Hello XDA members,
I bought an HTC desire S a few weeks ago. Phone works flawlessly but takes ages to charge. Phone doesnt heat up, shows proper information while charging (AC on wall charger and USB on computer) but charging is very slow. On wall charger, battery takes 5-6 hours to charge from 25-30% to 90-100%. I have tried different USB cables, batteries, chargers and even tried 3 different ROMs with different KERNEL and calibrated the battery. Once charged, battery lasts as it should. I don't think this can be caused by bad USB port because data transfer rate is normal. I tried charging after turning off the device and the charging rate was fairly quicker. So i tried flashing custom roms but that didn't solved the problem.
Any ideas what else i should do are much appreciated..
is it a new phone? mine charges like yours but the battery is almost 2 years old.

I only can say: Same thing here. Haven't really looked into this after flashing Flinny's 10.1 ROM, but with the stock HTC ROM I had the same issue. What I could see was, that the phone charged really fast up to about 80% and then the charging-progress slowed down to a crawl.

yes. its a new phone. i had doubts that the battery maybe the culprit and tried an original battery out of a friends phone and then bought an new oem battery but that didnt solve the problem. The phone is charging (AC charger) at the moment. 43% to 56% in almost 1 hour.

Flashed the patched (custom, stable) kernel. Battery life has somewhat improved but charging is still awful sluggish.

Maybe it is hardware related
IDK
But as said in the kernel thread if you do not need additional features you better bet on the Stock kernel for Sense 3.6 / MIUI or B2B for Sense 4. This should give you best possible operation and is my personal choice as well

I'm currently running Sean's latest leak/update and have noticed significant battery drain despite being plugged into the charger. I never really paid enough attention while on gb roms, so I'm not sure if this is an ics thing or not. My buddy at work has had similar issues and is completely bone stock, so I'm thinking it's just a skyrocket issue.
Anybody else notice this? It happens no matter what I'm doing on the phone and is obviously more noticeable when playing games. It seems to me that the charger should at least compensate for the usage!
It had me so baffled, I've re-flashed multiple times now with the same results.

Yeah... it's 5v/1a. Same with my buddy. I thought that might be the problem, and I had switched it with an old one, but don't think so. I've used the powerskin in the past, and it's also 5v/1a... still drains with it.
I'm totally puzzled! I've changed chargers, gone with/without the powerskin, re-flashed roms, calibrated the battery and who knows what else. Only thing I hadn't done was replace the battery, but now that my buddy is having issues on stock, I don't know if that's the problem or not....

Its probably the battery while charging check if in about phone it says its conncted to ac.
Also are you rooted?
Could also be the cable. I have had the exact issue, replaced the cable and now its fine. Its funny cause the galaxy s2 is far more picky when it comes to chargers/cables. For instance. I can plug it in and the phone won't do a think, yet when I plug it in the skyrocket it will accept the connection.

I've tried diff cable/charger combos... no luck. I had cable issues with my epic (sprint) and knew Samsung had issues with them in the past, so that was one of the first things that came to mind... no dice though!

Test your receptacle with a digital multi meter . The stock charger works great. Enough so
That i spliced 3 high quality usb cable and have over a ten foot cable which charges just fine.
So its possible. U have a bad charger. Crap cables. Or overdrawn circuit whith your receptacles. No enough to trip but enough your charger cant pull 1 amp

I did a 1.5 hour Skype video while on charge and my battery never charged it held at the same percentage. Anything else I do charging outweighs my use. Gotta be the charger or the phone itself. Even if you have no battery in it should still boot off the charger and run correct?

Use any type of root explorer, while charging got to sys/class/power supply/battery
and open batt_current_xxx or something like this, I'll check it later if you get into troubles, breaking my head now with tasker at the moment. It should show a value around 8500, at least that's what it shows for me.
I'm having the same issue on Sean's latest update, my battery current adc file says 2934... I posted this in the sky ics thread
"I've been having some battery issues since coming to this ROM on update six. I'm on nine now and all is well, battery life included once I get it charged up. I'm using OEM Samsung everything, charging block, two different cables, my original battery and a 2100Mah extended for the Gnex. All Samsung, no change between them. This thing just REFUSES to charge if I'm using it while plugged in, and if I leave it alone and let it charge, it takes absolutely forever to charge either battery. The skyrocket battery won't gain one percent charge if I'm using it while plugged in, and the Gnex battery actually discharges slowly! Any ideas? I bought this phone from a member on here and it came with superlite 5 and I don't recall it having this problem."
If the file reading is that low there must be an issue with the amp, if you tried a different charger and cables and it happened since changing roms I'd say its a pure software issue. Maybe you should try flashing a different kernel before trying to change your rom, the problem may be laying there.
I had the same issue but mine was related to the usb cable. With a new micro usb cable my phone charges without issue.

