need official ICS ROM for Desire S - HTC Desire S

No ota, just ruu

Never officially released, only ever released as a developer ruu, it's buggy and lags a lot. Personally i wouldn't recommend it

flash ice cream saga. it's the closest to "official ICS", only no lags and bugs.

i agree
@cheekugr8:
man i know u want official ics but listen to me
i have tried it and it was laggy slow and really awful! and when i decide to change it i only have the chance to unlock my hboot via htc dev...but my big luck come to help me...i send my ds to the htc assistance for my broken power button and they change my motherboards so i unlock it via revolutionary...and if i have problem in the future i can relock all the phone and send again to htc...so...unlock it via revolutionary and simply choose a room with a real ics

Shouldn't be in the Dev forum - reported. Next time, please put QUESTIONS in the Q&A forum.

Thread Moved
Please do not post questions in the dev section

if official ROM is not stable, why HTC has released it ? BTW some mobile websites states that desire s is up gradable to ICS , if so why leaked ROM are required and why i m not able to upgrade it through my cell phone.
please guide.

Htc only released the ics rom because of pressure from devs like those on xda, it was never released to the general public. If it was it would have been done via ota not an ruu, it was intended to be a developers plaything.
"The box said 'Required Windows 95 or better'. So, I installed LINUX."

Ok thanx for the help. A little more guidance please, which ics Rom is best to install?

Ice cream saga is probably the closest to stock to try.

short answer = no
Yeah if you want updates you'll need a completely stock phone. but I'm sure we'll have it in the development section before HTC bring it out to everyone

no you wouldn't, you would have to either find a stock rom you can flash or you would need to flash a ruu which i will post both links for you the ruu would have to be your network carrier otherwise you wouldn't get the update OTA
the ruu http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506

For real, all you've gotta do is keep your ears peeled. As soon as boys start claiming to have the update, do a quick Google search & download either the RUU or find a "flashable" zip. Whoever relies on push service for updates these days anymore? If you did, you'd still be on some earlier distro of Unity.
Wow, you're still on Unity? The last time that ROM was updated was September!

Unity's really cool. Easy on the battery too. I moved to Endymion (and keep shuffling ICS & MIUI ROMs) for features & the latest Sense. I one could learn contentment, Unity would be the word. But alas, who's content with the world today?

Need advice before rooting a new Desire S :D

Hi all,
I am new to android and just* want to root my phone as many apps demand your phone to be rooted such as full backup apps, firewall apps and other similar apps.
I am still on HTC's stock 2.3.3 with HTC sense v.2.1 (though i have downloaded the OTA update for 2.3.5 but kinda confused over negative reviews of 2.3.5 update..so I am holding it here right now)
But when I saw a guide here though quite helpful but I was a bit confused as what I read on other articles on XDA + on other blogs that a thing called HBOOT is a bit tricky to tackle while following a particular rooting method; as there are many ways to root like using revolutionary..installing custom bootloaders etc (is it really neccessary? I just want to root my phone and don't plan to install any custom ROMs in near future.)
I am confused
- as to should I really let my warranty go off the table as its just a month old phone sacrificing it for just a few apps I want to use.
- Please tell me that, will I be able to search for and install the officially released OTA updates such as the 2.3.5 / ICS after I have done S-OFF + Rooted my phone??
If answer to both of the questions above is a "YES"
then plz tell me step by step of how to S-OFF and ROOT my phone (I found multiple ways to Root the phone and now I am confused and not really confident on which way/approach to follow)
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Sky770
If you want to root, do not download the OTA and install!!
You are in a great position, and you can easily root your hboot with the alpharevx.
Do it, you won't regret it.
Also, we can't give you step by step guides... Follow the index links.
Also, you can't install updates after rooted. But you won't need to. We will have the official ICS prerooted before.

saga pvt ship s-on RL
hboot-0.98.0002

So, should I be worried about the HBOOT ver. number? the 0.98 ? :|
You should be less worried that the hboot is 0.98....
No need of downgrading,
It's simple, just do revolutionary....
And you will have S-off

ok.. I really have no idea about what happens and what not happens if i do downgrade my HBOOT but I see many people here on XDA done that (downgraded their HBOOT) Can you shed some light on this topic?
Also, I would definitely want to try official 2.3.5 and/or the official ICS release (whenever they release one; around Q3/Q4 2012? ) so is there any* way to install these if I do revolutionary? I would def. like to find these updates via OTA (will my phone detect these from official HTC servers?)
PS: I am trying to stay as long as with official ROM as of now :| so no near future plans to flash my baby with a custom one
Just need the root
just a few more noob questions to follow
Thanks for reading and replying
You will not thank me for this, but for your sake I suggest reading instead of writing. All of the info you're asking for is written in the guides, and people that write the guides don't have enough patience to answer those that don't bother reading and ask the same questions over and over. Writing questions instead of reading FAQs and guides leaves you with less probability of having a good answer or having an answer at all, and clutters the already cluttered forum.

