wireless drive as a storage solution - Nexus 4 Accessories

I haven't seen much here about using wireless (wifi) drives as a solution to the lack of expandable storage on the N4 and other devices.
There are a number of models available ranging from hard drive enclosures to built-in flash memory or removable SD card units.
i just bought one of the latter, a PQI Air Drive and it's working well for me on my N4 and Blackberry Playbook.

the PQI takes SD cards up to 64GB and operates in 2 modes: 1/ as a normal usb 2.0 card reader/ writer when plugged in to pc via its retractable usb cable; or 2/ as a wifi (b/g/n) access point giving wireless access to its SD card from (up to 5 simultaneousl) wifi-enabled devices.
On the phone end, you can either access the PQI using a free app available from the playstore, or via any browser or file manager that allows the IP of the PQI to be entered as a path.
Physically the PQI is tiny, about the dimensions of a credit card, 7mm thick and weighing less than 2oz. it contains a LiPoly rechargeable battery good for 5.5 hours use which can be recharged on the go by plugging in the usb cable in either mode.
transfer speeds are good. using my playbook i transferred across a film at approximately 1.5MB/s, and the device has had no problems streaming any media i've tried so far.
another use for the PQI for photographers whose cameras use SD cards is to transfer the card to the PQI to view their images on a larger screen than the camera's.
Only downside with the PQI is that when connected, as is normal with wifi, the N4 shuts down its phone data connection, so that you have no way of accessing the internet while using it. there might be a way of overriding this behaviour but i don't know what that would be. it's not a big problem for my purposes anyway.
i paid £48 shipped for my PQI (without an SD card) from UK eBay; definitely worth it for me. Other wireless drives I've seen were nearer the £100 mark.

nobody else using wireless drives?

I just use my old Android phone (with a 32gb sd card in it) and the Fast File Transfer app. Check it out on the Play store - there's a thread on it on xda. Essentially I've ended up with a free wifi drive

great idea. i like the way you think.

Question: Have you found a way so that the WiFi Drive doesn't prevent you from connecting to another Access Points (ie: your home network)?
I tried the WiFi Drive before, was unable to connect to any other AP, which caused me to access data via my mobile service. Also, when I tried to open Play Store, and a few other apps, It would not connect. I think those apps were trying to access the internet via the WiFi Drive connection.
I have a Home Server, set up with Samba Shares, been looking for a way to sufficient access (or even mount) them from Android.
(Note: I'm not rooted, so reason why I'm finding it difficult to mount the Samaba Shares as accessible drives/memory in android)

i don't see how you would get 2 wireless networks running simultaneously. what's more annoying, as i mentioned in the OP, is that because the phone thinks it's connected to a wifi network it disconnects phone data services! there is probably a way of turning these back on -- but i don't know it.
in practice, this isn't too big a deal to me as i don't generally want the internet when i'm streaming media from the wireless drive.

Just looked that thing up, holy crap it's expensive!!! $180 is 2/3 the price of a new Nexus!!!

Can you play media such as a DivX movie or music from the drive without transferring the files to the phone first?

An alternative.

Presumably all these devices work by tethering one device to the other. That has the impact of shutting down other wireless services until you untether /close the connection.
Cubeology is really asking about streaming data from one device to the other. You can do this if you set one device up as a Upnp server (apps abound for this), which obviously works if you use the approach I do (with an old phone acting as the server). I would have thought these wifi servers offer something similar (i assume they're just a basic Android box with wifi, battery & storage so should be capable) but i've never played with one. Suggest you have a look at the descriptions of the terminal apps in the Play store
Edit - thought that Ravpower do-dad seems a good idea, combining power and data storage in one box! Anyone used one?
From the description on amazon it uses a app called MobileFun which transfers files and seems to stream photos and music but not sure about video or other data

yes. your phone sees the wireless drive as a network share. you get a list of files in your browser/ file manager. click on a file (eg. a video) and it opens the associated app to play it.

woah! you are massively overcomplicating it.
what happens is that the drive acts as a wireless access point to which your phone connects and then sees the drive contents as a network share. you don't need any apps. as far as your N4 is concerned, your drive is connected storage like a built-in sd card.
that ravpower does look very good. goes beyond what my pqi air drive can do as it has full usb host mode and can connect to an existing wifi network to enable simultaneous internet. i can't see any suppliers in the UK however and it isn't on ebay.