Hello guys I'm I little worried. Here's the thing, I tried for some days figuring out how to root, unlock bootloader, super CID, etc.. it was with good battery life, but after I did all that, I installed the viperxl (i used it with my older HOXL) and everything ran good. What I have noticed is that my battery drain is so, I mean soooo bad..!
I tried a full wipe but I think it's still the same. My phone its brand new so there is no problem with older owners. I haven't changed the radio (maybe could be that?) I have lost more battery on standby than when using the phone and that didn't happened with my older HOXL
So could be that I messed my battery when I charged the phone with the nexus 7 charger??
Or what could be the problem?? Any suggestions will be good, thanks....

Is the N7 charger more amps than the One X charger? Some folks on here have said that the device will only pull the amps it needs, others have contradicted this. I don't know enough about the topic to comment either way. I use a Motorola charger on my One X every day, since it has a longer cord than the HTC charger and it happens to work better where I have it located on my desk.
I can honestly say I've used my nexus 7 charger a few times with no problems

Its a mental thing. I use my nexus 7 charger at home and my htc one at work and a high output Motorola in the car. My battery life has always been superb. Running latest viper with beastmode evita...
From what I know about charger outputs, it doesnt matter, it depends on the device. It can only pull in its max regardless of the charger. Higher the output in a charger should be better so your phone can pull in its max
There's also other factor that contributes to horrible battery life. Rogue apps, horrible networks that switches back and forth between lte and hspa+ and so on...
The last thing could just be a bad battery. Not common but I'm pretty sure it happens

yep the specifications of amps is the current that the charger can handle, as long as the charger of the n7 can handle the same or more current than the one xl charger it should be ok, many chargers are 1A.
For the OP , i think you should definitively try with another rom, maybe stock to make sure that the problem is not your battery?

Your device isn't going to take in 2A. It's only going to take in what it can. I'm not saying that by using a different charger is not going to harm your device, it's just highly unlikely it will. They only way is to flash back to stock and see if that makes a different.
Also, you mention you had another 1x, is your current one a refurb or replacement? That may have something to do with it as well
The Rom is awesome but there are times when it doesn't work for very small numbers of devices...you're just prob unlucky.

It might be your radio switching back and forth that's draining your battery.
I have 2 jobs, my first one has lte coverage but not so great in the building so it's always switching from LTE to 4g which I notice drains my battery. My 2nd job at night has great coverage in and out the warehouse. I get full bars of LTE there and my battery would drain very slowly.
In the beginning, I was worried as well because my battery drain seem like a lot so I thought something was wrong but then I checked the battery at my second job and it was great so I figured it was just the network and location.
Overall, especially compared to all the androids I ever used, the one x battery is pretty damn impressive especially for an LTE device.
I came from Verizon using the droid razr and galaxy nexus which couldn't make it past 4 hours on lte with light usage

I've experienced crapp battery life after using my HP Touchpad charger.
Also, my 2nd HOX had horrible battery life out of the box. After fully draining > charging twice my screen on time went from 2.5 hours to 4+ hours with the exact same settings and usage.
Edit: while we're talking batteries... I heard a tech from.the ATT Device Service Center tell two people not to charge their phones overnight because leaving it on the charger when it's full is bad for the battery. Those guys are so smart! They must get their info from Yahoo Answers.

The battery meter calibration gets wiped whenever you flash a custom ROM. You should do at least 2-3 power cycles before making any judgements on battery. Charge to full, but only drain to 10-20%. Draining to shutoff doesn't make it any more accurate, but has the added risk that once in a while the safety circuit will not engage properly, and you will be stuck with a battery that will not accept a charge.
Also, on any ROM but stock AT&T, you can toggle LTE off. Since you don't have LTE in your area, toggle it off (if you haven't already) in Settings>Mobile network settings>network mode.

That's the explanation I've read previously.
But if so, why did HTC used a different charger plug for the HTC Flyer tablet than all their phones? The charge port is an interesting one, in that its bigger than a MicroUSB port, but will still accept a MicroUSB charge or sync cable (the plug only takes up the bottom "half" of the port when plugged in). The pins needed for data sync are the same, and in fact you can actually plug any MicroUSB sync cable or charger into the Flyer. But you can't plug the Flyer's charger (1.62 Amp) to any HTC phone, only the Flyer (and I assume the Jetstream tablet).
Many have said that this is so people would not plug the Flyer charger to a phone, and damage the phone from the higher amps.
Seems like the difference in amps is the only reason HTC used a different charge port for the Flyer.

In my experience, an uncalibrated battery can go from 8% battery to 0% in a matter of minutes. The only way that I've corrected this is with a full discharge.