As you are on the old hboot, there is no need of downgrading, that's why I said, do not install the upgrade.
We have a ROM, by Proxuser, which is the rooted version of the OTA with no modifications and will work out pretty well.
Once rooted you will not be able to receive any OTA upgraded, but IMHO, hardly matters, you will get the same and better versions out here.
We already have the leak of ICS build for desire S, and it's pretty fast, forget q3
Also we have very functional sense 4 lite, which is faster than sense 3.6
So again, do the revolutionary, it's quite simple actually for you, and flash the saga 3D,, for a stock experience

Well the beauty of rooting is trying out custom ROMs... I don't think you should root if you don't intend too. You seriously won't regret it. Just take a NAND backup, you can always restore to it if you don't like the custom ROMs.
And as I have said before...
No, you can't get OTAs once rooted, but you can still install these maually, and you will be able to do it way before the update actually hits your phone 'officially'.
As we have said too, you are in a good position. No need to downgrade at all. Your hboot version is the right one.

Right.. When I acually was craving for a droid I was crazy as hell to root n try out new ROMs but... when I got an HTC I was simply hands down n thought not to touch this beauty. HTC Desire S is quite a package at this cheap price + hardware config.
PS: just a last ques. for now: which OS is the recommended one? I do have linux mint 10 32 bit edition installed on my machine; its a bit old.. rarely updated the packages n all AND I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition ..so which one would you recommend me to root with?
Thanks a lot guys.

Well i felt the same too. It's great out if the box, but you can achieve so much more when rooted.
Do it. Also, Windows 7 is easier.

No, that's not what forums are for. You should probably look at the name of the forum and think, what does "-developers" part stand for, and why isn't it called "XDA-users-in-doubt-that-are-too-lazy-to-bother-reading". Your "period" you can use elsewhere.
To your last question: Windows is what the guides are written for, so doing everything on Windows will be better - it won't require you to understand and "translate" everything to Linux.

@sky770... The guys are right, In my opinion it's only worth rooting your device if you plan to try a couple of custom ROM's. You seriously won't regret. HTC have a habit of leaving some of the older devices to "fall & die" without providing updates. Through the hard work and determination of some of these guys on here, You will not only have your handset kept alive but also at the same level as some as HTC's flagship devices.
As for recommendation on ROM

It's out. Check your evo 3d gsm threads. Don't do official upgrade unless you want an un downgradeable hboot.
If you want s off in the future, be sure to do it on GB now, not ICS.

If you do the OTA you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK OR S OFF as of now, no HTC dev unlock even. NEW hboot, no way to flash recovery, more problems if you want s off
I'd s off your phone then you go update the new ICS firmware zip, not the OTA then choose the roms in the 3d gsm section android development.

Desire S upgrade ICS Step by Step

Hi all,
Simply , what shall u do to upgrade Desire S to ICS if you are the following... just guide me please
- Normal use
- Phone not rooted
- Region Arabic
- don't know the differences between RUU, ROM, Kernel
- Saw that there was something released on HTCDev but noticed region is CHS...don't know what is that, is that the final stage?
What shall I do, since its the first time for the update not to be OTA.
I have small idea, need guidance & links.
Thanks a million in advance

Sywepd form my DsereiS
Htcdev has just released the kernel source, it is not meant to be flashed on a device but compiled on a PC and then installed along an ICS ROM but it certainly won't work out of the box.
If this doesn't make any sense to you, you'll have to wait.

i mean if you want to flash an ICS 4.0.3 rom or ics firmware you have to be rooted first
and surely S-OFF for the ics firmware
Rooted is basically unlocking your phone and bypassing HTC security so that you can flash unofficial firmware and ROMs
Check in the Android Developing area for ROMs... IMO The 4.2 roms aren't running great as of yet...Still new technology for this phone...Give them some time. There is a great ROM I just came across today and tried that is OpenSensation - the latest 2.27.13 build. It looks just like the 4.2 roms (I've already flashed most of them) but it runs amazing on this phone. Its a 4.0.4 build and its simply fantastic. I would give it a try if I was you. Mind you, you will need to root your phone if you already haven't as well as get a recovery such as CWM (clock work manager).