Samba Server/ Drive Mapping

I've searched for this for 2 hours so, trigger-happy users, don't flame me.
I was looking for a samba server style app that would make the Hd2 appear as a drive on the computer.
I presume these type of network transfers would be faster than a standard ftp or usb (it
If you need further clarification then have a look at this app I was using on my old N95 called SymNAS:
http://symnas.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx
Basically it will turn the phone into a NAS drive (Network Attached Storage)
If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.
I seriously doubt it would faster than usb ...
Unless you have a 400MB wireless network ...
but regardless of speed I have looked for this as well, there are apps that let you transfer files to the phone over wifi but have not seen one that lets it act as a network drive ... yet ....
The HTC network plugin lets you map a drive on your phone though ....
So would you recommend:
a. remove micro sd and use an adapter
b. use usb cable and choose mass storage drive
are they both the same thing?
Are there any other methods of high speed file transfer that i am unaware of ?

NOTE: My wife was out of town with the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 at the time of this video, but I can confirm they work perfectly. As mentioned in the video, I did have to use the tablet version with my devices. At least on the LG Optimus G Pro it seemed to crash.
Gather you devices together. Your iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, iPad, etc. It’s time they had access to a full size SDCard, USB thumb drive, or portable hard drive. At first I thought this was simply another portable USB charger. That is just the start of it. In particular I liked the pass through Internet feature.
The video below shows you just a little of what it can do. There are applications available for Android devices, iOS, and your desktop computer.
Available on Amazon for $49.99 with free shipping… It’s a good buy for a variety of people.

Thanks for posting this. Don't exactly need this right at the moment but going to buy one anyways. Will be pretty cool to place with. I have 2 android phones, 2 laptops, a desktop and 2 android tablets. Will be a great way to share thing between all the devices. I'm currently using a app called airdroid to share things between all my devices and this will simplify everything. Wonder how well it would work leaving it plugged in all the time to power and letting all my devices connect to this instead of my normal network. I'm sure the battery won't last long being plugged in 24/7.

I guess we would hope that the device would just draw from the wall adapter as long as it was supplying over the amount required to operate the WiFi. Then the battery wouldn't be constantly drained / recharged.
Many thanks for the review
Two questions:
1. Can the device and its connected storage be accessed via my own wifi network and be accessibble as a standard network attached storage in Windows 7 without any software/ftp solution?
2. I have seen this in 2 reviews but I want to be 100% certain: I can access the SD cards/Flash drive attached to the device on my PC via USB connection to the outlet which also provides power to the device. I need to know this because I can then hook the device to my Samsung TV and access the content.

1. It is supposed to be accessible this way. At the moment I can't get it to configure. You can modify the settings from your PC by accessing the device's IP from a web browser.
2. Yes... Just verified. Appears as a Generic USB Hub and the SDCard appears as a normal drive.
Wooh, looks like im buying one of these!
Can you access the files from a phone tethering the net? just curious as i would like to connect this to my phone on the go but still have internet. Either way I just ordered mine, very excited to try it out. Also thanks for the review it really helped me make a decision on this.
Isn't it too big to carry around.. May be something smaller would be nice like this one?

Welcome and yes, you can connect to the device to a hotspot and it passes the Internet through to any device attached to it.

It allows you to even connect small USB hard drives to it since it has a battery. Can also charge your device.

[Q] App/Function for instant transfer of photos from Phone to PC via BT

I've been searching for a couple of days now, and I cannot find anything useful. I am working in a corporate environment. I have a PC with a direct Ethernet line to the internet and internal networks. I do not have wifi available, but I do have a BT adapter of my own installed on the PC which works.
I take a lot of pictures for visual aids and work instructions here, which I use my LG G2 for exclusively. I cannot stay tethered to the PC via USB all the time, so Bluetooth is my only real feasible option for wireless transfer. What I would like is to have the photos I take transfer immediately to the host PC without having to initiate it. Bluetooth takes quite a while to transfer large files, but there should be enough time between taking each picture to allow the transfers to complete. I cannot afford the bandwidth on my carrier to upload through the internet either. Does such an app or mod exist to achieve this functionality?
Thanks!
Michael

