. It ended up pushing the strip and its glue downward.

No you ain''t the only one...
I figure why say anything if I don't have much to complain about.
* said this eons ago (which is days in forum time) "!f I keep looking and stop using this tablet !'ll always be mad at it"
I was thinking the other day, I might have to divorce myself from the general section of this forum. There is so much negativity around here, it almost makes me second guess myself. The minority of people with issues are very vocal and it's quite a downer. If somebody is unhappy with their purchase, they should just get something else.
I, too, have a lightning fast device. It was fast before I rooted it, and after I rooted and froze bloatware I'd say it might be faster than the ipad, though I've never played with one. Sure there is a bit of lag sometimes, but I attribute that to apps still not being developed for fhd screens, and will only get faster with time.
Positive owners unite!

Hell, it is almost a laptop with the dock.
I am very happy.
All we need now is some more decent apps to make this the best piece of portable hardware around.
I'm a little disappointed that Amazon's app isn't compatible. Other than Amazon, I don't really see many app conflicts. When I first got my Infinity, Draw Something and Words with Friends didn't work but that changed rather quickly. Draw Something is awesome on the Infinity.
File transfers seem to be decent on the Infinity too. Whether its tranfering PC to Infinity, Infinity to PC or just moving files around on the device itself, I have never had issues.
I think people need to understand that tablets are still very young, comparably.

I laugh every time I read posts like these. So you telling me its OK that you paid 544$ plus 149.99$ for the dock n still have the build quality that you have?.. damn I love android but I am not a fool. For this kind of money I am expecting to get the best of android because there is no other android device that has a fhd display and costs this much. I know were you coming, I felt the same way in the first month of me owning it. But now I am trying really hard to love my infinity and not unlock my tablet nor trade it in for another company or device.

Build quality and the OS are two different things. ASUS is not Android. I do agree that they need to step up QC but its hardly worth losing sleep over. You'll end up spending more time worrying about how it looks, rather than just taking a deep breath and enjoying it.
Also, there build quality of the dock is excellent. The protective strip came off on my own error.

I have amazon on my Infinity and it works just fine. I had a back up from titanium backup.
My Infinity is running smooth with no issues.
Look I've said this countless times before. You will see more negative posts then you will ever see positive ones. There is still a majority of people that are quite happy with the Infinity with JB. The negative posts you will see here are from a small group/minority. Don't get swayed or make you feel like your perfectly good device is inadequate. This device is a beast.

I suppose I will just transfer the .apk from my phone to Infinity. Play Store won't let me download it.

Agreed, I had a prime when it ran Honeycomb; when the ICS update came out there were endless complaint threads.
Look at it this way: Users who are happy with their device don't post many "positive" threads so all we see are the negative threads of a minority of users looking for support. (Ya I've got small quirks with this device occasionally, but I still absolutely love this thing
As for incompatible apps Titanium Backup works great for exporting said apps from my phone to tablet (of course, root is needed)

Amen.
I understand that there are some issues with the Infinity just like every other piece of technology.
I'd like to see posters actually search the forum before posting the same negative garbage over and over again in thread after thread.
Thanks. I feel better now.