You're just calibrating the meter, not the battery. The notion of calibrating the battery is left over from 80s technology NiCad batteries.
Under the best of circumstances, the battery meter is nowhere near accurate enough to expect readings less than 8% to be accurate. If you've experienced some more "accurate" reading at this granularity, it may just be placebo or pure chance. Even if true, I'd rather have a bit of inaccuracy in the low end, rather than play with the probability of a battery that won't take a charge.
In any case, you shouldn't be running your battery down that low. We all do it once in a while, but it shouldn't be habit.

The battery usage data is wiped with each boot or charge (same as wiping battery stats). But I don't think that is the same as the calibration data.

Hey all,
recently I have encountered a rather big and annoying problem on my phone. It has to do with my battery. I've looked it up on xda, but nothing was really exactly like my problem.
The problem is that my battery level has gone absolutely crazy.
First, charging my phone takes many many hours. After around 5 hours it still wasn't fully charged.
Then when rebooting the phone, it magically said 100%. However, after this the phone drained extremely fast. Think around 20 percent per hour, while using it normally!
Secondly, around 40 percent the phone automatically turned off, without the usual HTC logo. When I turn it on again the battery level is suddenly 2 %. After a few times turning off and on the battery level goes up to 30 percent. This can be seen very well on the pictures.
The phone is 1,5 years old and I haven't installed a custom ROM.
Am I dealing with a broken battery or is the problem in the software?
Hi,
I'm not an expert, but I think your battery is exhausted.
But before you run buying another battery...
What charger are you using? Stock HTC or custom? If custom, what are the Voltage/Current output values?
probably your battery is dying as the above user said
or the battery it doesn't connect properly

every time i plug my charger into my phone, it says "battery have low temperature, discharge for battery health" or something like that.
but it still recharges when the phone is shut down.

Which rom are you on ?
No replies because the error you're having is quite rare , in fact it may be the first i've seen in the forum.
I don't know what causes it , if it charges with device shut down then it's probably software related.
Flash a different ROM then see if it is fixed.
If it's not then it's probably a hardware related issue.

It's probably the adapter because kernel doesn't accept charge for some reason , that's why it charges with the phone off.
Check your adapter ratings , In the original it's rated 4.8 Volts with 1 Amp but anything around 4.5-5 volts and 1 Ampere or below should work but i've had problems with stock roms not charging with an adapter they don't recognize so try it out with original if it's not.
Also , try using the blue kernel from ibluemind , and enable the force ac charge with a file manager , the guide is in the thread.
I don't know if it disables protections in the kernel level , but if it does it might work for you.
Well, half of the phones out there have programmable battery charger chip (AKA Intelligent Li-ion battery charger), and if the BIOS (bootloader) is corrupted or if flashed wrongly, it simply refuse to charge or do so half-way. And as far as charger is concerned, 4.4 Volts minimum is recommended in most case (due to diode voltage drop in the bypass FETs in the charger chip). 5.2 Volts is the maximum as well. Ampere doesn't matter as Li-ion battery is pretty efficient as far as charge absorption is concerned - it generates almost no heat when charging compared to Nickel-Cadmium battery. Of course, go with beefy charger (2 A, 5 V) as the CPU and LCD eats lot more power than what is able to be put into the battery.

Of course, go with beefy charger (2 A, 5 V) as the CPU and LCD eats lot more power than what is able to be put into the battery.

Is there a way to repare a corrupt BIOS and get the charging to work again?

There are unlocked ones floating around in this forum - try OS_Hacking's tool - it contain P920 and SU760 versions - be sure to pop in Gingerbread bootloader after flashing P920 BIOS so you can boot up gingerbread ROM or even CyanogenMod ROM.

I don't know if it disables protections in the kernel level , but if it does it might work for you.

i found the thread, but i can't find how to enable force ac charge.
can you help me?
Hello,
is this serious? Can you guys make a screenshot of your result of the app "ampere"? Is 500ma good? The 1+1 should load afaik with 2100ma, or? I am confused
I get full 1800-1900mAh on OEM and other 2amp chargers. Change the cable that's mostly the culprit, or maybe change position so there's less stress

Here is mine with ****ty cable ..
And here with stock cable. You can see the difference. Keep in mind my phone was at 66% charge already and phone charges fast when battery is much low.

Use stock cable and stock charger, If you don't have stock cable then get a good quality cable may be from Anker and don't buy 6 feet or 2 meter cable. Buy 1 meter cable.

My phone was plugged in over night, it had 10 hours for charging, it only charged 10%
Which ROM/Kernel do you use. I had a problem on my brother's OPO with jgcaap rom and boeffla kernel, but with the kernel that comes with the rom there is no problem, charging at full speed.