Thank you and I appreciate the effort, but as I stated above I do not have wifi available on my work PC. Also, this app does not immediately transfer to the PC, which is the functionality I really need. I'm guessing from the lack of responses, such a thing does not exist yet. :-\

I think Bluesharing for Bluetooth may do what you're looking for. This is a paying app though. I've not tried it myself, so try at your own risk.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.my.blueshare
One personal note on this: this type of app is bound to drain your battery within minutes. I would personally go for a solution to manually sync once or twice per day using the USB connection, using a bat file or similar to automate some of the transfer. Just my personal opinion.

[Q] Is there a way to transfer files faster?

Hey there,
When using MTP to transfer files it takes forever!!!
Using adb push/pull it takes a bit less than forever (It takes quite a while)
Is there any way to transfer files between the PC and the Android device faster (since it doesnt support sdcard)?
Im trying to transfer a 13gb Folder from my OPO to the PC and it just wont end transfering.
Thanks for the attention
Can you elaborate on what you would consider forever? My PC only has USB 2.0 and it still transfers stuff to the phone at around 20MB/sec. 11 minutes for 13GB is not bad.

Nah, I think that there is something up that's out of the ordinary. Back when I had my 16GB Galaxy S3 and USB 2.0, it still didn't take long to fill that. I even had 64GB sandisk extreme sdxc card with it and that thing was very fast on USB 2.0, and I'm spoiled now that I've used USB 3.0 for so long.
Anyway, it may just be the drivers he used... I can't think of anything else...

Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer
And then on your computer use a FTP Client and connect to your phone (connected to WiFi of course) and then try transferring the files from there.
The fastest way truthfully is having a WiFi AC card in your laptop, an AC router and ten running airdroid. That way transferring files will transfer at much faster speeds than USB but again, you'll at least need an AC enabled router

IME the fastest file xfer is via adb push/pull, second is ftp using ES File Explorer's ftp server. MTP sucks balls, doesn't even work properly on Windows.

MTP works perfectly fine on Windows for me.

The USB / MTP method takes for ever or fails out-right.
I've switched over to FTP via ES filemanager -> Remote Manager and it's transfering alot quicker / not failing after hanging for a few minutes.

Using NTFS drives with Note 10 (Exynos)

Recently, I've been forced to start using my Note 10 (Exynos) as a replacement for a PC (long story).
I bought a 3-rd party DeX adapter, and in general it works great. It works nicely with an external 1080p display, and even with my wireless Microsoft keyboard+mouse combo (with a dongle). Not all apps work well in desktop mode/full screen, but overall it's good enough.
The only thing I can't figure out is how to use NTFS formatted USB drives (external HDDs and SSDs, and disk-on-keys) with the phone.
Whenever such a drive is connected to the DeX adapter I get a notification "Issue with ... USB drive". In Settings -> Storage -> Advanced the drive is shown, but with message "The data on this ... USB drive is corrupt". In both cases the phone suggests to format the connected drive.
I also tried with 2 different OTG adapters (including the original one from the box), and got exactly same results, so it doesn't seem related to the adapters.
Also, the same drives work fine with my Sony Android TV, so the issue does not seem to be with the drives.
I found quite a few mentions on the internet that Samsung and Microsoft have some kind of agreement and the default file explorer is supposed to work with NTFS devices. This actually makes sense, since new Samsung phones have built-in integration with Your Phone and OneDrive from Microsoft. However, this doesn't seem to be the case.
I found the "exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon Software" app in the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro) which kind-of works in tandem with Total Commander or X-plore File Manager, but has a terrible rating in the store and I also found it doesn't work with all my external drives. So I'm a bit hesitant to pay the 10-15 bucks for something that doesn't provide me with a full solution.
Does anyone have good experience with using a Samsung phone (preferably a Note) with external NTFS drives?
Any advice (except reformatting all my external drives) is appreciated.
Galaxy Note 10 (SM-N970F).
Android 11 + One UI 3.1.
